Official Manga/Anime Recomendation Thread

Cool, i recognise that one. I've seen clips from the anime a few times, and it does look pretty funny.
I think 4chan's /a/ board likes to talk about it too.Adding it to my list of things to check out.
-
Theres so much manga I want to buy, but guess what most of them aren't ever gonna be finished in America.
Reborn, Zatch Bell, Gintama, Cyborg 009, and the list goes on and on.
-
Don't mention Zatch Bell, that's a fresh wound to me.

Well, Fuck VIZ!!!!!

Hourou Musuko or Black Lagoon? Which manga should I read first?

Hourou Musuko or Black Lagoon? Which manga should I read first?
Essentially it's the age old question of: should I watch Die Hard or Billy Eliot. One of them is an action movie without much depth plotwise or even really character wise but it's a lot of fun (I assume I haven't read Lagoon or watch DH I just happen to be fairly genre-savvy). The other is an extremely character-oriented story focusing on the challenges of life (Billy Eliot probably isn't the best example I could've used but it was the first that came to mind and the premise is fairly similar to Musuko from what little I know of that series).
Point is it really depends on what you're looking for at the moment. Do you want a good story or are you just looking for a good time? Musuko is probably much better written but Lagoon could be much more enjoyable depending on the mood you're in. You should probably try them both out to see if they're interesting to you before you decide. Once again, very different series. Probably best to get more opinions beside mine since I haven't read either series. But I'm probably right that they're totally different in premise and content.

Is Black butler any good?

Should I give Bakuman a shot?

Should I give Bakuman a shot?
It's very good, has some minor points such as the two main characters only being really interesting when they brainstorm and some arcs that tend to be somewhat uninteresting.
But it pays off with having incredibly intense cliffhangers, incredible character development etc.
What turns alot of people off though is it being a very talkative manga. If that is a downer for you or not is up to you.

Hmmm, sounds pretty good from how you've described it.
I don't mind a manga with a lot of talking and exposition. I just wanted to know if it turns bad or goes downhill later on. -
I suggest everyone read 7 seeds and watch sunabozu. I'd also like to know if jjba is an easy read? I don't want anything to mindboggling right now:blink:.

Now that I have time I want to start reading a new manga and a friend recomended me Mahou Sensei Negima.
Would you recomend it? -
@Ura:

Would you recomend it?Beginning is pretty terrible. You need to get past the first fifteen or so chapters till you get a glimmer of it's potential. Around chapter 40, it detonates in quality and has been rising in quality ever since. Right now it's one of the best shonen currently running on par with One Piece in terms of story, fights, characters (great, great characters) world building, backgrounds etc. It's only flaw is the fan-service which can be excessive at times.

add to that the love interest stuff. . .basically after a while you will find yourself skipping the love "dorama" as it just gets old and unnecessary. BUT that being said, if you can just look ast that, and the fanservice(unless you like fanservice) you will enjoy this manga a lot.
Really the only reason that this isn't as popular in Japan as one piece, is becuase of the fan service. . .just imagine it as One piece, if luffy had a harem, kissed lots of girls, and lots of naked women hanging around everywhere. . . .
or like a One Piece: XXX version

The romance is great. I personally love it. It's always emotionally moving and tastefully done. It's annoying that it moves the character development for over half the cast but the execution itself is great.

False, the reason it's not as popular is because One Piece runs in Jump and Negima in Weekly Shonen.
It's not like One Piece never had fan-service including pages of a bunch of women running around naked coughAmazon Lillycough
-
Bullshit. It wouldn't make a difference if negima was published in jump, it still wouldn't be as popular, look fairy tail is in the same magazine as negima and it's much more popular than negima not to mention negima's been running longer than FT.

Popularity in terms of fame in Japan not in terms of comparison to the series in the same magazine (you can blame childrens' terribly shallow taste in that). Jump is THE shonen magazine, it gets the most coverage, it's where Dragonball once lived and where One Piece now resides after all.

Ok what you're trying say is if negima was published in jump it would be as famous has OP, dbz, naruto, bleach etc around the world. Maybe who knows but if stuff like FT can get has popular as it is even if it's NOT being published in jump then negima shouldn't have any excuses right I mean shonen magazine is only second to jump.

Erm if you're talking about things like tankobon sales and Oricon, it does pretty damn good in them as well (as good as Fairy Tail if not better).

http://mangahelpers.com/forum/showthread.php/43468-Weekly-Shounen-Magazine-(Shounen-Mag-by-Kodansha)/page30Yes, really. But this is all a superfluous argument since quality/=quantity and it's a fact that Fairy Tail sucks ass. My original argument was simply it would be more famous in Jump which has the better sales magazine wise which is kinda a fact.
-
You're probably not defending that point as much anymore Lion but thought I'd put this up. Negima is 40 currently.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-08-05/top-50-manga-creators-by-sales-since-2010
Yes I'm sure Negima would do better if it was in Shonen Jump, but that's not the only reason why it's popularity is as it is, but you said it yourself popularity doesn't determine quality of work, but quality of Negima a different topic altogether.
-
I feel like we should really make a thread for "Is quality subjective?" because I personally don't know where I stand on that argument. On one hand when I hear people say "It's a fact this series sucks" I tend to get annoyed because I don't fully agree. But on the other hand I fully agree with the statement made by The Sea "Saying Bleach has good story structure or good pacing is just plain wrong." So I feel we should really make a thread on that one.

Food for thought.
Full Metal Alchemist was so popular, it outsold Bleach and Naruto in per volume sales. It was the only contender to One Piece and Nana for a long time.
….. and it ran in Monthly Shounen Gan Gan, which has far, FAR less sales and popularity than Jump, Magazine, or Sunday.
(People joked it Monthly Comic FMA, since FMA's reign pretty much outsold everything else in the magazine combined)When a manga reaches certain point of popularity break, I don't think the magazine it's published in matters anymore. lol.

Exactly. -
That happened because FMA is a glorious, glorious masterpiece of Shonen comics of course.
Btw, I remember while I was reading the Negi vs Rakan fight (the legendary battle) asking myself "Why The Hell Is This Less Popular Than Naruto and Bleach?!!"
-
I was thinking of starting Skip Beat (a shoujo, I know). Can anyone vouch for its quality?

Around what chapter is that? These last four volumes of Negima that I have read (13-16) have finally grabbed my interest and turned me into a fan. If the rumors are true and it's all gravy from here on out I am happy I toughed it out.
-
Jack Rakan fight is during the magic world arc around chapter 240-248. And yes indeed, it is every bit as awesome as is rumored.
-
i have red negima until chapter 290 or so. than i was so annoyed by the story, the battles and the characters that i quit reading it.
-

I vouch for it ^^, at least I enjoy it.
In a sense it does not feel like a regular shojou.. the main character is more occupied with hating the shit out of her prince than ..well.. the regular shoujo main character duties?I admit that the last 20 chapters or so were boring, but if you got this far you can push through it anyway and I have high hopes for the new LME Trio just introduced.
-
Yeah I just picked it up. It's a very interesting shoujo to say the least. I love the main character and how much of an unconventional heroine she is. She's a strong, determined, independent female done right (I can't count the number of "strong" females done clumsily who end up being nothing but annoying bitches that fall for a man anyway). Very good character, good art and good writing so far. Hopefully this keeps up.

Can somebody recomend Defense Devil? Its from the team that made Burning Hell and i would like to know if this manga is good.
-
Hi
Can anyone please recommend a few mangas to me as I dont really know which are good or not. I have read liar game, one piece, deathnote, blue dragon, naruto, fairy tail, tenjo tenge and gantz. Out of these I really hated gantz and enjoyed liar game, death note and one piece with the others some where in the middle.

Full Metal Alchemist, Berserk, Toriko, Gintama (Though as I've heard much of the scans are bad and since official english version was cancelled, I'd recommend watching the fantastic anime version), Beelzebub, Sket Dance, Hunter x Hunter are all fantastic series that I think of off the top of my head

It's decent. Good art, nothing special story wise. It fails to really go places, which is a shame, because the characters are likeable enough.
Disappointing finale though.

Along with the series Aaronrules mentioned I'd also recommend:
Mahou Sensei Negima
Eyeshield 21 (don't worry you'll probably enjoy it even if you don't like football)
Soul Eater
Bakuman (by the same authors of Death Note btw)
And of course, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. The masterpiece.Edit: Oh yeah. And Vinland Saga is definitely worth looking into.
Edit 2: I'm starting to think that I should really get around to reading Sket Dance. Guess I'll add that to the pile of series I should check out.
-
Should I give D.Gray-Man a chance?
-
Oh yeah, forgot about some of those somehow. But with Negima, I feel the need to issue a warning about its extremely poor start and heavy fanservice
-
Should I give D.Gray-Man a chance?
I didn't finish it, but what I read (roughly 150 chapters I think) was mostly pretty good so yeah I'd say give it a shot. I might've added it to the list of recommendations but I still haven't gotten up to date so I didn't feel quite right about adding it.
-
Okay, I'll add it to my Must Read Eventually list
-
i think ill start durarara!!
any comments? -
i thought it was pretty meh, it had it's moments but i just didn't really get into it. Though of course i was comparing it it the awesomeness of baccano
-
Not NEARLY as good as Baccano.
Lackluster second half.
