First, Shift, thanks for rescuing my post. This debate has kept me going despite my usual acquiescence. And here I go…
@Shift:
Didn't you say Jinbe needs more time to interact with everyone? Whatever your point, Jinbe's had as much time with Zoro and Usopp as Chopper did (and here I'm addressing you complaint about "not enough time with the crew" further down).
Yep, because they've partied with him too, apparently. Joking aside, Chopper's issue was identity. He saw himself as unwanted when everyone else in the crew saw otherwise. Chopper needed more time with people who care, and their adventures together definitely count. You can't compare his case to Jinbe's.
Which is clearly not happening in this silly li'l scuffle, amirite?
Don't see what surprise has to do with anything. Everyone was wigging out both times Brook agreed to join, even after that battle.
It is happening here actually, and yes, Jinbe planned out this scuffle. It's almost like a stage performance. I too was delighted to see how well Jinbe fits into the group in that last panel of ch 633. Now if only he could do something else besides fighting general fodder… well, Z & S are competing for the most knockouts, so he'll have limited options, not that he won't be able to bring out something amazing.
The second time when Brook formally joined, I saw it more as, they were shocked that there wasn't any further discussion between captain and recruit than "Can I join?" "Sure." If it were me, It'd be pretty expected, based on their first encounter, but it adds to the comic effect.
Jinbe's done a lot more that strangling, like, you know, formulating the whole freakin' plan of action. And plenty of times Luffy hasn't referred to anyone as the magical word "nakama" until just before they joined, and he's called people that who didn't end up joining but are still close like Vivi. You think it can't change from one term to another or something? Again, I'll remind you they had just finished a big disagreement moments before; I don't think he even called Usopp his "nakama" after theirs, so Jinbe got off lucky.
Both terms in general are interchanged easily, but in this story, there is some distinguishing, and using the term "nakama" usually means a closer relationship than a regular friend. Of course they saw Vivi as more than a regular friend. (Bon Clay was no regular friend, yet he only saw his relationship with Luffy as friends, not as crewmates.) Before this battle, the crew saw Jinbe more than an ally as well, but in a less trusting way. This battle will help solidify bonds, but I can't guarantee NN.
Luffy vs Usopp is far from similar to Luffy vs Jinbe… especially that the latter was interrupted. Neither side was heartbroken afterward, either.
And the argument could be made that Jinbe's experiences have also been pretty limited to serving the causes of other people. Tiger, Otohime, Whitebeard, the WG, Ace to an extent; he's been one of the most selfless individuals in the story, despite his objections that he's not a people person. Many of us are waiting to see if he gets his own personal dream to follow, one that will give him cause to travel with the Straw Hats and live a bit more freely.
Yes, of course, and I'm sure Luffy isn't too stupid to understand that. But would it matter as much to him when he's not directly involved in it? My point is, and I'll repeat however many times, how do Luffy and crew see Jinbe? The focus is present. Why else would Luffy sleep through long flashbacks? Whatever dream Jinbe is revealed to have will definitely involve the tension between races, but aside from that, it's too vague as of now, so we'll wait.
Ugh, I am half-dead now.
