@Yuugi's:
According to kei17, Kusao Takeshi has confirmed they aren't going to cover the Majin Boo arc.
That's a major bummer.
On the other hand, doesn't that mean Kai's spot will be taken by the upcoming Toriko anime?
I can live with that.

Yup, that's been the plan for a few months now. I just hate it's taken this long for a form of confirmation.
-
Well, that's good and bad news:
-Good: those who wanted Gohan to save the universe and nothing after get their wish.
-Bad: There is never going to stop being the whole idea that maybe they could have done a full to-the-manga version if they didn't decide to milk it. -

If Toei was smarter they would cover the Boo arc with the reanimated ending, but nope stop at where many videogames stop at: The Cell arc. -

That seriously sucks. Again, I'm glad Toriko is being given such a big timeslot, but I really don't see why they couldn't do the Buu saga.
Oh well.

@RPG:

No, he was always pretty useless. Piccollo kicked his ass pretty soundly too. He was just good for the one tournament where he was evenly matched with Goku. By the next tourney 3 years later Goku destroyed him pretty easily.

I'm amazed they're letting the cash cow die. Seems stupid.
Guess I don't need to bother with the dvds now.
The skipped over a hundred chapters of the first part and now this?
The problem is, they didn't skip ENOUGH. There was still a ridiculous ammount of filler in there. It could have fit into 100 episodes without cutting a panel of manga content pretty easily.
-
Is dragonball still the second best selling manga series of all time?????
I remember one piece passing it but I don't know if anyone else did…. I thought naruto was close last time
-
It's not really a cash cow anymore. Dragon Ball merchandise sales have been going down rapidly in Japan.
-

Yeah, basically. Here's the Kanzentai article on the subject.
Also:
@Daizex.com:
In video game news, DragonBall Kai: Ultimate Butôden was released for the Nintendo DS in Japan exactly one week ago, and the sales are in. In its first week of release (reporting from January 31st to February 6th), the game moved 31,108 copies, making it the fourth-best performing game of the week.
As a bit of comparison in the portable arena:
DragonBall DS sold approximately 70-80,000 copies its first week in Japan back in 2008
DragonBall Kai: Saiya-jin Raishû (also for the DS) did 73,915 copies its first week in 2009
DragonBall DS 2 moved 17,494 copies its first week in 2010
DragonBall: TAG VS on the PSP sold 19,080 copies its first week in 2010
Sales figures are all over the place when you compare portable to console games, but at the end of the day, there is an exponential downward trend going on — so much, in fact, that no DragonBall games were reported on Namco-Bandai's most recent quarterly figures, the first time in a while during their release window.
DragonBall Kai: Ultimate Butôden has still not been announced for distribution outside Japan. We heard rumblings of DragonBall DS 2 coming stateside about two months after its Japanese release last year, which still leaves a window of opportunity here, even with the 3DS on the horizon. It is interesting to note, however, that Ultimate Butôden was not shown off in any capacity at Namco-Bandai's recent "IGNITE" event in San Francisco last week, where other new announcements were made.
There is a bunch of European licensing news for us to catch up on, but it will have to wait just a little while longer!
That's some pretty damning evidence. What's more, the upcoming OST collection will contain seventy-six pieces, only six of them 'new' and 'unreleased'.
Things just aren't looking good for Dragon Ball in Japan as a whole.
-

yeah but it was still number 1 for years then one piece passed it so i figured that much, but I was wondering if any other series has passed it
…... or maybe I have no clue what I'm talking about.... i don't really know
-
Very stupid decision on Toei's part.
I would do a facedesk, but I'm afraid I might knock over my soda. So, a facepalm will have to suffice.

It's should be no surprise DB isn't as hot as it used to be, It's been over for more than a decade. But DB is still fairly popular in Japan and in most other countries, nowhere near at it's peak but it's fairing well for a series started in 1984 it's at least aged better than most old school shonen.

The real issue is with the products being sold: they're simply the same thing over and over again. The games are always the same "Raditz to Cell/Boo" with the same weak mechanics and Dragon Ball Kai comes out more as a poor man's Dragon Ball Z with replaced actors, recycled footage, different music, stunt casting, and AKB48 being heavily promoted with a Kaze wo Sagashite-esque ending theme for the Cell arc. Then there's the actor's being bored out of their minds repeating the same lines they do in the yearly video games. It's really not much of a shock that things have progressed this far when only a few years ago the Kanzenban and Dragon Boxes had actually restarted the interest in Dragon Ball. Toei missed their mark with doing actual new material when they only produced Heya! Son Gokû and Friends Return!! and Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans (which itself was rushed and primarily poorly tossed together).
The real killer here is the quasi-half-assed effort being placed into Dragon Ball products these days.

I agree completely.
-
The only thing I'm miffed about is thay FUNi won't be able to correct the Buu arc and the fact that Croos Epoch STILL isn't animated after the two series have been airing together for two years, while Toriko comes out of fucking nowhere and hits the gold before even airing its first episode.

They tried to do a game with "deep" street fighter-like gameplay. It was called Super Dragon Ball Z. It was quite good, but it flopped. Now we're back with more Budokais and Tenkaichis.
-
Confirmation from Kei:
@kei17:
I'm back, and now it's 100% confirmed.
"There are only four episodes left for Dragon Ball Kai"
"I hope they will remake the Buu arc as well if they get a chance"They tried to do a game with "deep" street fighter-like gameplay. It was called Super Dragon Ball Z. It was quite good, but it flopped. Now we're back with more Budokais and Tenkaichis.
Apparently the recent DS game, Ultimate Butôden, returns a bit to a 'better' gameplay style.
-
It also returns to being an absolute flop.
-
Even if Jump will always sort of tie itself with DB, it was riding on a nostalgia wave in Japan that has finally ebbed with everything out there. It will always be part of pop culture but somehow the problem is that it is something that has been around for so long that everybody knows it by heart and they were just getting those who didn't grow up during the glory days.
-
The Cell arc is a fairly decent ending point for Kai now that I think about it.
-Vegeta swearing never to fight again(though this is contradicted by the Boo arc).
-Began with the portion where Gohan was introduced.
-Goku figuring that the world would be better off without him, he even makes the argument that Bulma even stated he attracts a lot of trouble.- Goku passing the torch to Gohan officially.
-Good ending for all the characters, except Yamcha.
I believe I'd heard from someone(Greg was it?) that the Japanese hated the Boo saga, so meh.
Anyway, I think it's a fair ending point to the series. Though I still don't care for the Cell arc.
- Goku passing the torch to Gohan officially.
-
It's a good ending point in theory, but when you look at the execution, it's extremely lackluster. Not that the actual ending is much better, if at all.
-

Yes? With hadoken and SRK motions? And all that jazz?
I mean, it can be done. A f*cking Bleach game is considered the best ds fighting game, with ratings of 8 and above. And it's a 40+ characters game with quite the deep gameplay.
If f*cking Bleach has the best ds fighting game, DB can, no, MUST surpass it. And once DB is done, is OP time. IT MUST BE DONE!
-
I think it's a fine ending. I will miss watching DragonBall Kai every weekend but I'm also looking forward to Toriko as well. I've been reading the manga for a while now. It's an awesome story!
Though I still have mixed feelings about the Toriko X One Piece crossover, the anime hasn't even started yet. But I'm sure fans in Japan will be aquainted with the charcters since they probably would've already seen the 3D Toriko movie.
I do hope though that Toei gives us some more DragonBall related material in the future.
!

Toei admits Dragon Ball Kai score infringes on Hollywood films, replaces music with Kikuchi score.
Looks like Yamamoto Kenji just got owned.
-
Wow I liked Kenji Yamamoto's score's, but you tell by listening to them that some were rip-off's of other music. It would be interesting to hear Kikuchi's scores in the next episodes of Kai. Edit: Also if these score tracks are removed from Japanese reruns I wonder what the english dub currently airing in the U.S. will do? Will they have those changed too?
-
Yeah, FUNi might have to scramble to replace the home videos, Nicktoons, and the Toonzai airings.
Apparently some fans in Japan have already seen re-airings with the Kikuchi score. Very strange…
-
They should have just left the original score in to begin with. I understand they'd have to rework it for the different pacing, but hell, I own the soundtrack. They could have easily mixed and matched.
-

They made new music so they could make money.

This. One of the reasons why I skipped over Kai was because of Kikuchi's original score not being there. (I own the some of the OSTs of Tenchi in Tokyo and Dragon Ball, I really enjoy his music) Now would be kind of too late to watch Kai now as they won't animate the new ending (They might have not anyway) and there's like only 4 episodes left. It's ashame they had to end it so soon.
-
All the new news about Kai is really shitty these days. Hope it gets better…:getlost:
-
That's right, Super Saiyan 3 Future Trunks…only available on the Japanese arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. Well, until the eventual port to Raging Blast 3…
-
Its kinda nice they're being a little more creative with the forms and introducing stuff that never happened… but I rather liked the wacky random fusions they had several games back, then never used again.
-
Why does Super Saiyan 3 look horrible and bland on everyone but Goku.
-
Cause Goku has that one strand that goes forward in front of his face. All the others just have it all go back.
It makes a difference.
-
Actually, Trunks gets two little strands for his Super Saiyan 3.
-
Oh wow! I like that picture of Future Trunks!! I hope they go more into his story!!
-
Meh. Wished they were a little more creative with some of the characters. Next thing you'll know know we'll have Super Saiyan 4 Gotenks and what not.
-
when will they give piccolo some bull shit power up
I could deal with yamcha, krillin and tenshin all becoming fodder, but piccolo that's crossing the fucking line

Maybe this is my town just sucking, but has Funi recalled any of the DVDs of Dragon Ball Z Kai part 4 due to this whole music legal issue? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I know of no officially announced recall. Besides, if that was the reason wouldn't the first three parts also be off of the shelves?
-

Piccolo is a bit of a tragic character in Dragonball. Always fighting when in the end it turns out he never stood a chance in the first place. Look back at all his fights, the only time he really had a chance was with his first encounter with Cell and that was ruined by a solar flare. Even when he got his last big power up, becoming the strongest Z warrior briefly, it turns out android 16 had the power to crush him the whole time.

True. I didn't think of that.
In any case thank you. I guess I'll just have to look outside of my dirthole of a town for the new DVD.

yeah true but he was always in that power struggle with vegeta, goku and gohan, I just wish they had kept him at vegeta's level, like give him one more dumb ass power up so he was equal with vegeta, have a zoro sanji type thing happen…. that would have been great
-
Piccolo got shafted BIG TIME in the Majin Boo Arc.
-
Piccolo got shafted BIG TIME in the Majin Boo Arc.
Not as bad as Vegeta. Dude sold his soul and then died in order to catch up to Goku, only to then discover Goku was totally holding back during their fight anyway.
