The first half of East Blue is a bit of a rough start for most people, but once you get to Arlong, if you aren't won over by then, you will be.
I've introduced this series to people who think such things are beneath them, and a week or two later, they're asking me tons of questions about it.

The best part of the whole arc is when Usopp and Sanji are fighting the figure skating duo. Sanji is useless against the female, but Usopp get's off a lucky shot with his Kabuto and nails her right in the face! Funny shit right there.
stay tuned . i started watching the crappy 4kids dub but it was still a great story . watch the arlong arc and u will go through a crap load of emotions
If your only worry is that the fillers will get as annoying or never-ending as Naruto, then watch all of them. This is coming from someone who's seen every single episode of the great "Naruto Filler Saga" arc and forgotten 90% of them in the process.
Except for the Goat Island one, that one demands a skip.

The last fight with Luffy and Don was alright as well, even though Luffy could've honestly owned the guy in a couple minutes.
And honestly, I thought Lil' was a pretty acceptable filler kid. Jiro and Phoenix can go ahead and fall off a cliff though.

Just keep on watching/reading and it'll get better i promise. just keep an open mind and it's much better if you find everything out yourself.
Ye if you have survived naruto you can handle one piece, heck some you won't even know are filler which happened to me twice
I've started watching One Piece and i am currently on episode 10, i've heard it's a great Anime but something i'm concerned about is the light hearted feel of the show, does it become more serious at any point along the way? Are there character conflicts, development, etc? All i've seen so far is a rubber kid that, besides his relationship with that red headed pirate, has absolutely no conflicts with himself and is set in what he wants with no other qualms in the world. I don't know if this will hold my attention. Take Naruto, for example, he has the internal conflict with the demon and society shunning him and it makes for great character development and story telling. I ramble some, so in essence i'm asking if the show eventually takes routes that have darker stories and actual character development and and realism and such.

Eventually, the light-hearted feel of Luffy and his crew is something you come to appreciate as everything else around them gets darker and darker. That isn't to say that there won't be some crying and character development from them though; I think if you keep watching/reading with your current mindset, you'll be completely blown away.

But like everyone has said, the Arlong arc is where things really start to get better, although I personally didn't really dislike any of the early episodes. You're only a couple dozen episodes away from that point.

All you're ever going to get from the series is a rubber boy that wants to see amazing things, do incredible things and have as much freedom as possible.
If you want anything more 'realistic' just continue reading Naruto or some other fecal ink splot.
Keep watching, One Piece still astounds me with every new chapter (Or episode).
Well, One Piece is more of a screwball and lighthearted series than Naruto, at least at the outset. It does take itself more seriously later on, but its more about the world and characters around him rather delving into the psychology of Luffy himself. That is done much, much later in the manga.
Particularly in the first volumes, its much more about overcoming enormous odds in order to achieve dreams and ambition. Its psychological at times, but don't expect it to turn into some sort of gritty, noirish series
The one of the most enjoyable parts of the series is watching seemingly unrelated facets and events of the one piece world eventually come together later on.
I've always wondered if the Funimation dub adds an extra layer of enjoyment to these episodes.
Though, really, if you didn't mind those episodes with Apis before Loguetown, you won't mind these either.
I'd say just watch them. They're filler, but you might like them.
Spa started good but got stupid. The backstory seemed lame, and the whole thing with the villain trying to blow away a little girl with a big ole cannon seemed out of place.
Don't listen to these noobs. Stop watching OP. It never loses track of exactly what it presented you with in the first episodes.
Continue watching a 'serious' 'realistic' series like Naruto.

Let me put it this way: I envy you because you're starting to see OP now. You have no idea how amazing is the adventure you are about to watch/read.
I kind of know what you're feeling because it took me about 25 episodes to really get stuck in the series but, believe me, just a few more episodes and you're gonna start asking yourself "Why the hell did I waste so much time with naruto? :blink:"

Ussop vs. Daddy the Father is good.
Sanji Iron chef battle is good.
Zoro helping Johnny and Yosaku is good.
Sanji cooking in Water 7 is good.
Ice Hunters is incredibly bland and not worth it.
All others stink.

Considering most of the filler lasts about 10-15 episodes anyways It's not so bad. Especially if it's already finished. You can go quickly through them.
Well actually the right number would be 1-11 episodes. The longest filler we've had so far was the G8 arc, and that was only 11 episodes.

Either way, your phrasing could have been better, but coming on a board dedicated to the series you have questions on, and then asking if the show has any real development or character growth after only watching 10 episodes out of the current 460 is just a bit presumptuous.
Give the show a chance to develop and see if it answers your questions and meets your expectations.

I'm sorry, i did not mean to insult people - as of late I've just been very busy with work and so I've been trying to find a anime i can load up on my iPod and watch during moments of downtime, i had heard good things about One Piece - and it was hundreds of episodes in so it was a great match. I just wanted to make sure that the anime would develop further, i did not want to run into a situation where I had watched 100+ episodes and virtually nothing had changed. One again i meant no insult to anyone or the series. I'm up to the fishmen arc and it's pretty great, I'm enjoying the anime so far and the story of Nami was pulling on the ol' heart strings some (i kept imagining my daughter in that situation).
Trust me mate, you will fall in love with this thing. Unless you already have. :O

what do you mean how it came to be?
Shanks was chilling and drinking beer on the island Luffy was born/grew up on and they met. Luffy an impresionable young kid who thought pirates were cool hung around him non stop until sooner or later he impressed Shanks.
there was nothing special like shanks looked for luffy before hand or anything. or at least that we know of. no indication that shanks knew who luffy was at all regarding grandpa or dad. he was just a little kid who befriended shanks on one of his many stops on his voyage.
or what flashback you talking about? isn't there only one flashback with luffy/shanks and thats when he is a little kid in like episode 3 or something

ah i'm guessing your watching the enies lobby episodes when they are about to jump off the bridge and we see everyones flashback again.

So you never saw Arlong? But as another poster said, Shanks does his own stuff int he series. He doesn't idly sit by and wait for Luffy to accomplish his dreams.

It is a great downtime show. The core feeling it gives off remain positive and uplifting despite the numerous world issues within the OP-verse and the trials the main characters face. To see a young boy with the strength and character to remain so open, eager, friendly, and mostly carefree throughout a most difficult journey really does lift the spirit.
Overhead the Bakhahtross hangs motionless upon the air
