@JERK:
Well you pretty much just answered your own question there lol.
And that's your problem right there.
I don't really think it's fair for me to say if HxH is better than YYH or not, since I've only read up to chapter 83 of the manga. But from what I can tell HxH is probably better, which would make sense given how Togashi made it afterwards, when he had refined his writing skills. One thing I don't like however is that Kurapika and Leorio haven't appeared in 100 chapters from what I can tell. Apparently they aren't main characters which I find a bit sad, because I liked them. I'm glad Robby pointed out how good of a character Leorio is, I find him to be underrated. I'm rooting for him to master Nen when they finally get out of the Ants arc.
May I just ask is the Ants arc good? Because I've heard most people liked it, but I'm not particularly intrigued by the concept. I think the main problem people have with it, is that it's gone on for too long (100 or so chapters and 5 or so years). But is the actual arc good? Because quite a few people said it was their 2nd favorite arc after York Shin but there were some naysayers.
Edit: As of May 2nd 2011, I'd have to say Hunter x Hunter is better than Yu Yu Hakusho.
BTW Jerk Disease, I remember you posted that you were going to read FMA, one of my favorite manga. Apparently you liked it, what tier would you place it on? Tier 4 I bet. You made a tier ranking that went from 1 to 10. At what point on that tier ranking would a manga have to be in order to be called good?
Well I guess for me YYH and RuroKen are guilty pleasures. I enjoy the action, I find the characters likeable even if they aren't the most interesting and overall they're enjoyable. But there are definitely better Shonen.
My list (just for manga that comes to mind immediately):
Awesomesauce: FMA (my first great love), OP, Berserk, Mushishi, Toriko so far
Eh, quality varies: Naruto, YYH
Woooow this is bad: BLEACH, Prince of Tennis
For me the tier system is very simple. I should really read more of the classic stuff so that my tiers will multiply and become more nuanced.

I hate to say this, but read more manga. Unless you're new in which case it's okay. I'm still relatively new to the vast world of manga, I've only just started reading really good series (mostly Shonen right now, because I like Shonen).
I do agree that OP, FMA and Berserk are awesome though. Those are my top 3 at this point in time.
@Kareem:
May I just ask is the Ants arc good?
The ant arc is great. Its only problem, is, yeah, the hiatuses, and that its like 3 chapters away from being done. If it had run straight through over the course of 2 years everyone would love it. Every single time it comes off hiatus its just full of WTF moments, "Oh my god I can't believe he just did that!" and "oh shit, what now?". Plus, I have no idea how its actually going to end, what the heroes will do next, or where the series goes from here.
Some surface comparisons are often lobbied about it being like the Cell saga in Dragonball, which is probably fair… But its done in a far more interesting way, I think. With intriguing twists and turns and an actually really likeable and interesting main villain and minions. My impression the entire time going through it was "Yeah, this is the Cell saga done RIGHT"... and I love Dragonball.
Just make sure when you read it you use the trade illustrations, not the weekly.
Prince of Tennis
Prince of Tennis is fun when you realize its sort of an embodiment of shonen tropes… applied to Tennis. There's not a whole lot to it, but its fun for what it is.
Kenshin is much the same. Its fine if its one of your first manga series, but there's plenty of stuff that does the genre way better and tops it in pretty much every way. Lone Wolf and Cub in particular.

I ranked FMA in the list I made earlier. Updated. So you can see.
The Ant Arc I actually like alot, problem is the final fight (which is still unfolding as we speak lol) is INSANE, I don't mean the plot, characters, or even anything in-universe, but the way it is told. Togashi went insane with overanalysis of all the little details by every character in every situation. It's plum fucking crazy. I actually got a headache when I reread it all in one sitting.
@Kareem - I've given Kenshin an honest chance and don't understand how anyone can think it's anything amazing (I know this isn't exactly what you said, but you're post is what reminded me). Both times I tried to read it it was just so bland - I really couldn't get interested in anything that was going on. There are just some series that basically do what Kenshin was doing, just way better.
@RobbyBevard:
I don't remember Hiei having any real actual goal, backstory, or motivation beyond "I wanna be strong, just cause." Kurapika has an actual mission to achieve that he's making visible progress in, and sacrificing his life and happiness for. Plus, he's hanging out with crazy mobsters!
Not to mention with how well thought out the Nen system is, his entire battle style is far more intriguing than Hiei's "I'm gonna use this random attack that's totally a dragon. Cause its cool looking."
Yeah, all the above. Plus the world building is better too.
Its just better in pretty much every way. If you stopped right in the middle of the York Shin arc, well… thats when the series really hits its stride. The Nen system alone puts it ahead of most other shonen with how well thought out, balanced, versatile, and developed it is.
You can't even really lob the lengthy hiatuses against it, since Togashi completey rushed and BSed the ending to YYH in a single chapter in the middle of an arc because he was just done with it. (The anime fixed it... a little.)
I didn't stop because it was bad, in fact I liked it quite a bit from where I was, I just decided I wanted to get up to date with Berserk and Negima, because I wanted to finish those series. I'll get back to it, don't worry. I was just thinking it wasn't as good as One Piece, Berserk or Negima and people told me it was.
Then again I've read all of One Piece, about 270 chapters of Berserk and 230 or 240 chapters of Negima. And 80 chapters of HxH.
Yeah, sorry I shouldn't compare HxH to other excellent series when I've read the minority of it. Don't worry I'll read more. It's just from now on I want to read a series from start to finish and not be reading multiple series at once.
I think my biggest problem with the series is the artwork. And yes, I know Togashi doesn't use assistants which is why the art isn't very good, but it still kind of bothers me. Some people have said that Togashi should just hire assistants, since his series is popular so he could get assistants easily, which would mean less hiatuses.
When do you predict HxH will end? As in what chapter? I'm not talking about year since we have no idea when the series will ever come back, I mean for people who are up to date with the series, what's the most likely end? Will it last 400 chapters? 500 chapters? Longer? Or is it going to end really soon?
From what I can gather, it's doubtful the series will end soon (in terms of chapters not just time insert hiatus joke here)
At this point, I don't think anyone could give you an answer to how many more chapters there are likely to be. Like, not even close.
Hunter X Hunter has the balls to do what few other shounen will do.
Take its time.
For this, it will ALWAYS be one of my favorite shounen manga.

I….think going about a year without a single chapter is more than taking your time unless he's really planning everything in detail from now to at least the end of his arc.
I want to hear critics about Ghost in the Shell before I read it.
@HiroVoid:

Honestly? I ain't even mad.
It's not like there aren't other things to read in the meantime.
If you can wait for Berserk, you can wait for HxH.
Does anybody remember where the interview where Togashi explained his reasons for wanting to end YuYu is? In it, he talked about his issues with how mangaka are required to have absolutely no lives and labor and labor and fight tooth and nail for their daily bread. Kewl translated some of it. Reading it, I could kind of sympathize with him. Not completely, but a bit.
I mean maybe he's on the opposite end of the spectrum of the insane hardworkers like the Tezukas and the Odas (who goes home to his family once a year). But I can wait for Togashi, because I like stories where the minutiae matters, death and loss are ever present and have gravitas, and battles are more complex than who can benchpress the biggest mountain. I like stories where what the villain is thinking matters, and that's why stuff like HxH and JoJo appeal to me unlike anything else.
How do you resolve a conflict where the enemies are legitimately strong and fast enough to kill you in a fraction of a second? What kind of circumstances are necessary to survive and increase your odds in that sort of certain suicide mission situation? How can you exploit your enemies personality, and thought-patterns, and misconceptions to give you that flickering moment of a chance to win? How can your abilities, tailor made to do one thing but do it extremely well, be used to creatively and believably give you an edge?
That's the shit I wanna read. I want THAT on my reading list.
I don't even care that that means they're sometimes verbose and maybe even too neurotically detail oriented. It's a sign that the writing is given much care, the characters are given much attention, and plausibility, even within the context of flying ki beams and psychic powers, matters. There's a WORLD of difference between stuff like HxH and stuff like Air Gear because of it.
Oh!Great tries to write significance into everything. But Togashi doesn't write something unless it has significance.
I can give him a bit of a pass because of it.
Honestly? I ain't even mad.

BULLSHIT
Goddamn, I wouldn't even say that about Oda,
Why the hell do you get so much like fucking Ao Kiji does over Slam Dunk with HxH. It's like you're it's creepy stalker.
SHE SHOWERS EVERY DAY, I KNOW THIS, AND SHE USES THIS EXACT BRAND OF SHAMPOO, FLAWLESSLY WASHING EVERY INCH, AND THEN FLOSSING BETWEEN EVERY TOOTH FIVE TIME, I HAVE SOME Of THE DSCARDED FLOSS HERE, LOOK HOW HER PLAQUE SHIMMERS IN THE SUNLIGHT

@THE:
I want to hear critics about Ghost in the Shell before I read it.
Have you read anything else by Shirow?
It's exactly like that.
Insane elaborate art that looks fantastic, crazy ammounts of talking and technobabble and philosophizing, plenty of military gear and politics. Except rather than be technobabbly, its actually heavily researched and thought out plausible sci-fi based around practicality and mecha and the kind of effect that would have on the human race and its politics and police force, and if thats you're thing, you'll love it. (Given your tastes Sea, I think you'd probably like it a lot.)
Should also check out the artbooks, Intron Depot 1, and Intron Depot 2: Blades.Just the first two Intron Depots though. The third was was weak and the fourth was incredibly bad.
Personally, I was incredibly bored by Ghost in the Shell. (The mangas, the movies, and the tv series, despite the incredibl production values on all of them.) And Appleseed bored me too. Its very very easy to see though why it would be amazing for the right audience though, all the work put into it is pretty clear and the visuals are fantastic.
I actually really enjoyed Dominion: Tank Police, it was wacky and fun and wasn't trying to be anywhere near as serious a work, but it also gets a pass as one of my first exposures to anime and manga.

Did I? Find it. I remember you going off on somebody, but I don't think it was me. You can probably seriously embarrass me anyway, but have that factual aid, if you want.
Don't misunderstand. My liking that writing style is more a function of liking that writing style than it is of me holding it up as the pinnacle of its genre. I enjoy just as much subtle manga that show but don't tell, having you infer from images rather than words. Blade of the Immortal for example is one of my all time favorites. Berserk is not writing lite, but it's a better balanced example between the two of an equilibrium between exposition and subtlety. I like the writing in all three, but don't worry: I assure you I am allowed to.
Maybe it'd be more accurate to say that I like the sum of its parts - I like HxH's writing in the context of the world because it suggests that such minutiae is important. Hunter x Hunter has never not been a world of minutiae, so I can accept page long excursions into the details. Could it be done another way? Yes. Do I like it this way anyway? Yes. I like the madness of that level of detail - the citations in Shirow's work elicit the same response. It's different from the overdescription of Air Gear, because there itisn'tevenforafuck. HxH has it because all that shit matters: the reason that rankles you so much is because suddenly there's SO MUCH of it and it isn't subtle at all. Me? I'm cool with that.

I wouldn't say it about Oda either. If we're mashing fists furiously on the keyboard, demanding the goddamn letter of the law, I wouldn't say it about Togashi either. It's ploce. It's figure of speech.
It's also hyperbole: you're pretty familiar with it.
@JERK:
Oh you give him a pass alright. Coming on a little strong actually.
So, what, you don't seem to have any issues with the characterization or direction otherwise. It's the ant arc and its overwrought writing you have an issue with? And Togashi's attitude?
Alright. Well why dick around? Just get right to it then.

Think of a slice of life with adults and politics within a science fiction setting. It's amazingly built. Atleast to me. I quite enjoyed it, mainly for the interactions.
Though I can't speak for the manga… I never read it.
Still no.
Seriously, someone tell me what was so much better about YYH than HxH. Try naming a single thing that YYH did better than HxH.
And no update schedule jokes.
Better story, fights, characters, funnier, better plot. Honestly I can't think of why you guys like HxH so much but then I remember it's AP and yall opinions leave a lot to be desired. Also the writter didn't continue to go on hiatus while making YYH. That a lone should tell you something. Also the emotion was a lot better in YYH. But whatever ppl going to like what they like.
You guys are funny it'd be like Akira Toriyma making a new series and the main character fights with a pogo stick and you guys clamoring about how much superior it is to DBZ. sigh only on AP.
Hunter X Hunter has the balls to do what few other shounen will do.

Berserk takes its time and gets perfect scores.
HxH procrastinates and then oversleeps on the due date.

No, he just ended it abruptly in the middle of an arc with no real payoff or resolution in the course of one chapter and everything happened off camera and was wrapped up with a couple text bubbles.
@JERK:
Berserk comes more frequently and is obviously labored on.
And this is the reason I don't care about waiting for Berserk. When Berserk comes out, the artwork is completely beautiful and detailed. Hunter x Hunter is just a regular chapter with regular artwork. I love the series, but I don't see any reason why he couldn't think up what he wants to do in a year's time.
@RobbyBevard:
No, he just ended it abruptly in the middle of an arc with no real payoff or resolution in the course of one chapter and everything happened off camera and was wrapped up with a couple text bubbles.
I'd prefer that to the hiatus game he's playing with HxH. Or another DBZ fiasco.
Berserk takes its time and gets perfect scores.
HxH procrastinates and then oversleeps on the due date.
Berserk is also not a shonen.
Better story, … better plot.
Hahahah no.
I actually liked YYH, but it's really the predesor to Bleach by this aspect. Essentially, the first arc notwithstanding, there are only two types of arcs you see in YYH, training arcs that are followed by tournament arcs.
fights,
YYH's fights after the first tournament saga are literally nothing but outpowering your enemies with little to no thought involved.
HxH seldom, if ever, degraded to this. HxH's fight's are incredibly intelligent. Very reminiscent of Jojo.
I mean, that was the entire point of the fight between Knuckle and Gon. You can't outpower your enemy (or rather, you couldn't get a chance to) so you had to get creative.
Honestly I can't think of why you guys like HxH so much but then I remember it's AP and yall opinions leave a lot to be desired.
Yes do tell us about how and why Zoro would backstab Mihawk.
Also the writter didn't continue to go on hiatus while making YYH. That a lone should tell you something.

No really, the hell are you trying to say?
@AlmostLegendary:

Are you talking about tone of story? Because HxH easily beats YYH in this aspect, like by the very first arc.

How can you expect him to be able to fight on level with the newer bad guys if he doesn't get stronger?

I don't see how that's a degrade. If you're strong you win. I can list about 2000 thousands quotes about how the strong win etc etc etc. When you're weak you'll have to come up with a way in order to try and defeat your opponent.
What the fuck does this mean
No really, the hell are you trying to say?
Take it how you want too you guys seem to do that with my post and run with it anyways.
What the fuck does this mean
Are you talking about tone of story? Because HxH easily beats YYH in this aspect, like by the very first arc.
No not tone of story emotion of the characters. Like when Yusuke's dead or Genkai's death. Or when they're fighting the 4 saint beast and hiei is fighting the Ice guy. Things of that nature.
! @AlmostLegendary:
! > How can you expect him to be able to fight on level with the newer bad guys if he doesn't get stronger?
! You seriously have no idea how idea how bad this is from a writing standpoint do you? It's dull. I'm not saying you can't have training arcs or tournament arcs (though as an aside I feel tournaments are overdone and seldom good anymore) but YYH is literally training arc followed by tournament arc.
! Besides power is not the only thing that makes for an interesting fight. Which brings me to my next point.
! @AlmostLegendary:
! > I don't see how that's a degrade. If you're strong you win. I can list about 2000 thousands quotes about how the strong win etc etc etc. When you're weak you'll have to come up with a way in order to try and defeat your opponent.
! So you're basically saying that strategy never matters in a fight even if the opponent is weaker than you. Lovely.
! Here's the thing, more often than not, having fights that you simply outpower your opponent is very very boring. Nearly every fight in YYH is simply this. Now as I said, I'm not saying that I disliked every fight in YYH. It's just substance with no style. Aka boring.
! Hunter x Hunter takes the Jojo route in having well thought out fights that don't just amount to having your ki penis be larger than the opponent's ki penis. I'll say it again, HxH seldom if ever degrades to what YYH ever amounted to.
! Hell the entire Greed Island arc's motif was that you couldn't just outpower your opponent. You needed to use some strategy with the cards.
! @AlmostLegendary:
! > Take it how you want too you guys seem to do that with my post and run with it anyways.
! Oh so you can't be arsed to explain your own points. Fantastic.
! @AlmostLegendary:
! > No not tone of story emotion of the characters. Like when Yusuke's dead or Genkai's death. Or when they're fighting the 4 saint beast and hiei is fighting the Ice guy. Things of that nature.
! Gon finding out Jin is dead.
Killua finding out his brother is in the hunter exam.
Kurapika holding the jar of his family's eyes.
Leorio and Kurapika holding back from attempting to kill Hanzo for breaking Gon's arm.
! I can keep going.
! ANY of these moments were far better from an emotional standpoint than YYH.
Even YuYuHakusho itself had an arc right after Toguro where the entire point was "Strength isn't everything, and a good trick or strategy can destroy a much stronger oppoent. Look at these ordinary guys and their crazy tricks easily stomping Yuuske."
Of course after it made that point, it then proceeded to continue with the brute strength approach, right down to Yuuske getting a Super Saiyin demon power up transformation.
I think Yu Yu hakusho was kinda weak, it's not bad it's just that it keeps getting paired and even thought to be better than Dragon ball, because it was more 'deeper'.
.
Honestly, Its really for the very fact that it was coincidentally running along Dragonball Z in the early days of Toonami(and dubbed by the same company) that it gets so much attention, but really it wasn't anything special.
In fights, HxH is better than YYH, the posts above prove it. Some good examples are Gon x Hisoka, Gon x Genthru, Killua x Sub, Morau/Morel fighs (Especially Morau, he's a hell of a strategist). YYH is only overpower your enemy, in HxH it's different, when the character realize he/she is incredible weak comparing to his/her enemy, they resort to strategies and psychological games to balance the difference.
@RobbyBevard:
Prince of Tennis is fun when you realize its sort of an embodiment of shonen tropes… applied to Tennis. There's not a whole lot to it, but its fun for what it is.
But the main character is a douchenozzle and the shounen elements quickly go from allowing suspension of disbelief to beyond ludicrous. Exhibit A: the ball splitting cleanly down the middle and each half landing exactly on the line on either side of the court, just to make it a SUPER draw. Fucking ridiculous.
@RobbyBevard:

Yeah, that did happen however, you couldn't realistically expect them to all of a sudden turn that into the way fights would happen. It was a cool trick but that's it. It was also used to further the story and prepare yusuke for what was coming ahead.
Yeah the seemingly random demon transformation that is eventually explained and once again leads us to the what is going to happen next. However, you can so what you want about the demon transformation you want too but Yusuke wasn't a normal human. It was demonstrated time and time again the fight that he was able to take out Toguro who had to wish to become a demon should raise some flags and what do you know it eventually gets explained to us.
@ RPG I'm not even going to bother to read or respond to your post it's too much of a hassle to try too do so with those spoiler tags.

I thought you liked Hunter x Hunter? I guess you're not a fanboy of it and have complaints about it and you don't want gushing about a series that is very good but not great. I think I answered my own question again, but can you lay off Silence, I like him.
I do agree that Miura has more of an excuse than Togashi for being late, with the outstanding art he keeps putting out. Togashi's excuse is that he wants to be with his family, I can't blame a guy for loving his family but you gotta put out work man. Miura also has the vague resemblance of a schedule, unlike Togashi.
Although if you look at the chapter and year counts for Berserk and Hunter x Hunter, Berserk has been around since 1990 and has put out 318 chapters (more coming soon) while HxH has been around since 1998 and has put out 310 chapters. Berserk is 9 years older but only has 8 more chapters (though April 8th there will be more, unlike HxH).
There are a variety of factors to take into account however. Berserk is published in a biweekly magazine while HxH is in a weekly magazine so in the rare instances when neither are in hiatuses HxH comes out twice as fast as Berserk. I don't know why I'm talking about this I just found it interesting.
2 things on an unrelated note.
1. That chick in your video is hot, Zephos. Just saying.
2. Wow, I missed a lot of posts, I don't know how that happened. Oh wait, Almost Legendary, never mind.
Kareem are you a chick ? You don't get tired of the lets all hold hands and be friends shit you be spouting ?

Alright I hate to do this to you man, but that's kind of misogynistic.
Honestly, I'm just trying to be nice is all, and I'm glad that Silence and some other users on AP Forums have reached out to me when I'm new.
But apparently I'm "sucking up" and "self righteous" to certain people.
And to answer your question, no.
Kareem is a guy. And honestly, what's wrong with going on an internet forum to just have fun and talk to people? Why does discussing entertainment on the internet have to be serious business?
Kareem are you a chick ? You don't get tired of the lets all hold hands and be friends shit you be spouting ?
What's with the pressure on the man? We don't need more nice users turning into a-holes overnight, do we?

What….the hell?
I mean I guess being a Paleoconservative this should be expected from you..
But still...what the hell?
I guess AlmostLegendary likes to be hammered by everybody.
Yes.
So it's actually a pretty bad comparison isn't it.
sup, roronoa3000.
ahahaha, what the fuck do you want me to say to that whiny crap?
"OH POOR TOGASHI, YOURE SO RIGHT, WHY DID I EVER JUDGE HIM SOoooo"
Did I? Find it. I remember you going off on somebody, but I don't think it was me. You can probably seriously embarrass me anyway, but have that factual aid, if you want.
I refuse to believe there are two people making this same nonsensical defense of the insane analysis.
…hmmm, well I guess you aren't whoever that was.
So, what, you don't seem to have any issues with the characterization or direction otherwise. It's the ant arc and its overwrought writing you have an issue with? And Togashi's attitude?
There are other issues, not as bad as that.
Are you sure you didn't mistake Silence with Bucephalus, Zephos?
This guy?

And thanks, Robby, I just downloaded the artbooks.
Wow is AlmostLegendary an ass.
What's with the pressure on the man? We don't need more nice users turning into a-holes overnight, do we?
No pressure, just saying people will disagree don't someone to always interfere with the hold hands and be friends mantra. That's all. He can be a nice guy but I don't think that means being a peacemaker.
@Kareem I'll disagree with that. I'm not sure how you can take what I said and come away with that however, if you do feel that way that's fine.

It was the random misogyny.
AlmostLegendary is just sour because people have been criticizing YYH and Reborn. Quick someone throw on the last straw by scrutinizing Kenshin.

Na, no need to be sour people have differences of opinions that's all.
Kenshin is obscenely overrated childs play swordfighting manga with terribly drawn action scenes and almost hilariously inconsistent character designs, and its hardcore fans are among the most retarded for their mix of thinking they read something more sophisticated than One Piece or Dragonball, and their completely unqualified sudden sense of "knowing history" that makes them just as bad as Hetalia fans.

I think you do this on purpose just to get a reaction from me. Anyways I stopped watching Kenshin after Shishio died so I doubt I can be considered a hard core fan. +++ the movie is really good .
I don't need defending, Kareem, thanks.

As I figure it, people wait for Berserk despite infrequent releases - and people wait for HxH despite infrequent releases. It's not like "waiting" means wringing your hands and tearing at your skin through the years of hiatuses and stuff - you move on and read other shit, but you're happy when they're back.
The difference is Berserk's infrequent releases are by design, and obviously - effort. I won't even begin to say that HxH is the same labor of love Berserk is, but I'll also say that HxH probably requires more planning about the plot and contending with more writer's block than many of Berserk's chapters have since the journey to Elfheim started. Miura busts his balls drawing Berserk. Togashi clearly doesn't struggle with the same issue. What does he struggle with? Who can say.
But most are happy when either of them are being released anyway.
I'm not really either/or about it.
@JERK:
ahahaha, what the fuck do you want me to say to that whiny crap?
"OH POOR TOGASHI, YOURE SO RIGHT, WHY DID I EVER JUDGE HIM SOoooo"
It ain't all that. I'm not a Togashi apologist - he is probably at home right now wiggling his dick in the wind. That said, being a mangaka is HARD. As I'd rather he not quit because I like to read his stories, I'm not clamoring for some mangaka standard from him OR ELSE.
On the other side of the fence, Miura is a lonely grognard who has in volume notes lamented how miserable his social life is, shut off his phone because no one calls him, and talks about how he spends so much time drawing he wouldn't even begin to know how to get a woman at this point in his life. And Oda is Oda. Tezuka is Tezuka. Who do I have respect for? These motherfuckers right here.
But yeah I can understand how Togashi wouldn't want to be them. And I don't understand what holding that against him would achieve.
