I still find it weird that the only way to get The Phantom Tollbooth on DVD is one of those burn-on-demand deals from the Warner Archive. If nothing else, you'd think the mere fact that it was made by Chuck Jones ought to have gotten it a better release than that.

Its not plagarism. Its just confirmation that Miguel and Tulio was the canon couple in El Dorado.
when a friend of mine told me this, I went all happy 8'D
also… Bartok... damn... that movie was epic. and the catchiest song was the f**ked up 'I'm-turning-into-a-dragon-but-I-don't-know-it-but-I-know-I'll-be-better-harder-faster-stronger-mudaferker!', srsly...
it was just the tune...
the only words I really remember are 'the real Camilla comes ooooouuut~' whilst transforming.
...then it turns out it's really 'The Real Ludmilla'
for your viewing pleasure...
maybe nsfw? srsly, why the boob expansion?

There's just something about boobs exploding in size which causes a young child to be traumatized for life :I -
Noone in this forum will know this one, but if you have the slightest interest in norse mythology, check this out; A danish feature film about two kids from Midgard going on a journey with thor And Loki (Don't worry, it's subbed):
YNX_Heix390
It gets more action packed later on, and contains a ton of mythological references. Plus, I just love the atmosphere and style of it. And the music, I still think.
Well, here it is if anyone's curious. -
I'd heard about Valhalla before (I think a picture of Odin from it popped up in Charles Solomon's Enchanted Drawings book about animation), but had never gotten around to watching it. After viewing the first three parts, I have to say that I like it.
Having seen The Illusionist, I have to say that it justifies the hype. It's an absolutely marvellous film though a much more melancholy film than Triplets of Belleville.
-
I have fond memories reading the original Valhalla comics back in the day, so I should probably check out the animation.

How to Train Your Dragon sweeps the Annie Awards.
Good for HTTYD, but Toy Story 3 was still better and it not getting any awards at all is stupid.
-
But is Toy Story 3 still better without the weight of the previous two films and 15 years of nostalgia behind it?
-
I'm amazed that Toy Story 3 was nominated for so little after than Best Picture.
Seriously, looking at it's competition in the rest of the categories, is it any surprise? Why wasn't Tangled or TS3 nominated in all of those categories and films like Despicable Me or Megamind were?
-
Just realized. Its the Annie awards.
Sadly, its pretty well known/heavily rumored that those awards are bought.

Yeah…That does seem kind of weird. Still, I'm glad to see How to Train Your Dragon did so well. I still think I actually liked it better than Toy Story 3, and I absolutely loved Toy Story 3.
Just realized. Its the Annie awards.

That might explain it then. While I love How to Train Your Dragon, artistically, I would still say it gets beaten by Toy Story 3 in at least writing.

I didnt know the serendipity book was a film,, O.o
Anyone seen the Secret of Kells? Its on Netflix and i might watch it,but never heard of it
-
You should watch kells ASAP
Also I think pixar has won the annies enough times anyway. Dreamworks rarely comes up with a quality film like HTTYD so I say let them have it.
-
I fully concur. HTTYD was something special. I love Toy Story, but if HTTYD getting award convinces Dreamworks to make more amazing movies like that, I'm all for it.
-
but if HTTYD getting award convinces Dreamworks to

I still think Bolt would have been better as American Dog. And I don't know anything about it beyond the couple pieces of leaked development art.

Definitely, it's one of the most beautiful films to come out in decades.
-
Apparently Gnomeo and Juliet has some heavy duty Elton John work in it.
Sigh.
I'm now interested despite it the title, premise, the commercials and the "a little adventure goes a lawn way" pun.
I'm sure its no Lion King, Road to El Dorado, or Aida. But still. It shows some class on their part to bring him in.
-
So yeah, when I first heard of Gnomeo and Juliet, I rolled my eyes and said, "Ugh, that's gonna be TERRIBLE."
Then I watched the trailer and some of the promo clips. Now it doesn't look half bad. And from the reviews I've seen so far, you either love it or you hate it. It's certainly no Pixar, but it has a lot more charm than anyone thought it would. Just turn down your snobbish movie critic side and enjoy the fun.
fleXbfXDjmU
I gotta admit. I kinda want to see it just to see Ozzy Ozbourne play a ceramic Lawn Deer. That and apparently there's an Elton John and Lady Gaga duet in it, that only plays in the movie. It's not on the soundtrack.
-
Ozzy Ozbourne play a ceramic Lawn Deer.
…I just might be sold on this movie now.
Not convinced to see it in the theater. But I think I need to at least see it.

Elton John. Ozzy Osbourne. Lady Gaga.

I saw Gnomeo & Juliet, it's an alright movie. There's nothing offensively bad about it. It's not particularly funny, but I give them credit for, for the most part, not relying on pop-culture jokes and dreamworks face (I know it's not a dreamworks film). What carry's the film is it's lightheartedness. There was one thing that I do hold against it.
[hide]As expected, nobody dies. It's not incredibly shocking. The problem is, they make it seem as though Tybalt has died, showing his smashed corpse, yet in the closing scene, they have his reassembled body dancing. It's like when Pell survived, there is no purpose other than to avoid having death in the film.[/hide]I wouldn't say you need to see it, but there are worse movies to see.
DO NOT SEE THIS IN 3D!!! It added literally nothing to the movie. I'm not even sure it was in 3d, I think they just tell you to put on you 3D glasses and hope that you don't realize the movie is still in 2D.

Hoodwinked 2 doesn't look like it'll be worth the ticket price.

OMG I didn't know there was a BFG film! I used to love that book, I read it at least 3-5 times when I was a kid.
Also, yay Unico! I grew up watching that too =3 And She-Ra XD. I have not seen the other films except Scamper the Penguin, my little sister was into that one.
Actually… that Serendipity Dragon... is that the same one that appears as the logo on Leo the Lop? (such a cute book!!)

Franchising and remakes are pretty much 21st Century Hollywood.
-
Franchising and remakes are pretty much 21st Century Hollywood.
Yes, but this movie came out six years ago TODAY (seriously, it came out January 15th 2005). Why would the remake a movie that was made six years ago with VERY MODERATE success and huge hatred and lament.
Open Season having three movies, I could maybe understand. Not as many people hated that.
But THIS! This is like NBC turning around and saying, "You know what show we should bring back? 'The Marriage Ref'!"
EDIT: OH FUCK ME! I just looked it up! The Marriage Ref is having its second season this March! Fuck you, Jerry Seinfeld! Fuck you!

Man I really want to find the old version of the jungle book. It was an awesome animation with mowgli as a kid that took down my prey with a boomerang.
7LflCzZPOHc
I think it was called 'the adventures of mowgli'.ooh. this was actually made in japan. By Nippon Animation, which does not exsist anymore. same company that did that alice in wonderland animated series, and maya the bee. I read up a lot on this company, cause it did another series that I loved to death. The Bush Baby.
It is Near impossible to find these series on DVD, but I managed to find The Bush Baby after years of searching. Alas, not in english, but meh. The Jungle Book was more popular though. They used to have all the episodes in english on someone';s youtube channel. I can't find it anymore though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_Book_Sh%C5%8Dnen_Mowgli
the company even did an anime for little house on the prairie. I'd like to see that some day. (is a little house geek)
man. I need to come to this thread more often.

You should see if you can find the BFG, Serendipity, and Sebastian Starbear. They're all cute movies. The BFG's got great transitions between joy and gloominess, they did the movie adaption well for a low budget kids film.
And yes, Serendipity is the little logo on that book. Serendipity became the company's logo and turned up printed on a lot of their series :>

I did watch The BFG today, it was really good! I actually liked the way they animated it, I think they did it justice. I was sad at the lack of the "Dahl's Chickens" joke though.
Since I was on a nostalgia kick, I re-watched Matilda, the live-action (another Roald Dahl book), that was a cute movie.
I also found something else, Dot and The Whale. I've seen at least three of the movies starring the red headed girl, Dot. The first one was Dot and the Kangaroo. I remember loving these as a kid. I watched Dot and the Whale, it still is pretty good for its time, I loved the message it conveyed through the movie. Though I think its funny that they show footage of Humpback whales, and the one that they are trying to save looks more like a Sperm whale. Still a great old movie, I loved the real footage of the whales and undersea life.

Saw Gnomeo and Juliet today.
! Let me start off by saying that I absolutely loathe the story of Romeo and Juliet. So really, any story in parody or change of it, I knew I'd enjoy. It was cute.
! Far less usage of Elton John songs than I expected. "Your Song" really should have been used as a real song in the movie. But I enjoyed the duet between Elton and Gaga, and Crocodile Rock never hurt anyone. It did kind of suck that most of the songs were kind of background music, but it made the movie all the more pleasant.
! But seriously, this movie was advertised horribly. The story and characters are actually very charming. My favorite was easily Nanette. And I swear to God, Jim Cummings, you can be in whatever movie you want, and I'd be perfectly happy with it. Ozzy voice was awkward at first, but then I completely forgot he voice the deer and just accepted it. And the weirdest thing for me was the fact that Jason fucking Stathem was Tybalt. I would have never recognized that.
! Overall, the movie was fairly fun. The jokes were silly at times, but the best was some of the dialogue and clever humor regarding the gnomes. I expect a ton more shit like "GNOME YA LATER" or something stupid like that, but it was generally pretty clever or cute in terms of gnome jokes.
! Nothing extraordinary, but fun. I could tell they really wanted to make a Disney flick with this, considering the background stories of several of the characters, but I enjoyed it either way. -
This makes me not want to see Gnomeo and Juliet ever: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/current-movie-reviews/gnomeo-juliet.php
-
Okay, I'm not going to say that animated movies should be childish. Because obviously, children can understand concepts like death or tragedy.
! But to hate this movie entirely because it doesn't follow the story of Romeo and Juliet? That's just stupid. Maybe it's because I absolutely abhor the story of Romeo and Juliet, and thus have no respect for it. Maybe because of this, I could care less if the story is altered.
! But to say an entire movie is horrible because they change the ending to have a happy ending? Because they changed the story to it's own humorous concept? I'll admit, if it's trying to be a parody, it's not a very good one. But if it's a movie that's just trying to have some fun with a story we're all familiar with, it's immediately bad.
! The puns are rare, and when a pun happens, other characters shun the pun. And yes, it does end with a dance party. Granted, it's a stupid concept that movies need to stop repeating. But considering the fact that the major theme of the movie is Elton John music….how did you NOT see it coming? -
Despite what I thought when I first saw the trailer, I liked Gnomeo and Juliet; the concept is dumb to its core, but the people making it struck just the right tone to make it work and rather charming altogther. The colors are bright and cheerful, the voice actors make their characters likable, and the film has a sense of humor about itself that's endearing and established literally from the start.
Is it a great film? Well, no, but it is a solid one that is also made in a way that it's a film that will probably hold up fairly well as time goes. People who actually give it a chance will find themselves liking it.
Like Robogorilla said, skip the 3D since it adds nothing and the only ad to really use the 3D effect is Mars Needs Moms, but it's worth seeing.
One complaint I do have about it is directed at Disney rather than the film itself: Where's the damn Winnie The Pooh trailer? You can advertise Mars Needs Moms and Cars 2, but not Winnie the Pooh? This had better not turn into another Princess and the Frog situation where there weren't any ads for it until a few weeks until the film came out.
-
I got Winnie the Pooh for a trailer.
I got watery eyes. And then my sister turned to me and said, "I'm not watching that". Then I cried inside.
-
Smack your sister for me, will ya Insider?
-
guh. i hate winnie the pooh. they're still goin on with that?
and I don't care. you can smack me. I dun likes du pooh. >^>
-
I was trying to decide if this movie would have a big turnout and thought that even if kids don't know Pooh, their parents and granparenrs will and they'll take the kids
-
Smack your sister for me, will ya Insider?
Will do.
I do have another sister who wants to see it. I might watch it with her and her daughter. Of course, this'll be after we curse her husband out for calling Pooh 'gay'.
-
Only those with no soul can hate Winnie the Pooh.
-
I like how even though this is the non-Disney thread Pooh still managed to be a topic.
Eeyore is the best character.
Though when I was little I was all about Tigger. I still have the giant plush I got from Disneyland when I was 6.
guh. i hate winnie the pooh. they're still goin on with that?
How can you not like the silly ol' bear? Did they not endlessly rerun The New Adventures during your childhood in Canada?
-
I'm pretty indifferent to Winnie the Pooh, I think I liked the older ones. Never did get into the movies that came out in the 90's or whatever.
-
@RobbyBevard:

yes. don't remind me. I just don't like the characters or the show. and it irks me more since it's so popular and in your face. meh. each to their own.
remembers taboo's drawing of tiger eating piglet

I have never heard Pooh described as "In your face" before.
You're clearly an Eeyore person. You'd like him if you hate the rest of the neurotic cast and feel of the franchise.
-
Man, Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too is like… Christmas tradition at my house. We recorded it off Tv in the 90s so is has these old Christmas commercials that I know by heart, like the Duracell Rudolph commercial and Denny's holiday mug
:)
