Yeah, I agree the Roger having the Rubber fruit being revealed so late into the manga is quite a big reveal, perhaps too late? Who knows.
I have been stalking these forums past couple months without an account and people come up with some wacky theories, very entertaining, perhaps this is just one of those.
No perhaps about it - it is wacky and unlikely.
Hence the "Gut feeling" facet.

Well, this particular topic has been discussed for few pages so this may be late in reply but … one thing I also noticed is that... while Cymelion has some points as to why some other characters may not want to reveal to Luffy that his DF bears similarity to the Pirate King's ... it does not make sense at all that Oda will hide this from readers. (Robin's past, Strawhat's history, etc. were revealed to the readers even if they were not revealed to the characters concerned in the story... ) There's just no hint of what so ever and is what Sea and the others are calling it... bad writing or plot hole.
So I'm wondering what other similarities or parallels will be understandable between Luffy and Roger... I wonder if he'll also get a disease :ninja: I'm kind of feeling he's bound to get this ... just so to fulfill Chopper's dream.
Also, I wonder how others would feel if certain crew members of Roger also bear resemblance to Luffy's crew ... lol! (this reminded me of some other shounen ... lol which I found ridiculous and annoying for that story) ... though depending on how Oda does it, it might turn out to be different. But then again, we don't know much about Roger's other crew members... Hopefully we get to meet more in New World...

I sincerely hope you are not seriously thinking that Roger was too ashamed and embarrassed to let people know he had a DF while the honorable Whitebeard who was also acknowledged as the strongest Pirate at that time had no problem showing it off to the world.
Because that made absolute no sense. -
@Sea:

Because that made absolute no sense.Eep @_@! Nah, wasn't thinking that.
I also think it wouldn't make sense he will even hide his DF powers or be ashamed to show it or USE it. I was thinking of that particular instance when he said as to why Garp wouldn't bother telling Luffy. xD I wanted to say that even if for some peculiar reasons Oda justifies why Luffy doesn't find out he has the same DF as Pirate King, he will never be able to justify not telling or hinting this piece of information to the readers :D

This thread went from good to shit so quickly w/ the Roger Gomu Gomu BS.
Holy crap that's one retarded theory, I can't believe it even went on for so damned long.

[qimg]http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8228/bullshit2.jpg[/qimg]This is so great it should be canon…..........I mean the Rouge and harem part.
-
The second part made me laugh, great stuff.
-
Rouge is more likely to have been the Gomu Gomu Fruit's previous owner than Roger. And even that theory's a bit farfetched.

Sea, that was hilarious.

Oda is obsessed with destiny.
Oda: Can I talk to you about something that's kind of related to destiny?
Inoue: What is it? You're making me nervous.
Oda: Well, I was born in Kumamoto, and there used to be a shop called the Antique House, right?
Inoue: Yeah, the used clothing shop, right? That brings back memories.
Oda: I used to go there every so often with friends to buy clothes. Around the time I won Jump's Best New Artist award and had just gotten an editor, I was talking to one of the shop keepers and mentioned that I wanted to be a comic creator. He replied, "If you make it big, you'll be the second one born here." "Who's the first?" I asked. "Takehiko Nariai" ('Takehiko Inoue' is a pen name). He used to work here."
I couldn't believe it!Inoue: Ha ha ha! I wonder who it was you talked to?"
Oda: He bragged that one of the Slam Dunk players was modeled after him (laughs). He also said that when the shop wasn't busy, you would be behind the cash register drawing pictures.
Inoue: Yeah, and not doing my job at all.
Oda: I was really surprised. I was like, Wow! Inoue sensei was here! It was just a shop I went to and I had never really thought much about it before. I felt that it must be destiny so I asked my editor to please let me be an assistant at your studio. He just casually told me "There aren't any openings." That really bummed me out.
Inoue: Really? Boy did we mess up. We should have brought you in as an assistant. (laughs)
Oda: If I had been accepted at your studio, it likely would have completely changed my destiny. In a lot of ways, that was probably a turning point for me. I'd always thought I'd like to talk to you about this personally.
Inoue: Thank you. I'll remember this.

Destiny is a lie. Everything is coincidence that people assign meaning to.

Really?
So you can decide that for everyone? Because unless you can out think a Tibettian monk I don't think you can go around claiming that

I agree.

I think this theory about Roger having the gomu gomu fruit has been stretched a little too far.
-
Roger looks like a very serious guy. When at Loguetown the old man in the bar mentioned that he killed a giant with a sword. No GOMU GOMU.

Uh…..no, filler does not count.
-
But there would have been people saying that he used the Gomu Gomu fruit.
You can't become such a huge icon and then not have such a huge detailed just left out. -
I never disagreed with you about the the devil fruit, as personally i do not think so either. Just dont use filler to argue a point (or the anime for that matter), it never works. In the MANGA, Roger never killed a giant with a sword, lets leave it at that.
-
Destiny is a lie. Everything is coincidence that people assign meaning to.
Birds of a feather flock together.
Its not uncommon for people with similarities to find the same paths in life.
To say that's just a coincidence without considering it's a cycle of existence is a little premature.

A valid point, Mingo. This discussion reminds me what Flamingo said.
Justice always wins, because the winning side is always declared justice. Also, Bepo (the Bear) is an awesome character. Has one of the best uniforms yet.

Justice always wins, because the winning side is always declared justice.Yup, and, of all the times fate and such has been mentioned in One Piece (and there have been a lot of them), Doflamingo's speech was the best. He is just a great character. I subscribe to his worldview.

But he destroyed a whole national army for speaking ill of his friend.

Yeah, I mix the Manga and the anime up to often.
Flamingo had an awesome speech though.

I really like this thread (up until the Gomu Gomu no Roger at least).
One thing regarding fate that I think is really fascinating to bring up is the fact that something as simple as the Rumbar Pirates adopting Laboon led to the Great Pirate Era. If it wasn't for the Rumbar Pirates, Crocus would have had no motivation at all to go with the Roger pirates and Roger could have possibly died before reaching Raftel. I think one of my favorite episodes/chapters is when Rayleigh explains the story to the Straw Hat crew and it ties in completely well with Shanks, Laboon, Brook, Robin, Ohara, Skypeia … Considering all that went on from that moment forward one cannot possibly blame Rayleigh from being entirely blown away by the idea of fate.
Even if you don't believe in it in real life, it's good to appreciate how well Oda is doing all of this. It's easy to get lost in the manga when you realize just how elaborately planned it all is, and I really can't wait to see how Oda closes all those threads in a single "HOLY F*CK" moment of revelations.

you can't know that
as many have pointed out luffy has the power to make people flock to him and it seems like it was a power roger has (as well as eveyr main character in every manga, but beside the point) so we don't know if crocus would have not came along or not without laboon.
-

While you make a good point (impossible to know what would happen in an alternate reality, it'd be dumb to argue that), I still think it's simply mind-blowing how the Rumbar pirates-laboon story was connected to the overarching theme of One Piece and the Pirate King.
Not knowing what the alternate reality may have been doesn't detract from the fact that things happened the way they did. -
Crocus was supposedly the only person who could keep Roger going through his disease. He'd still have plenty of motivation to go with him, even without Laboon. I agree that it's a pretty cool link, though.

Out of 7 paths, Luffy chose the same path as Roger at Twin Cape. Coincidence? Nope, it was inevitable, decided byHeavenOda.!

! Insert Oda's Blabbering about FateI almost forgot why I made this post.
Oda was slowly building a link between Luffy and Roger. To all, it was interesting at first.Coincidences are interesting. It’s human nature to be fascinated by coincidences and the links between seemingly random things. If you believe in fate, coincidences made you believe even more firmly in it.
If you don’t, they are still interesting (click). But after this link between Luffy and Roger got repeated many times, you started getting annoyed and realizing that it’s not supposed to be coincidences. This annoys you, because you want to believe everyone has a fair chance. The fact that one’s accomplishment was pre-determined annoys you. It would be discouraging to you, and make you think effort is meaningless. But you forget to take into account that your effort may be also preordained. So is your intention to fight your fate. Of course you hate the concept of fate, because you want to believe you are free-willed, not a puppet. But then, any thing about pre-monitoring the future in manga should annoy you, because if you can pre-monitoring, it means there is a pre-determined future. And goddamnit, you don’t even know if you have free will, you just hate the concept of not having one. This’s totally human nature.
!
Thus, not being prepared, you would naturally hate the destiny plot point. Just like me 2 years ago, when I hated the hell out of the will of D.
Not to venture deep into the philosophical discussion of fate, this is an interesting post:
