Chapter 690: S.A.D

@The:
This is a prime example of why I detest Law so much. Just when we're finally getting some emotional connection to the straw hats doings in this arc, Law comes back to yank the camera onto himself with the "Me me me! Focus on the handsome badass over here with the complicated plans and the smirks and the everyone is in the PALM OF MY HAAAAAND"
This chapter featured the very first instance of Doflamingo losing his carefree attitude (after 450 chapters!), and a two-page statement of "You watch out! I'm going to mess up this era!"
And the man responsible is not Luffy.
This had more fanfare than Luffy telling off Big Mam for petes sake.
But thats the thing. Luffy IS not that kind of guy, he just doesn't care about ending and beginning eras but Law does and its actually a pretty big deal in the story and plus its great seeing that there are other characters out there who care about other things than just finding One piece. Law's goal of completely or at least starting of removing the old could also come from some shit that happened during his tenure in Doflamingo's crew.

There was another time when we saw Dofla don't smiling?
When Oars Jr. announced he was going to attack at least one Warlord during the War:

I kinda disliked how we don't see how kinemon found out about Momonosuke being a dragon. I mean…was it Caesar's henchmen? Was it the little girl?
Speaking of latter, where are the newer buch of kids btw? It didn't seem like they were chasing after the candy, so where exactly should they be?Overall a good chapter probably, but something felt weird to me this time around. As if Oda is in a rush.

the funny thing is, the only thing makes Law strong is his DF. There hasn't been a single time Law has physically attacked someone, just with his fruit. Even counter shock seems to be his fruit's doing.

@The:
Just because other people are involved doesn't mean that its not Law pulling the strings, that its not Laws master Plan that is messing up Doflamingo. My issue is not that Law talks politics and not Luffy, its that the scene exists in the first place. Because I hate, HATE the thought of people playing puppeteer with Luffy.
You misunderstood that scene entirely. It's not about Law giving Doflamingo the middle finger and how everything is in the palm of his hand (at least not just). It's about Law stating the facts, the time of the old is over. It's an inevitable truth. Big panels showing everyone involved in the turmoil. Law is only a part of that. It's something that needed to be said and Law was the best character to say it. It would never have worked with Luffy
@The:
10 Chapters ago, Luffy encountered and punched Caesar. Last week it happened again, only it was 1000x more awesome. Why was that?
Second time Luffy punched Caesar because he really wanted to.
First time Luffy did it because shrug Law asked me to.And? That was kinda what Oda was going for.
@The:
And call me old fashioned, but when villains have set up giant schemes, I kind of like the main protagonist to be the one to pick them apart.
Imagine if all of Alabasta was just Luffy taking down Crocodile because it fitted in someone ELSES designs, someone who had way more beef with Croc, someone who had just kinda strung Luffy along the entire arc. That would be immensely shitty.Luffy's not being manipulated. Law disclosed his plan to him albeit not in detail but Luffy knows what he's in for and how much they're going to wreck shit up. He's not a puppet, he's an ally. It's not like Luffy's being tricked into fighting Caeser to suit Law's purposes. He owed Law a favor and decided to help him out. And now he personally wants to do it too.
@The:
Law is uninspired, bland, boring, quirkless, mirthless, run of the mill, the kind of character a mangaka can create drunk, blindfolded and in two seconds. Lacking in personality, design, well defined powers and emotional connectivety, he is as far from what endears OP characters to me as can be.
Wrong. No really, just straight up wrong. Don't know what else to say other than I severely disagree.
Really, I think Bleach has given you a severe complex about bishie characters. I can relate. I'm the first to jump on pretentious characters and stories (See Prometheus, Dark Knight Rises, Final Fantasy 8). But I truly find Law interesting. Not every character has to be a goofy exaggeration with overtly silly quirks and over-the-top facial expressions.
Forgive Oda for trying to experiment a little and try new things. He didn't make Law's character like this because it's an easy way to draw in fans (because like he even needs to). He did it because he wanted to have this wild card character who you're always second guessing about. At least that's what I believe. But come on, give Oda some credit.
@The:
At least Aizen was entertaining in his over the top impossibleness.
Aizen is so badly written, it's funny. Law isn't (badly written that is)
@The:
His "substance" is that we don't know his substance.
The characterization of Law is subtle but it amounts to more than just "I'm so cool, yeah baby". There IS more to him than meets the eye. From the first time we were introduced to him, we're stricken by how different he looks and is from conventional OP characters, we're told about how he's this ruthless pirate that has done unspeakable things. But then he does totally unexpected things like having Polar Bears in his crew, randomly saving a slave and letting him join his crew, saves Luffy's life at great risk to his own life. What he does is always off the wall be it not charging straight into the New World and going out of his way to become a Shickibukai. Then we learn he has a dark history with Doflamingo (which probably sucked for him) and that he wants to stir the New World into chaos. It's not that we don't know his substance. It's that we've gotten hints of something deeper, gleams of it but we haven't seen the whole thing but it is there.
Plus he is legitimately cool. And not just because he's so composed but the shit he does is pretty insane and crazy.
@The:
How did he switch chains without anyone noticing.
Who cares? Are you really nitpicking on this? Him getting captured wasn't even part of the plan. I'm talking about his plan as a whole. Which is capture Caeser, take a hold of SAD, use it for his own purposes and piss off Doflamingo and the other big fishes while he's at it.
@The:
How did he expect to remain undercover when he took out CCs men on the way to the Straw Hats mountain hideout.
They caught him leaving so he silenced them. Their pieces are probably ash by now.
@The:
If he really did have a way to instantly get his heart back,
Where was this stated?
@The:
why not just destroy the SAD, grab Caesar and leave.
Because he couldn't do it on his own or if he did, he didn't think he had a good chance of success. Which is why he went to Luffy for help. And where was it stated he wants to destroy the SAD? He just said he didn't want Doflamingo to have it anymore. Maybe he wants to use it for himself?
But really, these are all nitpicks. His overall plan makes sense. It has a defined ending and ways planned out to accomplish his plan. It's much, much better than Aizen whose plan was I think to invade the Soul Palace or something and then wastes time chasing Ichigo's friends.
@The:
Ridiculously overpowered, grab-bag power
His power is awesome, man. It''s not even about grabbing stuff. It's been used in clever and creative ways. I still don't know how Counter Shock works but looking forward to finding out. And it's ridiculously overpowered to what is fitting for a Shickibukai. You know, the same guys that can cut fucking mountains in half and nuke islands. These are the sort of things that should be expected from now on. Even Luffy is now capable of destroying an ISLAND SIZED boat.
@The:
Bepo being awesome means Bepo is awesome, not Law. Otherwise, you're saying Satori makes Enel suck.
I'm saying the fact that he takes people like that into his crew instead of a more traditional pirate crew is something different from expected.
@The:
And Vergos shining moment of Law beatdown seems immaterial when Law finishes off the guy, in Max Serious 100% armor mode with one blow.
Vergo lost to him because he underestimated him severely thinking he was still dealing with the same snot nosed brat who probably pissed his pants in front of him. had he fought smartly, he would have probably won (and again, Oda did it this way for a reason not just because LAW IS SO COOL <3). The point is however he's not untouchable. We've seen him in moments of weakness. He's not a God. He almost lost to Smoker apart from the whoopings Vergo gave him.
@The:
Maybe I don't like the excessive character focus because I feel his character and what he stands for is awful?
That's your prerogative to not like him (personally I think your reasoning for not liking him is shallow because he's NOT WACKY ENOUGH but whatever. And really, "what he stands for?" I don't think Oda made him to be the poster boy for bishie bait). But there is a reason why he's been getting all this screen-time which is intricately tied to the story.
@The:
Also, all the Law-focus and post-arc buildup distracts from the drama of the current arc.
Brownbeard, Kinemon/Momonosuke, Drugged Kids >>>>>>>>>>>> Law, setup, Law, setup. Again, 11/36 chapters have LAW!!!! Cliffhangers.Again, your prerogative. I personally like Law and I'm interested in his plans and what his role in the story is as much as the emotional drama of the arc. But it's all there for a reason. Because Law is an important character for the future of the series, from the beginning, he was hyped up as being one of the more important SN. So of course Oda is going to build up his character. Luffy needs allies/rivals for the New World and some of them like Law or Hawkins or Kid need to be taken especially seriously. We'll have arcs dedicated to Drake and Kid, don't worry, they'll have their turn.
@The:
Shirahoshi was at least integral to the drama of fishman island itself.
While Law is integral to the story and the whole "We are the new generation who will replace the old" theme going on.

I don't know anything about X Drake and I love him for aesthetic reasons such as above.
I do hope Drake gets a big role, because he's easily my favourite Supernova. Even the little we know about him - that he used to be a Marine - makes him a fascinating character. His cool design and ability is just a bonus!

I really enjoyed this chapter, but I just couldn't comment on it after the confusing translations from Manga Reader. The pacing was brilliant and ofcourse the developments. CC vs Luffy round 2 is very amusing, but I'd really like to see how Luffy expects to counter CC's ability to remove the oxygen from the air around Luffy, especially in a fight that isn't over quickly. I didn't like that how Kinemon discovered Momonosuke is now a dragon was just left out. While it's certainly likely that he found out through word of mouth, I needed to see that conversation.
Now onto the main course. Law + Smoker versus Vergo. I'm just going to let Smoker's decision to take an ass kicking just to distract Vergo from his real intentions - stealing Law's heart and returning it to him, thereby repaying his 'debt' - go because some characters just take Honour too seriously. Anyway, Vergo was hyped up to be some kind of near-unstoppable tank, but was then dispatched in AMAZING fashion by Law using his DF ability and quite possibly Haki in tangency. Oh and the rest of the MOTHERFINGISLANDWASCUTINHALFALONGWITHVERGO. Damn, he's come a long way from his small room 2 years ago that had me thinking any random yet skilled sniper will take his head off.
Law's progression however does present the question of the Haki levels necessary to meet one's DF proficiency. I've always liked to think that Logia users are simply the most vulnerable to Haki, regardless of their proficiency (so long as the Haki user isn't a complete retard), and can be countered through intelligent use of CoA. While Paramecia and Zoan's are affected notably less, to the point where a skilled enough Paramecia DF user, such as Law, can overcome a proficient CoA/Haki user such as Vergo if his/her DF skill is adequate. I believe Zoan's are even far less effected by Haki than Paramecia as their abilities simply change their physical attributes/appearance to that of an animal.
The verbal exchange between Law and Doflamingo was intriguing, I'd like to think he was talking about himself, Luffy, and any other alliances he's made as the 'Big Fish' with Kid, Hawkins, Big Mom, Apoo and CC as the gears Doflamingo has concocted. I think this just because of where the gear was placed, although it's not actually touching Hawkins and Kid. They may be with Law. But I'm eager to find out :D

I think people underestimated Law \ super novas comes from the fact that we saw them when they were weaker \ now getting started compare to other big boys .
Before Doflamingo became a warlord his bounty was 340,000,000 for Law it was 440,000,000 .
The super novas are no longer rookies there with the big boys now and people should expect all of them to be much stronger . -
Wow that was probably one of my favorite chapters ever. Watching Luffy kick the shit out of CC, watching Law and Smoker take on Vergo. So many great panels and that ending was amazing. I always find myself wondering just how people like Luffy and Law could compete with the greats like WB, Gol D, Garp, and Sengoku and it's so greatly to finally see someones power on display like that.
But Baby 5 and co are still on the way and 5 minutes till the gas. fuckin love Punk Hazard.
-
so something just bugging me here… Does Law call vergo DD's most valuable subordinate or his most powerful/ some verb that mixes both in? Cause there's a pretty big difference, and after reading "do you remember what he did to you" for 3 bubbles in a row on MP idk if their translation is iffy again.

How the hell is Doflamingo going to come back from this? He lost his right hand man, his top spy, and Caesar/SAD Production.

@Foxy:

His connections to a Yonkō who has an army of Zoan users, his own super-strong crew, and his hax DF powers.
-
I think you guys are seriously underestimating Law, his power only works as well as it does because he probably has expert knowledge of the human body and such things.
-
That was clearly one of his most powerful attacks and he's a supernova and a warlord…
I see nothing wrong with that display of power. -

I guess Baby 5 and Buffalo will indeed arrive when the action is over and the Straw Hats/Law/Smoker left the island. If not Doflamingo will loose 2 more members just like that. Now that Vergo is confirmed to be his strongest subordinate I really doubt they could put up a fight against any of the 3 "good guys".

I already brought that up in the spoilers thread, Gizmo shot it down saying their noses are too different.

Did Law just cut Vergo in half?

I'm also sure that Zoro and Sanji are stronger than Baby 5 and Buffalo.

So i guess i'll take a shot at it again. Though Vergo is DD's right hand man, is their any indication to his usefulness as a marine or his strength that makes him so? Cause if he was DD's strongest subordinate his arc won't be very long. If however he was simply his most "useful piece" it makes things a whole lot more interesting.
-

Not just the nose, the chin(s) as well. The old lady selling the unbrellas at teh lightening island looked like a hag, with this old lady looks like a mild mannered (looks don't mean she harmless, since Kalifa was beautiful but vicious) granny
-
I loved the chapter, but this whole thing with Luffy and Caesar is getting annoying. If all that is going to happen between them is Luffy curbstomping him then it needs to end next chapter. Next hit needs to end it. If Caesar is not going to even put up a fight then be done with him.

Well, Vergo surely isn't dead so I think that he'll continue to attack next chapter. As of his usefulness, he's basically the one that makes Punk Hazard possible, so even if he isn't the strongest he's pretty damn important. Also just because LAw cut him down since Vergo was underestimating him doesn't mean that fighting Doflamingo will be easy! I do agree though that if we see more higher ups within his crew it'll be alot more interesting.
-
Physically, Law was as strong and fast as Smoker, and he was almost as strong and fast as Vergo.
He wouldn't have come so far if he only relied on his DF power
Where was this seen? The fight with Smoker was extremely short and even that you could see that he can not do shit without his DF, heck Smoker just grabbed him at his neck and easily pushed him down while he always used his jute against Luffy. Law was being pushed back in the fight by Smoker´s fast usage of his DF and the only way Law won was by using his DF in a surprise attack, nothing suggests that he slightly has the same physical capabilities Smoker has, let alone almost the same as Vergo who has been presented as Terminator in this arc, i´m sorry but that´s just bullshit. Law´s fighting power is pretty much sink or swim. If his DF works on his opponent, then he has a clear advantage but if it does not work he is pretty much fucked.
Btw, did i just see a comparison between Wiper and Law? Law would piss himself in front of Wiper´s awesomeness
-
Nevertheless, it'd be easy to over-rely on the power, because it's so broken.
There is no such thing as a broken DF power. Also it should be realized that Smoker purposely placed himself at a disadvantage when fighting Vergo so he could move around to get Laws heart. Whether or not that means Smoker would have won the fight if he hadn't been fighting with that goal in mind is still up for discussion but I don't think we've seen his limit yet. Still he's clearly no match for Law but neither is Vergo.
-
As far as Law cutting Vergo, is it just me or is that blood coming from Vergo's wound or random debris? It would be rather confusing to me for Law's speech to Doffy about being overconfident to be reversed next chapter by Vergo being still in action. Law has no qualms about killing, has a personal reason to want to kill this sticky faced forgetful douchebag, and has already stated that is his goal. So I'm really hoping Vergo is dead or is going to die.
Mountain cutting? Freaking awesome testament to the new generations power and leads me to believe this era will surpass the Roger era in power.
Full body Haki armor is interesting and gives hope for a theory I had about a 4th gear vulcanised Luffy. ( Ultimate fangsam dream is a full body gear 3rd then vulcanised. Giant impossibly dense and powerful Luffy form to fight giants!)
-
I don't believe for a moment that Vergo is the strongest member of Dofla's crew.
-
Doflamingo was definitely thrown a curve ball…..his plans are failing.
But I dunno, he strikes me as the guy to have multiple aces up his sleeves. Who knows what other members he has?
They are strong, no doubt about that. I'm confident that Sanji's and Zoro's real opponents will be a bit below Vergo, but powerful enough for them to "grow". Especially the Okama seems like the perfect enemy to awake some hellish memories for Sanji.
But you are right, maybe the thing about Dofla isn't that he has a powerful crew, but also powerful allies / business partners. I'm not talking about the Yonkou, but people like Caesar who are not necessarily pirates. I mean, he did use the war to ally himself with Crocodile, so who knows how many strong partners he has who would aid him in a battle. If you ask me it's time for some asskicking, intimidating bounty hunters. Bounty hunters that are not introduced and shortly forgotten after. coughcoolbrotherscough.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I don't believe for a moment that Vergo is the strongest member of Dofla's crew.
The chapter said so?
-
I don't believe for a moment that Vergo is the strongest member of Dofla's crew.
I think Aohige read the raw and it apparently also says strongest subordinate
@Jabra: I think you are partially correct. DD obviously has extremely strong allies or rather those who depend on his services and thus would help him. I think though that he wanted Croc as his subordinate to which Croc also commented and guys like Caesar are also regarded as DD´s subordinate, at least by himself.
-
Impressive as it may look, it was complete overkill.
Was Law planning to destroy the SAD prduction machinery? I can't recall.
If not then it was a lot of effort to take out an opponent, who won't even be out - Yeti brother he cut in half the same way came at him immediately after, and needed to be put down by the "counter shock".
Doubt it will be as easy with Vergo. It looks impressive, but only because we haven't seen him counter attack yet, after all Law's "slicing" isn't the same as "real" slicing when it comes to people, more of an inconvenience than anything else.
Also, Caesar is ridiculous for tanking hits like that and springing back up. Hody shrugged off this kind of damage after taking ES, but Caesar isn't even a fighter, more of a scientist with an ability. -
