So i guess Ichiryuu and 0th is hiring extremely strong people for an important job.

Good chapter. Nice to see them bonding at night. So cute. I wanted to hug them both… <3 I'm impressed by how fast they're improving, too. I thought they'd take a little longer, considering how they were getting their ass kicked by the temple in the beginning. I wonder what exactly the shadow of unease is supposed to be... like is this Bishokukai doing something big or little or... idek
Where'd you guys get all these ages for the four kings... I mean I knew Toriko and Komatsu were 25 for the longest... Which reminds me, Shimabu really needs to have a good long flashback for the four kings sometime soon.

They have their stats in different volumes.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a little cruel to cut pieces off of a living animal, and just let it keep going around? I mean, even if because of FOOD HONOR the animal apparently feels no pain or whatever, that just seems like an awful thing to do. What if they just look at themselves? Won't they realize they're living in agony, with all their skin removed?

I thought about that too…It's both in a weird way inhumane and humane. The animal clearly isn't feeling pain, but it's also very sadistic. It's slowly dying yet it has no idea lol.
-
The chapter was good, and I'm liking this training, even with its cliches (-A normal people would take 1 month, they made it in a few days! Incredible!- must be the number 1 most used phrase in manga training arcs). The arc where everything will go to hell looks promising to say the least.
It's too bad I just can't feel a thing for Toriko and Komatsu bonding. Maybe it's because I don't like Komatsu, but that line about feeling so frustrated about Toriko losing that he felt like crying. . .or that he's having fun with this training because he's growing together with Toriko. . .It's just so enormously cheesy. Can't feel it at all.

I was unfortunately struck more by the fact that the fish shown during that was STILL ALIVE. It was basically a skeleton with scraps of meat; no amount of FOOD HONOR should allow a thing to keep living without a heart or gills or whatever, and especially not notice it for years. It's not like every animal out there is a housewife.

It might help if you consider that this training arc can also be considered a couples' retreat/couples counseling. They sorely needed it after Toriko left Komatsu to go get almost murdered at Gourmet World, their separation at the Gourmet Pyramid and Melk's valley, the fact that Zebra and Sunny are trying to get Komatsu to cheat on Toriko with them, and the whole Dourian(?) Bomb debacle.

Ozone herb arc established that they're gonna be a combo, and a potential legendary hunter/chef partnership.
Anyway,it was nice to see the pufferfish whale again after so many years, and Shyuu,Komastu and Toriko's face at the end of this page was hilarious:

I'm in the same boat with kouch_lee. I'm not a Komatsu fan. I like that he was designed looking odd, so not the stereotypical looking Shonen lead. But damn he's so annoying most of the time lol. I never like characters that scream at everything constantly. It's why I couldn't stand Tsuna, Morty and Sena. Fear gags get old when characters have been seeing weird stuff for years. Or see something impressive.
-
Komatsu is that connector link that brings them all together. The normal Toriko is far too impatient for this type of training but he's stoically sticking with it because Komatsu is there. I'm sure everyone appreciates Komatsu's role in the grand scheme of things but sometimes it needs to be readdressed. His most important role is making it so that all 4 heavenly kings can sit at the same table and eat together without being annoyed at each other.
-
Well it's nice that the 4 Kings and pretty much everyone else in the Toriko Universe loves Komatsu that they can put their differences aside. They get to eat his food. I just have to put up with his annoying personality I get no perks from him lol. And when we include the anime Komatsu we get to listen to his screeching.
I get that he has an important role to play, I don't have to like him :ninja:.
-
Seriously why do 4 heavenly kings need Komastu to eat same dinner table together? Komastu reminds of young Gohan always screaming and being annoying at the same time, hopefully he go through character development
-
Cause Komastu will be the one who cooks the kings full courses, and will probably be the only one who can make God,or something….
Jirou said something about needing to create a chef partnership,do Komastu is like Toriko's Sestuno, minus the fighting powers .

Not gonna lie, that made me laugh quite a bit.
About Komatsu being annoying, for me it's not so much that he's surprised and loud about every damn single thing he sees; Usopp could easily fall in that category, and I like him. For me, it's something else that I can't really put my finger on. He's just. . .annoying to watch. He makes want to slap him, I don't know why.
-

Still doesn't explain why he's the only one who can bring them together, never needed him in the past when they used to train and other sh!t together.
-
Yeah, well Akasha's disciples use to train together and were besties, and look at how that turned out

I can't find the view, but there is a video on youtube where a Japanese chef does something very similar. He cuts one half of the fish off then places it back in the tank. Perhaps it's a reference to that.
Edit: Ah, here it is.
-
Dude, I'm not watching that sick shit.
-
Well it seems cruel but:
A) The fish doesn't even notice, thus not feeling any pain.
B) It's said, it'll be capable of living for years, so it's not really a "aww poor fish, can't even eat". -
Does anyone have any theories on what GOD is or what it takes to make it?
I'm not sure about anyone else, but the vibe I get from GOD is extremely similar to the vibe I got in Full Metal Alchemist for the Philosopher Stone prior to its origins being revealed. In particular, the fact that the Nitro are linked to GOD, and the fact that some of their recipes would "send chills down your spine" tend to reveal this early. For reference:
!
I don't think it'll be just as straight forward as use complex recipe + humans = GOD though (unlike FMA in where that was the only way of getting a stone). A common theme in philosophy is that there is more than one way to reach God. If GOD the ingredient mirrors that thought, then there'll probably be more than one way to actually create it. It'll just be setup so that the way Midora is going about it is the evil/kill lots of people way, and the way Komatsu stumbles upon it is the good or "true" way.
Should be interested to see how it's actually written in the manga when the time comes.
-
Rin or whatever her name should have had the same powers but she should have been given Komatsu's cooking skills and been Toriko's partner instead at least she can help a bit in a fight also can avoid low level beasts so it would have been funny having her around it would be like Sanji and Nami from one piece Sanji never gets any but at least he is funny.
-
Rin has no powers at all, she only has a bunch of weapons that anyone can use, as long as they know under which circumstances and the amount of the dose.
Also, she is way more unbearable than Komatsu, with her obsession over Toriko (thought i don´t find Komatsu umbearable at all, yet a lot of people here seems to…)

I like Komatsu more than Toriko. Toriko is about as generic as they come, the only things that set him apart from other protagonists are his age and physique. He only barely has a personality (He's a glutton! And, uh…). Toriko himself is probably the least interesting character in his own series.

I feel the same way. Toriko isn't interesting, but at least he isn't unlikeable. I'm never annoyed by him. He's just there. Actually, I don't really like any of the good guys personalities or character designs, except for maybe Zebra and Komatsu. I like the bad guys. Weird because I usually favor the main protagonist in the series I read.
-

And he's pretty knowledgeable, not like Luffy and Naruto…and uh..Ichigo.

I'd say this is not Toriko's fault. There hasn't been any flashbacks so far so we don't know where do the Heavenly Kings come from, what were they like as children and so on. Also each King has his own style and character, and Toriko has charisma, this is why it feels like the entire series is a cakewalk for him aside from a few encounters (Tommy, Stayjun). I think he's an interesting protagonist at least for a shounen. He has confidence and reckless, but can back them up with power almost every time. He's pretty smart and knows what's going on in the world. So it almost feels like he's too perfect that's why he seems a little bit empty, because he has no major flaw aside from his lacking strength.
-
A main character should be someone who instantly grabs your attention, has personality oozing through his pores and isn't charismatic just because well, people say he is. Being able to spout exposition is not exactly an interesting character trait, and Toriko is altogether too… normal for me to really care about. Just a friendly, food-loving guy of slightly above average intelligence. What would a true "toriko character moment" be? Only Coco is less interesting, and he's right up there at the top of the popularity polls. Ergh, Japan.
Shimabukoro has character designs down sure enough, but isn't exactly world champion on writing them.
-
I call for Sani to be the new main protagonist. Forming a combo with Zebra.
-
The two of them aren't likely to get along well.
On another note, has anyone noticed this in this week's episode?
Hmm, purple fruit with weird pattern and green leaves, now where have I seen that before?
Strange that he did not gain any new powers. -
Toriko was fine at the start of the manga because his uber elite status gave him an edge but now that we've discovered that he's nowhere near the top tier, he's pretty much become a much more boring character.
-

I think we can all agree Rin is a terrible character.

Polls from the same target audience that catapulted Shrimpo and Mr. Life is Pain in front of Bleach's main character.
Then again Toriko at least acts a little bit more like a human, compared to our ginger friend, doesn't he ? Still, I agree that he's a bit on the boring side, honestly the four kings are a bit meh as far as character goes.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

This mainly stems from the fact Shimabukuro using her so rarely, and when he does her role's over by the time she finishes doing her stalking and googley-eyed shtick. Hell, has she ever had any proper interaction with Sani ?
-
Zebra and Sani are the only ones of the main characters I really enjoy. Coco is extremely boring to me. I really don't get the fan love for him. His power is neat though, I like the idea of a poisonous human. Toriko I think it more interesting than some leads based on character design alone, but he's fairly level in personality. He's just a nice guy that's strong.
edits I don't think we've seen Rin associate with Sani in a very long time in the manga. Since I guess if Toriko is near by all her focus goes to him. Back stories at this point would really help with the character interactions I think. We still know practically nothing about why the characters are the way they are now.
-
Shima needs to graduate the Oda school of backstories
-
@Thousand:

But most of character progression in manga/anime stems from the ability of characters to progress and grow, so you can work with them and see their development. A ridiculously extreme example of this would be something like DBZ. If Goku could got super duper Saiyan right off the bat, none of his fights would have had any suspense or interest (not saying that DBZ is a good show though, but it was able to build suspense…while a spirit bomb charged for 10 episodes). Just like if Luffy was pirate king, Ichigo got his bankai, naruto could control his beast, ect. ect. right in the first episode. These shows seemed to be designed for the sake of lasting a LONG time because of the fact that the characters need time to grow and seek some unknown ultimate position. The really good anime that typically last only like 26 episodes typically start with characters that are amazing right off the bat, like Trigun. They typically build suspense by not revealing the characters true power until the end. They are different kinds of anime though. Since we now know Toriko is not "top tier", we can see him train and develop and work through to ultimately become at the top. Although we did know pretty early on that there was a whole different part of the world (gourmet world), that Toriko clearly isn't a part of, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he would need to train and overcome some more powerful people along the way.
That being said, Toriko's personality is rather bland and monotonous. His sole driving force seems to be very self-centered. Someone like Luffy you could also kind of argue is self-centrered because his only mission is to have a fun adventure and live on the seas freely as pirate king, but he clearly cares about his crew and also wants them to reach their goals too. Komatsu wants to increase his chefness (ITS OFFICIALLY A WORD), but Toriko only seemed to form a partnership with him so he could have the food he captures cooked. The writer attempts to make him seem to have more personality/depth by adding in a sympathetic character like Komatsu, but alone Toriko just wants to eat. That seems to be his only motivation. There is also the evil organization also just trying to eat, which I guess is there to contrast Toriko and force him to be the good guy, but only because they are the bad guys. I don't think we have ever been deceived about who Toriko is or what this show is about though. The guy just wants to make his full course and we are here to watch his adventure and see all the amazing food/creatures he comes across.
-
I wonder how the anime will handle the Master Chin/penis jokes;cos I read another manga with the same chinchin/penis jokes, which was changed in the anime…..
-
The best part about Toriko is that he's not an idiot and is actually quite knowledgeable. A nice change of pace from idiots like Luffy, Naruto, Natsu, blah blah blah.
Edit: Lol just noticed that this has already been said, my bad :)
Ichigo's supposed to be really smart, actually.
Yeah… he's shown to be an idiot for the entire manga until he loses his powers and they show that he gets good grades in school...I think the author did that to set him apart from an obvious idiot like Renji but at that point I didn't really care anymore.
-
I enjoy Toriko, but there's not much heart there. It's just balls. Lots and lots of balls.
-

They showed Ichigo having good grades before the Soul Society arc. It was the chapter where they introduced Ishida iirc. So pretty early on he was supposed to be a studious guy that knew his stuff. But it was really only mentioned like once and I think after that Kubo forgot Ichigo was supposed to be smart….Not like he ever uses strategy for anything anyways.
At any rate, it is a nice change of pace with Toriko not being a total nub. I like that he's not at the point of being the strongest, but there's not much of a list above him.
-

It was shown much earlier than that. Close to the beginning of the series.
-

Yeah, I saw what cyclone said and it's been awhile since I've read bleach from the beginning. Think I stopped rereading it after Ulquiorra died.
As for the chapter, I'm more interested in Komatsu's growth than Toriko's. Toriko's improvement in speed and power is obvious but Komatsu's seems more cooking oriented. I already felt that he had a lot of food luck, but add food honor to that and he becomes a different sort of monster altogether. Probably a necessary requirement for him to be able to properly prepare the bubble fruit.
-
I'm guessing this saga now very similar to Dragon Ball.
Especially with the training much like when Goku arrives at Kami's palace to train.
-
I think what Toriko (the manga) needs the most is backstories and flashbacks. I can't believe I want flashbacks in any manga, but Toriko is definitely the one that just aches to have some character background. The only ones we've seen so far are:
-a panel where Jirou and Setsuno were young
-a panel where Toriko and co were younger and Ichiryuu were training them
-a panel were Komatsu and his 2 friends are cooking
-some Acacia flashbacksAny more than these?
-
-
^10x more awesome series.
@tatermoog:I enjoy Toriko, but there's not much heart there. It's just balls. Lots and lots of balls.
The only reason I read Toriko is for the awesome world, beasts, and abilities. It lacks OPs storytelling and ability to connect emotionally, and its not as over-the-top brutal and serious macho as Hokuto no Ken.
What Toriko really needs now, which made Regal island and Ice hell so great is higher stakes; it's still about hunting for food, but it's also a battle for their lives against other, sentient beings. It's the difference between trekking through a dungeon and fighting characters relevant to the overall plot, or fighting some big beast that lurks there with no relevance to anything.
-
Any more than these?
There were one or two panels for Takimaru. xD Also Mansam remembering when he first met Toriko in the Gourmet Santa-chapter
-
So apparently there's a _Sekimatsu Leader Den Takeshi_ manga volume coming out on Friday.
-
This post is deleted!
-
I think that the reason why we never got anything but one or two vague recollections of the main characters' origins will probably play a role, as demonstrated by Mansam in the christmass chapter. But I still am a tiny bit confused why Komatsu hasn't ever gotten any backstory. I mean him meating that Ootake guy was the first time I remember his past even being brought up any. That and him actualy knowing other people before he met Toriko.

Cool!
16 characters of I wrote b*llshit so now I had to comment something lame like "cool".(mods please delete this post)
There's a delete button when you edit.

Komatsu DID sort of get a backstory. In the chapter with Ootake, he talked about how he had two dear friends who wanted to be great chefs and their dreams and such. One such friend we haven't heard about yet, while Ootake got kidnapped by the Bishokukai. Also about his knives and his training with them. He's a fairly normal guy, he may not have much more of a backstory. Komatsu, in large part is the audience proxy. He doesn't know what stuff is so other people can explain it. But I feel that once they get through the training arcs they'll explain more of the larger story. But in order to expand the story they need to have more of these sorts of cliffhangers and foreshadowing.
