Ao Kiji, that animation was sick. I checked out the guy's blog and it's remarkable.
Actually, what I am looking forward to, is this film delivering a FATALITY to the Dragon Ball movie. What I saw in the few moments of the trailer put everything and anything from that disaster to shame.
-
Check out the actual comic, it doesn't take too long to catch up and it's pretty damn good.
And yeah, this is probably going to be the best direct comic-to-movie adaptation to date.
-
this looks so fantastic.
the original material is pretty good too.

In terms of the animation vs live action, I've always been affected by this discussion since I'm a writer. I'm starting to write the first season of my series tomorrow, and I'm not going to lie, I'm petrified.
I'm not going to lie. I'm hoping that I can get my series into, at least, a comic book. Maybe get some fans, some viewers.
But if someone came up to me and said, "Would you like to make a live action series/movie of this?"….there would be blood.
There is no way in hell someone is making a live action version of my series. That's insane! There is too much bizarre shit that no special effect could pull off right. They'd sexually revamp my characters (I don't want my blonde, intelligent and athletic sniper to be played by Jessica Alba!). Give some of my best characters actors who can't act to save their life. And most importantly, do everything in the cheapest way possible.
Not everything is going to LOOK like Avatar, which was already shit outside the visuals.
Do not get me wrong. I think this movie will be fantastic. But I agree that an animated version would have been wicked awesome. That's also why I think the game might turn out amazing.
When it comes to script writing for live action movies, I always think of this crappy romantic comedy I saw one time that really put a scar on my soul. In it, one of the main characters wrote a script based off his two best friends (a guy and girl) who went through a crazy situation and fell in love.
A producer reads the script and talks about it with the writer during dinner. The producer starts changing the script, making the gay character straight, making the Brazilian character played by Orlando Bloom, and just changing everything. The writer starts arguing with the producer, until this:
Producer: I get it. You consider this script to be your baby, don't you?
Writer: Yes. Yes it is.
Producer: Let me give you some advice.
Producer: You gotta kill your baby! YOU GOTTA FUCKING KILL YOUR BABY!Shortly after that, his movie comes out with the changes done. And the movie basically ends with that fact.
I walked away wanting to vomit in fear.

I'd like to use Fooly Cooly here as example, which has a great animated series, as well as a totally different and equally awesome comic.
/immediate lost me there.
live-action is live-action and cartoons and comics are still both illustrated mediums.
With enough creative juices, and a bit of artistic freedom, it's possible to create two different, yet equally awesome artistic pieces out of a similar plot.
true, but you have a way better chance to create a compelling anime when doing a completely original work, for the medium, because from the start you're creating the concept with that specific medium in mind. adapting ANYTHING to a different medium and remaining faithful to the original feel and flow of the work is tough; it's hard enough to do a decent anime/comic/movie. it's tougher pulling off a good adaptation.
I was going to reply with HERPADURP I KNOW, but fuck it, you know what, they really are glorified storyboards. Just like animation and film are glorified, yet very very slow comics.
herpaderp, no? they're all entertainment, but they're all completely different and exclusive outlets of expression. by this logic, a painting is just a silent song…as poetic as that sounds, it's not even close to be true.
an action comic that's not action packed
derrr..action-packed=good, no action=bad, derp-whatever.
did you even fucking watch the movie trailer, it's nothing but fight scenes
have you ever fucking read the comics?
um, no. the book is a comedy/action/romance. it's not dragonball or something where the focus is on fighting at all! did you start reading it based on seeing the theatrical trailer or something? if you consider quirk and observation on dating and the modern life of 20-something hipsters ACTION, yeah. it's got fighting in it, but so does every other comedy or sports manga series with a street thug.the action is never totally serious in the books, and it's never INTENSE or brutal. it's silly stuff that's cool, but often done in this totally cursory way to compliment the video game+shonen manga gimmick of scott's relationship with ramona and his maturity. out of the last 200+ book, about 3-4 pages were scott actually fighting and the short robot scene happened almost completely 'off-screen'. it has fights in it, but that's a really simplistic look at what the book is 'about'. the books are usually 200-300+pages and there are about 8 pages or so of actual fighting in each. scott pilgrim is a character-driven relationship books with video game and indie music references and some quirky fights, but it's not definitely not even trying to be 'action-packed'.
the movie expands ALL the fights from the comics and tries to keep them comedic while adding this serious intensity to them. the books just use the fights as physical representations of the progress scott and ramona make in their relationship–and conduits for jokes. i guess we have different opinions of what action is packed, but a fight over in two pages because scott poked the big boss in her g-spot isn't exactly kill bill, taboo..
yeah, the MOVIE looks like it took the fighting aspect and ran with it to turn it into an action MOVIE, but the comics focus primarily on the characters and their relationships and the fights are just an occasional interruption. i mean, the entirety of book 5 was about how UNIMPORTANT the fighting actually is overall and how scott was OVER-SIMPLIFYING things to keep thinking that the solution to the story was to just finish beating up the final of the seven. it's a pretty disappointing book if you're reading it for fighting. that's like calling one piece a comic about sailing.

This particular segment here reminds me of Michelangelo, who considered Sculpture to be the highest form of art. Truthfully, if you were standing in front of David, it'd be difficult to conceive that a painter could recreate it in a way that would equal the original. But if a painter though he could, why would you stop him? If he fails, then that's that, but if he succeeds, then you then have two fantastic works of art.
that's a totally fine and respectable point, but it only totally works in a bohemian society that treats and appreciates all art forms equally. movies and tv are way, way more popular an accessible than anything written in this society. how many people will miss out on a awesome comic if the movie based on it sucks? how many people will completely avoid a series if the cartoon spin-off doesn't live up? 4kids? one piece?
which do you think the average person will be exposed to first: comic or cartoon?
with a live-action movie, for whatever reason, people are more likely to check out the source material if they like it. as opposed to a cartoon, where they feel like they're already basically seeing what's in the book anyway, because it's drawings. how many people never even look at the one piece manga and just keep to the anime?besides, it all falls to preference in the end, anyway. i personally enjoy the personal connection you get from reading and interpreting still images, deciding your own voice, pacing, etc., that you get with comic opposed to animation. now c'mon, babe! let us never fight again? kthnxmuah
@The:I kind of wish you would know what you were talking about Ao Kiji
useful and witty addition to the thread, by the way.
bitter because i corrected the stuff you were just flat-out making up the last time
this series was mentioned? -

But live action SP is still an adaptation of the comic.
true, but you have a way better chance to create a compelling anime when doing a completely original work, for the medium, because from the start you're creating the concept with that specific medium in mind.
you have a better chance? if you're good at what you do, then you can make it work. that goes for original and recreations alike.
herpaderp, no? they're all entertainment, but they're all completely different and exclusive outlets of expression. by this logic, a painting is just a silent song…as poetic as that sounds, it's not even close to be true.
No, I meant that literally. Animation is LITERALLY a slow comic, as frames. Comics LITERALLY are glorified storyboards (unless you were to discover a new way to make comics that weren't SEQUENTIAL IMAGES IN A SPECIFIC ORDER). They are both fantastic mediums, but when you get down to the nitty gritty, that's just how it is.
derrr..action-packed=good, no action=bad, derp-whatever.
UH, I was quoting your own dopey chain of logic, goofy
have you ever fucking read the comics?

i call it action packed because the plot can only go foreward if SCOTT PILGRIM FIGHTS these dudes
i dont know where you got all this garbage where i compared it to kill bill
UH OH DID YOU KNOW I THINK ONE PIECE IS ABOUT PIRATING WHEN IT'S REALLY ABOUT MAKING PALS WITH EVERYONE AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PIRATING AT ALL!!!! BETTER WRITE AN ESSAY BOUT DAT
who cares
that's a totally fine and respectable point, but it only totally works in a bohemian society that treats and appreciates all art forms equally. movies and tv are way, way more popular an accessible than anything written in this society.

And all this time I thought Naruto was a manga about making ramen.
-
it's hard enough to do a decent anime/comic/movie. it's tougher pulling off a good adaptation.
This is your counterargument? So your philosophy basically sums up to ''if it's tough to do, don't bother''.
I don't know, man, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and just assume that slipped out unintentionally, because if that's really what your entire argument hinges on it makes you look pretty stupid, you have to admit.
Movie looks pretty cool. I haven't read the comic so I don't have much of a reference, but Edgar Wright is unquestionably the man.
Maybe it helps that the only thing I've seen with Michael Cera is Superbad, which I loved.
-

no, this is just my reply to taboo repeatidly saying, 'but, but..what if it's amazing. the crux of my reply to the that is the comic is already amazing, so a cartoon adaptation seems totally unnecessary. i'm not an animation-hater, but i'm not a big fan of anime and stuff in general, so i really don't care if the creator is anti animated adaptations of his comics. i was saying that yeah, it could be good, but it's more likely to be bad, too. the comic is most definitely good, so why even bother with a cartoon adaptation? just read the already existing and good comic. create something good exclusive to the animated form.
UH, I was quoting your own dopey chain of logic, goofy
where in anything that i said was i talking about genres or defending the series? everything i said that had to do with quality was about the medium. that's purely your own over-simplification, d00d.
Comics LITERALLY are glorified storyboards (unless you were to discover a new way to make comics that weren't SEQUENTIAL IMAGES IN A SPECIFIC ORDER).
if you've actually studied illustration or graphic design or anything and know how to do storyboards, you of all people should know that manga tends to resemble storyboarding, but most western comics definitely don't. with storyboarding the panels have to make sure every scene has really visually dramatic angle, looks nice, clean and simplistic, while with western comics the angles used tend to be less about angles and more about pushing the story forward. storyboards and manga tend to be way more intuitive to follow for a person who's never read a comic before.
it's way to broad a vague an kind of insulting to the medium as a whole to say any art that's sequential is just a storyboard–not to mention it not being the true, even at the most basic, ostensible level, in many cases.
Because when you make art, it's all about how popular it is!!!
following your dopey logic there, kid. by its nature doing an adaptation of something successful has almost nothing to do with personal artistic expression; that's my point about adaptations. it's all about reproducing the elements that made it successful or refining while converting to a different medium. if it were totally about some personal artistic expression, it'd be an original work instead of a remake of something that already exist.
i call it action packed because the plot can only go foreward if SCOTT PILGRIM FIGHTS these dudes
stupid me, calling things action-packed only when they're packed with action…

I don't know why, but I enjoyed the 'bread makes you fat' bit.
Some of Michael Cera's lines are just painful. I know he's corky and everything, but I just can't help but cringe at the delivery of some of the lines when he's supposed to be serious.
-
yeah
it's like they were told to say their lines devoid of any emotion whatsoever
I LiKE YOU WILL YOU GO OUT WITH ME BEEP BOOP

-
yeah

Why do I WANT to see a movie with robots that talk like that?
But seriously, I understand that they're trying to pull off weird concept with both characters being bizarre and emotionless, but it makes me not care about the main two. Scott feels like a moron that I could hardly care about, and Ramona just comes off as a complete bitch who's only fucking him cause she's bored.
Doing that makes the supervillian exboyfriends the most interesting characters of the movie, and they're all gonna die (or be defeated…..turning into coins is pretty much death in my eyes). It doesn't help that one of them is played by Chris Evans, and his few lines in the trailer have actually made me laugh.
-
Looks fine to me
I reserve all judgement for when I see the final movie
Apparently Brian O'Malley couldn't be happier with the final product
-
Yeah, I still want to see it. Maybe not in theaters though. Not because of my opinion towards it so far, but because trying to watch a movie in theaters has been like trying to pull teeth for my family lately.

no, we must continue to argue about this totally subjective topic as if our opinions are facts.

I kinda think all these arguments are stupid, like I read through most of the thread and it really all seems to span back to Micheal Cera, he has been continually cast to play the awkward kid but that's because he is Hollywood's awkward kid.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the comics and I'm pretty excited. It looks like they are going a good job of sticking to the original material. Cera can probably pull off the role too, Scott was pretty awkward he has his moments where he can easily switch from awkward uber nerd to heroic warrior. I was a little weary about it until the second trailer when they show the clip of Scott V.S Gideon, and he proclaims he will fight for Ramona because he loves her, it was very un-Cera.
My big issue with the movie isn't Cera, it's that I'm almost positive the ending will be completely different from whatever we get in Volume 6, O'Malley gave them "ideas" of what to do in the end, but the comic's ending could have completely changed by now. I just don't want a shoty Hollywood happy go-lucky ending if that's not what the comic gives us.
Fact is, we all new this would happen, hollywood has been grabbing comic property like mad since X-Men and Spidermans box office success. You just have to walk in with an open mind, maybe try to forget a bit about what your going into and just enjoy the movie your going to waste 10 dollars on.
I think Scott Pilgrim v.s the world has plenty of potential to be very enjoyable.
But like Holden Mc Neil said in Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back
"The Internet has given everybody in America a voice. For some reason, everybody decides to use that voice to bitch about movies. "

edgar wright and bryan o'malley have already stated that the movie and comic will, intentionally, have completely different endings. the comic had about three potential endings that bryan hadn't decided on yet around the time they were finalizing the movie script before production, and they decided to go with one ending, bryan's going with another.
bryan keeps saying that he's going way out of his way to try and make the ending of the comic as different (and better)than the movie ending as possible. it seems like a good idea since that way you can sort of pick which ending you like best?

It's nice to see they are adding some fresh bits, I might be going against fan code, but I really don't want to see a literal 100 percent perfect adaptation, I'm interested to see what creative changes have been set in place by the other contributors, I'm still damned excited.

i agree with this. some things just wouldn't work as well in live-action. there's always room to improve here and there with little tweaks, etc. not to mention, the way scott beats lucas lee wasn't exactly my favorite or an especially clever or hilarious win, anyway.
wallace's scene exit in that clip is the most hilarious thing ever!xD

PSN first, then eventually XBLA and PC.

he has plenty of awkward moments in the book. he spends most of the recent volumes twitching, sweating, and freaking out constantly. i do think cera's voice is waaaay softer and dorkier-sounding than the character should sound, but overall he seems to be playing scott like a pretty normal, (occasionally geeky)happy-go-lucky dude like he is in the comic.

International Trailer. Kicks the ass out of the other ones.

Wow. Yes. Wow. That really does the comic a lot more justice. The characters, the random game effects, the action sequences. Why is that not the official trailer?

Oh, and can anyone tell me who plays Gideon?

The question was rhetoric, but that's cool, I didn't even know international trailers varied from the official. Admittedly I'm no fan or follower of trailers, as they give far too many spoilers now-days.
On a seperate note, I'm torn on whether or not I like the comic version of the 1-UP, or if I would have preferred a goofy Michael Cera version to be more adaptive to the whole live-action thing. On the one hand I like the use of some of the real character art, and it works well given it's a friggin 1-UP, but on the other hand using a Michael Cera pic would have been one of those attention-to-detail things that give the film more personality. Or "who cares"?

have you seen the video game or the plushes and t-shirts yet?
almost everything except the actors themselves is using the designs from the comic.
http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=MEZ10543&mode=retail&picture=outi think the author said he's had to approve something like 90 designs that use the comic artwork, and like 5 that actually use cera. so yeah, i definitely think they should/are going to stick the comic art in the film as much as possible just so people who've never read the comic can make the connection for merchandising sake.

I just finished volume 1. After this and Empowered, it feels like I'm missing out ontoo much awesome comics.
I really liked how it switched fromand everyday life thing to a freaking video-game :D

Empowered is awesome. It'd be too easy to dismiss it as a fanservice book, but there's surprisingly alot of depth and a gasp developing storyline!
Oh yeah, Scott Pilgrim..AWESOME! ^_^;;;

I'm so excited for this movie. I am dragging all the people I know to the theater opening weekend.

Volume 1 is easily the worst out of the series. The first boy friend fight was atrocious.
2-5 easily make up for it though.
The real thing I love about Scott Pilgrim however, is the realistic dialogue. The characters talk in a way that flows like an actual conversation. I'm still impressed at how there will be an entire room of people talking, yet the flow rarely seems like "comic book dialogue".
