Go watch Beelzebub and read the manga too.
Anime Winter 2011 Line Up
-
-
Well, I saw a couple more. Vanguard is okay, but it still has nothing on YGO IMO. And Kore wa Zombie desu ka… well, the end was freaking weird and disturbing, but I still liked it. I'll tune in for more.
-
Level E was great. Beautiful animation, and some really good jokes. Loved the line where the alien says that the main character has the makings of an excellent psychopathic killer
-
Dragon Crisis is… mediocre. I'll probably watch a few more episodes to see where it goes though.
Anyway, that's about it for me. I'm not trying anything else out other than the animated version of Supernatural that I still haven't been able to find yet.
-
Well, looks like I'm picking up GOSICK and Yumekui Merry this season.
GOSICK's pilot wasn't bad, but at the same time didn't knock any socks off. But I didn't expect the opening mystery of a mystery series to be all that big, so that was fine, and as more characters are introduced and the scope grows I'm sure things will get more interesting. I like the old-timey setting, though I have to question the historical plausibility of a Japanese exchange student in 1920s not!Italy. Then again, I might as well be questioning the historical plausibility of Grevil's hair for all the good that'll do me.
Yumekui Merry has the potential to have some rather unsettling stuff, and I am interested in the dreams aspect of it. And you can't go wrong with a cat-reaper voiced by George Nakata. Merry herself though, seems a bit overdesigned, especially compared to the male lead. Like the designers were all ''Holy crap, a girl!'' and threw together a whole bunch of video game design elements (striped stockings, plumey tailcoat, ribbons, rectangular pupils, face markings, etc.) in an attempt to grab attention. This series will probably set some kind of record for number of midriff shots, I'm sure.
-
that zombie show sounds horrible.
Take this, the "oniichan" series and Dragon Crisis and you have the epitome of everything wrong with anime these days. You know what to expect by the "desu" in the title alone.
Level E was great. Beautiful animation, and some really good jokes. Loved the line where the alien says that the main character has the makings of an excellent psychopathic killer
Loved it too. Very strong premiere and i don't think a Pierrot production ever looked this pretty.
Funny how an adaptation of a 90's manga feels like a breath of fresh air. -

Funny how an adaptation of a 90's manga feels like a breath of fresh air.Yeah there's something very wrong with some of the things they like over in Japan. Really haven't been liking some of the anime that's been coming out me and my friend has been talking about it.
Yeah Level E was great I'm not surprised considering its from the guy who made Yu Yu Hakusho.

I'ma check this show out considering I've only heard good things about it so far.
-
Beelzebub: good stuff, made me read the manga too, which I'm loving.
Level E: very nice and interesting. I think this might be one of the few shows I'm going to try and not spoil myself for since I haven't read the manga.
I'm thinking about trying out Vanguard because it looks terrible enough to amuse me. And I think that might be it for winter anime for me, so far. Nothing else really strikes a chord with me.
-
kimi ni todoke ^_^
-
Hey Malcom, do you have AIM?
-
Kore wa Zombie Des Ka.
Everything about it shouldn't work…but it does.
I actually enjoyed it more than Beelzebub's first episode.
-
-
SO I checked out a couple more animes.
Wolverine: First no costume. Well the episode wasn't bad it was just wolverine killing fodder to fodder. What really annoyed me was the fact that most of the side characters kept repeating "logan" over and over again I know his fucking name.
Dragon crisis: Nice animation, decent fight scene and effects and it also gives off a toaru majutsu no index/outlaw star vibe. Down side the dragon girl the mains saved keeps repeating one fucking name over and over it's like orihime on tourettes fuck it's annoying.
Cardfight!! Vanguard: Honestly I really liked this one. Nice simple plots are also enjoyable
Kore wa zombie desu ka?: This is basically Bleach + card captor sakura + HOTD + Fate stay night. Pedobear and the crap had me rofl.
Level E: Smooth animation, funny jokes and likeable characters… where is episode 2???
Infinite stratos: Harem anime with some what decent plot not really feeling it.
-
I'm liking the magical girl show so far.
-
I… hate to link to ... Sankaku (nsfw) of all places, but watching many of the first episodes this season, it seems prudent. Nay, I must: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2011/01/14/winter-2011-revisited-now-with-even-less-originality/
that said, it looks like I'll be watching Hourou Musuko, Level E, Madoka because lol SHAFT, and then Freezing when I want to shut off my brain.
-
I liked Level E. But I prefer the manga. Some jokes were done better there. Like the part where he was using puppets in the anime, whereas it was really him doing weird faces in the manga.
-
So, I watched the first episode of Hourou Musuko, and it was seriously outstanding. I've read the manga after hearing much about it, even though it was definitely not my think, and the characterization and just how down to earth the storytelling is is to be commended. A much darker and more serious show than to be expected from the soft and gorgeous art style. Hands down worth the wait.
Will be one of the best shows this season, no question about it.
Of course, I knew this would be the case, having watched Aoi Hana (based on a manga written by the same author, also dealing with gender issues between children).
-
Hourou musuko has an anime? That's a wonderful series, kind of sad and uplifting at the same time. Gotta check that one out.

Interesting…is the anime as good as the manga in this case?
-
Hourou Musuko, the manga, is practically a masterpiece, to anybody who hasn't checked it out.
So yes, if the anime follows it damn close, it should in fact be absolutely spectacular.
These explosive words sort of betray the soft and poignant tone of the series, but I must reiterate: it's very fine.
I must also say that what's especially incredible is its handling of the subject matter, which is quite realistic and grounded.
The anime, so far, seems very, very promising so I'm exciting.
-
Yall taste in anime seems pretty weird to me. How can you find an anime about transsexuals to be appealing?
-
That particular story (for men) is about the futility of rebelling against societal norms when you can't do anything about physical changes.
Not that Yoroi Mikoto would know anything about that…
-
Yall taste in anime seems pretty weird to me. How can you an anime about transsexuals be appealing?
I'm a transsexual you bloated idiot.
-
Yall taste in anime seems pretty weird to me. How can you an anime about transsexuals be appealing?
cause it could have a good story? cause its a cool theme that isnt talked about a lot?
just saying
now go read it
-
Even if I wasn't, you're still a massive fucking moron AlmostLegendary.
The question, "the appeal of transsexuals", is inherently absolutely stupid. The appeal to the series is richly developed, human characters (arguably bogglingly so for their age, but regardless) with subject matter that is largely ignored in all forms of media. It is all mostly quite grounded in reality, especially, and many a transperson, or potential one, (or even other identities, as the cast goes beyond just that) can identify with many of its characters and their handling of what they are going through.
I don't even have to say "transgender shit only", because that implies that the issues the cast finds themselves with are things that are exclusively met with gender dysphoric individuals, which is completely false. The series is first and foremost about gender and sexual identities, which are universal concepts.
Thus, the appeal lies in whether or not you'll actually be able to put aside ill-conceived societal constraints and false ideas about the subject matter to see that it's fucking well told.
Your statement implies complete and total ignorance of actual gender identity issues, but until you actually say something like "aren't transsexuals just Rocky Horror" I refuse to press that end of the issue, based on a lack of information to tear into.
-
cough someone just got pwned… as for hourou musuko I saw it yesterday, the animation style is very unique and well done. The story caught me off guard to say the least but the concept is interesting and overall this anime reminds me of Time of eve for some reason.
-
Yall taste in anime seems pretty weird to me. How can you an anime about transsexuals be appealing?
You almost redeemed yourself to post this?
-
I'll just apologize and say sorry. Since I didn't mean my comments to be offensive and I don't want to get into an argument over this. I don't have a problem with it I just don't understand it from you guys perspective. So once again I'll again and leave it at that.
In other news the gosick mystery seem pretty easy to figure out.
-
No One Piece fan should be talking shit about a transexual showing up in any anime. Not for nothing, because Bon Clay, Ivankov and the trannies are awesome, but let's be real here.
-
I work for a production company that makes short films. At work I'm an artist, a writer, and a storyteller. At play I'm a gamer, a bookworm, a film geek and a roleplayer. Ultimately between all of my interests and talents, there's a lot of overlap.
I've reached a point in my life where I've ceased to make distinctions between anime, manga, comics, cartoons, books, television, video games and film - whether they are worthy pursuits or not, whether they are beneath me or not, whether they are too stupid or not, and just decided to enjoy what I enjoy and try and enjoy what I don't rather than making a big shitfit of everything. At least I try to enjoy not enjoying what I hate. I relapse sometimes, but it's pretty smooth sailing usually.
There's value in everything. When I think up characters, I think of the elements I enjoyed from this film, or the defining scene of that manga, or the feeling I got from that game.
My sister and I go see the Twilight movies (for free, I probably wouldn't otherwise). And they're AWFUL. Hilariously so. We get a huge kick out of how bad they are. We see bad characterization, and we know what NOT to do, when we make our own. I read Bleach and see Aizen, and I know how NOT to tell a story. I watch Code Geass Season 2, and I know how much is TOO much. I try to see potential in a lot of things: it may serve you well to try the same, AlmostLegendary.
One of the major reasons I watch or read anything - but in this case, read manga - is for the satisfaction of a story well told, characters well developed, and the emotional impact these leave on me. Any story with that kind of gravitas is a story worth my undivided attention.
Hourou Musuko is one of those stories. It's got depth and is impressively adult for the age of its characters. Mature. Sensitive. Fuckin' heartbreaking. I have no interest in crossdressing (but I will admit to watching Ru Paul's Drag Race with my sis, funniest, most fabulous shit on television, despite the amount of dong D:). At all. But it's really much more than that. Like Holy Hell says: it's about identity.
Now the anime begins 4 volumes in. Having read the manga I'm pretty comfortable starting here if only because the first episode is so strong and treats the kids like human beings who already have connections and issues and concerns - not like so many shows in which characters are hollow talking points or the same tried archetypes that kill you a little on the inside to see. But I recommend reading the manga even if you watch the anime: there's 34 chapters to read to get to where the anime is starting, and if you like good writing and human characters… like, human characters, not moe moe tsun tsun fuckall, get fucking started.
I've got pretty high standards and sometimes I'll talk this much about shit that meets those standards.
So read Hourou Musuko, transsexual or not.

I'll respectively pass. I've stepped out of my norm for animes before however, there's certain things I won't step out of my norm. This topic happens to be one of them. If it's a good/deep story then that's fine. I however, won't be watching it.

They're. Little. Kids.
It's about elementary schoolers confused about what it means to be a boy or a girl not some Silence of the Lambs dick tucking shit. Or some Kampher WAI WAI KAEDE-SAN likes FEMALE Natsuru but Natsuru is really a MALE in an all-girls school THINK OF THE ANTICS shlock.
There's no need to feel threatened by it.
But if that's your choice, s'your choice.

Why can't we just respect one another's opinions?
-
Why can't we just respect one another's opinions?
Because this is the internet, apparently.
-
It's not even opinions. It's being repulsed from something because of matters that in no way should bother anybody, but because of their own absolute preconceived ignorance, they withold from the subject because it "bothers" them. "Gotta cast out those concepts that don't tie into how my world view was formed when I was four years old."
"You guys can enjoy that kind of thing, but I sure won't, because seeing things like men kissing, or people not adhering to gender roles, challenges my social views too much "
The issues lie entirely in the implications of what AlmostLegendary garbles about.
I don't give a rat's ass if you watch it, like it, or give much thought towards it. But don't be a big dummy and say "wow you guys have weird taste for watching something with TRANSSEXUALS in it!" That's incredibly unhealthy as a thought process. Especially earlier, when you describe "stepping out of your norm" and how you refused to do so for certain things, implicably: trans subject matter. I don't believe you understand that what you are effectively divulging are in fact your prejudices.
Basically there's no way around it. The more you talk on this subject, the more you're just going to unravel and reveal what a completely disgusting being you are, whether or not you fully understand so. But you don't have to be.
As long as you understand that there is a world outside that doesn't adhere to the exclusive nature in which you live your life, you could feasibly start understanding what concepts like gender and the nature of sexuality can actually mean.
-
Just watched Horou Musuko.
Very appealing visually. That alone caught my interest to continue watching it. I highly anticipate a blu-ray release in the near future.

It's weird for a guy to want to be a girl and vice versa. It's nothing I'd want to see and I don't understand why anyone would want to see it.

You can kiss as my dude's as you want to that doesn't mean I'm going to sit there and watch it go down. If funny how you know you're behavior is outside of social views and norms and ideology yet somehow I'm this asshole for thinking it's weird. I see I love your logic.

I don't think it's prejudice in the least. There's things you want to see and things you don't want to see. Also it's not a story with transexuals in it it's a story about transexuals. I have no interest whatsoever in watching a story about a guy that wants to be a girl and vice versa. I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to see a story about that. If you're a transexual/question your sexuality and this that and whatever and you connect with the characters then that's you. Not me don't force such non sense on me.
Basically there's no way around it. The more you talk on this subject, the more you're just going to unravel and reveal what a completely disgusting being you are, whether or not you fully understand so. But you don't have to be.
I'm disugisting because I don't want to watch an anime about transexual's? Whatever floats your boat.

I know what they mean and I know what they don't mean. I know what it means to be a man. I don't know what it means to be a girl or a man that wants to be a girl nor do I have any interest in watching a show about anything of that nature. If you have a problem with that then that's fine. I don't see how any different for people knocking any of the other shows that's been knocked this season.
-
I'm disugisting because I don't want to watch an anime about transexual's?
you're disgusting because of your blind ignorance and baseless prejudices
they disturb and repulse me
If funny how you know you're behavior is outside of social views and norms and ideology yet somehow I'm this asshole for thinking it's weird. I see I love your logic.
god i hope you're trolling
-
I was going to write an educational post about sexuality and gender identity but I can't bring myself to do it, since I feel like it'd be a waste of both of ours times. So instead I'm just going to lay down some bare bones statements here:
It's weird for a guy to want to be a girl and vice versa. It's nothing I'd want to see and I don't understand why anyone would want to see it.
You clearly have no understanding of gender identity, so why do you seem to be so strongly sure that it's "weird"? What basis have you for this conclusion? Where is it derived from?
By saying you don't know why anybody would want to see it, you are excluding the ideas completely. If you won't even consider them and what they might mean, what right have you to judge?
You can kiss as my dude's as you want to that doesn't mean I'm going to sit there and watch it go down. If funny how you know you're behavior is outside of social views and norms and ideology yet somehow I'm this asshole for thinking it's weird. I see I love your logic.
You know nothing about what the words "norms" mean, or imply, and you're an ignorant and privileged scumbag. You have absolutely no idea where the bases are for gender roles in society and how things like this have developed to be the way they are.
The sole reason you are saying anything is because you have been taught at an early age that men behave certain ways and have specific ideals and the same goes for women. You have developed this incredibly false and dangerous dichotomy in your world view.
If I was to ask you why any of this is weird, your sole response here is simply "just because it is!"
I don't think it's prejudice in the least.
It absolutely is. You are closeminded. You want nothing to do with things that don't tie into your sexual and gender identity, which is creating an exclusive world view. This is the thinking that leads directly to hate crimes in the long run! Choo choo!
This entire statement is purely and simply absolute douchebagginess at its core.
You are the lowest of the low.
I'm disugisting because I don't want to watch an anime about transexual's? Whatever floats your boat.
You're disgusting because you have idiotic world views.
-
AlmostLegendary, I honestly hope you're just looking for a fight and trolling hard. There cannot possibly be someone who posses as low of intellectual endowments as you do. Either you give an honest review of an anime, while keeping your horribly ignorant and boorish opinions of the subject matter to yourself. Or you can just skip over it entirely and save yourself from looking like a inclusive jackass to all those who waste time gawking at your posts here.
-
If funny how you know you're behavior is outside of social views and norms and ideology yet somehow I'm this asshole for thinking it's weird. I see I love your logic.
I'm going to assume that that if was supposed to be it's and continue from there.
His behavior is not outside of social views (whatever that means, being outside of views?) or any modern ideology.
It seems that you haven't quite realized that you live in the 21st century.
You're the one that is outside social norms, the average normal educated adult knows that some people don't feel comfortable with the biological condition they were born in. So they seek something else.
Don't ever try to make it sound like you're views are the normal ones again!
I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to see a story about that.
Because the story is interesting and deals with things that aren't often used in popular media.
It's a breath of fresh air.
Oh, and it's transsexual.
-
Um, what exactly is going on here?
Malcom doesn't want to watch Hourou Musuko, and HH takes it as a personal insult? Why?
-
Maybe you should actually examine what his implications are and the actual statements he is making.
This isn't about his not wanting to watch Hourou Musuko. This is about the stupid shit he's saying as justification.
I already said it's not "I don't want to watch Hourou Musuko". It's "I don't want to watch Hourou Musuko HERE HAVE SOME STUPID OUTLOOKS"
-
Um, what exactly is going on here?
Malcom doesn't want to watch Hourou Musuko, and HH takes it as a personal insult? Why?
Have you even read the argument?

Yall taste in anime seems pretty weird to me. How can you find an anime about transsexuals to be appealing?
Why you say? He asked a question. He got answers.
-
Um, what exactly is going on here?
Malcom doesn't want to watch Hourou Musuko, and HH takes it as a personal insult? Why?
I think because I called people weird for like it and said I don't want to watch a show about transexuals.
just a side question. I no longer want to listen to rap that uses the nword does that make me prejudice ?
-
That is the dumbest and most unrelated analogy.
-
Um, what exactly is going on here?
Malcom doesn't want to watch Hourou Musuko, and HH takes it as a personal insult? Why?
It's probably best to stay out of this one.
-
Technically, it is weird. Not saying bad (because it really isn't), but it isn't normal. WHy and how it isn't normal isn't really important in that debate. Do most guys want to be women? No. Thus its weird. Don't see how saying that something which isn't normal isn't normal is such a horrible thing. Also, while it certainly isn't a good thing, I'm pretty sure that history and such has shown us time and again that the average educated adult is still a prejudiced asshole who can't accept other viewpoints
