BECAUSE FUCK EVERY OTHER PLOT POINT, RIGHT?
Jeez. I fuckin love this list. Well done.
I think I better understood why I hated this chapter when I read all of these unresolved plot threads. There's just so much going on that I want to see that I don't have the patience to get emotionally attached.
This is the second time Oda tries to get me worked up about a problem I don't really feel connected to at all. Sure, it's terrible, kids drugs, oh my god. Sure it's terrible, fishy people are downtrodden and second-rate, oh no.
I don't know what it's about, but I just couldn't care less. From the second these kids appeared I was annoyed at the subplot. I started hating every moment that they were on screen, stealing huge panel space with teary expressions that I knew were meant to be big tear-jerkers but just didn't do squat.
I don't know, it's very hard for me to care, when all the cool stuff always seems to be happening just outside of the panel.
I was reading the last volume of berserk, and I remember getting teary eyed over a loving flower sprite, innocent and frail, trying to heal Guts with all her power until she wilted because she was so selfless and recklessly giving. Oh my god will she be alright? Will the Hero be able to reunite her with the other flowers of her kind? In less than a chapter I was more worried about this little cute thing than in twenty chapters worth of babies foaming at the mouth.
I mean I respect the man's decision to not kill, but you can't replace real tragedy with just making me spend time with characters I don't like, as if that will create the necessary emotional attachment for me to worry.
Nothing is going to happen to these kids. NOTHING. We know this, everybody does. And I'm supposed to worry?
Aren't we all just desperately trying to move on? We know everythings going to be fine, so there's no tension. There's no amount of Chopper's shooting gallery eyes and horrified Nami expressions that'll make me care about these kids one bit. So I'm sorry If I hate it, but it's difficult to care for children who we know will be fine, and sure they're having some withdrawal symptoms and it's terrible, but really that's all they've suffered through in their lives.
They haven't been tortured, they haven't been mistreated, at least to their knowledge. Sure they have been manipulated, and that makes me hate that evil bastard Ceasar, but I don't really give a fuck about the kids now, they'll be fine!
Am I horrible? I don't know. Maybe If Oda were to up the stakes. Maybe if the little toddlers were going to have shortened lifespan even if they stop taking the drugs. I don't know, honestly.
What I do know is this. If you already succeeded in making me hate the villain, let's go fucking trash him and stop wasting time! I don't personally care for Mocha, cause she's gonna be just fine! Why tease us with a death that's never gonna happen? If Oda does decide to kill off Mocha, then I´ll eat shit and build an Oda shrine in my broom closet, but it's so unlikely at this point that I can't stand just seeing so much panel space WASTED that could be showing all of that other good stuff I actually want to see.
I'm also seriously worried I'll start to lose interest in the series as a regular, because lately Oda just hasn't really done a good job in getting me emotionally invested in the present of the narrative. I'm already super hooked on what will happen, what could happen, and what happenned before, I love the characters, and the overarching plot, but the small things like this I just feel like a huge waste of space.
I don't know if anybody else feels like this. I also want real fights, stretching characters to their limit, showing us what they went through these past 2 years. This huge plot point, arguably the largest of the series, is being left untouched and that's fine, it builds expectations but there's always a dissapointment that comes along with not seeing so much of the stuff we really want to see, and having baby-drugs and stuff getting pushed in our faces doesn't help ease that pain for me.
Am I making any sense here? I respect that people may like this chapter, but aside from the humour, which was great, it did nothing for me. I just end up hating these kids everytime they slow the plot to a crawl.
