Hiro's biggest problem seems to be execution and planning. Honestly, many of the things he's trying to do could work if he could write better. I mean, this seven year timeskip, as ridiculous and pointless as it was, could have at least been used to develop other characters. In the end, it was pointless.
Lucy's Dad dying COULD be moving if he hadn't jumped from douche dad to gentle/caring dad with hardly any substance in between. Because when I think back on what we've seen of Lucy Daddy, I recall him ordering a guild to kill Fairy Tail and kidnap his own daughter to force her back home. Then I remember him showing up and begging her for money and basically accusing her of not appreciating him. Where exactly is there any room in all of this for empathy for his character. I feel a little for Lucy, but it's still not enough to make this anywhere near an emotional scene.
Fullmetal Lich.
Don't you mean HALF-metal though? :P
I like that guy's posts. Sure, they were recycled running gags, but I found them hilarious. Every week we complain about the shitty things in FT and there's this guy who randomly barges in and says "Lucy's tits = week is made". He reminds me of Beka and his smiling Moria spam.

There can't ever be enough of Moria (or Lucy's tits apparently). But yeah I liked those posts too.. :ninja:

He got humbled by losing all his money and then he had 7 years to worry about his daughter….........
In relation to Lucy it makes sense because even though her father treated her badly she still cared about him hence why she went and fought that other guild by herself because she thought he was in danger.
Rave really isn't as bad as some make it out to be. Not good, but not horrid.
Rave > Fairy Tail in any day of the week, but yeah they both suck.
Rave is generic if anything, and Fairy Tail is more cliche in a bad way.
Rave really isn't as bad as some make it out to be. Not good, but not horrid.
I'd say that's the majority opinion.
I still remember when I read it Rave 1 volume per 3 month many years a go when Rave was still running and it feel so bad and feel the same like reading any Mashima other works.. and it was my friend who buy it. we don't have much money so I'll buy some titles like Naruto, One Piece etc while my friends will buy other title and we will shared. but one think i can tell you is that, it doesn't feel that bad anymore when Rave was finish and marathon it in one go. seriously…

The thing is though, that seven year trump card is a copout. See, Hiro is simply telling us he had seven years to humble himself instead of showing it. When writing, even in manga, you have to show character development. You can't just tell the audience in such a contrived way. Hiro should have had a small arc based around her father instead of just two chapters.
I really liked reading the posts here xD. Fairy Tail huh… It's good to see that the people here aren't as obsessed with it as a lot of other One Piece fans I've run into. I read Fairy Tail for a while and it was all right... but I keep seeing people put it on the same level as One Piece, as if they go hand in hand or something, as if they're remotely similar.
I mean, aside from the fact that there are slight character and plot resemblances, (Lucy - Nami, Guilds - Pirate Crews, Luffy - Natsu... all very poor, less interesting imitations, I must add) One Piece is 100% better planned, with 100% better characterization and story telling. Fairy Tail is just a bunch of random crud thrown together that somehow manages to create something mildly entertaining. Think Erza might be the only original thing about it.
Just glad to see that the world hadn't gone as insane as I thought it had. I was really starting to think the general intelligent public was going to start considering the possibility that Fairy Tail might out do One Piece. Which is absurd.
That being said, I really need to catch up with the chapters... there was a time lapse? THE HELL? Already!? Fairy Tail moves way too fast. The arcs, fights, characters... all rushed to hell. It makes me want to throw up sometimes, yet somehow I still prefer it to Naruto.
I've always considered Erza to be a female Zorro.
Speaking of One Piece, I compared the girls to characters like Stelly in this lovely review I typed out for a review blog I may or may not put together.
Fairy Tail 257: Father's 7 Years or Daddy Must Die
! Ah, Fairy Tail. I will clear this up: I'm actually fond of this series. But that doesn't change the fact that it's, well, a poor excuse for a manga. The last three arcs, while being promising, fell flat with "Deus Ex Mashima" up the wazoo. Then we get a timeskip, presumably because "all the cool kids are doing it". Fresh start for the series? Ha!
! But that's neither here nor there, as I'm here to talk about, well, Chapter 257. The chapter opens with a riveting re-introduction to the plot device Romeo:
No, Mashima, I'm not even going to acknowledge this as a character.
! Yes, that's the entire point of Romeo's existence. To provide cheesy melodrama that gets resolved in 1.5 chapters. To be fair, Romeo doesn't even appear in this chapter…
! The chapter basically picks up where last week's admittedly inoffensive chapter left off:
Lucy: Daddy…
Aunt Figg: DADDY is DEAD.
! On this week's episode, we're supposed to care about a character we don't care about because her daddy (another character we don't care about) has died.
A graphical representation of how much we care.
! Yes, this chapter wants to be a tear jerker.
I get the feeling it succeeded.
! To be fair, this isn't a particularly "bad" chapter, and it has its moments. Natsu does something remotely intelligent. No, Snake, we're not kidding you.
Give him a moment. News like this doesn't come often.
! There are a couple other moments in the chapter, and it's really not too bad, but everything about the chapter just feels contrived. For starters…
! http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110529065825/onepiece/images/thumb/0/01/Stelly_Portrait.png/120px-Stelly_Portrait.png
Oh look. It's Stelly!
! Mashima introduces us to a couple of plot devices that kind of remind me of our good friends in Goa from One Piece. You know the ones. They use the same tone as the nobles, wishing that their father would just die. To be absolutely fair, I'm not going to completely absolve Oda of his sins. The nobles of Goa just felt so forced themselves. But it's important to note that there is one giant fundamental flaw in Fairy Tail's plot devices: Where the hell did these bitches even come from?
! Um, Mashima, I'm not going to accuse you of copying Oda, but DUDE! The nobles of Goa were established douchebags and made sense in context; they made sense to the story. These girls are just random teenagers acting like the nobles of Goa! Nobody else in this town has the same kind of douche-baggery attitude like that! There's no context behind them, no symbolism. They're just PLOT DEVICES.
At least have the dignity to give your plot devices some character, Mashima.
! Why am I complaining so much about this? Because it takes a scene that we're supposed to care about (mind you, we already don't care about it) and shits all over it with no regard to tact or subtlety whatsoever. Had Mashima not thrown in the "I wish my daddy was dead" line, there'd be at least some degree of subtlety or whatnot. Instead, we're treated to pointless, obnoxious melodrama.
! Speaking of pointless melodrama, that's ultimately all this chapter is. I don't give a fuck about Lucy's dad or Lucy or anything. If you wanted me to, at least have the goddamn decency to flesh their relationship out. Stop glazing over the details, Mashima! You can't just season a series with random scenes and call it emotionally gripping. Stop selling the reader so short and actually give us something to INVEST to. We care about characters, not plot devices.
! It's not just Lucy's dad: It's UltearxMeredy, it's Cana and Gildartz, it's Erza and Gerard, it's Edoras, it's Cait Shelter, it's Lisanna. God damn, Mashima, are you TRYING to outdo Square Enix in cheese production?
Fairy Tail makes Final Faggotry XIII look like a Shakespearean classic. This is a problem.
! Finally, in "Deus Ex Mashima" fashion, the rent gag from last chapter becomes a plot point… by closing the plot point. If you're going to introduce a freakin' gag, make it a one-off gag or properly flesh it out into a plot point. This is a perfect example of why Fairy Tail is (excuse my play on words) very fail. There needs to be PAYOFF.
Abed: It's Fairy Tail, Volume 1 on dvd.
Pierce: That’s the meaning of Christmas?
Abed: No, it’s a metaphor. It represents lack of payoff.
! Also, Mashima closes the Twilight Ogre plotline.
No, not those Twilight Ogres.
! Guess when it started? Like, two chapters ago! Guess how it ended? With no payoff! No climactic confrontation, no struggle, no nothing. Just Erza, Mirajane, and Makarov going and curbstomping things, proving that the rest of the guild are fucking pussies. Didn't Twilight Ogre LOAN FT money in the first place? Umm… wow. I fucking hate you, Fairy Tail. I fucking hate you, Fairy Tail. (Yes, those were two different sentences.)
! Kitsune's Verdict: 5.5/10 (for a Fairy Tail chapter)
Rave > Fairy Tail in any day of the week, but yeah they both suck.
Rave is good ol' B movie popcorn bad

We actually saw him down in the dumps and him coming to Lucy begging her for money( if we go by how hes shown in the flashbacks that Lucy had this would have to be pretty hard for that person to stomach). After that that point he went off to a Merchant guild and Lucy got worried about him which is how she ended up defeating a dark guild herself in an attempt to protect him.
Granted all of this was a short arc like this one but its not like he didn't plant the seeds for her father and were just jumping from him being rich and not caring to him being rich and caring all of a sudden.

This is the most perfect way to describe Rave ever.
Hiro Mashima presents Plan 9 from Oracion Seis

Why didn't Mashima just make like 2-3 chapters after the time skip, showing him trying to be successful again, while hearing in the process that Lucy and her friends disappeared? Showing how he actually handled the situation, maybe even make us relate with the characters situation, but all this is just hollow, completely soulless. It boils down to other problems of Mashima, like him just not wanting to take his time to really introduce stuff and actually try to put some life and thought into it. He's like the opposite of Kubo, who is insanely slow, while this guy keeps on occasionally releasing two chapters a week, more pages than usual. It's like someone is constantly wiggling his keys before my eyes and going "oh, oh, look at the keys, look at them!", constantly throwing more half-assed concepts at me.
Another issue is just how poorly the time skip was handled. You can argue about how much it really was needed (which we already did and I do not wish to repeat) but the execution of it was just lackluster. Straight back to Fairy Tail and the lost members, not even like spending at least 5 chapters do introduce some things, maybe show a little more of how the guild survived all these years instead, just some proper world building would be appreciated.
Worse timeskip ever?
This is the most perfect way to describe Rave ever.
I've only read about 4-5 volumes of Rave… but yeah I'd say I agree. I tended to find it pretty amusing. Even if that wasn't always intentional. I'm not saying it's good or anything but I really don't get why some people find it so atrocious. Though I should probably read more of it before I really pass judgement.

Worse timeskip ever?
Thousand Lion-chan would say yes.
… And I can't really argue with him.
Read Rave before but felt so amauterish that i kinda forgot about it.
Let's just conclude that Rave was mediocre in a sort of endearing way, but ultimately not worth reading.
Wow you guys must really be bored if you had to go to RAVE for bashing. Surprised you didn't talk about Monster Soul.
Well no one is really bashing Rave, just saying that it was sort of Meh.
rave was meh but it had it's moments
New Chapter is out!
Lol, at first I thought the dark-haired guy would be Zeref…Idk whether I like "new" dragon-slayers with the same element.
Finally we have a new guildmaster! (for real this time)
in before they join Fairy Tail .
^A guild with only 5 members? Sounds like a plan.
7 years of silence. Officially the timeskip is useless. Nothing to see here everyone, move on.
Please read carefully. It says "Anything but a silent seven years in the magic world".
More Dragonslayers?Really?Isnt there any other powerfull type of magic? And where the hell are thoose dragons coming from?
Also we get a WTF is under the guild type of plot? Its been done like 43084890438 times before nothing new
The chapter was okay, poor Macao is going to lose is position.
That was actually kind of interesting.
I wonder why so many dragon slayers have exceed
Coincidence? It seems like those 2 looked up to natsu and gajeel and because they have exceed maybe they sought exceeds themselves. Also what dragon slayers are they? The white one seemed like iron like gajeel but that would be pointless having the same element. Maybe that arrow was made of wood? or he has a poor diet
That colorspread is all kinds of cool
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Double Dragon?
Lol. I see a connection
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Thank the gods the main villain hasn't done anything in these seven years.
So…what's so interesting about new dragonslayers now? We have a real dragon bringing the apocalypse. Also, Natsu has already beaten a real dragonslayer, two fake ones, and a GOD slayers which I imagine should be a step above dragonslayers. It feels like the timing for this announcement is a little off.
Cats and dragonslayers.
Godslayer isn't related to dragon slayer magic, it was just a boast.. The surprise "dragon slayer" of last arc was the black dragon.
Hah, I knew that Makarov wasn't really going to give Macao the position, but instead give it to Gildarts. I wonder what the secret beneath the guild hall is… since Fairy Law is Offense, Fairy Glitter was support (supposedly, since Kana never got the spell off as she lacked the necessary magic power to cast it), and Fairy Sphere is a Defensive spell, Lumine Etole is hopefully something completely different. I knew Doranbolt and Lahal would make the magic council, and it seems Org still isn't the leader, which means Grand Doma is still around (probably). The Shadow and Light Dragonslayers look cool, and looks like they can hold their own in a fight. Also nice to hear that Tartarus hasn't been forgotten about, but it seems that Raven Tail hasn't become anything special in the last seven years, as they weren't even mentioned. Ivan still seems to be bidding his time...
So, yeah, good chapter. Looks like next chapter we'll get to see Grandine again, so it'll be a Wendy-focused chapter.
God Slayer was atheist magic.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Godslayer was just Zancrow being arrogant. He basically had a Lost Fire Magic. That's about it. Black Flame Magic. Doesn't matter, since Zeref killed him and Hades. The fact that Org still mentions Grimoire Heart is a good indication that either Kain Hikaru (less likely) or Rustyrose (more likely) has taken over control of the guild. Based on the information that Bisca and Alzack had for Gray, it seems Meredy and Ultear are doing their own thing now, and Azuma is part of the Tenrou Tree now.
Honestly, I have very little interest in what lies ahead simply because the two new characters as bishies.
So they took a whoping 0.5 seconds to design. And their character will be just as well constructed.
Macao was too weak to be guild master.
I didn't really mind that that much. The new villain guild are going to be former Fairy Tail fanboys, I guess. The promise of learning more about the dragons is good, I suppose. It's a stretch, but if the series can focus on its myth arcs for a while and not going all over the place like it has been in recent arcs, perhaps it can recover a bit.
Ok I liked this chapter. The cover was awesome, first of all. And now we're finally learning more about the other guilds and stuff. Plus the Gildarts/Makarov scene.
I'm confused…was this a mistranslation? Cause now it sounds like Luvia is going to have a grudge against Gildarts for causing Gray to notice him lol.
!
Other than that oddness. The chapter wasn't too bad. It definitely piqued my interest on what's going on, with the room, the dragon slayers, more cats, why one pretends to be a frog…
That must have been a typo that they later fixed, for the version on Mangastream itself says ''she''.
I see that Natsu, Gray, and Erza have new ''standard'' outfits now, but why does Natsu's tunic only have one sleeve…?
Maybe the two Dragon Slayers are lacrima slayers?
Also to answer someone's question about why Dragonslayer magic is revered, it should be the most powerful form of magic. (See Edolas Arc [sorry]).
Gildarts being guild master is probably a response to the good reaction he has from the fans, although I wonder what this means will happen to Makarov (and for that matter, where's Laxus?)
Not really that interesting a chapter, but it's a chapter that FT needs more of. More setting up, transition chapters. Although I love how quickly FT progresses, because I always just want to get to the end, the truth is Mashima needs to stop rushing.
That was alright. It was pretty obvious that at some point Gildarts was going to become the guild master, so no surprises there. Those two new dragon slayer guys look too bishi-ish for my liking though.
