dunno. i'm just throwing stuff out there. but maybe that's how amon can do something only the avatar can do

Whoo! Finally watching the new episode.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who squealed like to stupid little fangirl when Mako and Korra fell asleep on each other's shoulders?
-
Speaking of Zolt, somebody isn't telling the whole truth about their origin.
! Hmmm, either he's Mako's (and/or Bolin's) father, or they're related in another way. Uncle/cousin/etc.
Oooh, I like this theory. Although I don't know how that would happen in the first place, but still.
Seems unlikely. Korra's been cooped up in the South Pole compound all her life.

Oh no, you are not. Me, and pretty much every fangirl in the fandom squealed their hearts out.

Apperently all earthbenders can metalbend, and all firebenders can now lightningbend. Can all waterbenders heal too?
I doubt that all firebenders can use lightning. Remember though that bending needs to be taught. Can it be used with raw skill, yes, but the majority of it needs to be taught. Lightning was for the elites, we only saw it used by Ozai, Azula, and Iroh. Along with that only Iroh, Zuko, and Aang could redirect it. Let's say that Sozin or Azulon was one of the few that could use lightning, it wouldn't be out of character for them to outlaw the teachings of it, along with it being an elite move very few people could probably use it.
Now after 70 years of teachings being exchanged, and an openness in communication that hasn't been seen in a century it makes sense that this could have been taught to much more people.
As for Metalbending, as we've seen in The Promise Toph started a school to teach Metalbending. My guess is that in its current incarnation, that school is a police academy. Obviously if some people cannot get the grasp of Toph's method of Earthbending, they won't be able to metalbend.

Finally saw first three episodes.
So far, a little unimpressed. I'm afraid I have no inner fangirl "squee" with KorraxMako, though–Mako's exceptionally bland thus far--and New Sokka feels entirely too much like an attempt to recapture the comic relief of the former series. None of the characters really caught me as particularly unique or likable thus far, and it just feels like the stakes are already significantly lower than they were in The Last Airbender (which might be an unavoidable problem).
But this might not be a bad sign. Follows the same experience I had with The Last Airbender, where I was underwhelmed with the series until I started turning the corner with Warriors of Kyoshi. Also, it took the writers a while to get a handle on the characters in that series--it's always weird to go back to the first few episodes and realize that Sokka was a little bit of a jerk initially. Wouldn't be surprised if it's not the same case here.
And calling it now: Mask-Guy's face isn't burned. In fact, he's actually an embittered Sokka, who decided that he received too little credit in the battle against the FireLord, sought and obtained immortality, and is now taking his vengeance upon those benders who stole his credit so many years ago. And no, I'm not being serious.

Katara didn't say Sokka was dead. Just that he was gone now. Like… Obi Wan said about Darth Vader?
Clearly the solution.

Series ends with an exhausted Korra covering Mako–already stripped of his powers--from an approaching Sokka. Then boomerang comes back and takes him out.
-
Also. Puberty finished Sokka off with a nice Steve Blum voice.
Maybe its the mask.

Too soon, man. Too soon.

i wonder, if you can take someone's bending away; with that same logic, can you give someone the ability to bend? I mean what gives people the ability in the first place. shouldn't anyone be able to bend with practice. i mean korra is not an air bender. right now. she has to learn to be an air bender.
-
I'm still not warming up to Papu as the cute animal mascot.Intill he saves team avatar's lives or contributes independently,Momo is still the best.
But I'm liking Tenzins family, and when's theres some Korra comics,it'll probably be Korra goofing of with Tenzin's kids.
It makes sense that most of the criminals are firebenders, seeing how their hands are basically unlimited flamethrowers.

Well we know bending comes partly from genetics, and partly from spirituality, which I assume comes from the type of environment and lifestyle the parents have before a person is born, and a person during the earliest parts of their life.
All of the Air Nomads were airbenders. Why? Because they all practice the lifestyle of a monk. Compare that to the other nations that are more spread out and diverse.

Good episode! The battle scene with Amon's henchmen (or henchwomen? Can't tell) was breathtakingly fluid and as always, music was the shit. I found myself most fascinated with the little bit of insight on how the world works though. For example the fact that power plants work with electricity generated by Fire Benders. Talk of human resources!
And yeah there is some massive shipteasing going on! All aboard the boat! Tenzin's little girls deserve more focus since they are hilarious playing on this fact hahahLast but not least, ditching some fanart I found here, and nobody can stop me!

LOL goddammit, no series final can top this now. No matter how hard they try.

On a more serious note, one thing I think this show is going to need is a really cool non-bending character. Would hate it if the show boiled down into special people and Muggles.
Always thought Harry Potter needed a badass Muggle character…
-
While Republic City is an amazing setting, I hope that we'll see what the rest of United Republic has to offer in the second season.

We're thinking that the character Asami will (hopefully?) become that member of Team Avatar. She's a rich girl who's an expert driver and has all the self-defense training money can buy. I think she could hold her own against benders and chi-blockers.
-
Sokka and Suki are dead but I believe they also left behind kids who run a kyoshi warrior/ sword master dojo. just my guess
-
^theres an earthbending kyoshi in the intro
-
I'm going to put it out there, Equalist theory
! It's a Soka descendant, whomever he is, is crafty, agile, smart, and able to combine Kyoshi's, Mai's and Ty Lee's martial style, with gadgetry.
-
My only complaint with the episode is how rushed it was. I wish it was at least ten minutes longer. The speed the episode moved made for some really awkward dialogue. A prime example being when Mako was telling Korra about his and Bolin's past.
It just felt strange. -
Was Aang the only Avatar to spirit-bend? I think that may be the case, because the previous Avatars were unfamiliar with the Lion-turtle (could just be the scenery).
So maybe Amon was a student of Aang who's using spirit-bending? He may have modified it so that he didn't have to spiritually battle a bender's resistance when he takes away their power. Or maybe Aang needed the strongest form of spirit bending to destroy Ozai's ambition.
Since lightning-bending and metal-bending are now common place, did Katara teach anyone blood-bending or plant-bending? I have also yet to see Korra bend water into ice. It would have been useful in the pro-bending matches.
-
Korra bended Water into Ice in the first episode when fleeing from the police.
-
Must have forgotten that. It's been 2 weeks or something, and I'm exhausted.
-
i would think blood bending would be illegal
-
I'm pretty sure Katara wouldn't make a point of passing blood bending along.
Considering she was, you know, horrified that she had done it.
And didn't even use it on Azula in the final battle.
-

Agree on all points. Just going to point out that you need a full moon to blood bend.

Why is it always a fire bender to terrorize a person why not a earth bender or water bender? bender racists.
-

Well, for one fire is one of the easiest element that you can get hurt by. Sure, a large piece of ice or boulder can hurt, but fire hurts more easily especially as it requires great control to bend. In any case, that's only the case for Mako's parents anyway, I'm not sure Amon is telling the truth about the firebenders in the past. Hell, I'm not even sure that his face is really hurt at all. After all, what he's doing is clearly propaganda to rally his base, and Fire benders is the easiest to demonize considering the 100-year old war and how it fits into his rhetoric.
-

I think personalities play a role in bending talents. With fire benders tending to be brooding and confrontational, earth benders to be law abiding but love a good contest, water benders focus on subtle but dramatic thoughts and feelings, and air benders love calmness and freedom.
-

The Earthbenders learned their lesson after Chin the Conqueror. Who knows about Waterbenders? They probably had an Avatar slap one of them down at some point as well.

There's a new clip from the next episode:
! Looks like Councilman Tarlok (sp?) drafted Korra into an Equalist-busting task force. Pretty violent scene, Avatar really loves it's grey-morality, don't they? I'm just wondering when Korra will regret partnering with him to take down the Equalists, belligerent though she is.

What's wrong with Bending characters?

! I feel like they are going to set Korra up as being the "Bad guy" to the public. I know the video is mostly out of context but what about learning chi-blocking is illegal? It just seemed like a dojo where kids learned to chi-block.
-

! That's essentially the picture. Most likely, they're going to take the 'Taking the equalists down' too far. While taking down the people going after benders is fine, there's a good chance at least one big power in the city'll have them taking down moderates who simply want more equality or protection for non-benders, or people who want to learn how to chi-block without resorting to violence. This will likely strike an outrage for the general public which will cause more people to side with the equalists.
! While obviously taking away every benders' power is extreme, having a world with no bending is going to look pleasant to most non-bending people since they're at a natural disadvantage to those who can bend. It looks appealing to those who are constantly bullied by those who can bend. Even a case with someone simply arguing with another person who can bend that falls back on 'I can light you on fire, freeze you, etc.' will get frustrating to non-benders. Most likely, people who can't bend won't be taken seriously to join a police force since bending now seems more common.
! Of course, a world with bending is still much more viable to the world in general. It's already been shown at least one use where the fire benders use lightning as energy sources. Along with that, it has plenty of other much more useful methods. This won't be how it seems to anyone can't bend though. -
i say once she can figure out the spirit thing, she will talk to aang and he will coach her on how to make it all better. she's strong, but she has no direction, no goals, no clue.
-
! Keep in mind that there would be a lot of internal and external pressure on Republic City to deal with the situation quickly, especially seeing as how the Fire Nation is run by Benders. If they can't resolve a situation with an organization that is openly declaring war on Benders, then one of the Four Nations will step in and do it for them. Of course, depending on who tries it first, there might be problems; especially if the Fire Nation moves first as I doubt that the Earth Kingdom will want the Fire Navy launching an invasion anywhere near their borders.
! Speaking of which, I wonder if the Earth King is still alive or not. -

! Speaking of which, I wonder if the Earth King is still alive or not.! The Earth King from the first series? Probably not, but in this series you never know. He was in his twenties before, so he'd be in his 90s at least . . . and there are a lot of really old characters . . . . At the very least I doubt he'd still be the ruling King and will have passed the throne on to one of his heirs, like Zuko has. Bumi didn't, but he's no Bumi.
! Tarlok is from the Northern Water Tribe. Maybe one of his political motives for creating the task force is either gaining rank in the Tribe itself, or accumulating more clout for the Tribe in Republic Cit in general. -
Never post here since I'm not a big "Avatar" fan, I mean I like it but I find it overrated.
With that said I'm digging "Legend of Korra" and the third episode made this new series automatically better than the first one.
-
It's overrated only because of its popularity. One Piece is technically overrated with the depth of media penetration that One Piece has in Japan. Human societies are like that. I'm not claiming that a complaint is being said, but just in case it erupts into a silly flame war between fans and anti-fans, I'm quelling the arguments now. There have been literal and actual wars in the past between fans and anti-fans. (religious wars, if you don't get my implication. Although the thought of a nuclear holocaust being instigated by a disagreement in taste for TV shows makes me both chuckle and sulk.)
As for the new development in plot, the first series had Aang saving the world not from the Fire Nation, but from corrupt rulers and powers and kept the world in balance. Korra doesn't have a clue to what's really wrong in Republic City, but just acts on her instincts. I think she'll really be developing the spiritual side of her Avatarship when she figures out what's wrong with people.
-
! Speaking of which, I wonder if the Earth King is still alive or not.
I'm sure Toph is still alive and kicking.
-
@RobbyBevard:
I'm sure Toph is still alive and kicking.
Traveling with Zuko, finaly having her lifechanging journey
-
no she's not. >_> I'll bet money on that.
-
Would be nice if in the promise part 2, Zuko and Toph have journey at least.
-
Toph is totally still alive
-
that would just take away from korra. They're the same spunky character type. And why would her daughter be the chief of police if "awesome toph" is still around. (unless she's retired and hangin with her best bud zuko) she's dead.
-
she doesn't have to play a huge role in the series but she's still alive
-
i'll bet you. :ninja:
-
K Sure
-
ha ha. deal. :3
you really think she's gonna show up, eh? :)
-
Avatar has the same problem as Harry Potter when it comes to how long people live; it's well established that Benders/Wizards can live well beyond a normal human lifespan, but the authors often turn right around and limit those characters to a normal lifespan just to explain why they aren't around anymore.
Bumi, Sozin, Azulon, Kiyoshi, and Pathik all had a lifespan longer than Aang's by decades or even a century in Kiyoshi's case.
