I wonder what will happen… with one piece and many other mangas
Anti pedophilia law may affect all manga
-
-
so who do you think will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! their material to say "suck it" to this bill like the main editor or whatever guy said.
I mean are we going to be seeing a ton of skimpy mermaids, a ton of skimpy ninja's, a ton of skimpa hollows, a ton of skimpy "insert manga here".
Are some going to go the extra mile like kenichi and all of a sudden be showing 'actual' nudity and not the convenient censoring. are those already like kenichi going to go more extreme?
or will it be the opposite and many will be scared and pull back?
or just do what tehy were going to anyway and pretend thsi bill don't exist
-
So you're saying banning it in fiction is tolerated???
Have you ever rad Berserk? Black Lagoon? Any shoujo manga?
Seriously?
Rape has been a strong theme in human history and nature as a tragedy, and used well in fiction for a plot device.
You're gonna simply put a lid on it and pretend it doesn't happen because it's "eeew gross", and restrict creative thinking? What the hell? You're thinking like a close-minded soccer mom.
I think you're misunderstanding me. If it has rape in it I don't care, if it portrays rape as a good thing get rid of it.
I've read plenty of shojo manga and I have seen very little depiction of rape being a good thing. The only one I've heard of is Hot Gimmick and it's a disgusting manga that glorifies an abusive relationship. I would not miss it if it got taken off the shelves, or had an 18+ sticker on it.
If it depicts rape as a tragedy I have no problem with it. It's glorifying it that I have a problem with.
Putting PG13 stuff into X rated is ridiculous, I agree, but I don't want to see a 14 year old girl being sexualized in a manga because that's just fucking wrong.
-
Is this bill going to affect a shoujo Manga like Kaichou wa Maid-Sama? Theres no sex or rape in that manga, but it does depict romance among minors (18-).
If it does I'd be sad… very sad :( -
Banning the depiction of rape as a good thing (unless it's hentai) doesn't bother me at all. Honestly depicting rape as a good thing is just… well I can't begin to describe what you're expecting me to tolerate. Depicting it as a good thing is just disgusting, especially if minors are going to read it. As long as it's labeled as porn it can go, only idiots think that things that happen in porn = reality.
I'm still unconvinced that the bill itself is bad. It definitely needs an overhaul, but I'm not opposed to regulations.
Also you can't really regulate porn because it's well... porn. There's no way to regulate it aside from making sure the actors get STD testing and so forth, and to be honest I'm against it.The problem with the law, as far as I can see it, is that it's Way too vague as to exactly what is bad and what is good. It's gonna dampen the ability to be free in your expression.
Read my examples from Hellsing. Aohige is in the country and is privy to the most information on it, and even he wasn't sure if Hellsing would get retroactively pulled from the market/censored because of this.
It's that kinda stuff that makes this terrible.
-
I wonder what will happen… with one piece and many other mangas
It wouldn't affect One Piece, it never had these themes to begin with.
In fact, most of Weekly Shounen Jump wouldn't be affected by it.
Back in the old days like when Cobra was running, it may have been a problem. What does get fucked is Young Jump, Business Jump, Ultra Jump, and Jump SQ.
Any of those magazines can easily become target for this ban.I think you're misunderstanding me. If it has rape in it I don't care, if it portrays rape as a good thing get rid of it.

Oh, and who decides if it's showing it in negative enough light, using this extremely ambiguous bill that does nothing to clearly define it?
Oh yeah.the same people who hates manga and anime, and have already publicly commented so. Gee.
Yeah, let's trust their judgment like a blind fool!Or…. let's not.
-
You're thinking like a close-minded soccer mom.
This.
I mean, I've had Inyouchuu shoved in my face.
It made me want to vomit, and I still shudder whenever I come across something like it.
But you don't hear me going "WELL IT SHOULD BE BANNED BECAUSE IM DUN LIKE IT."
Ugh.

I doubt they intent to apply the law equally and in every case, they should have to halt to a stop 90% of manga and anime production.
I guess politicians are trying to clean somehow the public image of the country, but I don't think they'll dare to go against their own economy.
In the end some random series are going to be cancelled as "public example" and that would be all (which is something sad and unfair, but nothing big after all)

yea i hate the people who want stuff banned that they find repulsive or whatever. How hard is it to NOT look at it. Its not like your forced to read it.
And especially when the government gets involved, they never know when to quit and just one step at a time until soon they are in control of the manga industry completely.
-
I don't care for fanservice or hentai or whatever it is, I just don't want to see minors sexualized like they are in many manga. I don't want to see rape portrayed as a good thing because for me that's no different than portraying the KKK as a good organization and then handing that shit out to minors.
The bill needs revising, hell I understand that the whole backing is just manga-hating hypocritical, but I don't see anything wrong with some regulation on the depiction of minors.
-

Of course not, that would be economic suicide.
They're gonna make examples out of few of them, and not ban everything. The problem with this type of scare-tactic is, you don't know WHO they're gonna go after, and many of them will simply give-in to these threats and self-censor themselves.
That's the whole point of these types of laws.
@Mr.333:
Aohige, Could Deadman Wonderland be affected by this?
I haven't read enough of Deadman Wonderland, but from what I've seen of it, it's clearly a target for this type of censorship.
And it running in a shounen magazine makes it even more of a target.
Mirai Nikki is another good candidate as well.Monthly Shounen Ace is kinda screwed.
-
Can't the law just get retracted though? I don't know much about Japanese laws & politics, but over here in America, Proposition 8 was passed into law 2 years ago and now look where it's at. Being pulled back into the courtroom. Couldn't the same be done here?
-
Well, you can be sure they are not going after the big and profitable series (they'll had to battle against an army of lawyers in the courts)
They'll go for the weak and small, like usual.
-

American Supreme Court is a hundred times more capable and reasonable than Japanese judicial systems.
Then again, this is a Tokyo-only law, so if no one follows suit and they get slapped in the face from federal, they could retract it.

Many of the titles that came up in this thread are small enough to be made an example, you know.
-
@Mr.333:
Aohige, Could Deadman Wonderland be affected by this?
Most definitely, especially with the ladies fawning over mistore woodpecker.
-
The only seinen series that I read are Black Lagoon, Deadman Wonderland, and Bloody Monday II, and they're all ongoing…....
   :cwy: :cwy: :cwy:

More like a thousand, but yeah. It's one of the things that Americans really got RIGHT.
Then again, this is a Tokyo-only law, so if no one follows suit and they get slapped in the face from federal, they could retract it.
I so hope for this, you have no idea.

Sorry, buddy. You're screwed.
"Shinichi-chan read those horrid manga and became a gun-toting, blood fetishist terrorist!"
-
Many of the titles that came up in this thread are small enough to be made an example, you know.
Having been following it, frankly. I thought this law was only against loli content and now I found it also goes against violence and gore (and now I'm getting worried, since most of the mangas I follow are quite graphical)
-
Most definitely, especially with the ladies fawning over mistore woodpecker.
GOD DAMN IT!
That was only one or two more volumes away from being completed! And it's getting to the final battle (Woodpecker vs. Red Man/Shiro) right now! Dear god, I hope that this and Black Lagoon aren't the ones who'll be targeted….Please.....
What the hell is with Japan?! Aren't they all about honor and respect and shit?! So why is that governor guy such a douche bag?!
-
@Mr.333:
The only seinen series that I read are Black Lagoon, Deadman Wonderland, and Bloody Monday II, and they're all ongoing…....
Bloody Monday is shounen. (Weekly Shounen Magazine)
Actually, WSM in general is in trouble, they do a heck of a lot more risque stuff than Sunday or Jump. GTO was one such example.
And that was an AWESOME manga, but would be a clear victim for this type of censorship, even if it means self-induced.
I mean, GTO had underage prostitutes, peeping toms, all sorts of perversion with minors.
But obviously GTO was about TEACHING and EDUCATION, and used these themes as examples of public issues in the youth of Japan.
But as for minor depiction goes, the bill prohibits ALL depiction, negative or positive, so GTO would definitely be an offender, even though it was in GOOD INTENTION.Having been following it, frankly. I thought this law was only against loli content and now I found it also goes against violence and gore (and now I'm getting worried, since most of the mangas I follow are quite graphical)
Violence and gore isn't part of the bill, although the governor was pushing for it to be.
Rape and incest is, however. -

Violence and gore isn't part of the bill, although the governor was pushing for it to be.
Rape and incest is, however.Than why would Deadman Wonderland be affected?
Yes it's Seinen, and yes it has A LOT of Violence/Blood/Gore/Torture, but it doesn't have any Sexual Rape or Incest at all that I can think of.
It'll fuck up Black Lagoon though, no way around that.
-

I haven't read far, but I thought there were nudity or near-nudity of minors. The main girl, for one.
Deadman Wonderland is also shounen, btw.
And no, being shounen isn't protection, it's the other-way around.
They want to "shield kids from these material", so they're obviously intending to go after shounen first. -

Ganta's what, 14?
There may not be a lot(read: none) of rape, but he did get perved on pretty badly at times.
And his best male "friend" was a total siscon, from what I recall.
-
If nudity of minors isn't allowed even Nausicaä should be taken out of the shelves.
I admit that some contents may be too strong to be sold to underage readers (hell, I enjoy a sick manga like Domina no Do but I won't sell it to kids) but this law is plain ridiculous.
-
Deadman Wonderland is also shounen, btw.
WOW. If Deadman Wonderland is Shounen, then I don't even know what Seinen is. Seriously, it's shounen? That's….surprising.
And no, being shounen isn't protection, it's the other-way around.

-
@Mr.333:

It all depends on the magazine and publisher. If Shuueisha was running Deadman Wonderland, it'd probably end up in Ultra Jump or the like.
@Mr.333:

It all depends on how stupid Ishihara is feeling.
Though I can't really think of any way they'd be able to mess with One Piece in the first place.
-

Yeah, that's Ecchi, but not forced sexual rape. Then again, Genkku (Super-Monk guy) did get raped by the other monks, but his role in the story is over and we're already at the climatic end-series battle, so I don't think that it will get hammered too hard….
-
Hey guys what did I mis-OH SHIT.
-

Change 123 won't be affected because the series has ended and all the volumes are already out.
It all depends on how stupid Ishihara is feeling.
Though I can't really think of any way they'd be able to mess with One Piece in the first place.
I dunno, with the whole Tennryubito Slavery Arc that's going to be present/coming up…. (There could be strong hints of sexual slavery)
-
@Mr.333:
And what magazine/publisher is Deadman Wonderland running in? And Black Lagoon?
Deadman Wonderland is Kadokawa (Shounen Ace), Black Lagoon is Shogakukan (Sunday GX).
I dunno, with the whole Tennryubito Slavery Arc that's going to be present/coming up…. (There could be strong hints of sexual slavery)
I doubt Oda will go into it any more than he did back during Hancock's flashback.
-
Am I the only one who hopes, that for whatever reason, they just target the shit out of Bleach? Maybe Kubo will end it if they do. That way, they can make good on their threat to take out one of the big manga names. And it's no loss to us there. Win/Win situation.
hopes for too much
-
@Mr.333:
And what magazine/publisher is Deadman Wonderland running in? And Black Lagoon?
Deadman Wonderland runs in Monthly Shounen Ace, published by Kadokawa
(Kadokawa was the first to announce their intention to not attend the Anime Fair in protest to the prefecture's passing of the bill)Black Lagoon runs in Monthly Sunday GX published by Shogakukan.
Sunday GX is a seinen magazine counterpart to Shuueisha's Ultra Jump.@Mr.333:

I think you're getting different aspects of the bill confused.
Banning of depiction of rape, or glorification of incest, exists separate from the minor protection part.
Any sexually suggestive or sexual depiction of minor is prohibited, that includes skimpy outfit or sexually suggestive poses and innuendos. In fact, portion of the bill states it prohibits SWIM SUIT DEPICTION of minors under 13, if they deem it "sexually suggestive".
What in the hell, do these people never go to a public beach? -

Any sexually suggestive or sexual depiction of minor is prohibited, that includes skimpy outfit or sexually suggestive poses and innuendos.
By that logic, 80% of all manga should be destroyed then. Almost every manga in existence has some form of Ecchi and/or Fanservice for the male readers. Do they REALLY think that's going to happen? That they're going to get away with this?
-
And now you understand why people are so against this.
-
And now you understand why people are so against this.
I mean, come on!
When I think of Japan's biggest export products, I think of Akihabara's techno/anime/manga stuff. If they really ban, like, 75% of that, that just plain asinine.

Here's an example of one of the clause
Depictions that stiumlates sexual emotions in minors, or help influence them to violent behavior, or influence them to feel suicidal or desire to commit crime, and thus hinder healthy growth of the minor
Manga, animation, or other images (excluding real pictures) that depicts sexual acts or simulated sexual acts that violates the law, or depiction that glorifies or exaggerates sexual or simulated sexual acts that's illegal between blood relatives that are prohibited from marrying each other, and thus hinder healthy growth of the minorYes, that is correct. "excludes real images". Thus, it's fine to have them in films.
And novels, since they aren't images. The asshole is singling out otaku culture, and otaku culture ALONE.
Hell if we take the law by its face value, Simpsons and South Park would be violating the law.

This bring me to a question. How in the hell did this get passed? Obviously manga/anime (otaku) fans wouldn't agree to this shit. And don't manga/anime (otaku) fans make up like, half of Japan's population? What, were those that voted all 50+?
And another question, how is the general Japanese public taking this? Like, those 30 & younger? National Outcry? Oscar Grant Level Riots?

Huh, I hadn't read the original text before.
That shit could apply to ANYTHING, even fucking Doraemon.
-
Now I may be wrong, but I don't think this guy is an anime/manga fan…. :ninja:
EDIT: Panda Bear, stop lurking and tell me what you think of all this. I see you.
-
If it's a depiction of the no-nos, it's bad. But if it's the real thing, then it's a-okay!
Excuse me while I barf
-
And what non-otaku people in Japan think about the law?
I mean, by now almost every middle age citizen must have grown reading mangas and such. They must know that anime culture is not that bad since they have grown with it.
On the other part I think in the late years things were getting a bit out of hand with all the lolis.
Edit: it was already asked, my bad.

Well, at the point pretty much every major publisher is screaming nazi, it should be obvious the creative market isn't exactly happy about this.
I wish film and music industry would join the fight with the publishers, they seem to be looking at this like it doesn't concern them.
They obviously aren't aware of First They Came by Martin Niemöller.PS: and no, otaku doesn't make up half of Japan. In fact, they are still a minority.
-
This might just actually be a far bigger scandal than the recent Japanese 100 year old scandal.
That's pretty damn hard to top.
-

!

Huh, I hadn't read the original text before.
That shit could apply to ANYTHING, even fucking Doraemon.
In fact, recently when Fujiko Fujio A signed the petition by manga artist against this bill, the bill reform committee specifically listed Doraemon by Fujiko F Fujio as one of the excluded manga from the law.
But they still didn't give a reason why, and what exactly meets or violates the standard.
So basically they said "Doraemon is fine, but we decide what is and isn't, and not gonna tell you"Power trip, anyone?
