And after reading that, Greg's life ended with his brain oozing out his nose into a puddle of mush on the floor.
And the World was safe again.

Everyone calm down. I think we can all agree that 2009 came before 2010!
-
Ha, i started watching from episode 60 :L
Why???
I bet someone suggested that the story actually gets good after they enter the Grand Line or something like that because you thought the series was too long to catch up… So you skipped the entire crew (at ep 60) meeting, character intros, where some basics at those areas are explained, THAT ARLONG ARC, etc etc etc?!
If you're not reading manga also (which you obviously not since you asked about Shanks), starting from ep 60 was a big mistake.
Seriously, you're like missing the soul of something here.
I believe many people here would suggest that you pause the episode you're on right now and watch those first 60 eps in one go...
-
Ha, i started watching from episode 60 :L
go slap yourself and restart the show at ep. 1 :getlost::getlost::getlost::getlost::getlost:
-
Actually, start at chapter one.

Well the most recent parts with Pain and such i think are pretty dark,
Hahahahahahahahaha. No. Kishi was just trying too hard to make the "psychotic villain". Which is probably the easiest kind of villain to make, seeing as they're almost always psychotic. You just have to tweak them the right way. And Pain could've been darker.
but i also have not seen many anime so i don't really have much to compare it to.
Something lighthearted you can compare Naruto to is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni . What.
So far the answers are curbing my worries, though i have to ask what the hell is up with Ussop's (sp) nose?
…
You're so awesome puffin. Thank God you just barely joined in 2009.
Yea, 2010 sucks…oh wait.
-
@Vegard:
No, the longest filler we've had would be the fillers between Alabasta and Jaya. 13 filler-episodes in a row.
I think they ment filler story arcs. So it was like 3, Post Alabasta, Goat Island, and Rainbow mist.
-
This is one of those 'WTF?!' moments that we talked about.
Seriously, you're missing a lot. I suggest not finishing those recap episodes until you watch episodes 1-59 since knowing the pasts of each StrawHat prior takes away from the East Blue saga.
-
Can I ask why, Empringle?
-
i did not want to run into a situation where I had watched 100+ episodes and virtually nothing had changed.
Welcome to Detective Conan, my friend.
I'm actually pretty shocked that One Piece hasn't tried to pull the whole "ZOMG! Evil!Luffy from the future/Hueco Mundo/piece of meat PWNS Luffy and killz hi$ crew!!1!" plotline. Then again, this is Oda a.k.a. God we're talking about.
2010 is the year of Canadian ownage at the Olympics. That's enough reason to call it cool.
-
To enjoy Odas greatness more you should try to avoid filler episodes
Here is a list with every episode:
http://arlongpark.net/Anime/Episodes
Like I said try to avoid the filler episodes but look exactly what is standing there.
For example Episiode 61 is Half Filler which means the second half should be watched. -
There's probably no logic or rhythm as to why he did it.
He probably just did it. Without thinking and on a whim. Randomly. With no foreshadowing or thought put into it whatsoever.
One of those.

Filler should be abolished.

@JERK:
Filler should be abolished.
Then how would the anime keep from catching up to the manga?
-
Kids these days are awesome. One starts at episode 60, the other guy wants something "realistic and dark like Naruto". Go you.

I base my life by naruto's teachings.

Eh… Not really.

Wow i really stirred up people with my thread didn't I? Naruto so far is the only anime i've ever watched, so for me yes it's dark because it's the only one i have watched and don't know what your concept of dark is. I don't understand why people are getting so angry about my question, and I never mentioned "realistic", it's an anime for god sakes I'm not looking for realism.
-
Most fans of Naruto can be converted as long as you calmly explain why they're not feeling anything from part 2.
-
It's the tv stations that are the problem.
Stuff like one piece gets a use it or lose it slot, and thus they have to put something up, no matter what garbage it is.
And this doesn't just mean filler, the quality of the manga adaptation is damaged as well, as stuff gets lengthened out so they can use less chapter per episode. Dragon Ball suffered from this particularly badly during the namek stuff.
One Piece got stuff like filler garbage in the middle of the davy back fight, some horrifically drawn out stuff in thriller bark, and the entirety of enies lobby.
-

No ones talking about realism, Naruto is not dark in any sense of the word.
-
I thought Ice Hunters arc was terrible.
Shitty filler kid.
Shitty filler pirate crew who's backstory we DON'T need to know
Strawhats get owned by… badguys who's schtick is ice sports? And let me remind you these jobbers give the crew a hard time after they dealt with CP-fucking-9!!
Pretty much my thoughts exactly.
Ice Hunters might seem… innocuous on the surface (even "good" to some) but when you stop for 3 seconds to think about how fucking stupid and boring it is, those are precisely the conclusions you should come to.G8 is great. Ocean Memory is interesting. And I honestly didn't know that the Davy Back extras were filler at first (I pretty much marathoned the anime 4 years ago before going through the manga). Maybe I'd look at that content differently if I had known it was filler from the start... not sure.
-
@CCC:
Ocean Memory is interesting.
The idea and the beginning of Ocean is good…but the development and the ending is bad u_u. (oh and the game was pretty good).
-
I never watched fillers except the ones created by Oda.
Although I heard that this spa island was a boob paradise. -
Shanks is Luffy and Ace's father, that's their connection.
Can't believe no one mentioned that yet.
I mean, its a bit of a spoiler, but its established so early on, and you're already past that point…

I've started watching One Piece and i am currently on episode 10, i've heard it's a great Anime but something i'm concerned about is the light hearted feel of the show, does it become more serious at any point along the way? Are there character conflicts, development, etc? All i've seen so far is a rubber kid that, besides his relationship with that red headed pirate, has absolutely no conflicts with himself and is set in what he wants with no other qualms in the world. I don't know if this will hold my attention. Take Naruto, for example, he has the internal conflict with the demon and society shunning him and it makes for great character development and story telling. I ramble some, so in essence i'm asking if the show eventually takes routes that have darker stories and actual character development and and realism and such.
ahaha.. yup, that's the reason why i switch to one piece from being a naruto / bleach fan.. the first time i see one piece drawing, i really did not like it but then somehow i just got up to 5 - 10 episodes and i have a great feeling in the series. the light feeling it has when being watched, lots of twist and conflicts and the lovable crew of luffy.
I had watched most of the episodes until now and i did not even feel a single gloomy and dark atmosphere feeling.well, i'm watching naruto from now (shippuuden for the first time when it was released) and yeah.. One Piece has a big difference than naruto.. it's just i did not feel what i felt at one piece when i watch it first.
well, just go for it. the series is long but you will certainly love it!
great story + epic battles + fun to watch.. that's one piece ^_^
-
great story + epic battles + fun to watch.. that's one piece ^_^
If you want to put it in a nutshell…then yeah.
-
@Badass:
Can I ask why, Empringle?
You can, and i just sort of thought i would try and get to the interesting start coz i've watched so many animes that start slow :L
Just wondering whats so amazing about the arlong arc?!?!
And also i have seen bits of it, like the guy wih the chop chop fruit and the michael jackson guy; but i sort of found it a bit dull :/?
-

If naruto is the only anime you've ever watched then why are you on a one piece fansite?
-
I base my life by naruto's teachings.
Let's see how far that gets you.
Yes, listen to robby. Don't forget the part where he turns into a rabid zombie and eats everyone. One of the best highlights of the show.

Congrats on making it to episode 9?
Ugh. "I won't watch this because I don't want to. But I sort of do, but I sort of don't. Then again if I do then this whole problem could be solved. But I don't want to…but if I don't then I won't know. But if I do then I would go against my want to not watch it."
The arlong arc is the one that had gotten most One Piece fans hooked.
-
Although I heard that this spa island was a boob paradise.
Which is why people should watch it.
-
Basically if you want a brooding darker anime then i suchest 'Death Note'
Which was brilliant till volume 11.
Personally i always prefered Bleach to naruto because ichigo is less cheesy, plus the battles interest me more.
But One Piece is pretty good, sometimes the battles are two long when they are jokey ones, sometimes it's a bit protentious: But for the most part it's hilarious and well paced. Plus the wonderful characters.
On an unrelated note Is it just me or does every main anime character eat a disproportionate amount of food? Apart from ichigo of course, but he;s ginger.
-
Davy Back filler is my guilty pleasure. I love it.
-

I apologise for my reasoning not being concise. Basically, I'm to lazy and to indulged in the Enis Lobby arc to care.
-
The characters REALLY develop and there will be internal conflicts if you aren't won over by the time of the arlong arc… you will be then :D arlong arc still is one of the best imo it really is an emotenial arc and you WILL cry sometimes even i did :D
-
Yes, I can understand that. I'm sorry if I sounded a bit too mean with that statement. It's just a little jarring to start a thread asking a question which could be solved just by watching the first few episodes.
Oh, and I think RuranLD meant that, other than One Piece, he/she has only seen Naruto.
-
@Kairouseki:
One word: Berserk
i agree 100% with this, Naruto is pink kittens and baby blue mittens compared to Berserk but for crying out loud do NOT watch the anime, because it actually sucks and it is sencored. Onemanga.com deleted THE MANGA from there site also because off it's "mature" aka dark content.
anyway, you are barking up the wrong tree here. If you want dark, watch seinen. You are watching shonen which is aimed at a bit younger audience and you won't get much darkness at all. It is mostly based around adventures and fun which is actually the romance within One Piece. It does get a bit darker but don't expect anything horrorlike to happen.
as for characterbuilding, if you started at ep 60 you have missed an important part in the characteristics of the crew up to that point. Watch it from episode 1 and you'll understand. There are important things in those eps that go right up to the recent story line in many ways.Mark my words and start READING One Piece from chapter 1 and watch the anime also. You will be more fullfilled. I promise you
-
Onemanga.com deleted THE MANGA from there site also because off it's "mature" aka dark content.
Actually, they deleted it because Dark Horse fucking told them to.
-
One Piece is one of the only anime I know that adapts the manga almost precisely. No filler crap is put into episodes and that makes the episodes a lot more enjoyable.
-

I do not remember any filler in Enies lobby, aside from those random origin story flash backs.
Now that you mention it the Davy Back fight in the anime did have some extra stuff, but that hole mini arc was stupid to begin with.
I have never watched the Thiller bark part, there was a lot of filler in that anime arc?
-
@AMS:

He's saying it was drawn out a lot. (Which it was) If you read the manga side-by-side or just know it at all it's VERY obvious at times. At other times it flows a bit better but it's still pretty dragged out.
-

That was a funny joke.

That was a funny joke.
I suppose it is not 100 percent true, but compared to any of the other animes I have seen it is fairly accurate. You may have little stuff like the criminal episode having extra stuff (which was funny) but they do not drag out a single fight to 7 episodes while adding extra stuff to it, like say DBZ.
-

oh,
personally I loved that arc on the anime, it is probably my favorite arc of the entire series so far (anime or manga).
-
Honestly when it comes to filler in any series, it's all about the pacing. I don't mind if you have 3 or 4 episodes of filler, but when you have 13 fucking episodes one after the other, that's a completely different story. I wouldn't say to skip all of it, because they all have something decent about them, except for the Goat Island stuff. Maybe just take breaks every 3 or 4 episodes so you don't lose your mind, unless the story actually starts to grip you.
