Yeah, I'm hyped that Kewl's group released volume 2. I really want more people to read this. I'm up to volume 5 with the Kodansha USA official releases and the story is really good(volume 6 due out in November). I think it is superior to Kojiki no Gash Bell so far. So hopefully Kewl's group will continue with it.
Konjiki no Gash Bell

What happened to Hyde? I know thw answer but wtf he was a good character, my favorite.

@Money:

Hyde was pretty much anime only. He'd have to be wiped out early on regardless. He appeared in the picture with all of the demons so I suppose his existence is canon.
Last time anyone really saw him was in that episode where Tio was introduced with him and his partner in the audience. (His partner was a pervert, no surprise here)
They weren't the best duo, and pretty sure after that fight with Gash, they didn't get much accomplished. If I had to have a theory, he was one of the ones wiped out by Bari judging on how Bari was pissed off due to not getting a proper battle in the last couple fights.
-
I'm glad to see others enjoyed Gash Bell as much as I did.
I've read this manga nearly 4-5 in it's entirety. -
hey guys hope you have checked out the Kodansha USA version of Animal Land, I've been translating that one for them.

I suddenly want to start buying thus series….
And damn, how many other series are you translating?

Just so you know, I am trying to get Doubutsu no Kuni scanlated. It mostly depends on getting cleaners, which I really lack. We got volume 2 done in the end because one guy volunteered to do the typsetting, but the person who cleaned it 2 years ago didn't really know what he was doing and just did some basic filtering and erasing the Japanese text, which is more or less all you need to do with volume scans. But that guy's long gone, and I need to try to find other people or else ask the guys working on Jojolion to take time out to work on it.
I do really like the series as it goes on, though. The beginning is REALLY slow though. It's about character building and making the atmosphere feel more real. But a lot of it is episodic and nothing seems to be of much consequence. It's not until Giller and Reimu show up that it really feels like there's a "main plot". They actually establish the "goal" at the end of volume 2. And it's after that where the larger mysteries and conflict start appearing. Which I think kind of redeems the earlier sections, and makes them work better because it retroactively gives them a point, since they develope the characters for the later parts. I really am enjoying the current arcs. It feels a lot more like Gash Bell now. (Not to mention all of the Gash Bell references, what with Umagon showing up and Quo's last name being Takamine.)
-
Besides the first two volumes of Doubutsu no Kuni translated by Kewl (thank you very much, by the way) I have looked until raws of vol 7 and the manga keeps getting better with each chapter. It gets more action oriented as far as the story advances, keeping a constant flow of dramatic moments and a mix of cool characters designs with the more silly ones that are the trademark of the author.
I think it's superior in almost every way to Gash Bell, Raiku is really giving everything he has with this work.
-
Raiku's weasel ninjas shit on Kishimoto's
-
Doubutsu no Kuni(released as Animal Land in the USA) volume 6 was released a few days ago by Kodansha USA in America and I was surprised to find an awesome Zatch Bell side story as an extra. It was really nice to see that. Too bad Viz never even finished releaseing all the volumes, but it was good to see Zatch in action again.
-
The one shot endibg was boss. Tyis series allways make me cry. I wish he would make a sequeal series
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I love Zatch Bell TO DEATH. Know where I can buy any figures/ spellbook replicas/ or things like that?
-
I read up to volume 8 of Doubutsu no Kuni. My god, Raiku is a real pro! The part where…
! the mother sacrifices to save the lives of her children had me on the verge of tears.
And it just keeps getting better. I don't know which one of the two series I'll like more in the end.
-
Kewl's group just released the remaining volumes of Animal Land:
http://hiwamatanoboru.com/2013/10/31/doubutsu-no-kuni-volumes-3-12/
And Volume 8 was released this month by Kodansha USA. It's the volume where the story becomes a lot more action-centric, unlike the first half which focused mostly on the growth of the main character.
-
Oh my god, the rest of the volumes?
I'm beside myself with emotion.
-
I pretty much shat myself when I saw all these chapters release at once. I loved the first eight chapters and after what seems like forever "BAM!" over 40 now. Holy shit, I'm going to enjoy this marathon.
-
Glad you guys like it. It's a really great series and it's been really frustrating for me that it took this long to finish. I was originally gonna try to do them by volume, but volume 3 got reaaallly delayed and the next like several were done. Then I realized if I tried to find people to work on different volumes at once, it was a lot more likely to get done then trying to get one volume completely finished before starting on the next one. Then it was taking a really long time to get people to do checking once everything was typeset, so I ended up finalizing every one, even volume 3, in the last couple months and have been going through each volume checking them one by one since then as the last 2-3 volumes were typeset.
The next volume comes out a week from today by the way. I'm gonna try to get that done fairly quickly.
-
That's awesome… Can't wait. I loved Gash Bell so I really hope Animal Land lives up to it's incredibly large shoes.

IMO Animal Land is better. The plot is deeper and the character development is excellent. And I'm still at volume 7.
-
Thank you Kewl0210 and your group for picking this up; amazing manga. I'm looking forward to reading the other volumes as they come out.
-
I just got based the Baby Arc… I'm doing my best to pace myself though.

I get the impression that Gash Bell is a bit overrated. I mildly enjoyed it, but after a while I got bored of it cause I feel it's too formulaic. In fact, I've quited it twice already; I feel like it's the same thing over and over again; every fight seems to me like it follows the same pattern (struggle - get trash talked - ignite the friendship power - win). The friendship last minute wins are strong in this one, and the speeches and "I'll stand up no matter what!" moments are too cheesy and dragged out. Maybe it's because. . .there's so many fights (it's basically non stop fighting) that this situation keeps repeating itself. In fact, I dropped it during that ultra melodramatic fight inside that humongous demon between the chinese looking kung fu demon vs. the weird robotic pirate thingy that blows himself up.
I think that fight alone (which is like, super long) contains such a massive amount of scenes with overblown tears, "I'll protect you!"'s, "I can do it for my friend!"s and the like, that I freaking dropped it right there.
I heard the last arc is quite hardcore, so maybe one day I'll bring myself to read it, but I don't know. The fights aren't even that strategic or well thought out, with some parts looking like it'll be a full blown strategic fight (like it should be, right? I thought that was the appeal of the manga. . .) but ending being just emotionally fuelled victories, so not even the prospect of fighting the big guns keeps me interested.
One thing I'll give to the author, though: goddammit can this manga be fucking hilarious at times. There's a couple of gag chapters where I completely lost it. He should totally do a gag manga. That'd be awesome to read.
Bottom line: How does Animal Land compare to it? Cause it does look interesting, that it does.

I have a very similar opinion to you about Gash Bell, and though I enjoyed it, I think Animal Land is leagues better than it. I highly recommend it, and if you do try it, give it to at least the end of volume 2. It has a bit of a slow build up, but you should be hooked by then.

I never read Gash Bell so I can't compare the two, but I can say that Animal Land is really good, strange and Super funny all at the same time.
The most important thing to know is that it brings important real life subjects, two or three(I will not tell which subjects, go read it!) and put them in the perspective of a fantasy world with supernatural stuff.
The author said that in the creation of the manga he didn't thought of talking about those subjects, but they naturally, but unexpectedly, surfaced in the history.Totally worth a try.
-
Also, don't forget, if any of you guys end up liking Animal Land, it is officially released in English by Kodansha USA and translated by stephen from this very forum

Ok, that seals it. I'm giving Animal Land a try.
In a couple weeks I'll report my feelings about it.
Thanks!

To each its won. I for my part enjoyed it from the beggining to the end. It's IMO one of the most enjoyable series I've ever read. However…
Bottom line: How does Animal Land compare to it? Cause it does look interesting, that it does.
It's leagues better, IMO.

The fact that Kewl highly recommends it is enough for me to read it. And it being from the author of Gash is more than enough. I'll try to support this series once I have the money to.
! Although JoJonium is too convincing of a purchase

I've got a soft spot for Gash, because that's the anime/manga that got me into fansubbing/scanlating. I think a lot of people might get turned off by the fact that the first 50 episodes or 10 volumes are kinda episodic. It doesn't really get good and build up character development until after that. Plus it has this sort of intuige about the spells, which all have meanings based around the words. Then there's other stuff like power levels, relationships, and strategy. Usually the main characters come up with tactical ways to win to compensate for not having as powerful spells. It usually goes deeper than a "power of friendship" thing because they also have to do with moral choices and things like that. Raiku is good at drawing emotion and making characters feel real. Though most of that's not as intense as in Doubutsu no Kuni.
DnK starts off slow and at first I thought it was kinda dull, then it gets better around when Jyu first appears in V5. Then a lot better in the adult-saga. This part actually makes the earlier parts better in retrospect, because you see how far the plot has been built and how the characters grew from one thing into another thing.
That said, the story probably won't go on for too, too much longer. Most of the plot points have been wrapped up now, and it specifically says they're going into the final battle in the previous chapter in Bessatsu Shounen Magazine. Also it has the cover and color page next issue for the release of the new volume.

I'm officially obsessed with this manga now… I can't believe more people don't know about it/talk about it...
-
Guaaaaaaaaaah everything was going so fine,
! and then I got to volume 8 T__T Monoko whyyyyyyy gawe;iubhgjawe;ijubhawe I'm so broken right now.
Anyway, Thanks Kewl for the large batch trans. Finished reading it today and now I'm beside myself waiting for what happens next.
-
I really can't seem to put this Animal country down. It's made me a lot less productive today than I would've liked to be though
-
I need to get back into this I only watched the anime and that was way back when it was on toonami. I don't rmember exactly how far I got I know Zeno was around I think a temple of some sort was involved.
-
Gash Bell is also a favorite of mine. It's shounen perfectly done. I don't really mind friendship power, that is part of the deal when you read shounen.
Like kewl said the mangaka is really good at describing the emotions of his characters.
Now I'm in the marathon reading of Animal countries. I love the design of all these animals and there are some great panels. Damn when will I have time to read Pluto… -

I think Homezslice is talking about DnK right now actually, but yeah, Victoreem is amazing in Konjiki no Gash!!
-

! Yep, I too broke down. At that point in time my mind was formatted to think that Monoko was unbeatable. I completely forgot that she was just a simply Tanuki. But even though she got eaten she fought like a badass. Would any other Tanuki make such damage to a Wolf of that size?
-

! I totally agree… Monoko was an excellent character and her death was handled so well... despite how devastating it was. I'm a little bummed this series is coming to end but I feel it's been an excellent ride. Makoto Raiku proves once again to be an excellent artist and writer who knows how to deal with characters on a deep and emotional level.

Well maybe you can make a thread for animal country if it doesn't exist yet. No need of spoiler tags and it will give more screen to a serie which deserve it.

This is true, I apologize.

So after years of knowing about this show and watching it back when it was new, I finally finished it, I watched it back in 2010 but when It went to Japanese dub I stopped watching because I wasn't used to it, so after now that I am used to I watched all 150 episodes and then read the manga, who else is sad that they didn't animiate it to the end? It would of been really sad but seeing Tio, Umagon, and Kanchome, with everyone's else final moments animated would of been amazing, especially the graduation when Kiyo and Gash say goodbye to each other before the fight with Brago.
-
I just recently started to read this, and I think it's awesome. Folgore is hilarious.
-
Oh I love this series, just really really hate that both the manga and anime never finished their runs down here, had to read the rest in scans. I love a series that isn't afraid to have the heroes get their butt kicked and know when to run to fight another day. Plus the rows upon rows of character developement for all characters. An underrated gem this series is.
-
I started rewatching the anime earlier this year. The character development is so good and the use of strategy is amazing. I need to finish it when I can.
This series deserves more love.
-
I liked the series. But I wonder if it really needs a sequel.
-
Mamodo Battles was cool. Never read the manga tho
-
I liked most of the series but it started dipping after Zeon and Clear Note was bad. Not really interested in a sequel.
-
And here comes the sequel
