Oh I forgot this thread existed. And that I posted in it.
@Monkey:
That comes down to a personal thing I guess, I don't see anything cathartic for me in that style. Catharsis for me comes out better I guess through punk and post-punk? Maybe that's a personality thing or something.
I also guess I have a fondness for doing more with less, minimalism. Probably why in terms of angry hardcore rock styles I side with Punk instead of Metal.
I can understand that and as I said I certainly don't blame you if you end up disliking it. I think it really does comes down to personality since, with a few exceptions of certain songs and certain bands, I enjoy my metal pretty heavy. To a point anyways.

As far as my development with Metal, Death Metal is still an alien language to me entirely….but I've actually taken to Black Metal! Dunno really why yet. I stumbled onto some Burzum (everyone's favorite psuedo-nazi murderer! but seriously fuck the guy on a personal level) and was fucking LOVING it. The vocals are goofyish, but the music was awesome. It was doing lots of right things in my book, creating atmosphere and sense of place. Love stuff like that.
I guess if I can crack Black, I can crack Death eventually.
Oh! I'm curious what Black Metal bands in particular you've listened to? Did you start with earlier stuff like Venom and work your way up or are you just sort of trying to find other well known bands?
I guess speaking of Burzum that is one thing you're going to have to deal with if you're going to try to crack Death Metal. In case you haven't noticed, the heavier the metal gets the less shall we say, "cheery" it tends to be. From my experience the Death bands I've listened to tend to be populated with a lot of nihilistic and generally pretty awful people (Though I'll admit Death is nowhere close to being my favorite subgenre of metal so I haven't listened to THAT many bands). So if you can put up with a lot of that, and I do mean a lot of it, then you can deal with Death Metal.

But I definitely still don't understand what in the fuck is the appeal of LOOK AT ME PLAY FAST, LOOK AT ALL THESE NOTES, WHO LIKES COUNTING NOTES acts like Yngwie Malmsteen or Symphony X. It sounds like the shitty side of Prog Rock.
This we can agree with. Especially Symphony X. I can't stand them.
I personally prefer either loud and dumb bands that are just meant to be fun and not deep at all like Children of Bodom or bands with a lot of variety to them that can tell a story or message without it being preachy or ruining the song itself like Iron Maiden.
