I'd have to say that Nami and Zoro probably have the best (and what feels natural) voice for any of the straw hats. When I read their lines in the comic, I hear the Funimation's version.
Dub voices, Japanese Voices, and other things.

This is hard. I like all of them. In terms of the dub, Zoro is just freakin' badarse, and his 'angry' delivery is just priceless sometimes. Chopper sounds sweet and childlike ('What's a sacrifice'? d'awww..), while Robin- as someone pointed out earlier- sounds more 'femme fatale' than her Japanese counterpart (another way for me to say 'badass', only with a hint of darkness that we know and love) which is what she's supposed to look AND sound like.
And don't get me started on J Michael Tatum's Eneru. He has the EXACT SAME LAUGH as the original, and the voice is smooth, arrogant and controlled yet psychopathic. All-round win.
The only thing that gets me sometimes is the Japanese Luffy. His 'shit's getting real' scream… isn't quite 'crazed' enough for my ears. Colleen's, on the other hand, actually makes it sound like his throat is hurting. May not be intentional, but it just fits 'all-out Luffy' like a glove.
Mrrr, the whole 'Ussop sounds like Krillin' thing doesn't work as a criticism. Okay, if an actor has the same voice for EVERYTHING they do, I suppose to an extent that's a criticism of the actor. But what we're doing here is discussing the actor's suitability for a role, not whether or not so and so really has enough vocal range.
I've seen this criticism (if you can call it that) a LOT on Youtube comments, and it's getting rather tiring… Jason Griffiths is far, far worse for this. It doesn't just sound like a goofy version of his Sonic, it's completely. and. utterly. out of control to boot. Strait on the other hand, retains the goofy nature, but he has an iron-grip over his voice control. Especially when things get serious.
-
I gotta agree with you on Sonny. This is the reason why I'm really looking forward to Water 7 dubbed, because that'll be mostly "serious Usopp" and I love the way he makes him sound when he's serious. I think he should incorporate some of his Hughes voice into Usopp for some of those W7 scenes.
-
Sorry, but no.
Strait also plays Bardock.
I didn't know that until Kai came out and someone told me.
He also plays Maes Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist. You have to pay attention to, only the parts where he gets really happy about his daughter to hear even a hint of his Usopp peak through.
He's also Lupin III in FUNimation's Lupin Movies.
His Lupin has pretty much none of the Rasp he puts into Kuririn and sounds much more sly.As for His Usopp, the change between Kuririn and Usopp for Sonny can pretty much be directly compared to Tanaka going from Kuririn to Luffy.
It's the same voice, you can hear it. But there is a completely different energy brought to the character. He goes a less raspier as Kuririn , and Kuririn is often… a good word would be subdued. Yes, he gets silly sometimes, but is mostly more brave and less prone to going "WACKY" which he does with Usopp quite readily.
It's more subdued and less silly, but very CLEARLY the same voice, ESPECIALLY when she screams in surprise, because that's more expressive. Find a scene in One Piece where Tanaka is being serious as Luffy, and they sound Identical.
at the end.I watched One Piece in Japanese first, and was floored. THAT is Kuririn, it's pretty much the exact same voice. Luffy ACTS sillier than Kuririn, so often she does more goofy things with the voice, because the woman can act, but catch Luffy in a more serious situation, and it's the Same Exact Voice. It's still amazing voices for each character, but I DID have to get used to it.
Now,
And
See, more subdued. the first one is a serious scene, but as the second clip shows, he's pretty much always like that in comparison to his Usopp. Now,
.
He's always got a goofiness, with higher energy there
when he's Usopp.
Just like Tanaka, you can hear his , but there's a twinge of silliness left in there that his Kuririn doesn't have. Why don't you notice it with Tanaka? Maybe because you watch the Japanese version with subtitles, so your attention isn't fully on the voices? But it's there. Same with Nozawa's Kureha. The voices are so similar that Daizenshuu EX used One Piece clips to make their "Fake Dragon Ball AF" Trailer.
Son Goku always spoke in this trailer using Kureha clips and Kuririn always spoke using Luffy clips. They fooled a LOT of people. (Videos were taken down due to Toei cracking down)
The point is, yes, those actors do sound similar in their portrayals of the characters. The Usopp-Kuririn situation with Sonny can be directly compared to Luffy-Kuririn for Tanaka. But that doesn't mean anyone is "Bad" for their role.
To say that "Using the same actor who sounds the same for one big franchise on another big franchise is silly" is like… well
Mel Gibson is Both Mad Max AND Sgt. Riggs from Lethal Weapon...
And Harrison Ford is both Han Solo AND Indiana Jones... Han came first, then Indy... Yes, he still sounds like himself and still acts like a smooth motherfucker... but I love Han and I Love Indy... the fact that it's the same guy doesn't cheapen that at all.Demon Rin, your too awesome. lol
Seriously, there really is no arguing with this post. If RobbyBevard still doesn't agree, I think we should just leave him be. It seems to me that there is no logical reason for why he dislikes Sonny as Ussop. He's either stubborn, trolling, or doesn't like to lose an argument. No offense Robby. I'm just calling it the way I see it and everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
-
of course, robert's a troll
-
I like that people keep bringing up other roles where Sonny Straight doesn't sound at all like Krillin, where I had no idea it was him, that prove he has decent range, as a DEFENSE of his Usopp voice, which sounds just like Krillin.
Especially when I clarified my stance on the matter a MONTH ago. Before Demon Rin's essay.
@RobbyBevard:
I'm just not hearing the distinction. They're just too similar to me, in that way too distinct a sound of voice.
See, there you have me. I had NO IDEA that he was also Bardock. Completely different voice and take, I never would have guessed it was the same guy. Being the same actor there isn't distracting AT ALL.
Which really, just makes its worse that his Usopp and Krillin are so similar.
@RobbyBevard:
Because its such a DISTINCT reused voice, it throws me off consistently.
Kinda like Leonardo the ninja turtle being the same voice as Kaneda in Akira.
Not every voice being the same as another voice bothers me. Even the super talented VAs only have so many voices and they do a ton of roles and there's going to be some overlap. But when its such a distinctive long running voice that was attached to a particular character for years and years, then showing up on someone else… its really jarring.
A throwaway background character they did the voice for in 3 episodes of one show, going on to be a main character in another? That's different. But an incredibly long running 400 episode, 10 year character, rolling right over into another 400 episode, 10 year character?
-
now, robert, suck it up and be a man about your tendencies
-
I get what Rupert is saying; tbh he does sound a bit like Krillin, but it's still a great dub of Usopp. I don't find it distracting at all though. Also I think in general Krillin's more serious or solemn than Usopp who is like constantly fooling around/screaming more.
-

My point was, Everyone does the exact same thing.
Tanaka uses a DISTINCT voice as BOTH Kuririn and Luffy.
Luffy sounds like a happier and sillier Kuririn, but he still sounds exactly like Kuririn.
Zoro sounds like Mugen from Samurai Champloo. It's the exact same voice. Mugen is MAYBE a little lazier… (if you can believe Zoro could sound Lazier) but it's the same voice.Hiroaki Hirata, Sanji, sounds exactly like Pip from Hellsing and Jack Sparrow from the Japanese dub of Pirates of the Caribbean and Kingdom Hearts II.
Kappei Yamaguchi's Usopp sounds a lot like a Sillier version of His Ranma, catch Ramna during a silly moment, it's a dead Ringer.
Ikue Ohtani sounds exactly like most of her Roles. Pikachu sounds like Chopper recorded an album about Pokemon and it kept skipping on the word "Pikachu". And, if you've ever watched Detective Conan, a series that started before One Piece and is quite a bit Longer, and VERY well known in Japan now, she plays Mitsuhiko, one of the main characters, it sounds EXACTLY like her Chopper voice. No concessions even have to be made.
Robin sounds exactly like Ritsuko from Evangelion. It's the exact same voice. She was ICONIC as Ritsuko, Eva is sometimes called the "Star Wars of Anime", and is treated like the holy grail of anime series' by some. She is VERY known for her Ritsuko Voice.
Franky sounds exactly like Jango. He's gotten to be more expressive with Franky, but it's the same exact voice. Also He really Gay's up Bon Kurei, but it is still VERY clearly the same man. If we ever see a moment where Bon Chan and the current Straw Hats meet up, there is going to be a REALLY awkward moment where Yao is talking to himself and it will be REALLY goddamn obvious.
Toshio Furukawa's Ace is his Piccolo Voice, pretty much to a T he's a little more of a "Punk" as Ace, but it's the same voice. Right down to the good ole "Kkkch" sound that all the Dragon Ball characters make.
Kureha sounds Almost the same as Son Goku, so close in fact that Daizenshuu EX was able to trick a huge amount of the Dragon Ball Fanbase into thinking the Kureha voice clips were Goku in "Dragon Ball AF".Decrying one voice in the dub for something, pretty much the entire Straw Hat Pirate Crew in the Japanese version does QUITE readily is just... odd...
I don't watch Dragon Ball in English, I watch it in Japanese. So I've never 'Gotten Used' to his Kuririn, so I don't know him that way at all. So, when I watch the One Piece dub, I don't hear him "Reusing his Kuririn Voice", I hear him using a voice I think REALLY fits Usopp Well.
Meanwhile, when I watched One Piece in Japanese, I had to get used to Tanaka Reusing her Kuririn Voice with Luffy... so, yeah...
-
You didn't watch dub Dragonball, so it doesn't register that way for you.
But you apparently have the exact same problem as I do, in reverse, with the Japanese actors.
I don't see where the confusion is.
-
@RobbyBevard:

The thing is, it's not a "Problem".
It's the same Actress, so I go into it knowing she's going to sound similar. It's an adjustment that has to be made, which is typical in most situations where you REALLY know an actor for one thing and then he does another.
I had to get used to Han Solo being Indiana Jones, but that didn't stop me from thinking his Indy was awesome.
-
You bring up Harison Ford being both Han Solo and Indiana Jones. But that only works because he went to the other role so quickly, so he wasn't stuck as the character. If he'd done just Han for 9 years and never anything else, no one would have accepted it. Mark Hammil never escaped Luke Skywalker, until he became Joker. Leonard Nimoy never escaped being Spock. Jaleel White wasn't anything like Steve Urkel, but he hasn't gotten work since Urkel. Jonny Depp and Daniel Day-Lewis are chameleons who are completely different in voice, accent, performance and look in every role they plays, and it sometimes takes a while to realize its them. It doesn't matter what character Jackie Chan is playing in any movie, nobody ever remembers the character name, he's just Jackie Chan.
I have no problem with actors taking on multiple roles, or a VA reusing a voice.
But when there's one specific character they do for a for a long time, thats very distinctive or iconic, and you're exposed to that specific performance for a very long time, (especially with long running tv series) it stands out and that mental association is hard to get over.
They may have gotten more work and played different characters, but you see them, or you hear them, and you instantly think of that one performance. Its typecasting, and it hits some actors worse than others. But thats how recognition works.
-
Robby I think we all get what your trying to say. We're just telling you that your being silly and that you shouldn't let something like this keep you from enjoying the dub. I honestly do understand where your coming from because I had the same problem with Sonny's Ussop, It sounded exactly like Krillin. But you know what? I got over it and you know why? Because that voice fits the character so well. In fact it fits so well that I no longer hear that voice and think Krillin, I think Ussop. And this is coming from someone who grew up with funimation's dbz dub.
-
I love most of the funi dub voices but i'm still trying to warm up to chris sabat's zoro. Its hard accepting a guy who does the voice of almost every character in Funi dubs and then try to ignore that fact when you're listening to zoro in the dub. Its like the guy doesn't know how to change his voice up.
-
I could say the same thing about Japanese actors luffy and krillin sound really close. Its a little change up but you can still tell its there
-
I guess I really am one of the few people that actually really like the fact that characters from different shows share the same voice? :ermm: Why does it seem like people argue about this more than Luffy and Goku having similar personalities, or am I missing something?
Toshio Furukawa's Ace is his Piccolo Voice, pretty much to a T he's a little more of a "Punk" as Ace, but it's the same voice. Right down to the good ole "Kkkch" sound that all the Dragon Ball characters make.
Oh yes, the annoying loogie hocking.
-
^ I never understood why they did that. It was so annoying and one of the reasons I couldn't enjoy dbz in Japanese. >_<
-
Even though Ussop sounds like Krillin, I think Funi was right to use Strait as his tone of voice can be very similar to the original actor at times, I mean, listen to Usopp's part in this mix I made months ago:
TSf8srBtx9M
It almost sounds like one actor switched between singing in two different languages.
-
I don't really care that Usopp sounds like Krillin, but I don't like the voice for Usopp, to be honest. Maybe I'm just used to the German one.
In general I can't say I love the Funi voices. My favorite Straw Hat voice would probably be Sanji's voice, my least favorite Luffy's.
In general, while I know the Funi actors are probably better, I prefer the German voices. The Japanese ones, too, but I think they are better in both regards.
-
I like the opening song english version better, even though I prefer the voices in japanese. I really don't get it why such a fuss over Luffys voice. It fits his caracter perfectly, at least in my opinion, while the funi luffy voice is a little more childish, and a little forced don't you think. I mean it's kinda raspy-do kids usually have that kind off voice, (sorry dont mean to insult or anything just my opinion).
I think that the english voices for villains are really good, but I can't really compare the two; they're both good and fit the caracters realy well. XD
But the most annoying dub voice, which made me go back to subs is chopers, it just doesn't fit him, and the screaming is really horrible for the ears.
oh, and I don't like how they pronounce the japanese words and names in english
-
Anyone prefer Mihawk's former VA (Takeshi Aono) ? I do
I think there was an elegance and charisma that the current voice lacks.
-
Luffy: Japanese VA. I like both but I just think the Japanese suits him better.
Zoro: English. I don't hate the Japanese VA, it just sounds too old for him.
Nami: Tie. I like both voices equally
Usopp: Japanese. The English VA isn't bad but sounds clownish to me at times. (Though no where NEAR as bad as the 4Kids)
Sanji: English. I'm biased but his English VA sounds sexy
Chopper: Tie. I honestly can't tell the difference between the two.
Vivi: English. I thought it fit her better than the Japanese
Robin: English. I love her English VA
Ace: Japanese. His English VA isn't bad, I just do not think it suits him at all. In fact, I cringed everytime he spoke in the funi dub.
Crocodial: Japanese
Buggy: Japanese. I just heard Vegeta in the English.
Enel: English
-
@RobbyBevard:
Jaleel White wasn't anything like Steve Urkel, but he hasn't gotten work since Urkel.
Unless we forget "Sonic Underground" where he did three main characters
PS: I always wondered how you spell his first name.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Luffy: Japanese VA. I like both but I just think the Japanese suits him better.
You just have to get past the fact it's an old lady.
In fact one of the few good things I can say so far about the FT anime is that Natsu is done by a guy, which I was totaly not expecting.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Anyone prefer Mihawk's former VA (Takeshi Aono) ? I do
I think there was an elegance and charisma that the current voice lacks.
His voice was also much deeper, this new Mihawk sounds a bit too young in my opinion.
And of course, the original Jinbei was far superior to the one we have now, his voice just sounds too barky. I know the original voice actor commited suicide, but it would have been nice to get at least a few more eps with him.
-
I can't stand Chopper's dub voice. It is literally painful to listen to at times.
Luffy's voice is fitting, but I prefer the Japanese over English. But there is no arguing that the English Enel is amazing! A great VA choice.
-
Usopp: Japanese. The English VA isn't bad but sounds clownish to me at times.
Well, Usopp IS kind of a clown.
Buggy: Japanese. I just heard Vegeta in the English.
What? Vegeta's voice is much deeper. They're not even voiced by the same person.
-
Buggy: Japanese. I just heard Vegeta in the English.
The English VA voiced Master Roshi but not Vegeta…Zoro voiced Vegeta (and a bunch of other characters) in Dragon Ball.
-
In general I think both the English and Japanese voice actors in One Piece do a great job. However, one moment that really shocked me was when I heard Crocodile's voice in English for the first time. It's not necessarily bad, but I found it to be such a jump from his Japanese voice that it made it hard to enjoy.
-

To be fair, you can't really match up with Crocodile's Japanese VA considering his voice is that naturally low.
-
@No:
You just have to get past the fact it's an old lady.
Yeah and that doesn't bother me at all nor has it ever.
As for Buggy sounding like Vegeta. Sorry that's just what I thought when I heard the voice. Doesn't matter if the voice actors weren't the same it still sounded like Vegeta, at least one of his voices. My friend thought the same.
-
John Swasey's Crocodile unfortunately reminded me way too much of Mike Pollock's Eggman, and while I have nothing against Pollock's Eggman, never under any circumstances should Crocodile remind me of him.
-
I have no idea who will voice Law in the english dub when they finally get to it, but I fear it might be Derek Stephen Prince. he's an awesome VA but still… wouldn't mind Johnny Young Bosch.
As for the jap voice? I just love that Hiroshi Kamiya also voices Mephisto and Izaya...
they're all so similar (and ferkin smexy hohohohon~) -
I do believe I prefer the original japanese voices over the Funimation dub, not that I have anything against the dub, I haven't seen alot of it but enough to know that I like all of the voices for the strawhats. All of them are doing a terrific job so far, I just happen to prefer the japanese ones.
-
I enjoy both versions, but I'm watching the Japanese version over the English version now simply because of one simple reason - they're ahead. XD I'm reading the manga, too, but yeah. I don't really have a preference. The show was made with the Japanese cast in mind, so obviously, there'd be areas where it excels the English version. But, the English version does very good work too. Heck, there's a handful of voices that I prefer over to the Japanese version.
John Swasey's Crocodile unfortunately reminded me way too much of Mike Pollock's Eggman, and while I have nothing against Pollock's Eggman, never under any circumstances should Crocodile remind me of him.
Huh. No wonder why it didn't feel right…and I love Pollock's Eggman. >.>;

Sorry for the bump, but since I had a similar idea for a thread (only it involved sub voices only) and I still don't quite feel up to posting a thread for the first time, I'll just post here…
First off, I have to say that I was taken aback when I read that Mugen's Japanese VA is also Zoro's VA. I honestly did not have a clue, and Mugen is my favorite anime character ever (granted, I prefer his dub voice, so that might factor into it). Still, his Mugen voice is very distinct and I had no trouble spotting it in "Harisen-sensei" when watching Nodame Cantabile. I'll have to listen a bit more carefully next time I hear Zoro to see if I can distinguish it, because he goes a lot deeper for Zoro than he ever did for Mugen, despite the characters being the same age (pre-time skip)...
About the whole FUNi Usopp and Krillin debacle. Yes, they sound pretty much the same, but since it's been so long since I've watched DBZ frequently, I don't mind it. Some actors are just going to have the same voice for some characters. It mostly depends on the character being played. For example, listen to Steven Blum as Spike in Cowboy Bebop and then listen to him as Mugen in Samurai Champloo—he uses the exact same voice. It fits, though, because both characters are portrayed as cocky badasses who are great at what they do. I mostly don't mind actors using the same voices for some characters, except with Johnny Bosch, who sounds exactly the same in every single role I've heard him in (except Renton from E7). Then again, this is pretty off-topic, but I just wanted to comment on it...
As for the actual topic:
Luffy: I prefer his sub voice, and I started on the dub before running out of episodes and moving on to the sub. Coleen is a good Luffy, but her portrayal is just way too raspy for my tastes.
Zoro: I think this one is a tie. When I first heard the dub voice, I thought it sounded way too deep, but I've gotten accustomed to it now. Zoro's sub voice is definitely a bit less serious, and I appreciate that.
Nami: Again, a tie. Though, the one scene where I did think the dub surpassed the sub was the stabbing scene. I still cringe whenever I watch it (because of the impact). Also, I enjoy panicked/scared Nami a bit more in the dub.
Usopp: A tie once again. At first, when transitioning from dub to sub, I felt that Usopp's voice sounded a bit too high, but now I enjoy it a lot.
Sanji: I think the dub slightly edges out the sub for me with Sanji. Especially since Sanji's antics over women in the sub give him a heightened air of buffoonery compared to the dub, at least in my opinion. Dub Sanji definitely sounds more like the ladies' man he believes himself to be, as opposed to sub Sanji.
Chopper: No contest, the original voice actor wins. Dub Chopper sounds too feminine and, as others have already said, his screaming is pretty hard to bear.
Robin: Definitely the dub, where her voice actor makes her sound more conniving and confident. I still love sub Robin, though.
Vivi: I loved Vivi in the dub, and I still prefer her over the original, even after watching Movie 8. It didn't even bother me that she sounded exactly like Winry from FMA.
Franky: Granted, Patrick Seitz hasn't really had his chance to show us what he's got (what I heard from the game sounded really off, though), but I love Mr. Yao's Franky in the sub, so I doubt he'll be toppled. Isshin Kurosaki is the wackiest I've heard Seitz go, and it doesn't come anywhere near Franky's SUPER-wackiness. I'm sure I'll still enjoy his take on Franky, though.
Buggy: I enjoyed Buggy a lot in the dub. I thought he sounded like a less serious Mayuri Kurotsuchi. After watching Impel Down in the anime, though, sub Buggy wins.
Arlong: Definitely the dub version. His laugh has a more mocking tone than in the sub, especially in the scene where he's denying having lied to Nami. I wanted to smash his face in.
Crocodile: Sub, for sure. It sounds so deep and powerful that it's impossible to match. Plus, when I first read the Alabasta arc, I kept imagining that Crocodile would sound like Kenpachi Zaraki from the Bleach dub, and when he didn't, I was disappointed. Both characters have the same air, almost identical builds and their fighting capabilities are clearly leagues beyond the main character when first encountered. Oh, well, can't always get what you want.
Eneru: The dub voice was perfect, and I've only heard the sub voice in a clip or two, so I'll go with the dub.
Bon-chan: I thought the dub did a decent job with Bon-chan, but there's just no beating Mr. Yao. Granted, he does sound like a more flamboyant version of Franky, but there's enough of a difference for the character to really stand out. Damn, I hope Bon-chan makes another comeback someday (as the final crew mate, too).
Galdino: I had to include him here, because after hearing him in the sub, he's become one of my favorite characters. The dub was nothing special, but the sub just shot him up my list of favorite voices.Whew, long post…
-
I have no idea who will voice Law in the english dub when they finally get to it, but I fear it might be Derek Stephen Prince. he's an awesome VA but still… wouldn't mind Johnny Young Bosch.
How? They're both normally CA actors, not TX; I know Bosch has been in a few Funi dubs, but Prince has never been in any. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about…
-

Actually he's done one very small role in ep. 43 of D.Gray-man
As for the sub vs dub, I am a bigger fan of the dub myself. I might be one of a few who actually prefers Colleens version of Luffy over Mayumi Tanaka's. Both Chris and Kazuya as Zoro are just fucking awesome .
Looking forward to seeing how Jason Liebrecht plays Rob Lucci & Sonny Strait plays Sogeking
-

I think the only reason my mind thinks Bosch would be good for the role is cause obv Hiroshi Kamiya voiced both Izaya and Law, so… and Bosch voices Izaya...
SLAP MY MIIINNNDDDD.
Though.
Deep down.
I have a feeling Vic Mignogna will end up nabbing one of the Supernova rolls...
Surprisingly he'd be pretty good as Law since he can do the deepish voice, but tbh I think he's be good as Apoo... that might just be me...
though I woudn't mind Tatum coming back and playing a role of another character, he's awesome ;D -
Personally, I don't think Bosch would fit Law. Then again, I'd rather not hear Bosh voice any OP characters period, but that's just me being very burned out on his voice from hearing it so much while I still had [adult swim] (Ichigo, Ledouche, etc.)…
-
Bosch voiced Renton in Eureka 7, right? I thought he was pretty good…
-
Out of curiosity, are there any voice demos for auditions for the part of English Luffy? I wonder if any male actors were considered. Or would the fanbase have flipped out had they chose a male for the part?
So far the only thing I don't care for in the English dub is the harshness of screaming. Mainly from Luffy and Chopper. It's wince inducing sometimes. I think it's not so much the actors as the audio engineering's fault. -
I'd honestly have preferred they had gotten a guy to do it.
-
Out of curiosity, are there any voice demos for auditions for the part of English Luffy? I wonder if any male actors were considered. Or would the fanbase have flipped out had they chose a male for the part?
Vic has said that he auditioned for the roles of Luffy and Usopp. When he was asked to do his interpretation he declined out of respect for Colleen and Sonny, who he felt did the characters better than he could have. I also know Brina Palencia (Chopper) auditioned for Luffy. I remember reading that Oda said Luffy shouldn't be voiced by a guy, even in the dub.
To be honest, I prefer Colleen's Luffy to Mayumi's (even though the Japan cast was my first exposure to OP)…I'm glad he didn't end up being voiced by a guy or anything.
-
I'm not against the concept of a guy doing Luffy, I mean, a Guy does him in Defeat the Pirate Ganzack! by Production I.G. While it felt a little off (what with me being used to hearing Tanaka as Japanese Luffy) the fact that the voice was male wasn't what made it sound odd.
I personally think Tanaka is outstanding as Luffy, really irreplaceable, shes one of those greats of the Japanese VA community. (Even if I had to get used to Kuririn's Voice coming out of Luffy at first, it doesn't make her any less perfect for the role)
Colleen as Luffy is pretty much exactly how I see Luffy speaking in English now, I can, in no way, picture another voice coming out of Luffy in English anymore.
When FUNi says that Oda got the final audition tapes to make the final call, I believe them, because all the Straw Hats are pretty much perfect in English. -
Actually it was a woman in the OVA. Seems even Production IG felt Luffy should be voiced by a female.
Only time I've heard Luffy done by a guy is the horrible English Singapore dub by Odex, and what little I've heard of the German dub.
-
Let's be honest, nobody ever believed for a second that Tanaka sounds anything like an actual seventeen year old male. Or Clinkenbeard for that matter. Still, I guess both voices they use work for his character. I won't say that I'm all for a man voicing him, but I'll only support the notion once I hear a guy actually do a good job as him.
-

Are you sure?… whoa, ok, apparently I'm wrong... haven't seen that OVA in a long LONG time... what am I remembering male Luffy from?... was it the Universal Studios Waterworld One Piece thing?...
-
Bosch voiced Renton in Eureka 7, right? I thought he was pretty good…
That's one of the few roles of his that I've liked. He managed to make his voice sound different from his other roles…
I also would've liked for Luffy to have been voiced by a male actor. At 17, his voice shouldn't be that cracky. Aside from that minor gripe, Colleen does a good job, though. After all, I wasn't in any big hurry to switch to the sub until after I ran out of dubbed episodes...

I love the Funimation dub. The actors really nail the personality of the characters. Buggy to me sounds kinda like Mark Hamill's Joker, which I think is awesome. The sub does a great job too, but as I don't speak Japanese, I can't really make a valid assessment on them.

Great find on Japanese VA.
One of them voices a One Piece character. Can you guess(unless you are already aware of his name) ? -
I love the funimation voice actors. I think in terms of Vic Mignogna getting a voice I saw a video where he stated that he heard there was a skeleton that sings in one piece so I think its safe to say that Brook would probably end up being Vic.
