I'm sorry, I didn't totally understand them. :p If your examples are the same as mine, you're saying that it was vague because it would be dumb if Mihawk sounded sure of his opinion?
Like people said many times already. Mihawk saw Moria alive, he knows the "dying in the war" story is bullshit, but he doesn't know what happened - unlike us, the readers.
I just can't get how freakin' Mihawk saying something similar to "well, this is not true, but the newspaper is saying that, so it is, he died" wouldn't sound dumb.
Actually he's not even wondering if Moria died or not, that's probably the last of his worries. He's seems suspicious about what the hell happened to him. Why is the Government saying that he died in the war when he didn't. Because, you know, a fellow Shichibukai just got erased. It is important to get Mihawk's point of view about this.
