Yeah they do. If a wave passes over a tower, the thinner part at the top would be more prone to stresses. I know for sure earthquakes don't bend the top of towers (maybe the bottom). But if it wasn't a tidal wave, the heck happened?
9.0 earthquake hits Japan

Someone must have been flying in the air and then accidentally crashed into it.

D: Damn shit got real. I hope everyone is fine :S
and something not relevant to the topic. Greg got a jap GF :o ?

Here's a link to an english stream on USTREAM via NHK world:

No tsunami is going to wash over Tokyo Tower that high!
Earthquakes can bend the tops of towers, if the top is weaker than the structure below it then you need less G's to affect it's structure. That looks like an aerial so I'd say that's about right.

I heard it as 8.9 on the news lately.-> turns our there are different rates in different places, so…
They're saying it's one of the largest earthquakes recorded.
It's still pretty huge.I was able to reach most of friends that live there but there are still some I couldn't contact with. I hope everyone is alright.
Edit:
I honestly don't want to sound an ass but here's a tweet from dannychoo:Somebody is buying eroge just after the quake RT @akibablog: ソフマップAM館のエロゲーフロア。18:43。お客さんいる #akiba http://twitpic.com/48f0h4
Seriously, Japan?
-
For people confused about differing numbers, Japan and the U.S. have different rating systems for earthquakes.

I honestly don't think the Japanese can create an "I must do this dirty deed/embarrassing thing before I die" list without it already completed.

Oooh ok that explains a lot thanks. Because I've been seeing different rates all over the web and I'm trying to follow streaming news from other countries for there's a tsunami warning.
-
so i would take NHK(japans broadcasting network) to be precise since its their nation afterall that got hit
thanks for clarification
-
What's so scary is how abrupt it was. The earthquake happened in an instant and there was very little time to evacuate before the tsunami set in. I also laugh and cry at the thought of the after-math. Cry because of how horrific the damage is going to be and laugh because they're gonna have to beat back Tokyo tower like a car radio aerial (which kinda sounds silly).

7.1 was one of the aftershocks. It's still pretty huge.I was able to reach most of friends that live there but there are still some I couldn't contact with. I hope everyone is alright.

Life must go on, right?

@Thousand:
Life must go on, right?
I kinda wonder
in a guilty wayif that's an "I won't die until I complete this game" feeling or "I don't care about the world as long as 2D world is safe" feeling ;w;Oh, an aftershock has just been reported right now.
-
looking like also california is getting tsunami warnings now..even though the chances are slim…right?
-
Number of deaths have reached 29 according to some sources, also 10 missing.
-
There's a live broadcast from TBS here http://www.ustream.tv/channel/tbstv
-
I heard Russia and China are being affected too. How are things at the West Coast?
-
Considering it's been hours I'm surprised that the death toll hasn't been too dramatic thus far. I guess people were prepared.
Still I heard the damage was around $100 billion. I'm surprised that they can assess that so quickly.
-

This is actually really, really good when you consider its freaking 7!!! I mean compare to Haiti where a 7 killed hundreds of thousands of people. Hell the New Zealand earthquake was a 6.3 and killed over twice the value of the Japan one. It's amazing how invaluably useful proper protocol and good infrastructure designed specifically for these events can be. The wonders of safe-guards.
-
God save the japanese nation.
Even though mountains won't ever grow in my region, rarely but surely I feel happy about not living in the middle of the ocean on the border of tectonic plates. Nature is too awesome of a force.

With the height of the tower being more than 330 metres, do you still think any wave could be at fault? Whereas, it is very easy for vibrations from the earthquake to affect such construction as a tower.
-
I kinda wonder
in a guilty wayif that's an "I won't die until I complete this game" feeling or "I don't care about the world as long as 2D world is safe" feeling ;w;Or it could be a "I want to do this one last time" feeling:ninja:

-
I know it's a useless wish but I still hope the casualties don't increase.
@Thousand:
Or it could be a "I want to do this one last time" feeling:ninja:
I… actually find that quite possible :ninja:
Edit: I was able to reach all my friends there as of now. I'm glad they're safe. I hope anyone who has any acquaintances around those areas get their good news.

According to the TBS stream it is up to 40 confirmed deaths and 45 people missing. And that is bound to go up way higher. Remember it just happened a few hours ago. No doubt that there will be hundreds if not thousands of victims.
So please don't jump to conclusions every time you see such a figure and use some common sense

AP reports: A 4.5-magnitude earthquake has struck Hawaii as residents brace for tsunami.

There is a problem being reported with the cooling system at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima, and I heard that a state of emergency was declared–-two minutes later I hear that the problem was fixed. I'm very confused.

7.2? Everywhere I've seen has said it was an 8.9…

Yeah portuguese news channel are saying 8,8 , they also said that it has a good chance that it might expand to other countries during this day.
Let's hope there aren't many casualities.
According to that stream you guys posted it is indeed, 8,8.
-
This is very sad news, I hope everyone I know is alive and safe.
-
I hope Oda doesn't change anything significant in his story , it being underwater with things flooding and the prophecy of destruction and all…
-
@Mr.:
Aw, come on. I know that he's been trolling his readers but it's their fault for reading it. No one's being forced to read Bleach.
Anyways as bad it sounds I am hoping Oda in particular is okay. OP is part of my livelihood.
Shut the fuck up.

I read that there is fire in Onagawa nuclear power plant and the problem in Fukushima wasn't real.

Shut the fuck up.
I will not. Stop being rude.
You need to develop some manners JD. I'm calling you JD now because we're best buds.
But anyways, let's not get off topic. I hope the death doll doesn't rise too significantly.
-
In germany they are saying it was 8.8 eathquake…
Poor JP...
-
Anybody watched Tokyo Magnitude 8.0? It was said to be "what if" scenario based on a possibility of an expected earthquake around 7.0 in Tokyo in the next 30 years, it was pretty dramatic. Japanese TV gives reports as 8.8 (as Steven said before, Japan and the U.S. have different rating systems. Our TVs are giving reports as 8.8 also.). Anyway, seems like this is way above expected. Though these large earthquakes are said to happen every 100-150 years.
-
Stay safe Japan and any place being blanketed with Tsunami warnings. I hope there is…I know there will be a great international effort to give aid, food, and support to all affected areas. I just hope it happens as soon as possible. Hell, I hope it started to happen even before I typed this message.
-
When I saw those videos, I couldn't help but to think what would those waves do to people when they've just smashed those cars like paper boats. This is horrible.
And by watching these videos and reading the news, I realized: we have modern technology, we can fly, go underwater, but in the end, it doesn't change a thing… nature is stronger... -

OOHHHHHH WHATS GOIN ON WITH THE COMIC BOOK ARTISTS< WONT ANYONE THINK OF THE COMIC BOOK ARTISTS
God it's like a Japanese guy wondering if Broadway is alright as 9-11 is happening you insensitive fucking twat.

It's reported that they're offering free shelters for those who need one in Japan. Here's a list: http://togetter.com/li/110487

The only good thing about this, is that it gave me hope the earthquake got rid of ishihara.
-
Some news on the nuclear power plants:
Earthquake Update: Nuclear Power Plants Fukushima Prefecture – 3 Nuclear Power Plants on one site. Automatically shut down when earth quake occurred. Emergency cooling system powered diesel generator failed. Alternative pump which can only last for 7 to 8 hours operating. …Residences within 2Km of power plant are being evacuated. Still no signs of radiation leaks.
Edit:
The only good thing about this, is that it gave me hope the earthquake got rid of ishihara.
There are worse people after his job standing for the elections, so let's not get anyone's hopes up… <_<
-
Well that's bad .
-
I have a friend in Fukushima so that power plant business is really worrying me-they also have a major tsunami warning issued as well. It's such a strange feeling–-the area I am in is relatively safe, but everyone is loading up on supplies and the like at stores. Just kind of a surreal, ominous feeling.
By the way, Japan is not the only country going through shit, as I'm sure a lot of you know. Any updates on that would be appreciated as well, as I am having a hard time juggling news feeds.
-
Steven, on USTREAM I notice store shelves are being cleaned. Is there looting? Or are the owners giving away supplies for free?
-
Following NHK at the moment. It would seem that Japan has asked U.S. military to help them with relief efforts.
Also, there has been an aftershock of over 7 richters and a new tsunami warning has been given. The first tsunami wave should hit Hawaii any minute now, so we're probably going to get more news shortly.
-
On the Japanese aid from the US, I've been watching the CNN live stream and they're saying that the Japanese government hasn't asked for help yet. This is due to the fact that the vessels would have to be accommodated, and they might be more trouble at this point. So NHK has reported that they want the help right now?
-
@Thousand:
I don't wanna sound the bastard but I hope guys like Oda and Akamatsu are safe. I also hope Kubo gets smashed to smithereens by a tidal wave.
Shut up.
Also I'd appreciate it if the entire chain of posts that sprang from this moronic post ends too.
