What I am really looking up to is the meeting between Leif (Did I got it right?) and Thorfinn.
I feel so bad about the old man, he is such a nice guy D:
Vinland Saga
-
-
I'm looking forward to the day Thorfinn starts talking again. He is in the process of rebuilding his personality and right now he is influenced as easy as a child. I think Arneis philosophy will find a place in the new Thorfinn. Among others of course.
-
I've waited so long to start reading this manga. Bought the first volume in german and read the rest in one day. This is an amazing manga and now i've to suffer the monthly scans.
! I'm feeling sorry for the 102 elite soldiers, they're probably going to get slaughtered by Thorfinn, Snake, Thorgil and Ketil
-
Yeah, I stared buying those too. I'm very pleased with the quality so far. Well they do seem to throw in an accent here or there, which i always find odd, but that aside the German version is buyable. The books are also in a bigger format than One Piece or FMA are. Does anyone know if its like that in Japan too?
-
After Chapter 82 of Kongoh Bancho (thanks to Silverblade), we also have Chapter 82 of Vinland Saga.
-
As inspiring and complete this change in Thorfinn seems it sucks he won't even pick up arms to protect peace and freedom. Miss his badass days of revenge filled wanton killing. Of course I feel these hopes are a complete dream and seem unrealistic that he'd manage to succeed not fighting for and unintentionally/accidentally killing to protect his dream. So I'm assuming he won't get his happy ending.
-
I like it, they're planting more seeds for Thorfinn to hop on a ship and find Vinland, his promised land.
-

Oh man he won't die will he ?
-
I really don't see this ending well for Arneis…
-
To me Einar is in danger more than anyone out there.
And he's a good guy. -
Just got caught up with this series. This current arc seems promising. I'd like to see where it goes.
-
To me Einar is in danger more than anyone out there.
And he's a good guy. He's in a lot more danger, but part of me can't help but hope that by the end of the arc he'll either become a permanent traveling companion or run off with Arneis. Wishful thinking, but I can dream. Arneis on the other hand I just get this feeling about, like things could and are going to get much MUCH worse very quickly.
-
Is the next chapter out yet?
-
I still wish sometimes that Thorfinn was the badass young plunderer we used to know…
-
Oh god spare this thread the "good old gore gutts" arguments.
-
Ahhh nice, the wait was just long enought for me to really enjoy seeing the fusion of the old and new Thorfinn. Fighting barehanded like his father did
-

to be fair the epic fights were part of what made this manga great, not that im not enjoy the path its tacking but this chapter was one of the best in a long time, due mainly to the fact thorfinn getting back into action, \as much as i enjoyed it I don't want the old blood thirsty thorfinn but i dont wan a completly peacfull one either i think we need a middle ground

I feel the same way about it to say the least, the action is what hooked me on the manga before anything.
It's just that kind of post can easily lead to a wave of people complaining about how the manga is not what it was…etc -

[hide]Well that was sad.[/hide]

I am still wondering where Thorfinn´s development will go. He turned from a dangerous kid filled with vengeance to a pacifist who tries to improve other people´s lives but i can not see where the story can go from here. It could be that Arneis is raped and killed by the guys who just saw her, that would probably turn Thorfinn to his old ways.
-

Well i won't go as far as thinking of Thorfinn turning to that full of anger child again (since he really tries hard to change to the better), but then again yeah Arneis might create that chain reaction if anything happens to her.
Einar will take action and then it's either flee or die, the latter will have its bad consequences. Also there's still Canute.
-
Depressing ending is depressing. I was so caught up in Thorfinn fighting and his new outlook on life I didn't even bother to think about the obvious tragic ending this arc was heading towards.
Really like Snake's character now. Almost thought he was gonna get his neck snapped.

I highly doubt that's gonna happen with her being pregnant with her master's child. All those guys are Snake's men I believe. At best they'll slaughter Gardar's corpse in anger. No way they rape Arneis.

Canute is going to invade Ketil's farm with his soldiers and put it to flame, and you can't see what possibly could turn Thorfinn back to his old ways and escape in search of Vinland? Dude, you need to reread a few of the most recent chapters.
-
I actually wasn't expecting him to die. Not before his chapter, I mean. Snake was awesome, made Arneis shut up with his reasoning.

Ah shit, i totally forgot that. The thing is, most recent chapters is still a few months back so you can easily forget certain parts
-
Good news, although Germany was bit faster this time (just bought volume 3 in my local story recently).
-
Yeah I've had it for a while too. Those volumes have a really nice feel to them ^^
And they are bigger than One Piece too. -
Here in France ten volumes are already available :)

Even then, I dont think he'll actually kill anybody. Rather incapacitate them like Thors did with the pirates + Askeladd.
Atleast I hope he doesn't kill anybody, I feel like the whole slavery arc would be pointless if he went back to his old ways of killing. -
Chapter 87 is up on mangareaders, I feel like this story is moving at such a slow pace, oh well, can't be helped.
Kind of not digging Thorfinn's new outlook on morality and human nature either.
! "There can be no such thing as a good person that hurts others."
If I have to fight to protect someone, or reach a goal that is important to me, then so be it, I'll just have to be a bad person, because some people ain't trying to hear talk no jutsu. Especially during this time in history.

Don´t like his 180 degrees turn, either, it gets quite annoying
-
Am I the only one who does like Thorfinns new outlook on morality and human nature?
Its freaking great, he's finally learning what Thors tried to explain to him. -

Thorfinn would have been a terrible character if he stayed the way he was. The story's progressed and the boy grew into a man, I really don't see anything to complain about.
-
it's not the fact that I think him changing is a bad thing, I just think the way he is going about it seems to be a bit extreme.
Particularly this quote.
"There can be no such thing as a good person that hurts others."
I don't know if that's just a statement of his, or if his actual goal is to never harm others no matter what.
Even though he broke the promise to himself, he is beating himself up over using psychical force to defend Gardar. He claims it resulted in Gardar's death, but if he stood by and did nothing, Gardar still would have died the same, just quicker.
-
I like his change too. It will probably make all future conflicts very interesting.
I was hoping the manga-ka wouldn't puss out and use a "I can still kill people if I'm protecting something" excuse. -
I guess sooner or later Thorfinn will fight like his dad did in chapter 12, it would be a perfect solution for his problems. But it's not going to happen in the next chapters, therefore i'm hoping that we get a little slaughtering with Snake, Thorfinn and co, especially when Thorfinn sees Floki.
-

Thorfinn would have been a terrible character if he stayed the way he was. The story's progressed and the boy grew into a man, I really don't see anything to complain about.
I never said that him changing is a bad thing. Of course he had to mature from the wild, reckless boy who only lives for revenge but his new outlook on things is almost as bad as before. He has become afraid of hurting others not only because he deeply cares for the others but because he is afraid to dirty his own hands because it could lead him to be like he was before, namely violent. This keeps him from protecting those who he cares about (his slave friend or Arneis for example). That also would be ok if he had been alright with others getting hurt and him remaining "pure" but he obviously regrets it. So in the end, he did not mature into a man like you said but only the stubbornness which was his most obvious feature was replaced with doubt about humanity and their relation + interaction. To grow into a man he has to shed those doubts and has to gain a clew view on how to act, so that he can be strong without being doubtful.
-
He is trying to find the path of a true warrior. And he don't know what to do to reach this goal. It makes sense to me that he will try the oposite of what he was doing till now.
I see a lot of parallels between Thorfinn and Takezo (Vagabond)

I see a lot of parallels between Thorfinn and Takezo (Vagabond)
He is not trying to find the true warrior´s way, he is trying to find a way to resolve everything without violence which is in itself a good thing of course but his motivation behind it is rather questionable, to say the least. Takezo on the other hand is trying to achieve or rather obtain a higher spirituality in which his swordsmanship transcends to more than violence. He is not afraid of it, it is rather unwanted and unnecessary. Both are going through an inner struggle, that much is correct, but what they are going through is different.
-
I consider it the second stage of a huge 3 stage character growth. He initially was a wild animal with no remorse. Now he is a pacifist in a world of war. The final stage is when he stops going into extremes all the time and accepts that conflict is an inherent part of human interaction and that although it is best to avoid conflict, there are times when doing that will result in more horrible situations (death or slavery of loved ones). Basically, untill Canute doesn't arrive and starts screwing with everybody or untill he sees master going all crazy on Aernis and he notices that it's either do or she dies, Thorfin will not react.
-

I was hoping the manga-ka wouldn't puss out and use a "I can still kill people if I'm protecting something" excuse.Same here, that would be extremely unfortunate.
I'm hoping they dont pull a Trigun. -
Chapter 88 http://www.mangareader.net/vinland-saga/88
! Ketil goes nuts, the next chapters are going to be awesome.
-
! Poor Arneis, she got the beating of her life. At least Ketil is now motivated to defend everything that belongs him, including the farm, so there definitely should be a confrontation with the king, i wonder what Thorfinn´s role will be though.
-
I just hope the events won't delay Leif's encouter with Thorfinn again.
-
Some comments on Ketil's peculiar sword.
The engravings aren't Runic letters as we know it. the top lines of each letter
isn't angled like runes are, wonder if it is a artist mistake or what? There is
no V F H and T like that in runic alphabet. The engravings do in fact refer to a rare type of sword that was forged in the
viking era. They were way way far ahead of their time, and were much more
durable than most swords you would be able to find in that era. They were forged
in a way that left them almost free of impurities, something which granted
greater strength and flexibility, which most swords didn't have at the time. -
I just hope the events won't delay Leif's encouter with Thorfinn again.
Same here. Im super stoked to see the dialogue that will take place between them.
The next few chapters are gonna be so good.
-
New chapter was pretty holy shit-worthy.
