Chapter 574 "The Death of Portgas D. Ace" Discussion

best chapter ever. <333 :D

@Kairouseki:
I… don't understand :wassat: .
Oh, come on. I know it was a bad joke and all but it's not hard.
Incoming fighter, 3:00.

@Thousand:
What you fail to consider is the difference one chapter could make and the finality the chapter provided.
From the very beginning, the chapter was titled "The Death of Portgas D. Ace" intentionally done by Oda so we'd have no lingering doubt on his fate and to set us automatically to grieving mode. Throughout the chapter, Oda clearly stated that Ace was going to die to the point that even Ace himself said so. Not to mention the talk of having no more regrets, the speech on passing on his will, the symbolism on how everything went full circle ad how Ace accepted who he was and that he was loved and the most damning of all, the vivre card. A fantastic literally device probably planned from the beginning that there would be no ambiguity or doubt about his death. The greatest evidence however is the fact that if Oda HAD planned to bring him back, he wouldn't have made such a heart-breaking chapter like that and gone to such lengths to express his death. it would be unnecessarily writing yourself into a corner.
Just face it, he's dead. It's a real shame since his character could have gone so many ways but that's what makes it more tragic and with such great impact.
And this is from a former Ace Will Live supporter.
Get over it.
You're right. If Ace was to survive this, why have Sakazuki deal him a fatal blow at all? Oda could have had Ace and Luffy escape without that attack. But since Ace was going to die, that's why Sakazuki gave him the fatal blow and the other evidence in this past chapter.

Ace's death so far to me seems well done and I'm glad he's kicking the bucket! I haven't been on AP in some time and haven't read much of the thread but I hope most people feel the same way. Luffy's character development will be interesting to see in the upcoming arc.
-
But this thime his brother, who he was trying to save with all his might died and the first timer ever Luffy hadn't accomplished his goal of this arc and lost someone important
And don't forget that his dear friend Bon-chan died(at least for characters) with his final words being to save his brother. And not only Ace died-he got killed right after certainly being saved.
-
oda really pulling luffys face into the shit…first loosing his crew, than give him poison-pain..than let bon-chan on ID and now killing ace...
chees-us luffy rly has so far hard times!!! -
I still say it was Ace own fault… like it was against BB. He was to hot headed once again and went against an opponent even if the others told him not to
-
^^ well, luffy does this all the time
-
-
But he most of the time he beats the opponent xD but he knows when he have to escape as well
-
well, ace should be older and wiser…
the SH at least thought so at their first meeting with ace..how wrong they were hehe -
-
Shouldn't Akainu be renamed in honor of Ace into…
Hiken no Akainu
xD

Yeah, I thought Ace was going to live but I don't mind that Oda decided to have him die. There's certainly some advantages with his death. Luffy will learn from his experiences the last 9 days (you do learn more from defeat than victory); as the younger brother of the late son of the Pirate King, Luffy can be seen as Roger's true heir now; the Whitebeard Pirate Alliance will surely back up Luffy in the future 100% as opposed to siding with Ace or being split between the 2 (like maybe Jinbei would have). Luffy's already friends with Shanks and now he's uniting all these previously separated groups under 1 banner.
@Sâuza:Yep, it'd be the same if Akainu insults Shanks.
That's what happened in chapter 1 with the mountain bandits and it ended up costing Shanks his left arm. Surely Luffy would have learned from that.

it was said that luffys true strenght is to gather all kind of differnent people around him…
was also foreshadowed while he fighted with arlong..there he said that he is nothing without his nakama.
he has the power to bound the world togeather once again :) -
Yeah, Akainu is the true Firefist . Ace was an impostor.
-
maybe he will be revived by revolutionaries
oda might change his mind
however some will die for sure for the new era -
If Luffy is still awake - which I highly doubt - I would very much like to see one of the Strawhats make it to Luffy's side at this time….even though I realize the complications and difficulties with this idea, and I'm not saying I think it'll happen either, but I think that's pretty much the ONLY thing that could help Luffy a tiny little bit....!
-
I won't lie, i am afraid that Oda could pull something terrible like that. But that would put him on Kubo's level of trolliness, i'm trying to give the man some credit.
I feel this way too. There's another section of people who don't want Ace to live, but rather fear it. The thing is, in shonen nothing is really over, and while there are times to let some ideas go there are also times when going "impossible" is just silly.
The problems here are we actually might have the elements for a revival, possibly, maybe.
-First, consider Ace hasn't been dead long. Sadly there might be some truth to People call me E's "tiny vivrecard" idea, as Oda could pull this. The problem with Ace being dead, for the people who like him dead, is that there's a huge base of people who want him alive just cause they like the character. Sad but true.
-Squado, a regretful ally of Whitebeard who earlier tried to give his life for WB. Sadly, the fate that he hates Roger makes him a great candidate to give his life and provide some poetic twist at the same time. However, currently there is no logical way for Squado to do this.
-Iva, the person I referred to as a "super doctor," though in hindsight was Iva ever called a doctor or just a miracle worker? Either way, she can do a lot, though healing burnt organs is a tall task.
-The nature of logia fruit. This one is a stretch, but considering we have Crocodile on their team a twist on these fruits could arrive.
-The supernovas. The most theoretical angle of all since we don't even know if they'll show up, however they bring with them a large amount of plot devices that could work with the previous two in who knows how many ways. Before the war they were an X factor, and now they are an X factor in a different way.
So yeah, I still feel that Ace's death was "unnecessary," but now that we're here admittedly this could change the series for the better. However, to call Ace dead just because he's….dead still isn't as concrete as you'd think it'd be. Again, the next few chapters will be very interesting.

Luffy needs to be rescued at this point. I don't see any way for him to be able to move. He'll be out of action for awhile after this. Of course, I'm still hoping for some kind of maddened rampage, but i doubt that will happen.

This is Shonen Jump, ever heard of that.
Besides Luffy should try and do something, he got Ace killed for being weak. -
also why the lava punch makes him bleed, his wounds would be seared with lava anyway
-
This is Shonen Jump, ever heard of that.
Besides Luffy should try and do something, he got Ace killed for being weak.Yeah, Luffy was totally the one who stopped first and attacked Akainu instead of trying to run thus causing Ace's death.

Fire-fist Ace got
firemagma-fisted…:ninja: -

Saving the weakling Luffy is what got Ace killed.
-
Weakling Luffy saved Ace twice.
-
Ace died because Akainu's a fucking badass.
-
With Ace dead there are few things removed from the future…. such as Ace and Luffy ending to have to fight for the Pirate King title... could they really fight each other like that ?
-
@Lee:
Weakling Luffy + Whitebeard pirates, some Shichibukai traitors, some queers, and some convicts saved Ace twice.
Yeah I know, then Luffy just F's up and gets Ace killed.
-
Fire-fist Ace got
firemagma-fisted…:ninja::blink: why so much erotic fantasy in that sentence?
AP digs deep to come up with the darkest side of me:ninja:
-
Yeah I know, then Luffy just F's up and gets Ace killed.
How exactly do you think Luffy got Ace killed? Just wondering. Since I'm pretty sure if you turn around to attack the beastly admiral chasing you instead of running away, it's your fault.
-
@$abZ:
Ace died because Akainu's a fucking badass.
That's it ! It's not like Ace is dumb or Luffy is a weakling or anyting like that, it's Akainu who knew Ace's sensitive point when he saw his reaction, and what has he done ? He kept pressing and pressing till Ace cracked, atacked and was burnt, Ace realises that he couldn't match him and Akainu knew that.
So to prevent any risk of seeing Ace fleeing he attacked Luffy. Did he do it so Ace'll try protect him and take the attack ? seems unlikely, but in all cases he could've eliminated one of the two. So he did his job.paragraph seems fanboyed tough:ninja:
-
Ace's sensitive point was his chest apparently.
-
Luffy wasn't the one that got called out and then turned around and talked shit then charged ahead and got his arm magma fisted rather than running away…
Did you know that the force of that magma fist made the vivre card fall that Ace said, "HoLD ONTO IT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!" and then Luffy followed the advice that Ace gave him, then Ace died because of all this crap that points back to Ace in the first place...
So, again, how on earth is it Luffy's fault?
-

Ace had to become a shield to save Luffy from Red Dog. Because of Luffy's weakness, Ace is at the gates of hell.
-
You do know that the only reason Luffy stopped in the first place was because Ace did, right?
-
Ace had to become a shield to save Luffy from Red Dog. Because of Luffy's weakness, Ace is at the gates of hell.
Again, it all dates back to Ace's own doing… If he didn't do all that he did, Luffy wouldn't have had to follow the stuff Ace told him in the past...
So, please prove your point.
-
Guys…guys....guys....
Don't sweat the Technique.
-
Ace had to become a shield to save Luffy from Red Dog. Because of Luffy's weakness, Ace is at the gates of hell.
And how is that Luffy's fault?
If Ace hadn't been stupid enough to stop because of Akainu's goading, they would've still been running for the ship. Luffy stopped because Ace did. Ace is at fault for not listening to anyone who told him to ignore the man.
-
Don't feed the troll

He actually lost the card before that:
-
Yeah I was wondering a little while ago when he lost the vivre card. It took me a while to find out when he lost it.
-
@Corson:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4026/4358051592_939b9c580a_b.jpgWow… I didn't notice that at all...
Wow... That is even more irony towards Ace's death. That's just funny!!
I can't believe Oda did it that way, it's like hilarious ...

shows us just once more what a foreshadowing genius oda is lol :)

-
-
Come to think of what will happen now. I thought of all possibilities there are (the level of possibility):
-
Time skip (high)
-
Luffy does somekinda Uber-Haki while he is in massive-genocide-gear and kicks some asses (low)
-
Story changes to the other Strawhats (medium)
-
Whitebeard goes nuts on WG and Luffy is taken to the ship along with aces corpse and they get the hell outta holy land (medium/high)
-
Someone unknown enters the battlefield, with some uber-power, revives ace or shows a possibility to save him (very low)
-
Luffy falls unconcious and is taken away by WB pirates and wakes up on some island (medium)
-
the real Kuma appears, and takes aces injuries away (heals), puts it into a huge balloon-thingy, and throws it at someone or somewhere (maybe WB) like he did with luffy on thriller park (medium)
I actually hope that the last theory will come true, cause it seems to be sneaky way for oda to kill a character and bring him back in the next instant.:ninja:
