Actually, it's one devil fruit we don't know enough of and I personally want to understand better. I'm sure there'll be some sort of weakness wherein seawater returns you to your original age or something, or some other sort of limit.
Also, remember that when we encountered Robin her ability seemed broken as well, and that quickly stopped being the case.

Personally, I still think she has potential for a great story, especially in how she is/was connected to WB. However, much has to pass before I consider her a potential nakama.

edit: haha, imagine poor sanji trying to cater to the tastes of that woman.

It's heavily implied. When it seems WB betrayed Squardo and the NW captains, she is seen crying. Later on, following the war she is angry and desires to seek out Blackbeard, which I guess she was successful in doing.

Bonney said how stupid Zoro was, then said that Luffy was even more stupid. Makes me think that unless she somehow got involved in something that made her an exceptional target to the Marines and the WG, she wouldn't join. Her line to Akainu makes me think she's certainly against the marines and/or government, but her earlier comments about Luffy and Zoro shows that she isn't really interesting in confronting the full force of the WG. And once Luffy gets going again, that would be inevitable.

So I don't think its entirely impossible, but it would require some changes that we haven't seen yet.

we don't know enough about this yet to consider her really. the only way i'd ever see her joining is if the strawhats end up rescuing her or something of the sort.

I was thinking the same thing.
We have enough Devil Fruit users. We need more people that fight with martial arts, since right now Sanji is the only one.

Martial arts are the arts of fighting… I'm pretty sure they all fight. Unless you're talking about kenpo and assuming Sanji will use Newkama kenpo now or something.

There are so many good things a fishman would bring to the crew that I would honestly be disappointed in Oda as an author if he didn't bring it to fruition. I know it's harsh, and I would still read and enjoy One Piece, but a fishman would not only balance the crew battle wise, but would also tie a lot of loose ends from previous arcs.

We've had three arcs in a row where the whole Fishman/Slavery issue has been a strong theme. Three arcs in a row, and we haven't even reached Fishman Island yet. Hell, FI was mentioned even before the StrawHats reached the Grand Line.

The only argument I can find against it is that it might be too obvious.

About Jinbei, I really want to like him and see him as part of the SHs as a big "Fishman for Nakama" supporter, but I can't honestly bring myself to love him. He just seems too serious and uninteresting. Whatever few is interesting about him seems too Zoro-like.

I think the main reason why people are saying Jimbei is because he's the only fishman we know that has a chance to join.
I say lets wait till they get to Fishman Island, then start talking on which fishman will join.

How the heck is Brook not awesome?!

Let's just look at the people who have joined since we got to the Grand Line:

1. A chibi anthropomorphic raindeer who loves cotton candy and is a doctor.
2. A former enemy who happens to be the only person who can decipher the ancient poneglyphs, sole survivor of Ohara, and can sprout body parts wherever and whenever she wants.
3. An cyborg shipwright who survived being hit by a train and has something against wearing pants.
4. A musician that is a living skeleton with an afro and behaves like a gentleman.

Jinbei just isn't weird enough.

I imagine the crew will get a new nakama at fishman island. Just it will be someone very unexpected, or not quite a conventional fishman. Thats the biggest problem i see with jinbei i like to think that someone like mohmoo will join (seacow from arlong park) although i know he won't thats the kind of craziness i expect in order to deserve a place in Luffy's crew.

Edit: Mohmoo has a chance! seacows are apparently classified type A as "big friendly"

Mohmoo isn't human though, so anything animal-like wouldn't work since they'd have to be protecting it. Think about the Rumba pirates and why they left Laboon behind.

Baracuda type-fishman. I've said it before and I'll state the reason again. Mermaid is stated as the fastest swimmer right? If Oda follows real life facts (like he often does), then a Barracuda fish is the fastest swimmer, so in terms of speed its actually Barracuda > Mermaid > Flying Fish

As for which type of fishman, I would actually enjoy either a fishwoman or a mermaid. The crew does need more interesting interactions between the girls. Hopefully this fishwoman/mermaid also has a melee-type skill and wanting to be the strongest at something (fishman karate?), which would also be an interesting interaction with Zoro who'd have the memory of Kuina and would lecture her on how her sex shouldn't matter.
I also always felt like the thing about mermaids being the fastest in the sea is a subtle hint for future usefulness of a mermaid (such as saving sinking DF users the fastest, for example.)

Perona seems to be out too. I don't think Jimbei would join, because he is the main protector of the fishman island, he has no goal, no dream like any of the mugiwara crew… And he's also quite old to join a rookie crew...

But they might meet there some powerfull and young fishman with such a dream, and Jimbei may encourage that guy to join Luffy's crew, by loyalty to Luffy.

I'm pretty sure the fastest fish is the sailfish. Barracudas are pretty awesome though, and he or she might have something in common with Nami since barracudas are attracted to shiny things.

I'd be sooo disappointed if it was a mermaid joining. After how fishmen and all the racism against them, slavery and Fisher Tiger + Sunny Pirates - themes that have been brought up over and over and over again, not to mention Nami's previous issues with Arlong, a mermaid joining would just be too easy. And I don't want to go through the last three arcs where it was a theme + Fishman Island, only for fishmen to go back to being villains' lackeys.

Whether the fishman will be male or female doesn't bother me. I have a feeling it'll be male simply because we've only seen one fishwoman and that was just in a cover story. It could go either way though. I have a feeling he or she will contrast Arlong a lot - probably being very nice, calm and sensitive.

Then again, Oda did say the SHs would sail away with a former boss character, which could be the villain of the FI arc.

So for all we know the Sunny Pirates could have included mermaids and Fisher Tiger could have saved mermaids as well.
Also, FI is supposed to have a mermaid princess, meaning both potential story and the fact that fishmen and mermaids coexist and share the same issues. By no means is it an easy escape for Oda.

They are stronger, and that's canon in One Piece. Whether any random fishman can defeat any random human is a different story.

Just because there was a potential issue with a mermaid princess doesn't mean that said mermaid princess is going to join. There was an issue with the shipwright mayor in Water 7, and some people expected Iceberg to join, but he didn't.
I don't doubt that mermen and fishmen don't share the same issues, but it's been addressed far more critically in fishmen and from the start with Arlong. I just don't think Oda is giving us 3 arcs where fishmen and slavery have been tied together in terms of themes, only to make fishmen go back to being villain lackeys.

Ideally I would like a fishmen-mermen (or fishwoman-mermaid, whatever) duo to join at the same time. That'd be awesome too, but I doubt it'll happen.

Don't forget though that Fisher Tiger, in return, discriminated humans. The only exception being other slaves; he treated them equally (for example the Boa sisters).

I'm not, and I feel that fuels my argument; a fishman who joins will most likely have some sort of tie to Fisher Tiger. It'd address that discrimination on both sides of the aisle. A mermaid could not bring that because the leader of the sunny pirates was a fishman, and as far as we know there have been no mermaids as part of that crew even though theoretically there should be.

Can someone explain to me HOW a mermaid can really do anything on land by themselves that requires legs unless they're over 40 and their legs have split. I just don't get how they could fight, because even if they could slide like a slug, they still can't run or even just dodge with any real success

They split their legs at 30 I think. If so their fighting ability is probably the same as a human's. Yet they don't have the practice a human could have as a child.

I don't think the tail splitting really affects a mermaid's ability to swim.

It really wasn't that hard to understand and I was barely paying attention while I read it. He didn't say anything about their ability to swim, he said that the splitting of their tales into legs removes their uniqueness and for the most part they just seem like humans.

Robin is 30 now, I'll admit that. Brook and Franky I see as irrelevant, since they're male which does make a bit of a different. Still, I just don't feel the mermaid princess would be as old as or older than Robin. But that's just me
