Great episode. I really liked the part were everyone goes crazy (Mr 2, Ivankov, other Okama) and is going on a rampage. xD
Giant Ivankov head was even creepier than in the manga. HELL WINK!
I liked that shot where you can see Mr 1 and Inazuma, side to side, that was great because they have similar abilites xD (but Inazuma is cooler. VOTE FOR INAZUMA! (<– shameless plug 4 tournament))
The part were Ace stares at the sky was kind of dragged out. And the part were the Blackbeard Pirates enter Impel Down wasn't a big HOLY SHITZ-moment like in the manga. Could have been handled better.
I thought the flasback were you could see the misadventures of Buggy and Mr 3 was totally weird because the music was so unfitting. It was so sad music altough the Buggy/Mr 3-adventures were nothing but comic relief.
Reminded me of the scene in Thriller Bark where Perona does her Enel-face and that sad music plays. WTF
overall great episode.
Am I the only person here who actually loved the parts with Hannyabal? :[

Nope .
Found myself skipping to parts I was interested in, but it seemed like an okay episode. Shiryu's betrayal was as awesome as expected.
I like how Buggy said that up until now they were only a comedy relief but their adventures were so hard for them.
And I do not like the size of Teach and his band. They were over the top big in manga for me-I can get over the size ofTeach or Burgess, But even Auger and Lafitte? Somehow via the views and angles Oda smoothes this but in that episode crew is Moria-size. And that is awful. I recall Teach being one-and-half height of muscular men, like Franky but not as big that jailers' heads were near his prostate. There are so many ogres coming up(all admirals are doubleheight, and other guys we'll see) so those mistakes really anger me.
I will assassinate the heads of Toei one day.

I know what scene you mean and I also tought that the Blackbeard Pirates were huge first, but then I realized that it was just the angle. You saw the shadows of the Blackbeard Pirates in front of you and you could see the fodder in the background, so it looked like the Blackbeard Pirates were huge.

Of course not, Hannyabal is the underrated star of this arc!
It was basically his episode and I loved it.
so from the preview will the next ep cover[hide]Luffy's fight with Hanyabal[/hide]? if not screw Toei, the pacing in this ep was damn slow
Toei taking the half of every chapter is completely ruining the pacing of the arc. I bet next week's cliffhanger will be Hannyabal appearing.

This episode covered pretty much a whole chapter (in pages).
Half of 541 and half of 542.
Oda's humour in Hannyabal's case is fantastic…when he thinks of grabbing some snacks LOL ! I mean I often do it myself. When difficulties arise I go to do sth irrelevant to the case like eating snacks.

I think the title of this episode should be changed to 'Hannyabal's Bad Day'.
It starts of well and then, Riot on Level 2, Okamas and Shichibukai on Level 4,
Blackbeard on level 1. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!
How will he ever become the Warden now?
Find out next week!
The yami power animation isnt anything special unlike Croc's power.
When Blackbeard N' Pals are walking across the pier, the angle gives the impression that they're all twenty feet tall.
The hell?

Hard to do something special with a power made up entirely of black.
Of all the new characters of Impel Down, Hannyabal and Shiryuu are probably the two best characters introduced in this arc. Magellan and Inazuma are ok, Sadi-chan and Ivankov are just plain annoying, and Saldeath is kinda boring. Jimbei is cool, but he was introduced back in the Arlong Arc (or at least mentioned).
Hannyabal is awesome because he's a humor character. Almost every scene he's in has a laugh. He's selfish, quirky, and just downright fun to watch.
Shiryuu, on the opposite side of the spectrum, is awesome. From his natural panache to the almost psychotic gleam in his eyes when he holds his sword (anybody think it's one of the Kitetsu?), this guy just reeks of win.
With that said, this episode was ok. Buggy and Mr. 3 were fun (breaking the 4th wall again), the fight scenes seemed a bit off, and Onigumo's voice rocks. And Hannyabal and Shiryuu.
…

The hell?
The Marines like stocking up on Mini Soldiers. Makes storage efficient.

.
Check the manga page, Oda did the same.
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/one_piece/v56/c542/4.html
Blackbeard and crew are half as tall again as the marines.
The top of the Marines hat comes up to the middle of Blackbeard's chest.
The manga can have "mini-soldiers", it's Oda after all..
But seriously, they were always tall like that.
Horrible, horrible episode. For all the awesome shit that was going down in this one it was handled totally anticlimatic and boring. I almost fell asleep. And Teech? That much for the Funimation subbers having the slightest idea of what they are doing actually. Shitty anime is shit! :getlost:
After seeing the preview I'm hoping we actually get abit of the Ivankov/Said-chan fight. Seeing as it wasn't in the manga (just the after effects) it would make some awesome filler
shiryuu was great, hannyabal and buggy + galdino made me laugh as usual. however the pacing seemed too slow .. in the end nothing really happened … -__- ma~ hopefully next weeks episode will be better.
btw .. the star of this episode was obviously this guy ..

Oh wow, I completely missed that.
And Teech? That much for the Funimation subbers having the slightest idea of what they are doing actually.
FUNi knows perfectly well what they're doing. "Teech", like every other retarded 4Kids-name to have appeared in their subs, is only there because Toei is a bunch of meddling retards.
I think this episode was pretty boring for most of it, Buggy and Mr. 3's convo felt out of place, Ace's part was a little bit too long, and Blackbeard's arrival was pathetic.
However, this episode wasn't total crap. I liked:
The manga can have "mini-soldiers", it's Oda after all.
I can't wait until we get to the ''Giant Shichibukai'' and see what happens then.

The result is the same, the romanizations in the subs have to be taken with a grain of salt.
an okay chapter i have to say..but BB appearance was rly..not cool at all.feeled weird and laaaaaaaame!
hannyabal`s resume who is where with the pics of each one was nice.
shiryuu also had a nice ending scene i thought…a good introduction of him.
OH man.. there was soo much happening this ep, but like others have said it just felt like it dragged on, boring boring boring.
I did enjoy the parts with Hannyable, and Shiryuu WAS AMAZING. FUCK.. the animators must REALLY LOVE HIM to give him the BEST animation in the entire episode.
BB's entrance was just CRAP. I LOVE the BB pirates, and they were animated like SHIT, especially BB himself, man..they just did him NO justice ;_;
The part where Mr.3 and Buggy were standing there looking like they were breathing heavily was awkward since they were talking..it just looked retarded DX!! WHAT THE HELL TOEI?????
I loved the part where Luffy and co were attacking, that part was animated decently.
Over all, SUPER dissapointed in the shit animation for this epic ep minus Hannyable and Shiryuu. They really got the BEST animation thank GOD xD I love love LOVE Shiryuu's voice, and Onigumo's voice is UNF TOO XDDD
Next episode looks soooooo much better, got my fingers crossed it will have MUCH better animated scenes with BB's crew.
The animation was half and half in my opinion, half of the episode was excellent while the other half was just plain terrible.
This! The first half is easily the worst One Piece animation since that godawful episode in Shabondy. I really though I'm watching some fan made gif there, not an 80000€ animation. That aside other half of the episode was good. In content as well as in animation. But the bad aftertaste doesn't go away.
I thought this was a good episode. Sure nothing big happened(besides Blackbeard showing up and Shiryuu being released) but you can't really expect that for every episode, at least I can't. I didn't even think the animation was bad.
The only part I didn't like was the Buggy and Mr. 3 part for once.

Eh, actually that part was them thinking. Weird, I know but it was exactly like that in the manga so…

In the Funi subtitles Mr 3 begun his thought with "Yeah", so it felt like he responded to Buggy's thought which doesn't make any sense at all…
Or it was just in the Funi subs and he didn't say "Yeah" in the original version.
This amazing arc is kinda fucked up in the anime.

God, people do like to exaggerate.
Buggy and Galdino are cool. They can talk from their hearts and all they need to do is to open their mouth. They don't even move lips, not talking about tongue.

Yeah, they don't need tongues. Galdino just didn't bite his tongue off because he wouldn't look so damn sexy without it.
God, people do like to exaggerate.
Or they just might think that it really is that way. If you like it fine. I personally agree that the anime totally fucked up a great arc so far.
But Impel Down isn't a great arc.

You do know that "quality" is subjective, don't you? So in other words, there is no "good" or "bad" taste.

Do think you have to go through special training to talk through your heart? I'd like to do it.

Every arc with Crocodile is a great arc.

They really do.
I've learned after watching this forum for a little over a year that most of the vets here are extremely picky.
Yes, the pacing is slow in this Arc, and it's certainly not one of the best in terms of the anime, but I've thoroughly enjoyed most of the episodes. This one being one of them.
I would say that Impel Down is an arc that has a bit more style over substance. For being built up as a prison full of the world's absolute worst criminals, it was pretty underwhelming in retrospect. Incompetent staff, numerous contrivances, and some pacing problems in that it felt like, at least to me, that Oda had a little bit more planned out for it but in the end had to either cut or streamline some elements to get everyone out of there and on to the next plot point.
The next arc isn't without its issues either, but it seems that putting big names into the picture is enough for most people to forgive Oda for them.
They really do.

I gotta agree with you. 438 and 444 have been the only episodes I've been disappointed in during this arc which is pretty good in my book.

you even highlighted it to really help me. That's generous man.
But i'm sure you don't think the same about people who watch big brother the whole day (reality tv shit) or films with bad acting.
Impel down is great.
Good it is, great it isn't.
Sure, there were a lot of pros to it - especially being the part of the experiment which started after Sabaody. The fast pacing, interesting setting, re-using and development of old characters, and sheer useless effort of this act to overall rescue of Ace are just some of these. However, due to fast pacing, some details were left unfinished, some of old characters resulted only in fanservice and some new were under developed.
Of course, all this doesn't make Impel Down bad, but it takes some of it greatness away.
It's a fact that some have horrible taste…
Well excuse me for loving Skypiea.
@Vegard:
You do know that "quality" is subjective, don't you? So in other words, there is no "good" or "bad" taste.
Not really. There are objective esthetic criteria which actually can define quality. Although it's up to the taste how these criteria are applied - which actually proves a person's taste.
At least, in my view.
Impel Down is an awesome arc. One of my favorites really. It starts off fun with Oda's quirks and then it gives me that great feeling to overcome the impossible with chaos. It didn't need to go any more that as there was a mian goal to focus on.
But in the anime… I dunno. I just fails to capture that feeling. The episodes have been going downhill since Freezing hell. Before that, I had a blast... minus a few hiccups and scenes that could have been done better. Somethings work out better in comic form I guess :P
