@RobbyBevard:
Yes, Sayid seems to fall in love hilariously often, but note everything he does, those first couple seasons, and not just the lovey scenes between Sayid and Shannon. Sayid tortured Sawyer to get Shannon her inhalers, he tried to kill Ana Lucia when she shot and killed Shannon, he fought scary scary Mr. Eko in order to get to Ana Lucia after she shot Shannon, he told Ana Lucia to kill him, and later he made several references to the fact that it didn’t matter what happened to him because he was “already dead.” Even look at just the scene between him and “Henry Gale” in which he asks Henry how deep he dug his “dead wife’s” grave. That guy was in love. And, as for Shannon’s side of it, just look at literally every other relationship with a man she’s ever had. Sayid made her feel loved, happy, and safe for the first time in her life. Long paragraph short: Nuh-uh, they were both incredibly in love with each other.
Longer answer.
! On the subject of his love for Nadia and Island Love, let’s first talk about Love in general. How many times have you been in love? How many times are people allowed to love? What is love? Baby, don’t hurt me. No more.
! My point is that just because you love someone, it doesn’t mean you can’t love again. That would make life pretty depressing for a lot of people. Jack was married before he met Kate, Kate was married before she met Jack (and Sawyer), Claire conceived a child with her boyfriend before she met Charlie, Juliet had a husband and a romantic relationship with Goodwin before she met Sawyer, and Boone boned his step-sister before he met John Locke. Personally, I have been in love more than once, and I don’t think that negates the feelings I’ve had for any of the participating parties. To quote no one, “Love is not exclusive. Love is everywhere. Love, love everywhere, but not a drop to drink.” Or something like that.
! Now, let’s talk about Island Love. Is Island Love more “real?” No. But is it stronger? Kind of, yeah. I’ve discussed earlier about how important the Island was to the characters’ lives, and also about the Heart of the Island, which is the Source of Life. Both of these directly relate to the issue of Island Love, and to put it all together we need to understand that the main thesis of the show was essentially “Life is Love.” The idea of A Constant shows that most of all, but also look at the characters’ relationships and motivations throughout the series and how much love informed their actions. And let’s not forget the series finale, which is a pretty appropriate time to sum up your show. The survivors’ awakenings in the Sideways were based primarily on love. That Sideways world itself came from the Island, the Source of all life. So, I would say in relation to the Sideways world’s purpose and the very nature of the Island, yes, Island Love is stronger. If Life is Love, and the Island is the source of Life, then the very fabric of the Sideways world was built with the love that was born during the survivors’ time on the Island.
! So, while Sayid did love Nadia very much, his love for Shannon was more “real” in its connection to the Island, the Sideways world, their lives, and most importantly the thesis of the whole series. The Numbers and hatches and smoke monsters aside, that’s what the show was about. Maybe it’s a little corny, but LOST was LOVE.
! That’s okay, though. So were The Beatles.Hee, you totally copied that from that LostAnswers blogI
m on to you. No Shannons death wasn
t the actress decision. Naveen Andrews was even very upset with the writers in his eyes senselessly killing her. I agree with Nex about this being the worst main character death. It wasn`t bad, but compared to the others…..and it has nowhere near the same effect as Boones death had on the story (which basically caused the whole Jack vs. Locke conflict). -
Yeah, from what I understand about Shannon's death, she was told in the spring of 2005, when season 1 was still airing that she was going to be killed off, because they didn't have enough money for her contract, thanks to the addition of the tailies, and the Others (mainly Ben.)
Everyone was only signed to a 1 season deal originally, so when it came time for contract negotiations they did the most important people first which where Jack, Locke, new people, etc, and, unfortunately for Maggie Grace, Shannon really wasn't one of the important ones. And, Robby, as for the ending (forgive me for not quoting)
! I get that it's the quality of time spent on the island. But that hardly works for Shannon. She spent the majority of the time feeling completely useless like everyone hated her and she really only connected with Sayid minutes before she died in one of the msot forced "I love you" scenes ever.
! Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she's there. Once again, I liked Shannon's character and will always wonder about the potential she had. -
Sometimes death is quick and pointless. That's when its a surprise and a shock and you never see it coming and it hits hardest.
It can't, and shouldn't, always be a major world changing event thats built up to for an entire season as a major ongoing plotline between multiple characters.
@Nex:

Ben wasn't going to be an ongoing character initially, he couldn't have been a factor that early. And guest stars/short term day players get paid less than series regulars. Substantially less, in fact.
Seems like a minor thing when they could have easily written around it if they wanted to. Just have some characters alternate and only appear in every other episode… its what they did in season 6, and what many shows do that have large casts to keep costs down. Downgrade her from regular to guest or... any number of things. Of course, they couldn't know at the time how the cast lineup was going to shuffle ridiculously by season 3, so...
If it really was a money issue, then either she wanted more than the role was worth, or they just really felt she added nothing to the show and nobody liked her and had absolutely nothing to do with the character at all (I find that hard to believe given Boone died first.) or... they thought Sayid would be more interesting without her, and the audience would be shocked.
I lean towards the last thing.
I had assumed from how sudden it was, that it was trouble with the actress. But guess not.
-
Shannon was the most hated character on the show. Boone had being Locke's sidekick as a redeeming quality. Shannon had nothing (well, she was hot, but that's it).

People hate her more than Nikki and Paulo (Who, I'm told, are the most hated)?

After Boone's death, and the sheer nature of being on the island, she could have matured and changed considerably in time.
Oh well!

Because they just randomly appeared at the start of season 3 and pretended to be main characters… and then had their focus episode in the middle of the ongoing plots and questions.
! And by the time they had their focus episode that made them AMAZING… well... it was also their last episode.
When your marathoning the show they're a great change of pace. When its coming out piecemeal over the course of years… not so much.

I see. I thought their episode was kinda interesting.
! The spider that makes them "dead" for a while was just weird to me, but cool.
-
Their episode was one of my favorites.
But I can understand how they'd be irritating to people waiting weeks or months at a time for another scrap of information about the main plot.
-
Exposé is one of the show's best episodes. It'll probably be remembered better with time as the concept of "meta" wasn't as popular or well known in 2007.
-
Just finished up the batch of episodes for this weekend before I leave for my flight, and I can confidently say three things.
-
"Well… Ana Lucia's a bitch, she's a big fat bitch, she's the biggest bitch in the whole wide world, she's a stupid bitch, if there ever was a bitch, she's a bitch to all the boys and girls."
-
This is the best moment of season 2:
[hide]
I swear, tears every time.
And finally…
- The 23rd Psalm is the best episode of season 2. Yeah, I said it. We get a great flashback for Eko. Charlie finally gets a plot. And most of all, we finally get a good look at smokey. I remember watching this when it aired, and I was blown away. The flashes of people inside the smoke was fantastic. And I still love it. The only downside to this episode is that it shows the potential of Eko and his story line. Still makes me sad he wanted to leave the show.
-
-
Just finished… I'mma need some time to process.
-
I dunno. I loved the Nikko and Paulo episode, because was it ironic and had a dark sense of humor. It's one of my favorites for that very reason.
-
or… they thought Sayid would be more interesting without her, and the audience would be shocked.
To be fair, they were right. I don`t think their relationship served Sayids character particulary well, so I feel his storyline did improve through her death.
Exposè is awesome. Best way to make annoying characters awesome in one episode. The problem with Losts fanbase is that they are/were way to focused on answers. Yeah, I was longing for answers too, but if you can
t enjoy a very well done, entertaining stand alone episode like this because it doesn
t give you any plot infos…...meh, then you are watching a television show for the wrong reasons. -

Plus I was never home to watch it and so by the time I was interested it was so far in I decided to just wait until it was over before giving it a shot.
When I finally did, by about 3 episodes in I stopped caring about answers when I realized the show was going to be full of flashbacks and character development, and that the island mystery was going be less important than the characters. (It also helped that the show DID answer its questions along the way, they just present themselves better in marathon form than months apart… and when you're fully paying attention. I think most of the big questions were answered by season 3.) Nobody EVER talked about the character development and flashbacks, ever. It was always just bitching about the answers.
Were people watching the same show? And with that mindset its no wonder they were upset by the finale... its wasn't a 48 minute villain monologue explaining everything point by point.
-
finished watching the 1st season,it was very good,i know it's weird but i really lol'd when Arzt got blown up by the dynamite.also i'm starting to hate shannon and jack..
-
I never got why people were bitching about the answers….the questions were all answered! You just have to pay attention and think a little bit.

I think Arzt blowing up was supposed to be somewhat amusing in a very dark sort of way. Jack is annoying because he wants to be leader, but he plays favorites and doesn't keep a level head.

And the worst part is: it was like this from the beginning! If you go to some older Lost message boards and look through the episode threads for the first season, by episode 10 or 11 there was already complaining that they don
t answer anything, they have no idea where they
re going, blah blah blah (Anthony Cooper style). I think it`s amazing that the writers did such a good job with all that fan pressure.finished watching the 1st season,it was very good,i know it's weird but i really lol'd when Arzt got blown up by the dynamite.also i'm starting to hate shannon and jack..
Who didn
t lol when Arzt got blown up xD It was awesome. Regarding Jack, this might a little bit spoilerish if you have only seen Season 1 so I
ll hide it under spoiler tags:! Imho Jack is one of the worst and boring main characters in the first two Season and then suddenly turns into a pretty good character starting with Season 3. I like him and find him interesting in "Tale of Two Cities" and I love him in "I Do" where he turns into a total badass. He still gets annoying sometimes after that, but these two episodes really helped me to appreciate him more as a character.
-
I'm probably in the minority here but I really like Jack, one of my favourite characters besides Locke and Hurley.
-
Ah, I mentioned before about Desmond hearing the dynamite blast open the hatch. I guess he did…
We got up to "The Other 48 Days". -
I really liked 48 Days Later. I liked that there was a spy in both crashes. I think some of you counted it as filler, but I thought it shade a little light on the Others. Though I think it could've been placed better in the episode order. Its a little frustrating at first after such a big event happens, that you have to wait another episode to find out more; and after an hour you're still in the same spot you was last week.
What if 48 Days Later aired before the end of Abandoned, and is the episode in which we find out she's been killed. Then the following episode we could see a 10 minute scene of Sayid telling Shannon he loves her, but as a viewer we know what is coming up next.
-
I'm so behind. I just got done with Solitary (Sayid's episode), and this show pretty much has me hooked. I love pretty much every character for various reasons, my favorite probably being Locke. Typical, I know, but his story just made me feel so sad for him. And now, he's on an island and "gets it" for the most part.
Sawyer is quite a complex guy. Being a jerk because he wants to feel hated. And when he looked at the kid, the wild side of my imagination thought for a minute that it was him and he managed to somehow time travel without knowing it. How it actually is is better, though.
So much to say, but I feel like I should just watch more episodes.

No worries bud, I'm just 2 episodes in front of you. We are both behind, even though I've already watched the series twice before
-
Just watched Fire + Water and I realized another reason I hate this season.
For some reason the writers felt it was the best course of action to turn Charlie into a psychotic and then have him turn everyone in the camp against him. Then, somehow, it's all magically okay just a little while later.
He nearly kills them all by starting a fire. He takes Claire's baby twice. Not to mention what he does to Sun. And that's when the writers apparently realize that 'hey…the audience actually likes Charlie. We can't turn him into an outcast.'
But that doesn't even come close to how infuriated I get when Claire turns on him after finding out there's drugs in the statue. After everything Charlie's done for her, you'd think she could trust him a bit.
Also, Locke is totally out of character in this episode, and is just acting like a giant prick.
One finally thing. I hate how the Hurley/Libby sub plot is dropped halfway into the episode.
And so ends my Lost Season 2 rant, pt. 2.
-
Season 2 and 3 are great seasons for Hurley. Well, all seasons are really, but it's when he went from my favourite character to.."there's absoutely no way anyone else will ever take his place" favourite character..

I think his behaviour in this episode is supposed to be one of the first hints he
s losing his faith. Not only is he stuck with the annoying button duty, now Charlie, the guy he thought he helped to overcome his problems to become a stronger person in Season, seems to back to his old habits, making everything Locke has done so far completely pointless in his eyes. So, in short, he is frustrated and takes out his anger on Charlie. And to be fair, I think Charlies flashback this episode isn
t half bad imho. It shows how important having a family is to him, which is pretty important regarding his relationship both to Claire and Aaron. -
I no longer have any idea where any of ya'll are in the series. But.
For after you get to Charlie's Top 5 list from near the end of season 3.

! Maybe I should finish the entire series before I ask this, but it seems more likely that its just a writing mistake and will never be addressed. In season 4 episode 11 "The Cabin" Horace says that he died 12 years ago, but Alex is 16 and she was taken when she was still a baby. Am I correct in assuming that the writers slipped up, or did she get raised by somebody else for the first 4 years of her life?

You're trying to put together two different events that occurred at different times. Her age is fine.
Its dealt with at length in season 5, but I think you should already have most of the pertinent info already if you're that far into season 4.
! Alex is Russou's daughter. Russou went crazy and killed her entire team 16 years ago, followed by Ben kidnapping Alex a week later and raising her as his daughter.
! Horace was part of a completely separate group. The event that led to Horace's death took place 4 years after that, and has nothing to do with Russou or Alex at all. Dealt with at length in season 5. -
Not sure if I'll even be able to catch up to you guys in time. Up to the episode In Transition, and just noticed Hurley on the television in Jin's flashback.
So Charlie has that one moment where he meets Sawyer in his flashback, and then Sawyer meets Jack's dad in his flash back as well. It just all seems to convenient to be coincidence, so something big is at play here, whether it'd be fate or whatever.
And John Locke still makes me wonder. In Raised by Another, Locke has a white and black eye in Claire's dream, and I feel that's got some sort of connection to when he was talking to Walt in the first episode.
-
Very astute observations my friend. Having watched the show I will not comment on the matter.

Eh, don`t even try to catch up, just watch at your own speed. These guys are insane xD I think you mean Boone instead of Charlie though, right?

Ah thanks for catching that. Not sure how I mixed those up, but then again, they all went to Australia. :P

! We finished season 2.
Ya'know, I used to have a joke theory, that LOST took place in the Marvel Universe and that the island was the Savage Land and Magneto crashed the ship.
Well, I was close. With Desmond not being able to pushing the button and the big magnet pulling the ship down (that is what happened, right?).
Seriously, though, Desmond is my favorite character.
! Also, Penny answering the phone and finding out those guys may have found Desmond is awesome! -
Desmond is indeed awesome.
! I watched the Season 2 finale a short while ago and his scenes, both flashbacks and current time are the highlight for me, especially the scene where he contemplates suicide and the whole last scene in the hatch, where everything goes to hell quickly, are highlights for me
Henry Ian Cusick got a nomination for an Emmy or something for best guest actor. I don`t know if he won, but he would have deserved it.

Man, I know it's late and all, but Two For the Road was just…
:(
Fire+Water made me hate Charlie for a while, but I'm glad season 3 happened.
Which I just finished in a 16-episode marathon. :I
-
So we ended my least favorite season today, and on Sunday we start season 3. Or we would if we were actually going with schedule.
The only problem with the no schedule thing is the now lack of discussion.
So Silver! You're all finished! Tell us your thoughts on the series as a whole. Let us know everything!!
And Kitsune, I want season 3 reactions (especially the finale) now!And for those of you who started late, Sniper King and Mr. Zoro, where are you at and what are your thoughts?
And Robo Gorilla, where might you be now?
My main reason behind starting this, other than rewatching a series I love, was to get new blood into it, so I could vicariously see it again for the first time! So give me all your thoughts!
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
In other news, how many people here have seen Samurai Jack and.or Twin Peaks. Those are two other classic shows, I'm thinking about getting something going for. I know there's probably a good bit of people who have seen Samurai Jack as opposed to Twin Peaks, but both shows are such pinnacle examples of great television (SJ is a master class in visual storytelling and TP is what made it okay to do strange and inconvential things on television) that I want to get some sort of discussion going for them.
-
just watched the hunting party, god i love loke
! ,may be it's just me but i don't find season 2 less interesting than season 1 and i might be able to finish season 2 by tomorrow and catch up with schedule
-
Jojo! I'm sorry I forgot about you in my post! You are not left out!
And I don't think season 2 is less interesting. Hell, everything gets more interesting post season 1. I just don't think it's as good.
-
Season 1 was a fantastic start to the series. I like the vibe and tone of it, how how it focuses on mostly surviving and learning about the characters. None of the mysterious of the island ever overplayed the character, but I can see why that drived some people for the series. I was always in the mind set of wanting to know what happens next to the characters and not so much what did something mean, but I also didn't have a week per episode. A lot of the mysterious were better left up to "the island is magic". You're own personal theories will always be better to you than anything else. Though, later on the writers would start writing some pretty bad explanations… but I'll talk to about those when I get to em.
Most TV serious couldn't handle this big of a cast, and this show did it really well. While I could see others only focusing on Jack, Kate, and Sawyer; it was nice that characters that you wouldn't expect to get represented early did, like Sun. They treated the regulars equally and it pays off. Though, Locke easily took the cake for several reasons, mostly for his spirituality, being intune with the island, and just kind of doing everything right. Though they did contradict him a few times with Boone's death and the hatch. But Locke was the character we wanted to learn about the most.
The finale for Season 1 was an amazing cliff hanger. The characters we're making progress, we had self made attempt to get off the island... something that wouldn't be done till about Season 5. I liked the meta humor with the Biology Teacher, and how the main cast apparently act like they're the only ones here. Really funny, and as we learned in Season 3, that idea was always in the mindset of the writers... well til about Season 4. Hah.
I agree with a lot of you guys about Season 2. There's a lot of missteps and it really shows. The tail-end survivors outside of Mr. Eko are either unlikable and or mostly likable because of a connection to another character (Libby, Hurley and Bernard, Rose). Most of them don't really get a chance to shine because the writers got rid of them quick, minus two... but one goes away later on too. This season's big mystery isn't as charming as the first. Don't get me wrong, the button works; but it felt like a sub mystery after the hatch. And I feel like I should be jaded that the last mystery brought us a second mystery. Answering a question with a question, that won't be a reoccurring theme! It works.
The problem with the button is that I feel like it should've not have taken 20 episodes to figure it out. It took away from a lot of the characters exploring the island, which was my favorite part.
Alright. The good parts of season 2. The "Lit em up" scene is on of my top 10 favorite memories. The lockdown episode where lock saw the symbols on the walls, that was exciting. "Henry Gale" reveal was pretty awesome too. But f you go back.. you realized why did the french chick not realize this man was the same one who has her baby.
On the worst side, Micheal became a really unlikable character this season. Not even because of his betrayals. But because I got so annoyed with nothing but "WALLLLT" "MY SON!" It makes sense in terms of story, but damn did it get annoying.
-
But f you go back.. you realized why did the french chick not realize this man was the same one who has her baby.
The thing thats easy to forget with anything Russou says or does…
The woman was crazy. Not a "oh that girl is so crazy" in a joke way. Actually CRAZY.
Easy to forget, but that covers a lot of territory where she's concerned.
-
Maybe he had a disguise when he took Alex, too?
Also, Nex, I've finished season 2, and I love it!
Desmond is still my favorite. :)! My favorite part is his flashback with the system failure, the hieroglyphics and him realizing that he may have crashed Flight 815.
-

I really like this show so far, and how it's handled such a diverse cast so far is pretty great. I can't say there's any of them I really hate. Some are just jerks in general, but I still care about them.
After seeing Dues Ex Machina, I feel so sorry for Locke. :'(
Dang shows, getting me emotionally invested.
And I'm not sure if you saw my previous posts, but I've picked up on some cameos that some characters have made in other character's flashbacks. I don't think they're coincidental, and from what it seems, this show is going for more of letting supernatural ideas work while still making the show grounded in realism to a great extent, which is pretty refreshing in comparison to realistic modern shows which normally don't allow for supernatural stuff.
-
G4 is starting up LOST again on Monday. :P
-
finished watching season 2,yeah Nex now i can see why season 2 is your least favourite, the second part of season 2 it was good but not good as i expected,i hope the author won't change Locke into a 'sasuke' type character.I liked Desmond and his story also Anna lucia didn't thought she would die so early,i liked her character and looks
-
Oh good, we're a couple days away from that Season 3 finale.
It looks like the rewatch party might beat me, as I just finished The Constant AKA It's All Downhill From Here Because I Am Pretty Sure This One Won't Be Topped
-
Holy ahead of schedule…
We're on Ji Yeon right now. -
Just noticed the repeat title on the schedule. I'm pretty sure everything else is right.
