@LightningAce: I used to feel that way. Don't ever watch Hogan Knows Best. It will ruin him for you.
One Piece: Not Just For Kids

-
Everytime I see someone creating threads like these, I can't help but imagine that person thinking to himself "Wheew… SEE GUYS? I'M NOT A KID, THIS IS NOT A KID'S MANGA, I LOVE IT AND I HAVE THE RIGHT TO, I'M NOT A MANCHILD, I'M AN ADUUUUUUUUUUULT :D"
Wow, why are you offended?
I had no opinion whatsoever, I was making a joke based on the title of this thread. Read the quote you were clearly offended at again and try to to be less self-defensive for no reason this time.
Oh man, he's writing a fucking essay
Alright, I'm out of hereBefore I go:
Stop being over-defensive at someone that just posted a joke to try to be funny, stop being offended at the single sign of someone possibly mocking you and your taste, even if he obviously isn't considering he shares itThat is all
You, sir, get a T on your "posting etiquette" NEWT, for Troll.
Fucking imbecile.
Well just take a good look at this article:
http://www.animevice.com/news/is-this-for-real-famous-animemanga-fans/3194/Ba ha ha ha, how is anything on Jason David Frank's list "surprising"? He was an actor in the american remake of a Super Sentai series, so it's obvious he can't be averse to Japanese productions, and he's a super fucking hardcore martial artist, so of course a ton of battle manga are on his list XD
My favorite part of the entire link is that Hulk Hogan likes Kinnikuman <3 He knows what the real coolest fake wrestling is, after all! ^_^

Define "western."
The only things that make it any more western than Naruto and Bleach is that the series isn't based in Japanese mythology for the most part.
The art style doesn't make it western either, as there are plenty of western comic books with big eyes and plenty of Japanese anime without them.Still doesn't change the fact it looks not very much within the 'anime look' most have that style of the big-eyes and that exotic escapism that is a major appeal to the Japanese people and One Piece doesn't really have that.
And don't forget the many references to western pop culture(the recent mentioning of the Krakken, and the flying dutchmen) and Disney like feel in its presentation (though there are signs of nationalistic Japanese culture) still very much the odd over the top goofy designs you see in many in western art; and comic-strips like Popeye(see Franky).
-
Also for the people arguing a bit about if they see any reason to feel embarrassment or shame in liking One Piece. The world is a screwy place. I know people right now that would mock me if I tried to talk to them about One Piece and at the same time they are avid fans of The Jersey Shore and will openly disuses the newest episode of that mind numbing garbage in public. Its screwy I tells ya, screwy.
Lol that's so true, however I now wear my coat with the straw hat patch on it every chance I get to let the world know that I read One Piece. Got to represent.

I don't think East Blue was as kiddish as people are making it out to be. Morgan ordering his troops to kill themselves,
Don gassing his own crew member to death, and Sanji vomiting up his internal organs while fighting kurobi. But glad Oda has such an audience.
-
simple answer for this is because kids of those ages simply do not have the money to buy the magazine. the survey done was to show who BUYS it, not who consumes it. therefore, parents could be buying it for their kids, but in reality, the survey records it as the parents buying it. really main reason is kids do not have the cash to continually buy magazines weekly.

Hulk Hogan likes Pokemon. :ninja:
At least he likes One Piece too.Well just take a good look at this article:
http://www.animevice.com/news/is-this-for-real-famous-animemanga-fans/3194/Wait didn't Hogan host the fox box back when One Piece was on there?

@HiroVoid:
What are you talking about!? Naruto has the coolest opening ever!
d8xoTBZrzko
GOD FUCKING SHIT, MY WORST CHILDHOOD NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!! ITS FUCKING bACK !!!!
They haven't used that in years. We have the Japanese openings now.
Doesn't save anything else, though. The voices are ok, would they be on any other channel, or exclusive to DVD, the dub could have been good, I think.
Forget about CN seriously they will always prefer Naruto because its the manga with the largest fanbase in America and therefore gets good ratings.
In Germany it's the other way around Naruto got screwed up badly by 4kids (including yet another hilariously bad rap intro) and One Piece got way better treatment without any sort of censoring and somewhat decent voice acting.
It's sad though that no real attempts were made to bring One Piece closer to the American audience.
Someone missed the German episodes 263-314 and 377 (Which may have been uncut, but had really bad dialogue censor). =P

I don't remember that at all.

Yeah I know they changed the Naruto ending but it was really a lazy solution. And Japanese Naruto openings are pretty awful as well (especially the songs sometimes) compare this to the OP openings the German ones sound actually pretty decent even though the originals are overall better.
And I don't know about those episodes I haven't watched German OP in a long time simply because I'm not even at home when it airs so I just stick to the Japanese episodes which interest me. But as long as the censoring isn't on 4shame level I think we got nothing to complain about.

In real life, when people bring a fish up from deep waters, its organs will burst, and usually the eyes will burst.
-
One Piece doesn't get the love it deserves in the west, compared to Naruto for example…
That is mostly due to what 4kids did to it
-
-
It's the same thing in France…
I figure the new dub would be doing better in France since it's on T.V. Or has that changed? Plus they're really far along in pushing out the episodes.

One Piece: Not Just For Kids
i read it as One Piece: Not Just 4Kids

Yeah, the new subs are waaaaay better than the first ones (though I don't watch them, they still suck like crazy compared to vostfr and, of course, the manga), but in terms of manga sales, I think Naruto is still better…

Yeah but doesn't "One Piece" sell really well in Europe compared to here?
-
I honestly wonder why One Piece is so popular in Japan….I mean a vast majority of the manga that is popular in Japan is mostly garbage with the most generic character designs. One Piece is perhaps the most western of the shonen trinity, yet it's most popular fictional work in the that country by far.... I mean It's just a mystery.
I heard Toriko is very popular there too.
@HiroVoid:

This is was what made me not give Naruto a chance after considering it when I heard it was going to be on TV.
Yeah but doesn't "One Piece" sell really well in Europe compared to here?
Ya know, here is someone who lives in Europe and in whose country the series has never been published and doesn't even have an active forum. And it had only one inactive one as far as I know.
-
Yeah, no big surprise here. Everyone knew i liked OP and DB in high school and i never got picked on for it. You only get socially mocked when you yourself make it a big deal.
-
One Piece does fairly well here, I believe.
-
It's the same thing in France…
LOL, there were like 5 guys for the entire cast. So they were forced to changed their voice when they dubbed another character, and the result was most of the time atrocious. Sanji and Usopp's voice were terrible. The translation was also really bad. For example Gold's Roger treasure wasn't called "One Piece", and Luffy's named wasn't Monkey D. Luffy but "Luffy dit le Singe" which basically means: Luffy aka Monkey.
-
So what was One Piece called in french ?
-
So I guess I'm in the minority according to the chart. Amazingly enough I watched the 4Kids dub as my intro to the series! That was back when I was like 9 I guess. After it got cancelled I mostly forgot about it for a few years. I just started reading it a couple years ago when I was 13. Now I'm 15 and I'm still reading it. I'm surprised I even came back to it after how awful the 4kids was. I'm happy I did though!

Isn't it OnePiece in every language?
-
Isn't it OnePiece in every language?
I think he's referring to the Frenchs disdain for the English language :ninja:

(Note: just using the U.S. as an example here)
I think a big elephant in the room is that in some countries, One Piece is - practically speaking - NOT for children. Per the social mores of the United States, it'd actually be very improper to let a child earnestly read the manga or watch the show: it has many sexual themes comparable to a PG-13 movie, and violence that outdoes many R-rated films. Given that, why would/should a child be watching that in a society like ours?

One Piece is easily a show for teenagers as well.

One Piece is easily a show for teenagers as well.
I just call it a family show. It's targeted toward older kids, but it can easily appeal to everyone. That's usually a quality that shows when a show is really good like a Pixar film. Not like a movie like Alpha and Omega where they target toward kids, but throw in random dumb jokes for adults.
-
One Piece is too manly to be for kids, and IMO ppl over 13 ( or 14 ) are no usual kids still I'd label One Piece like +15 or +16 perhaps.
-
I'd say "One Piece" is like a 10 and up series generally speaking.

A lot more North Americans got into OP this way then they would be willing to admit.

I'll admit it….
Of course, this was also a time where I was just starting to learn there was more anime than what was on Toonami and started reading actual manga as well.

this is pretty much my stance, too, although i'm not a huge fan of pixar.
it's aimed at teens, but can easily be enjoyed by anyone, and that's really a demographic that doesn't really exists in the U.S. -

So what was One Piece called in french ?
The anime was still called One Piece, but Gold Roger's Treasure didn't have any name. It was just the Great Treasure or something like that.
-
One Piece is the best selling manga currently published in italy too.
-
But doesn't the Italian anime have Luffy's name as the Italian word for Rubber?
I remember a friend telling me that they didn't even edit his wanted poster, and that he said something or other about changing his name.
-

I think that might be what makes it popular.
I agree. When I was a young misguided fool, I was interested in Bleach and Naruto because of their exotic japanese flair. Ninja fights? Swords? Kimonos? Those… robe-y things? Impossible wooden shoes? That's what attracted me.
When I saw One Piece, I thought - Pirates? I saw people dressed in normal western clothes (Sanji for example), ships, english names, etc, and it didn't pull me in. And Then I saw that disgusting 4kids rap opening, and that put me off for GOOD.
Long story short, I, being western, was attracted to mangas which was based on the exotic japanese culture, so perhaps for those in Japan who are immersed in such things, the western side of One Piece is attractive to them. That and maybe they're all just way smarter, and can tell a good story from a mediocre one.

They called him "Rubber" from the get go (the english word "Rubber") which is a dumbass decision because almost all the other names are intact. When the D. issue came out they just had a character say (don't remember who) that Monkey D. Luffy is his real name while Rubber is a nickname he always used. DUMB SHIT right here folks.
-
She said this happened when his bounty first appeared … but I don't think she was a fan back then, so who knows what she saw.
-

Good lord in heaven what the fuck am I reading ?

Volume 3, 99th page, Luffy says "Mon but est de trouver "One Piece" " which means "My goal is to find One Piece".
But they call Grand Line "La route de tous les périls", something like "The road of all dangers" or some similar bullshit…EDIT : Didn't see you were speaking about the anime ><"
-
Italians sure are crazy about anime. :)
-
One Piece is too manly to be for kids, and IMO ppl over 13 ( or 14 ) are no usual kids still I'd label One Piece like +15 or +16 perhaps.
one piece isz so manly
@Joe:
Yeah, no big surprise here. Everyone knew i liked OP and DB in high school and i never got picked on for it. You only get socially mocked when you yourself make it a big deal.
this 100%
also most of the younger crowd's riding on mommies credit card so that will change the numbers a great deal. not saying that adults and older people do not read it (just take that into consideration)
-
Wow, how is this news..?
-
-
Yeah, the Italian anime intro now goes "Monkey D. Luffy, aka Rubber"–Which doesn't explain why Marines would call him by any name besides the one on the wanted poster but idk.
-
-
The funny thing about all this is that Oda has stubbornly and repeatedly stated that One Piece is a manga for young boys.
