Before anyone says this should go to the american comics thread. know that this is 100% Canadian. What is scott pilgrim it is a indie graphic created by Bryan Lee O'Malley(who i think of him is the the oda of canada he's that good and im just say an)and is published by oni press. the story is about scott pilgrima a guy in his 20's who is in a band( but he him self thinks his band sucks for now)and lives in a single bedroom apartment with his gay friend wallace:wassat:. he was scorned by his old girlfriend and has'not been dating for 2 years. Until he meet this girl named Ramona Flowers who he really cant stop think about. They start dating, but the only way they can truly be together is if Scott can defeat Ramona's 7 evil ex-boyfriends. the fights are awesome the drama is between characters great the whole area is based in toronto and the the whole world is a mixture of video games and anime
its such a great story here is a link to his website and myspace(scott pilgrim the character has a myspace ha)

What's the word on the movie?
I read all 4 books thus far (only knew it took place in Canada by Book #3!), though found some of the game references to be a little off.
-
only thing i know is that the actor who is portraying scott pilgrim is michael cera( from arrested development and juno) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be Ramona Flowers (dont know the actor)
-
This book is published in America tho. Oni is an american company and Bryan Lee Omalley literally just became an american citizen, too. Tho I like that this isnt in the american comic thread since I read tons of american comics but HATE mainstream, superhero stuff and that's all I see in that thread.
You spoilered a little with the mention of the Envy thing in ur synopsis and you forgot the most important part! Him dating the hot 17 year old, chinese school girl Knives Chau!
But yeah, Omalley said One Piece art and Luffy's personality were a big influence on the Scott Pilgrim series! Even if you dont like comics, you should give this one a try! It's amazing and I consistantly whore it out and buy my friend's the first book to get them hooked!@supposidly they're shooting the movie this fall/winter. I know the actress who plays Ramona already started Kung fu training a while ago.

edit hey wait a minute you just did a major spoiler when you said that name
-
Envy is the sexiest character design in the book IMO :D
-
"Knives Chau:17 years old"
I never get tired of that and I don’t think I ever will.
I’m not going to call O'Malley a genius but he certainly knows the formula for a great graphic novel.
I just love his style, while some people would say its web comic quality, it has a sort of charming feel to it, like Oda’s and I’ve always been a sucker for thick outlines. However I don’t think making a movie is a good idea, if anything it should at least be animated but I feel that any adaptation, be it live action or animated would be a serious step down from the comic in terms of quality and overall enjoyment.
-
That web page scares me and the comic sounds kinda geeky but… okey, I will try to check it out. Just don't tell anybody about it~

Book 5 is out peeps.

Forgot all about this thread!
I really hate that there is an american comics thread all incompensing superhero books and mainstream crap like that. I LOVE comics but I tend to stick to the Indie stuff and only occasionally check out something more mainstream when it peaks my interest and seems a little more unique.any ways i didnt talk about knives because i didnt know how to write her in the synopsis. oh and i thought he was still Canadian
I think ppl in an anime forum would be more likely to be interested if they knew he was kind of a 23 yr old slacker who dates a 17 yr old asian schoolgirl who hangs all over him. Also there's Kim effing Pine!
Yeah, I got book 5 and it's great but…different than the rest. I reread it a bunch of times before I realized what was great about it. It is the "downer" book of the series, though. And this series is soooo popular despite it still being indie. I had to go to THREE comic shops before I found one who still had a copy in stock!
As for the animation thing, MAl, the creator has stated that he's not a big fan of animation and prefers manga/comics to anime and stuff overall. So even if he was offered the proposal to do a Scott Pilgrim anime or something, he'd reject it. He also told me personally that he is a BIG One Piece fan(he mentions it a lot in interviews) and said the artstyle was big influence on the art for Scott Pilgrim with the way he draws the girls and stuff.
-
I actually heard on Toonzone that there's going to be animated segments in the "Scott Pilgrim" movie.
-
Yeha, I remember reading that as a quote from one of the actors, so it's probably true. I know there's going to be CG.

Then again we do tend to talk about most mainstream manga in the Other mangas and animes forum so…I LOVE comics but I tend to stick to the Indie stuff and only occasionally check out something more mainstream when it peaks my interest and seems a little more unique.
Psssssssssssssst, unbeknowst to most readers, Ghost Rider, Nova and the GL series are better than most mainstream stuff:ninja:

Not to mention that the artstyle resembles Japanese manga a lot, especially in Book 5.

Funny you should mention that as I too felt an OP vibe from his art.
BTW was that a Gurren Lagann reference! when Ramona disappeared?
-
Okey, I forgot all about this. Will read, will read. Honestly, while I'm very glad both exists, nowadays I'm more into American comics than, you know, Japanese comics.
-
^Make sure you've read Fables and Criminal ;)
Could someone post what other series this book makes references to? So far I count X-Men and Gurren Lagann…
-
Actually, I do read Fables. Although I'm not up to date with it. But I have never heard of Criminal before. I will check it out . My current favourite is probably The Walking Dead series.
-
I watched Gurren Lagann a year or whenever it came out ago, so i have no idea what scene that resembled from GL. Although, I highly doubt it's intentional. GL wasn't based on a manga and the creator has made it pretty clear he's not a big fan of animation over comics…
There are lots of referrences to stuff. I know he said Beck and NANA were huge influences as well as OP and Saint Seiya. I saw a Trapnest(the band from Nana) logo on a bus in the early chapters. Then there's Scott's "Shonen Hero" pose and shout when he asks for the dishwasher job. The art in Vol4 and on throws back a lot to Osamu Tezuka, too. And ofcourse the famous Parappa referrence!XDD
-
oh i prayed for this thread to come back
andi finally got volume 5! I liked when Scott fought that robot in wearing THE SPIRIT costume(while most of his friends kept a conversation going with 2 of Ramona's evil ex boyfriend's) and i hope the 7th volume is Scott verses his doppelganger
oh may someone please post something on the indie's comic thread -

Walking Dead is great, Kirkman writes it doesn't he?
BTW isn't Book 6 the last entry in the series? Or will there be more?
-
i hope the 7th volume is Scott
Book 6 is the finale one.
Is there an indie comics thread.I too, read Walking Dead, but haven't caught up in a while since my friend's buying them and I havent borrowed in a while.
LOL! I just noticed Scott was dressed as the spirit(maybe)!! Maybe MAL expected that movie to be more popular?? -
Well since a thread already existed, it made sense just to update the old one, unless there's already a movie thread for it. The first movie poster was released today and i've got to say I love the tagline. You can see it here.

I'm concerned Michael Cera won't be able to play the overly sarcastic Scott. I guess I just have trouble believing a confident Michael Cera, as most of his roles have been about teenage angst. It certainly doesn't help that I am a huge Arrested Development fan. Having said that, I have no expectations for this movie. The comics I enjoy more for the acid trip sensation than the actual content, and I am afraid I am not nerdy enough to get all the references. Wow, it's been over a year since I read any of this stuff too…
-
I enjoy the comics, they're quirky and had an interesting premise, and I look forward to the last one coming. From what I've heard, the movie is pretty faithful to the feel of the material, and sounds like its actually going to cover all 6 volumes, which is kind of crazy from a crammed/cut content standpoint.
I have some hopes for it.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the series, I just have trouble imagining a live action movie (with Michael Cera) fitting into the same element that the comic books have. I generally set my expectations low for these types of flicks so that, worst case scenario, I am pleasantly surprised. I'm certainly surprised (and worried) about them trying to pack all 6 volumes into one movie though! @_@
-
Anyone who doubts Micheal Cera's acting needs to see Youth in Revolt. He starts out as "Micheal Cera" and develops an asshole persona called Francois Dillinger. Its quite amuzing.
I can't wait for an actual trailer for this.
-
Been a huuuuuge fan of the comic for a few years now and finally the movie adaptation –directed by Edgar Wright of Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz fame--is getting released this summer! also: i think it's cool to mention here that the comic author named One Piece as a big influence on the style of the series.
the BAD-ASS trailer:

Alright! Gonna watch it later on, hopefully it'll live up to the book =3
-
O_O
rebooting brain
-
THAT WAS MAGNIFICENT!!!!!
Definitely going to watch this.
-
Hori Sheet; They Used The Street Fighter Alpha 3 Announcer!

Looks interesting except Michael Cera playing the "I'm awkward all the time" guy again:getlost:

So, I totally pirated Scott Pilgrim 1 -5. Good stuff. Though, now I don't like Michael Cera playing Scott. He doesn't fit the role at all.
-
Zyordius, I was getting ready to semi-defend him if people really were leaving notes about him in his trailer and on the call things, but then I realized it was fake and felt sad.
-
Hope this turns out good. I've got Scott Pilgrim 1 and 2, and they're awesome.
-
To be precise, he didn't cite One Piece as an inspiration for the series or anything, it's just one of the things he was reading at the time.
Anyway, this movie's going to kick ass.
-
I'm not sure on that trailer, the fight scenes looked good but for some reason something didn't seem right with the beginning beforehand.
-
Scott Pilgrim now? Oh yes!
And were there really sound effects inthe trailer?
-
Finally! It looks like a fine adaptation…a reason to watch it in a real movie.
-
Yea looks pretty good glad they have the effects.
-
It looks retarded.
Good enough for me. -
-
This movie looks like sex.

he told me personally on the scott pilgrim forum that it's his favorite
series out of the current stuff in shonen jump–he gets sent US shonen jump for free, too! he said the art style, how all the girls look alike (kind of intentionally and kinda unintentionally) and the HUGE, DARK irises in their eyes were all a huge influence on scott pilgrim's style when he first began the books..he mentioned Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad as an influence in the beginning, too.
when he says "one piece was a big influence' i think it was pertaining to the
art style in the series, though. -
I can't wait for this film :D Does it remind anyone else of the game no more heroes as in the sound effects and the outlandishness of it?
