What the hell?
They made Naruto and…and Bleach look better than One Piece. Why?!
I mean the sing-along was okay, but not a single fight?
They could've done Strawhats vs Baroque Works, or Strawhats vs CP9. Only die-hard One Piece fans would've enjoyed that sing-along.
And I'm pretty sure not everyone at that place is a die-hard One Piece fan. Most people who don't know what One Piece is would've been turned off by that stuff.
Dis-ap-point-ment.

I dunno. The true spirit of OP isn't really about the fights. It's more adventurous in bizarre settings. It would feel a little off otherwise.
-
^ And there lies the answer why One Piece will sadly NEVER overtake Naruto and DBZ in the states. It's main 'thing' isn't about the 'bad-ass' fights. It's main thing is the adventure aspect and bizzare characters. Sure, it has awesome fights, but that's not it's main draw.
To make an example, compare the DB and DBZ anime and how popular they were in the states. DBZ was WAY more popular. Why? 'Cause it was more 'serious'. Was focused more on 'fights'. Wasn't as 'cutesy'. Etc etc etc….
That is what the mainstream of America want. They can careless about 'adventure' in a show from Japan. They want to see fights. Many of 'em. The actual story is most of the time second nature to them.
This is why One Piece will not be as popular as Naruto or DBZ. They may be similar as being shonen, but their executions on how they bring their appeal are different. One Piece is popular in Japan because they LOVE wonders and adventure stories over there.
But that doesn't quite work over here, I'm afraid.

I think you are underestimating the audiences Roman. Personally I thought it was just the terrible first impression the series left during the early dub. There are still many anime fans here in the west that only know what they have seen on the 4-kids dub.
-
Even if the 4Kids dub never happened and the first that came out was the FUNimation dub, "One Piece" would still be less popular than "Naruto" and "DBZ" and "Bleach", but more popular than what exists now.

The 4kids dub helped to make it unpopular, sure. But I have many friends who don't know a thing about the 4kids dub, so I introduce it to them via FUNi's dub… And most of the time they say 'This show is lame'. Which leads me to believe that it isn't just the 4Kids' dub horribleness that turns people away. Alot of them were also into DBZ and some are into Naruto...
And I'm not just saying a couple of people, either... 30 plus. Doesn't account for the whole US, sure. But it's still odd.
Again, look at DB's popularity and then DBZ's popularity (the anime) and you'll see what I mean with audiences here.

^the opening arcs DO kind of suck. also, the dub is hit or miss for people. show them the arlong or drum arc IN JAPANESE. or one of the movies. also, dbz came along when there wasn't as much competition. not to mention, pre-toonami, dbz was getting beaten in the ratings by sailormoon.
there's a newtype article on dbz that talks all about how it didn't really break out of cult status until the movie to toonami.

and how exactly did the lame singalong depict that?
didn't greg mention those singalongs make even oda cringe?

The opening arcs are great for what they are, humble beginnings that have potential, and potential there is there's foreshadowing right from the get-go. I just think most people need to get to the meat and potatoes right away. That's another thing I thought of too, "DBZ" took a while to catch on here, but of course in it was in a very different situation.
And who at Toei Animation or Shueisha or whatever thought it was a good idea to promote "One Piece" that way?

I've tried in English and Japanese. Hardly no success. They aren't the kinda people who are into watching stuff in another language anyways, and the dub isn't 'bad' enough to push people away for that reason.

I never said it was.

True but we don't really know that(how much more popular it can be compared to other shows). It would have had a bumpy start at first, but I'm sure later arcs would have been a great opportunity to hook in even more fans(or just watchers out of curiosity), assuming that the presentation isn't completely idiotic and content being true to the original.
Other than that, I honestly think some of you completely underestimate what the western audience gets into due to a few wapanese fans, or friends even. That's a minority.

True. I honestly believe that with the casual viewer of cartoons that doesn't really have a specific taste or preconception of what makes a good action/adventure/humor/fantasy cartoon they'd dig it. I mean from what I've seen and what's been said kids, one of the show's big target demos, really like it. I was at Kinokuniya with my family and I was showing my aunt who's not an anime fan at all the "One Piece" section and I was telling her a lot of anime fans don't like the art style, but she said she really liked it.

Why did fighting spirit totally bomb then?
This is way better than anything DBZ or Naruto did:

I recall geneon saying they were having a lot of trouble just getting to the end, sales wise.
Which was a shame for such a fantastic series, but it did look like the fanbase just wasn't there. I wonder if it'd have been any different with a tv deal.

"headbanger" the dub is fine, its how the show is depicted in general which will turn people off. i thik we just have to face it. its not gonna get any better from here. the important thing is that we know how great the show is.

eQZW8I3BP5gOw man watching Ippo V.S. Sendo is like watching animals doing stupid shit always great to see. By the way if you want to see a other awesome shonen series watch Hajime No Ippo (Video up). A Great sport manga and anime. The manga has 92 volumes and 913 chapters. And still going on with no end in sight. So watch it if you like great cararcters, good story and awesome fights.
Back on-topic:
It's really hard to get new casual fans to get in to One Piece like almost everybody said most people say that the series is to long or the don't like the art style. The best way to show One Piece is to show a movie. I think movie 6 will be the best one to do it.

"Hajime No Ippo' did worse than "Naruto" and "DBZ" because it's a sports anime.

Sorry but I'm really asking myself what kind of friends some people here have. Maybe I'm just in a unique position that my friends are actually respecting my opinion but I couldn't even imagine that after I say to a friend :“You know what, I have seen this animation series called One Piece. It is one of the best and funniest shows I have ever seen, you should watch it“ that he would say no.
My tactic is rather easy. I give the person I want to introduce to One Piece the first 44 Episodes and say:“It might seem childish at the beginning with the clown and stuff but trust me it is not. Watch the 44 Episodes and if you like it I will give you the rest and if you don't like it than stop. By the way it keeps only geting better“
I have a 100% success rate and got 14 close friends into One Piece. I'm not even counting family(11 people), acquaintances(I guess around 10), Internet friends(9) and Ex girl friends I was longer together than 3 months(6?). Some take longer than otheres. One of them needed 1 year to see all 44 Episodes, others 1 weekend. By the way the guy who took one year to watch 44 Episodes closed the gap after reading 28 volumes last month. I switch them from anime to manga after Skypia. Of course I give them a list which episodes they shouldn't watch and tell them what changes were made.
Maybe I'm just a OPtard but I REALLY don't see any reason why someone could NOT like OP. It IS mainstream and there is a insanly high chance that the person introduced to OP will like it. It is of course not perfect and has it's weaknesses like sometimes it drags a bit and it has a lot of wacky characters but the good traits prevail like:good story, funny, sometimes very deep, great characters, great character handling, good action, great story telling and great character interactions.
I find it much harder to introduce someone to something less mainstream like Berserk.I made the experience that usually younger people(around 16 and younger) call OP childish while not being exactly mature themselves. I'm 23 and my friends are all around my age and most of them are college students or absolvents and the time that we judge a book by its cover is long gone.
By the way the respect goes of course both ways and I got a lot of great books, movies and series recommended
-
Why did fighting spirit totally bomb then?
This is way better than anything DBZ or Naruto did:
eQZW8I3BP5gAhhh, Hajime no Ippo…man, that brings back memories...I used to watch this show before I even found out about Naruto.
Seriously though, it's a great show; it's definitely too bad that less people seem to acknowledge it as much as they would to Bleach or Naruto…:/
-
Well, yeah. Compared to something more obscure (like Berserk) One Piece of course is going to preform better. But compred to the likes of DBZ, Naruto and even Bleach… Not so much.
Actually, there's also another thing that One Piece lacks compared to Naruto and the like: Advertising. Good advertising. This was also a major thing. And something that FUNi (and even 4Kids) really didn't do much... There was hardly no merchandise, no advertising for the show... no, well, nothing. Besides a few games that I NEVER saw commercials for on TV and poor toys that... also got no commercials. Meanwhile Naruto and DBZ got toy and videogame commercials galore with many promos advertising the show.
The manga speed up was actually the only substantial advertising move that seemed significant. Unless you wanna count the TOONAMI ads.
So, there we go. Another reason why One Piece isn't as popular. It doesn't seem like the parties involve with it advertise it like they need to.
-
There isn't much advertising FUNImation can do with "One Piece' since Cartoon Network ditched it pretty quickly and now it's relegated only to DVD. FUNimation did some pretty good advertising for the simulcast when it started.
-
I have tried to bring friends to read One Piece but the art and number of episodes havent help
-
To tell you the truth, I'm not sure OP fans deserve to overtake Naruto and DB in the states and europe. OP fans are way too insecure… at least most of them are and that throws people off, especially those from other fandoms who know that many OP fans love to bash their favourite show.
I swear, there are no fans as ruthless as the OP ones. You just have to go see the bleach and naruto thread and you'll get why. It's as if both series are the worst mangas ever with absolutely no positive aspects to it, which isn't true.
I've managed to convince at least two of my friends to watch the OP anime. The first one stopped at some point, the other still watches it and also follows the manga. But I'm not sure I would've managed to do it if I told them or showed them what the OP fans say about their favourite series.
-
Well, that's just the vocal fanboys, for the most part. And it's usually just here. You go anywhere else and One Piece fans are usually more 'tolerant' with the other shonen series, for the most part.
-
"Hajime No Ippo' did worse than "Naruto" and "DBZ" because it's a sports anime.
Yeah its really a shame because that the reason why Hajime No Ippo will never be popular. The reason that Geneon licensed Hajime No Ippo because Hajime No Ippo is a great show (Of course it is) and they tought that sports anime/manga will be new popular thing in anime. But unfortainly they were making a big mistake. Sports anime/manga will always be the odd bird, and for some reason anime fans won't give it a chance. And it's really a shame because shows like Slam Dunk, Hajime No Ippo, Eyeshield 21, Ashita No Joe are better then your averge fantasy shonen series.
I hope Funimation will pick up this show and give the series a second chance and a better dub. Also they need to advertise the F… out of this show. So atleast new people will give the series a chance.
Back on-topic:
Could Funimation can have a tv-deal with a channel to show a One Piece movie. Something like movie 6 or movie 9, so childeren and grown-ups can watch the movie so they can have a judgement if they like they movie and want to see the tv-series. This way tv-broadcast channel already know if the show is going to be a succes or not. -
It's not that simple to get something on T.V.
And I doubt FUNimation would get "Hajime no Ippo", "Big Windup" didn't do well for them either.
-
Which is a shame.
More people need to see Takamura vs Hawk.

Bleach and Naruto are both terrible terrible comics, this has absolutely nothing to do with One Piece.
Thanks for masking your butthurt from hearing this fact in some bizarre self-hating fandom rant. -

Youy haven't seen the Sonic or the Harry Potter or the Avatar fandoms, have you?
Or the democratic and republican parties?
Bible fans can get pretty heated too when confronted with Koran fans.

A series being bad has nothing to do with a different series being good.
And pretty much everyone accepts that Naruto was pretty decent in its first half, and that Bleach has stylish character art.

I spoke the truth. What do you think will happen if you approach a bleachtard (to give an example) and tell him that bleach is shit and that your favourite series shits on it? Can you predict the reaction? Grow the fuck up.
-
Plenty of "Naruto" fans have taken a shit on "One Piece" as well, it goes both ways. The whole debate among fans of which of the big 3 shonen is shit and not shit is ridiculous, it's ultimate nerd banter and reminiscent of the "Star Wars vs. Star Trek" debate in sci-fi circles, in that it's just comparing and contrasting big franchises that are unique in their own right but also with obvious similarities. I don't know how civil that particular subject is in sci-fi, but for anime-manga "One Piece" vs. "Naruto"vs. "Bleach" it can get pretty ridiculous. I don't think I'd like "Bleach" if I read/watch beyond what I've seen so far, but now I'm actually curious about getting into "Naruto" because it's still doing pretty well for itself and yet it's constantly being bashed by AP forumers, I can't help but think how much they may be exaggerating or not.
But back on topic, there's plenty of hating going on between the individual fanbases of the different anime, but there's also lots of fans who like all three of the HST or at least two of them, and don't bash or bug others about their preferences or complain too much about a series that isn't relevant to them. I know if some narutard started insulting my opinion about "One Piece" that wouldn't stop me from checking out "Naruto", I'd found out myself whether I'd like it or not. I know I've been actually guilty of being a bit of a onepiecetard years ago.
-
I love how antiravage's entire argument against One Piece is that it's fans are annoying.
Doesn't seem to stop other franchises.

Trust me, we're not exaggerating.
Majority of us will say that until the Sasuke rescue arc it was pretty good. It all goes exponentially downhill from there.
Don't commit to it man. Spend your time doing something, anything else than reading/watching Naruto.
-
If Oda takes a wrong turn in his manga, or does something people don't personally like, I wonder how many of you people will start to loathe this series as they did in Naruto and Bleach.

I get what anti's saying people can get turned off by something because of annoying fans, but if that applied to everybody no one would bother checking out anything.
Yeah yeah I've heard it all before about "Naruto", doesn't stop me from thinking a lot of APers are exaggerating, I can't help but think that way and when a lot of them spend so much energy hating on a series I don't get why they'd be paying attention to if they disliked it so much. I mean if it was really, really that horrible I don't see how so many fans still stick around with it, I'm not the type of person that just assumes a bunch of people have bad taste. Last chapter I've read of "Bleach" months ago I didn't like so I'm not checking out the rest, but as for "Naruto" everything I've seen for myself I didn't mind, so if I get around to checking it out and I start disliking it I don't think it would've been a waste if I at least find out myself whether I like "Naruto" or not.
-

It's kind of understood that authors can't please everyone. There are still people bitching about the One Piece timeskip.
But the problem really with Bleach and Naruto isn't just that they're bad (although they are), it's that they used to be so good and now they are shells of their former selves.
And so far, One Piece shows no signs of screwing up. I can disagree with parts of it, but nothing even close for me to forsake the series.
@firecrouch:Yeah yeah I've heard it all before about "Naruto", doesn't stop me from thinking a lot of APers are exaggerating, I can't help but think that way and when a lot of them spend so much energy hating on a series I don't get why they'd be paying attention to if they disliked it so much. As I've said, Naruto used to be pretty dang good. We're only reading now because we at least want to see it end or see how stupid it gets next. Same with Bleach.
If you honestly want to get into the series knowing the criticisms of the series, I can't stop you. It's your time you're wasting. I gave my warning.

Also "Dragonball" kind of jumped the shark after Freeza, and it always had its own problems that "One Piece" and "Naruto" never had. Even so "Dragonball" was still enjoyable and it just happened to not be as good as the previous story arcs.

Dragon Ball jumped the shark after the Cell Saga TBH.

Yes, Dragonball did. (and don't talk about what Naruto has or hasn't done since you haven't read it)
Naruto hasn't been enjoyable at all, and Bleach hasn't either.
The reason people still read Naruto is because it's an unbelievable train wreck, also because it takes no effort to read a chapter a week.
I was rereading the series this summer and stopped right where it got bad, it's NOT fun to marathon it.
Just to check in with the raging house fire every week and see what stupid ass bullshit Kishimoto is doing now.
Like drawing Armadillo penis.Take the advice from me as I've been following the series since 2004, when I used to like it better then One Piece.
As for Bleach, I don't read Bleach because it's more boring then sand.

Why would you assume I'd talk about "Naruto" like that? All I've done is watch a few episodes and read a couple of chapters and for the most part thought it was fine.
And aren't there other, worse train wrecks to follow for whatever reason? Is it one of those things where it's so bad it's good? And no effort to read? Wow, I don't get that reason at all.
-
If the excuse is that you want to see how bad the manga is, then I can show you plenty of mangas that have horrible art and story and then I would like to see if you can finish them. You don’t read the shitty mangas till the end. That’s how you know when a manga is shit or not. You can’t finish it no matter how much you try.
Wait so you and others are still keeping up on "Naruto" and "Bleach" after it's gone downhill? And you're saying I'd be wasting time to discover myself whether I'd like it or not? It's not my time I'm wasting if I don't have my opinion yet.

I just think people are not giving Oda enough credit. One Piece isn’t the best shounen because all of the other shounen mangas are shit. There is actually a good competition in the market (better than when db was around) and OP shines the most not because all of the other mangas are shit, but because it is simply better, which makes it even greater.
I know for a fact why I read Naruto, Bleach, Berserk and why I spend my money on its volumes… it’s because I like them. It’s impossible for me to read something that is shit. I have tried some other mangas and the ones I don’t like simply cannot hold my interest. I mean, there are even mangas that I‘m a fan of that I can’t seem to finish or keep track of ( Hajime no Hippo), so how would I be able to read week after week something that is shitty? I can’t fathom that.
@JERK:
What the hell are you talking about. Like the mod you conveniently decided to leave out said, these series suck in a vacuum. Nothing about this has anything to do with One Piece in any way. Or eachother.
Why would I make a reply to Robby when I don’t know how bad the Sonic, Avatar and Harry Pother fandom are? I’m not part of those fandoms, so I can’t speak with knowledge about them. The OP fandom is different. I know it very well since I’m part of it.
And what Robby said about Naruto and Bleach isn’t properly wrong, so I don’t have anything to say about his post. Your post on the other hand started with you attacking me as if what I was saying was wrong when pretty much anyone here can acknowledge that they see most series that aren’t OP as shit. Like I said before, you need to grow up and stop acting like a bloodlusted kid. We get it, you’re tough behind your computer. Congratulations.
-
Is it one of those things where it's so bad it's good? And no effort to read? Wow, I don't get that reason at all.
It's so bad that it's bad.
But if you've already read 500 chapters (the early ones of which seem to hint at the development of some neat characters and an interesting world), it just sort of makes sense to take 25 seconds out of your life every Thursday to watch the plot advance in the hope that something cool will happen, while subconciously knowing that it won't. The current lack of quality makes the weekly experience little more than a laughable afterthought though.Bleach is in a league of its own though. I was around chapter 50 when I liteally fell asleep at my desk and realized the next day that I had zero interest in continuing.

I'm not trying to find out specifically if "Naruto" is bad, it's just that on one hand it's heavily reviled by one group and has a huge fan-following on the other, so I want to find out for myself whether it really is bad or good, because the general opinion varies so much.
And yep, that's why I don't believe people when they say "Naruto" is horrible, because they're still reading it.
@CCC:
The current lack of quality makes the weekly experience little more than a laughable afterthought though. No, it doesn't make any sense. I don't know about you but reading manga isn't some endurance test, for me it's for fun. If you stop liking something you can just move on to something else, everybody does that. If you're curious enough to see if it actually gets better or not there are other fans out there that actually read the series for fun that can tell you whether it's gotten better or not. And if you subconsciously know that it won't improve, then, why the hell do you still care?

I marathoned through 120 episodes of fucking Card Captor Sakura in my 18's
No matter what kind of shit, I can fucking bore my way through it, figuratively and literally -
Why would you assume I'd talk about "Naruto" like that? All I've done is watch a few episodes and read a couple of chapters and for the most part thought it was fine.
You said it didn't have problems like Dragonball.
And aren't there other, worse train wrecks to follow for whatever reason? Is it one of those things where it's so bad it's good? And no effort to read? Wow, I don't get that reason at all.
The fact that I followed it as a regular since waaaay back has a lot to do with it. I wouldn't say it's good for being bad, it is morbidly fascinating to see how bad it gets. The same reason I bother dealing with bad posts and dissecting them here I guess is why I still read Naruto. And by read, I mean skim.

Who the fuck are you to tell me what I do or don't do with shitty mangas.
There's a ton of ways something is shitty and reasons people have for putting up with shit past point of sanity.
I just think people are not giving Oda enough credit. One Piece isn’t the best shounen because all of the other shounen mangas are shit.
Bleach and Naruto are shit.
There is actually a good competition in the market (better than when db was around)
ahaha no there isn't.
DBZ was at the same time as stuff like Slam Dunk. The only real modern shonen competition OP has is Hunter X Hunter.
Nothing else comes remotely close in terms of quality.and OP shines the most not because all of the other mangas are shit, but because it is simply better, which makes it even greater.
Naruto and Bleach are shit..
I know for a fact why I read Naruto, Bleach, Berserk and why I spend my money on its volumes… it’s because I like them. It’s impossible for me to read something that is shit.
Boy do I have bad news for you.
Also I can't believe you pay for Bleach.
Why don't you just scribble stick figures and have them fight, it would be the same value.
If you have terrible taste this makes sense.

God talking to you is like mixing Terek and Captain Usopp into one.
You just refuse to believe people can willingly experience things they don't like.
Well it's fucking possible, get over it and stop making excuses for other peoples behavior. It's incredibly annoying.

To prove Zephos right, I used to write a blog about this shit-fucker of a video-maker on YouTube. I hated everything he did but I still wrote about him. Why? I wanted to inform people why he was a shit-fucker. Plus that whole trainwreck thing.
Naruto is a major trainwreck full of DEM and armadillo cock.
