Welcome back Stephen!

Hey, glad to see you're still around.
-
out of the loop. But I have heard your name quite a few times in regards to awesome translating.
Given other member reactions, I'll go ahead and say good to have you back sir!
-
Oh man. I think i'm actually gonna cry outta happiness. :cwy: Awesome man. Glad to have you back.

hockey/ambition – I used ambition the first few times it came up because that was the dictionary definition. I haven't seen any usage of the word or the concept in-universe that really makes sense with that strict definition (and it's easier to project/imagine as a tangible force from the Japanese term than from the English), so I can see the merit in leaving it untranslated because that way its a magical unfamiliar power that also has a magical unfamiliar name (sub in: mana, chi, aura, whatever other RPG synonym for magic points) to all us roundeyes.
But the short answer is that it doesn't really matter because we all know what it is and what the names are.
Some of the most common expression the word haki compasses is intimidation, imposing presence, and majesty. I never really thought about it as ambition until you used it, but it does definitely have that meaning suggested as well. And I think it fits the One Piece context pretty well.
However, when the word "haki" is used in common Japanese (separate from the mythical usages in One Piece), we have to keep in mind that it's has these other characteristics and not necessary literally ambition.
I've seen some people in various English forums that took your translation a little too literal as ambition, and expanded theories on it.
Which, at that point, they are taking it out of context based on iteration of a definition. I think they miscomprehended your choice of the word.I usually don't translate it simply because I only do summaries and spoiler pics, with no intention of localization or scanlation usage. Same as Shichibukai, Admiral code names, etc.
But I believe they SHOULD be translated in localization context, it's just not my job.Anyways, welcome back Stephen.

Welcome Back Stephen.

Reading Stephens scripts with added puns and character personality could often be nearly as fun as reading the actual chapters - or in the case of when Saint charlos was on screen, even funnier.
Welcome back, definitive voice of reason.
-
Happy day for One Piece.
Welcome back Stephen! -
Welcome back man, everyone really appreciates your work and it's been a pain not to have your perfect translations around.
-
Hello Stephen, you don't know how much I missed your translations and how much it meant for me. (Especially the Naoki Urasawa-ones)
Straight to the point(s):
Will you translate the missing chapters from "Pluto"? I am STILL wondering about the last sentence of BRAU-1589 concerning Atom's "heart" and so on and hoped for any real explanation for it since you stopped…
And will you put up translations of Urasawa's "Billy Bat"? I really hope for it, because you were the one translator who got Urasawa's "voice" in the best way.
Thank you so much for that. Really. -
Nope, nothing else is going to happen. Just One Piece.
Billy Bat is pretty good though–I'm enjoying it way more than Pluto and the latter half of 20th Century Boys.
-
Ooow missed this thread. It seems like yesterday we waved you goodbye, now you're back!
I can't wait to read your new stuff. Welcome back man. -
Awesome news!!!
Welcome back Stephen! -
Super duper. fist pump
I remember back when i got into OP for a second time in 07 or 08 (i tried before earlier but i just could not handle the horrible scans and gave up) i would be reading the horrible quality scans of the early arcs and what i would do is just look at a page, completely ignore the script and then go over to your site for an actually readable translation. It took for ever but it was the only way.
I majorly appreciate what you've done man. Thanks a tonne.

It's certainly a good read like any of Urasawa's works, but I kinda liked the straight forward story telling of Pluto more than the extreme trippiness of Billy Bat so far.
Nothing will ever top Master Keaton series for me, of course.
-
Who are you??
Kiddin', I heard a lot about you actually. Welcome back!!

That's why I like it. I've read seven long series from Urasawa now so I've seen pretty much anything he can offer. At this point the only way he can stay truly intriguing is by hitting his extremes rather than rehashing his usual stuff. Otherwise he'd just be like Adachi recycling his material every time out.

BOMP
Quick status update: Revisions are proceeding well, I'm close to the end of Skypiea currently and ALMOST everything before that has been completely picked over and is in ship-shape condition. There are billions of minor changes and rewritten lines and I am super excited about the progress being made. Once I get through say, Enies Lobby my work should be 95% finished. I haven't uploaded any of these to my website but I have a plan for this which will be explained in time.
Currently busy moving out this weekend so I won't have time for much OP work in the next week or two but I still remain optimistic about getting this gargantuan task finished up by the end of the year so I can get started on "new" material (v56 or thereabouts).
Also, I will be on the OP podcast again with Zach and Ed (and Greg?) sometime this month so keep your eyes peeled for that.
-
I will look forward to it.
-
Great stuff .

welcome back … you're the best ...

How about I make this a habitual monthly news update until I'm finally done with this monster revision.
I THINK I am pretty much done re-re-re-re-re-re-revising all the East Blue-Alabasta material, which is a Very Good Thing because now I can (finally) fully dedicate my OP time to steamrolling onward in the larger ongoing Revision process, which is currently closing in on the end of Skypiea. Unfortunately (or fortunately, from my personal finances standpoint) I have a ton of paying work over the next six weeks, which will likely take some time/energy away, but the good news is that during and after the Water Seven/Enies Lobby mega-arc the text revision process should be getting a whole lot easier. I think that once I hit Thriller Bark, the formatting style I was using at the time is almost identical to what I use now, so that will essentially reduce the process to a simple "read -> fix typo -> done!"
On a side note, I'm a fan of short hair on women. What have you done, Oda?!
-
Short hair on women owns.

Yes, please .
-
Again, thank you stephen for doing all of this. It is seriously awesome. Also, a monthly update sounds great, just so we have an idea of what's going on.
-
@JERK:
Short hair on women owns.
When it is not top hair, sure.

Well, what else could it possibly mean?
So, what kind of gleason score did your biopsy indicate?
(Seriously though, I have no idea what this thread is about..)

I'm sorry, but I just had to quote this line in particular for truth.
Though, this thread has become more of a "fan over Stephen" thread if anything. Should we just leave it alone until more news comes by if needed?

I miss stephen's work, it was the easiest place to find newer SBS translated!Does anyone know where i can find the voice actors' interviews?
