Square made games other than Final Fantasy XIII you goons.
Yes, they also made Dirge of Cerberus and Dawn of Mana.

So why are we only focusing on thier bad games, then?
Because the question is "how trustworthy is the developer". Sure, they have good games, but they have their share of turds too, and even some of their big uber multi-years of development releases, like FF13, have some stank on them.
So its basically "Can I buy any game from this company and basically be guaranteed a product I will enjoy and find worth the money?" And with Squeenix, the answer isn't always yes, and I'm at the point where I don't intend to buy any future installments of main series Final Fantasy.
The correct answer is Atlus.
Exactly. Square's current games can't even compare to Atlus' in terms of quality.
Square just seem to be wanting to kill off the Final Fantasy franchise since no matter what they do the fandom will never admit they've managed to best a game released over 10 years ago with a pretty bad translation.
Personally. With Nier, Dragon Quest 9 and Just Cause 2 Square had some of the better games released last year. The only problem is once you hear the name Square you instantly think of Final Fantasy.
I think I was one of the few people on this forum who actually bothered to sit with XIII to the end. While I agree it wasn't great. I certainly thought it was better than a lot of the shit that I played last year. (Kane and Lynch, Black Ops etc.)
Sazh was and is still pretty awesome. Although doesn't make up for Snow and Hope.
But yes. Atlus have been really outdoing themselves lately. Level 5 is another whose games seem to have been getting better and better
Guys.
it's Gamefaqs.
you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany
(and bad taste)
That said, Nier, though imperfect, is amazing for its aspirations. So I'll give Squenix that, and DQIX, for last year. But I'm betting you that most of the people that dwell on that site and voted in that poll gobbled up poop like FFXIII and FFXIV and asked for seconds, shit still smeared around their smacking lips. Pay them no mind.
I certainly thought it was better than a lot of the shit that I played last year. (Kane and Lynch, Black Ops etc.)
Well, of course certain games are better than shit. But if you stack a big linear totem pole of video games in respect to their quality, then those games that FFXIII is "at least better than" don't make a lick of difference because all the games better than FFXIII still sit on top of it and repeatedly take massive shits all down its face.
Even those that enjoy FFXIII cannot deny it's remarkably niche as fuck and how the best defense to really be summoned to it is "well sorry it's just not your thing. I like it even with its FLAWS." I find it funny that without its Final Fantasy moniker, it probably would have been an underdog RPG that year that few people would play, even want to play, and it might deservingly have a sturdy set of people who really liked it.
Instead it's the RPG everybody played that they wished they hadn't.
Of course that's just judged by the general online reaction. It actually sold well enough and a lot of people probably did like it. It's just
strange
Because there's no broad appeal at all. If you talked about things that embody the experience of playing FFXIII, I bet a huge majority of people would go 'well that doesn't sound too good, without playing it'. The "Final Fantasy" name is the sole thing it has going for it in terms of appeal. The small Xenosaga fanbase size is all it would have gotten without it.
But yes. Atlus have been really outdoing themselves lately. Level 5 is another whose games seem to have been getting better and better
White Knight Chronicles doesn't even remotely compare to the brilliance of Rogue Galaxy and the Layton trilogy hardly has that much difference between them gameplaywise. I love Level 5 but it's hard for me to say that they've been getting better and better.
Square's issues with Europe are enough reason to put them at bottom tier.
the brilliance of Rogue Galaxy
What. Slightly less awful story and slightly less repetitive than Dark Chronicle, but still repetitive with an awful story.
And there may be other games than FF under the SE banner (like KH RE:Coded! Such a pinnacle of creativity!), but no matter how decent these may be, the fact that SE actually had to issue an apology to the poor souls who bought the steaming pile of unfinished horror that was XIV negates that several times over.
Gamefaqs may be gamefaqs, but theres no way we'll see any Squenix business strategy changes as long as people keep lapping their shit up.
@The:

Preferred it to the Dark Cloud games. Didn't find it any less repetitive than any other JRPG. Story was alright - didnt really pretend to be much more than it was. Loved the game through and through
I loved the Dark Cloud games. They were really fun. I agree about White Knight. I own it and find it really hard to get into (and the pointless char creation)
SE didn't actually produce Kane and Lynch though.
They did publish it though, which is what the poll was about.
There's some songs on Final Fantasy XIII's soundtrack that are so entrancing that I could just lean back and listen to them for hours…
So is Final Fantasy XIV really as bad as they say?
Square apologized for it. Think about that.
Think about all the games they've put out recently that they stand behind.
so what exactly did they apologize for? is it the same as what everyone is bitching about?
FFXIV was put out too early. It was potentially what FFXI was and more. That was the promise, really. This sounded wonderful.
The release, however, was not. They released an alpha that felt like a demo (access to some 10% of the game kind of feel) and that was the big grand retail plan.
The only thing anybody did was mess with its elaborate and intricate crafting system, which was absolutely pointless.
There were three things to do:
Participate in 5 minute quests that amounted to killing the same things four times and then waiting 24 hours to do it again. Not even flavor text, or stories, to add to them.
Craft stuff.
Every fifteen levels get access to a main storyline plot, which admittedly was seemingly handled well and possibly great. Not that anybody saw past #2
Without exaggeration, that was Final Fantasy XIV They are already fixing it and trying to update it properly like mad, however, so who knows. By March it might be a great game.
Before anybody tries to be snotty and say "sounds like more than FFXI hahahaha!": no.
I haven't played XI or XIV, so I won't pass any judgment based off of what little I know. But Square apologizing for XIV being bad SOUNDS pretty bad.
I kind of hate this realm of gaming now where games are not complete until a few months or years after it's released and updated to perfection. Not that I refuse to be a part of it or anything: god knows my absolute addiction and over purchase of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.
Although, I won't hate on patches.
I pity the person who tries to play Final Fantasy XIV in a few years and is assaulted with a billion patches to their shitty game.
I am no FF fan actually but FFXII got my attention. I think the Archadian Judges are awesome. But the best thing of the FF series for me are the always hot and sexy looking girls.

Haha, god FFXI already (if you try patching it now) is about a day of patching.
I don't imagine FFXIV will last a decade though. Hell, we don't even know if it'll last until March when it's planned to be on PS3. That's still already way too soon to try releasing it again and consider it "stable".
There's chances that there's too much stigma and inherent flaws that they don't want to bother and it could be seen as a massive waste of money, more than it already is.
For the record though, I haven't even touched FFXIV since early December and even that was just morbid curiosity to see what was updated. I'm 100% out of tune with what they're trying to update it with. I just know that it's still free to play.
It's so awful I just stopped caring, even with curiosities. I already had to suffer with wasting money on it and I want it to the back of my mind.
They've already said that the PS3 release has been delayed indefinitely.
I used to play XI up until a few years ago. It was pretty fun for a time, but the user base killed it for me.
@ShenLong:

Yeah, those judges were great! They got to do loads of cool stuff, and were integral to the plot! Wait, no actually they were criminally underdeveloped with almost no screentime save Gabranth. But they looked cool, I guess!
But yeah, them sexy gals is what FF is all about anyway, hubba hubba a two metre tall playboy bunny in bikini armor is on your team, what more can you ask for in a franchise when pixelated hotties like that can be found?
/biting sarcasm.
I'm replaying FF13… I kind of like how they seemed to be going the Balthier route with Fang.
I have never realized that Yoko Shimomura was the same person who composed the ost of Parasite eve and Street fighter 2.
Since Uematsu's departure, she should have become the main composer of the FF series.
Maybe.
I don't know, I'm a huge, longtime fan of Yoko Shimomura (since Super Mario RPG), but her music has a certain fun, whimsical quality to it that makes me difficult to picture it being used for a mainstream FF.
If she can do something like this for a Mario bros. game…

She can do a mainstream FF game.
i've never heard of her before, but SMRPG. parasite eve. wow. those have good sound tracks.
Also the Kingdom Hearts games, Live-A-Live, and Legend of Mana (with one of the best VGM soundtracks of all time), as well as some of the Front Mission games. She's also composing the music for FFXIII Versus.
She's an absolutely amazing composer.
And I must restate that she did the music for MOTHERPHUCKIN' STREET FIGHTER 2.
She's basically a gender-swapped Nobuo Uematsu.
And I must restate that she did the music for MOTHERPHUCKIN' STREET FIGHTER 2.
Wait…that was her?
Why has her name constantly escaped me until now!?

Totally true, I had effing goosebimps when I heard the Street fighter 2 ost 10 years later. I have never realized until years later how awesome the ost is.
This one is one of my favourite from PE. Incredibly underrated. She and Uemastu are what music is all about. Pure discipline.

sweet remix!
Well if we're pulling out Yoko Shimomura's big guns, we might as well get down to her biggest:

Might as well make a contribution:

This is the normal battle theme.
Crossword just made me twice as excited for this game as I already am.
When is this coming out ag…it's out now!! Play-asia, here I come!
Bonus CD?! Atlus, I love you!
Only $45?! Aussie dollar, I love you!
It's a good day today.
This thread sure died.
or there isn't anything to talk about perhaps?
Well, FFV is coming to the European PSN, if that counts for anything…
I'm saving my money for the 3DS remake of FFV and FFVI.
It will happen. I will hunt Square down if it doesn't.
NGP remakes, please.
Or both. I could live with both.
@Chucklepants:

Yeah but its the Anthology translation, which personally I found boring. So much that it would have ruined the entire game for me if I hadn't noticed how awesome the job system is. Seriously the job system alone made V my favorite 16-bit fantasy.
Anthology translation?
Are they stupid? That's the dumbest thing they could have done!
The Anthology translation of V is fucking horrible, play the Game Boy Advance version instead.

Well it makes sense if their releasing it as a "PS1 Classic" game. Those are always "as is" straight ports and none of them are changed in anyway as far as I know.
The Anthology translation of V is fucking horrible, play the Game Boy Advance version instead.
^Speaks the truth!
Still want a 3DS remake.
I found the Anthology games largely terrible on the whole.
I blame loading times.
^Speaks the truth!
Still want a 3DS remake.
It baffles me that they still haven't done that, along with VI.
Instead we get a bunch of spin offs and an MMO that nobody was asking for.
