Best game console of all time?

Didn't find a topic to cover old consoles, so I made this one. I don't really want a poll either, 'cause I'd prefer if people explained themselves.

Anyway, which do you think is the greatest game console ever and why?

Personally, I have to pick the Super Nintendo. I love RPGs and the SNES gave us EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, the three best Final Fantasies, several Dragon Quest games, three games in the Mana series, and two Lufia games just to name a few!

And the platformers? Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario All-Stars, Super Metroid, Kirby Superstar, Act Raiser, Donkey Kong Country, etc.

I also appreciate the great libraries of the N64 and the Playstation, but the SNES surpasses them both in my opinion.

Not everyone will agree. My personal favorite console is either the GC or N64. It'd be the SNES but I didn't have it much time.

Anything Nintendo makes is pretty much going to be the best console of that generation. So for me NES on down. Excluding the Virtual Boy but the Nintendo 3DS is an apology for that so I'll take it.

I'd say either the SNES or the N64. I wasn't around when the SNES was released, though, so I haven't played it all that much.

Can't say I have, I generally stick to well known games so as to decrease my chances of getting a shitty one.

From a brief glance at wikipedia the combat system looks pretty interesting. I've never played a game where you can choose to attack with either your left or right fist.

I was a Segatard when i was a kid, feeling all mighty with my Master System (and later Genesis) while giving Nintendo the finger. Then i finally got a SNES and thought "oh crap..this is GOOD".
Even though i had a PSX and PS2 afterwards, great consoles of course, they never gave me the same good times i had with the old Snes.

Personally, I'll say the PS2 because why? There was a ton of good games. There were a crapload of bad ones too but atleast back then developers were not much fixated in pushing the console's limits to break a buck. These days, the only games that gets the rep they deserve is highly advertised "AAA" titles. Most of the time these titles are in a genre I won't spend a buck on.

I could say the same for the PS1 and NES, but that was before my time owning a console(too poor to afford one at time).

Also, I agree that the GBA is awesome, since if you have the right games it's a portable SNES with Pokemon, Advance Wars, Superstar Saga and Mother 3 tacked on! EDIT: Ye gods, I forgot Golden Sun!

DS needs more love for Jump Ultimate Stars, Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton.

The N64 and PS were my first two consoles. I finally went back and got a SNES a couple years later, and man, I had more fun on that than either of those two. But the N64 and PS have a place in my heart.

That's incorrect as well as having nothing to do with what makes the best console ever.

Snes is so great majorly because of the refinements made to many genres that came about during its time. A lot of Nes games I loved back in the day seem a bit sparse today. Not so with their snes iterations - try going from Metroid to Super Metroid. Look at Zelda to Zelda 3. Super Mario Bros 3 is the only one of Nintendo's big 3 that manages to hang with it's successor.

Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest V pretty much got everything right about RPG's between them, and and that was 15 years ago and most games today still manage to foul up by not taking note.

SNES, easily.

Some argument can be made for the playstation. But most of those games have dated really badly, especially in terms of graphics or early 3-D platformers.
