Dear god, Big Mom is gonna make Lola look like Hancock in comparison.
I love the design.

Great chapter, very tension filled and gives us a glimpse at the next enemy. Suppose it was only a matter of time before Luffy pissed off a Pirate Emperor. Still pretty ballsy that he would declare Fishman Island under his jurisdiction. He wasn't kidding when he'd said he'd protect it.

So all that's left now is the crew getting a new compass and the final goodbyes. Bar Big Mom not trying anything rash. Your move, Oda.

*** Well so much for all that build up around Coribu. Poor guy doesn't even get the dignity of an on-panel beating. Still, one punch, wow.** I was actully chuckling at the Monster Trio lifting up the treasure together. They're so in sych its not even funny.
- So Big Mom's crew has sort of a fairy tale theme. The whole tea party and B.M's personality smacks of Alice in Wonderland and the Queen of Hearts. Wouldn't be surprised if the three eye'd girl is suppose to be an Alice motif. Heck even Sir Pekoms and Tamago remind me of the Mad Hatter and March Hare.
- LOL at Sanji deception of Big Mom. Oh I can imagine his first seeing her. "THATS A FEMALE?! FEMALES ARE SUPPOSE TO LOVELY AND CURVY! SHE'S A GORILLA!"
So all that's left now is the crew getting a new compass and the final goodbyes. Bar Big Mom not trying anything rash. Your move, Oda.
This reminds me of something Blackbeard said when he was fighting Ace followed by something Van Auge said:
Seems Coribou (SP?) is crap without his DF.
@RobbyBevard:
He doesn't need to hold it yet. Its still under Big Mom's protection until he beats her. And by the time he does, he'll be strong enough and famous enough to take care of it. He is NOT going to go fight her next chapter, its too soon for that. This is a confrontation thats going to build for a bit first. it might be a couple smaller islands and a 100 chapters before they actually meet face to face. (Thats how long it took for Crocodile.)
Dunno: it does make sense but i can't imagine Luffy doing that (1st section i highlighted).
I do agree the 2nd section i highlighted: no way in hell he'll fight her any time soon, IMO.
@ RobbyBevard: i added something to the OP a bit: hope it's ok.
Does anyone know what Zoro meant when he said, "I got it, he's a compass!"?
Thanks in advance!
And then the Strawhats get a rude wakeup call when the first round inevitably ends in them getting curbstomped.
Jesus, Big Mom is terrifying.
It's nice to see Kidd getting mentioned. Can't wait until he and the Strawhats meet up.
This chapter was an excellent way to end the year~
Astonishing colorspread, no one draws colorspreads as good as Oda does =D
Very good chapter, it was worth the waiting, I liked all the build-up about Big Mum and the sweets issue, Luffy's declaration of war on Big Mum was the icing on the cake, Luffy looked very resolute/badass upon saying that, as someone said in this thread, if Luffy said he's gonna clobber Big mum is because he knows that he has what it takes to do it, don't get carried away for the Hody's bite Luffy received, I'm sure Luffy hasn't showed yet what he is truly capable of after this two years, that aside, I didn't like the egg-like guy's and tiger guy's designs, most likely they aren't Big Mum's most strong crewmembers though, looking forward to the next chapter =D
greetings
I agree awesome chapter this week.
Big mom looks scary!
Well now we know what Madame Shirley's prediction really was about. I can see Big Mom sending most of her forces straight to Fishman Island now that Luffy has claimed it and declared war on her.
Freaking Luffy lol, at least he's taking charge as more of a "King of the Pirates" now then he was before the time skip. Its called character development, and the transition really was an easy one to make.
EDIT: Is it just me or does Pekoms look like the cat version of Ms. Merry Christmas from the Alabasta arc?
So basically, Zoro is saying that the way he walks resembles how one uses a compass, right? Now that looked at Baron Tamago again, I can really see him walking that way.
Thanks!
On the side note, for those who think that Baron Tamago looks like Dr. Eggman: Tamago means "egg" in Japan, so I wouldn't be surprised if Oda got the inspiration from Eggman when designing him.
Also, I'm now wondering what Big Mom's relationship with Garp is. Friend? Respected enemy?
I can't wait until this chapter gets animated, it will be so much more epic
For some reason, I am just having a hard time accepting Big Mam as a Yonkou by just reading some text bubbles from a den den.
I just can't wait until the anime gets there and we get HER VOICE. Like back when we first heard crocodile over the den den mushi back in his arc. Now that was chilling and intimidating. I'm having a hard time getting that feeling while reading these bubbles.
I'm hoping for at least three great arcs hyping Big MomThen im hoping that the StrawHats meet up with the Kid Pirates and fight her crew. Then Kid and Luffy fight seriously In predicting that in two or three chaps,we'll see Kid
Also, I'm now wondering what Big Mom's relationship with Garp is. Friend? Respected enemy?
Well, Garp is "The Hero of the Marines" who fought with Roger on several occasions. I'm sure he tangled with her and Kaidou in the past.
Also, anyone else picture Big Mom having a laugh of "Ehehehe!" Like a (fairy tale) witch?

No, he is saying that his body resembles a geometry compass.
No, he is saying that his body resembles a geometry compass.
I think the panal he says it, the guy does indeed spin like that compass when he turned though. So not only does he look like one, but his turning motion is the same as well.
Sanji's thought of Big Mam vs. what we saw of her = DRAMATIC IRONY

But regular compasses don't work on the Grand Line.

Not a copmass that points North, its a geometrical compass. Things you use in math class. Totally different things. Think its called a drafting compass.
Someone posted a pic not too many posts back that show a compass spinning just like I think this guy spun when he turned directions.

This chapter was amazing. It gave me massive Whiskey Peak vibes. Back then Luffy had just entered the GL and in a few chapters we met the lackeys of a huge figure back then, a shichibukai. Now we're upon entering the New World and we see the lackey and Luffy facing up to confronting a yonkou. And the scene with him taking away the den den mushi and saying all the "wrong" stuff was amazing. I'm excited!
Also, I really doubt Kidd will accept an alliance with Luffy. Maybe unwillingly they'll help each other in fighting Big Mom, but it's very hard to imagine Kidd wanting Luffy to steal his thunder.
Oh, and I want Luffy to draw his terrible version of the Straw Hat flag on buildings!! That'd be great!!
The animals looks pretty cool. Great chapter too.

If Big Mom does indeed have an acid or stomach acid DF (as Oda's hints seem to suggest), Kidd would have a hard time against her solo since his DF (and even one of his arms, apparently) center around metal and magnetism… she'd just dissolve anything he threw at her. Like someone pointed out, Rubber fares pretty well against acid, so Luffy would fare much better against her.
On a less serious note, I hope that the girl (her daughter, possibly) can shoot a laser from the third eye.

While it would be funny, in a terrorifed voice it would be too traumatic for the citizens! I hope that Usopp interferes and paints it!

I'm glad someone got the point I was trying to make. Unfortunately, I was getting tired when I was typing it and was hoping I got my point arcoss. Perhaps somecame behind and made it more cleaarly than me. While I mentioned that rubber has difficult time to dissovle I forgot to point out that metal dissolves faster.
While the first ling is about latex gloves, it mentions the natrual qualities found in the rubber tree so it fits. second link is to wiki's article on natural rubber and its solvents, it does not mention gastric (stomach) acid.

After being Gold Roger Mk II all this while, Luffy is instead taking time out to be Edward Newgate.
I can't say I like that development. It's not in sync with the entire "The Pirate King is the freest man on the Sea" schtick.

why not? he is just helping his friends from FI, its not like its some kind of bussiness or something like that.
It doesnt contradict at all with the "freest man on the Sea"
LOL @ Caribou being fodder that's defeated off panel. LAWLS @ everybody who thought he'd be important. Oda threw a red herring out there after he learned Shira was an ancient weapon.
The whole time during the conversation with Big Mom I was waiting for Sanji to grab the phone saying he'd make the candy for her assuming she was beautiful and that would lead to them meeting, Sanji insulting her, her wanting to keep him as her candy making slave causing a fight between both crews.
What Luffy did fits his character but telling a yonkou he's making the island his turf is laughable at the moment.
Loved the name drop of what Kidd did. Also like these new character designs of the characters from Big Mom's crew.

Yeah because unkilled off characters suddenly never show up again? I have to admit…didn't expect the quick Caribou doing away with.....but I wouldn't say hes out for the count yet. Its not like the strawhats killed him

I don't know if this was already said, but could Bepo and Pekomz or other anthromorphic animals (besides Chopper) be Minkmen? Or is that unthought of because minks are similar to ferrets and that they aren't labelled as minkmen?
If she is Lola's mom, I predict someone in her crew will say something like this in front of her: "what, some human had a child with you ? GRRRROSSSS !"

At least this gets away from that LUFFY IS ROGERS REINCARNATE theory
I like it….seems like Odas creating an entirely new generation of fighters that will have scattered traits from all the influentials. Makes for a win win set up to me
I dont know where people got the idea. But since when was rubber resistant to acid? ._.
Oh, and I lol'ed at Zoro smile on page 15 :-D

Natural rubber is pretty durable stuff, except against Sulfuric Acid. But stomach acid is not Sulfuric… if it is, Big Mom would make everyone gag when she opened her mouth. Sulfur smells horrible...

caribou's role will be leaking the info he knows about shirahoshi. i'm leaning towards the marines taking his out in the new world and he then telling them what he knows in exchange for them letting him go.

Could've been handled much better without the "Fishman Island is my turf" declaration. Possible scenario: Luffy takes care of the boss (Big Mom) somehow, and leaves behind Jimbe/Shirahoshi/Princes to handle Fishman Island for themselves. Kind of what he's been doing throughout his journey (read: Alabasta, Skypeia and so on).
@Fire Fist:
But stomach acid is not Sulfuric…
The acidic part of stomach acid is mostly Hydrochloric acid, methinks.

I brought up the idea earlier in this thread. I pointed out that invertabrate types like squid and octopus (which the real animals are not fish) are still labeled as fish/merfolk. The name of the fishmen/women and mermaid/men is a generic term that covers all types from actual fish types to the invertabrate types, so maybe the "Minkmen" is a generic term for these antrhromorphic animals that would include Bepo and Pekomz.

I really do hope, and think, that this is the case. When he was on Amazon Lily, Bepo was talking about wanting to see some "female bears" there. Disregarding the possibility of him being a closet furry, this is not really something I'd expect a human with some sort of bear fruit to be saying. His crewmates also refer to him on several occasions as an actual animal. Then there's the matter of him having the same beady eyes as Pekomz.
So now that these two are sorted out, the only character that Oda's dropped the ball on is Pappug.
I think Big Mom have "Tree Tree fruit" (a nature fruit), and the acids you are all talking about are Resin Acids.
Just want to get this clear, the one on the top left is big mom right?

@Chief:
I'm usually too lazy to comment anything and just read the threads around here, but this time one thing really bugged me: the great amount of people saying Luffy is just too weak to face Bib Mum by now.
I honestly believe he is enough strong to beat the crap out her on the stage he is. Come on… He trained for two whole years with the Dark King himself. He did not only learn haki this time, he toughed-up a lot for sure. Ops, my bad: It was not for two years, it was for only 1 and a half year, because Luffy manage to learn all Reylegh planned to teach way faster than he thought (that's Oda telling us: "Luffy's stronger than Reyleigh would even have imagined").
I'm not saying he'll fight her in 15 chapts or so. It's most likely that we'll have a long arc (Alabasta-like), with them facing several Bib Mum's crew and allys and maybe some unrelated forces (supernovas, or ex-level 6 prisioners) until they actually meet LinLin herself. But that does not mean he'll be stronger by then. What will be "stronger" is the New World and Big Mum´s influences build-ups.
And thinking in retrospect, it's pretty similar to the the whole Crocs thing. Luffy had just entered the Grand Line and already made enemies with a Shichibukai. We might have thought he was just too green to make it, but it wasn't. As matter of fact, all he's previous enemies were the ones too weak for him (Kuro, Buggy, Krieg and even Arlong - none of them posed a threat to Luffy). Luffy's first real match was Croc (and then he lost twice and won once… but won). And only later we found out why that was actually possible and not "just because of plot": he spent 10 fucking years trainnig everyday with Sabo and Ace in a hellish jungle/dump! Of course Luffy felt confident since the beggining. He knew his strengh (well… until the world beat the crap out of him in Saboady/ID/Marineford).
The same thing is happenig now: he knows his current strengh (we are the ones who have no idea yet). The difference is that now he's got a lot more experience, fought with the world's best, and trainned with the world's best...Well... what I'm saying - if i'm saying anything at all - is that it's not too soon for them to face a Younkou. We just need to have a well build up arc (luckily, we have Oda to do so).
And as someone already pointed that the problem would not be Luffy beat a Younkou, but the afterwards. I beg to differ. There are a bunch of high level oponents (2 other younkou; all the supernovas - who does not fear the younkou as we seen with Drake and Kidd; old and new Shichibukais; level 6 prisioners; new world pirates; all Marine forces - with somewhat misterious new powerups as said by Jimbe; World Goverment itself; yet-to-be-known oponents...). Sorry to be the one who say this, but One Piece has to end some day...
I like this guy.
Luffy's tough. He'll need to take on some hard-nuts soon or he'll never get OP. It's already been just over 2 years since WB announced the existence of OP on international TV, people actually have Raftel/OP/Whatever in their sights and since then BB's ranked up to Yonkou - a key contender for Pirate King. One day Luffy will have to fight BB, and that won't be too far away on a temporal level - it took about 6 months to conquer 'paradise' right? So it may only take 12-18 months to crack NW - That being the case, Luffy'll have to face a Yonkou sometime soon and I don't think that he'll get a power-up like this again. Of course OP's always been famous for new techniques developed on the road, but surely nothing can compete with 2 years with the Dark King.
Firstly the SH're gonna' hafta' grind the bones of some of Big Mum's crew, and quite a few too - she IS an Emperor, but I suppose this is the price one pays for declaring war against a Yonkou.
Luckily, Luffy has friends in high places. I also think that Smoker and rogue Aokiji could get involved with this shxt. Some Croc shxt right here.
EDIT: On Baron Tamago - he's a Longleg AND walks like a compass. Y'know how Apoo has an extra elbow/forearm, d'ya think that the Longlegs're the opposite of this in that they have no kneecaps?
Doubtful as she is bothered when BM gets loud.
@Al!naJames:
Thank you ^^
Anybody has any clues on how the Lion and the Three-Eye can be related to food-in-fairy tales theme of others?
Don't know if anyone already answered, but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_and_the_Unicorn
They were also in Through the Looking-Glass..
Page 5: Yes, the original script says "Pekoms", so it's not "Bokoms" as we thought previously.
Also, it's "under Mama's name", MS. Even you have to agree that what you have there makes no sense.
Now for a bit of trivia:
Baron Tamago's "soir" can also be spelled as "swirl"; "bon" as "bun"; "Si'l vous Plait" as an abbreviation of "silver plate". Normally, they wouldn't make sense, but the puns do relate in this case.
…So, MS is getting better. That should be it for now. Thank the new translator they have.
Heh, the amount of poor artwork featuring Marimo and Swirly in the backgrounds is hilarious. Normally Oda wouldn't be this sloppy, but I guess he had to rush through the art a bit to stay on schedule. That must mean he enjoyed a lovely Christmas.

But not being able to do these stuff ties you down as well, then he isnt the most free man in the ocean. Being the man with most freedom is doing whatever you want. But when he wants to save the island from big mam. But cant do it to be the man with the most freedom. Than he isnt the man with the most freedom and looses.
