Don't want to overdo it but could someone add my disclaimer (what I posted before the trans) to the first post as well? Just wanna make sure it's clear from the get go.
This chapter rocked me a lot harder than I thought it would.

I'm really praying that Akainu gets killed by Vista and Marco. He needs to die after he killed both Jimbei and Ace . Two characters I really liked now that this act is set in motion this is probably the last showing we will see of the Whitebeard pirates they are all either gonna die or they are gonna permanently destroy the world government . Blackbeard was right what he did was going to shake up the world.
what the fuck….......
I said it in the spoiler thread and I'll say it again.
Congratulations to those who have always thought that Ace would die during this arc. I always thought that Ace was going to survive (but at least Luffy rescued him from the execution platform) this war. Again, congratulations.
That also makes 4 (known) dead D.s and 4 (known) alive D.s. And the Gol/Portgas families are dead.
I freaking cried. Now I'm gonna be depressed and shit for at least a month.
I can't wait for next week.
I smell that the next chapter will be finally a full version flashback of Ace's past. With it, we'll see Dandan.
Ace's death totally changes the entire manga up to this point IMO. One of the things people rag on One Piece about is how Oda doesn't kill any characters. It's very, very clear to me that the reason guys like Pell survived is to set up the shock value of this moment. Oda truly is a master storyteller.

I don't think Jimbei is dead YET. And Akainu looks too strong for anyone in the battle right now. Garp probably would have died himself if Sengoku didn't hold him back.
cue Emo Ace in 3…2...1...
I know… And I feel more sorry for Ace than wanting to laugh at him being emo. The answer he sought was right in front of him, with his adopted families, and it took death for him to realize that.
Normal Luffy is like a happy pill. A high happy pill, but an effective one. If a couple of years living with that can't cure insecurities, nothing could.

I reaaallllyyyy hope this doesn't happen but I have a feeling it will.
Any day now and we will be bombarded with Ace Tributes! (Cue Sad Music)

Well, I think the idea of these last couple of chapters was to allow Ace to die with dignity. If they had killed him several chapters back, then we would definitely have the right to ridicule his bitchiness.
Unbelievable. I havent felt this way in a while. At least when I see a fictional character die. This is a rescue mission arc. SJ titles are notorious for these things, and here we are slapped with the biggest rescue arc we've seen from many series, and BAM! It comes out as a failed mission. Oda has caught our hearts with this one. His delicate preparation has further proved why he is among the best of the best manga-ka period.
I salute you Oda-sensei
So… Arlong PArk is in black this week?
Goodbye Ace, it's nice knowing you…......
Now Ace is dead, if Oda can make one death, then next chapters we will see even more deaths, Jinbei, WB, Marco, Joz,… :ninja:
Ace's career:
Draw vs. Jimbei
Draw vs. Smoker
Loss vs. Blackbeard
Loss vs. Whitebeard
Loss vs. Akainu

Completely agree. At least he realized this in the end, though.
Ace's career:

Loss vs. Blackbeard
Loss vs. Whitebeard

Brutal, man. Just brutal. But honest.
I've read the summary and haven't gone over it in the finest detail, I'll admit… but something strikes me as off about this. I trust and respect Oda, and that's why I say this
Ace is a huge figure. I'm not saying he's not going to die, but this death makes me skeptical. He's fairly key to the story/history/world, he's loved by the fans, and he's strong even for a Logia. the fact that he's one-shotted (even after prison for who knows how long; I mean, Buggy and Mr 3 could even fight after Impel Down). He got out of his cuffs and kicked as much ass as anyone else there, and get's suckerpunched to death after raging for 5 seconds?
Ace's death feels pointless. It's not so much a sacrifice as it is like saying characters can't develop without someone they love dying. Ace essentially lays there and dies, and whispers goodbye? I have to call bullshit, because Oda works better than that. whenever someone in the past has died, they had a big impact. BIG. Ace's felt.... kind of bland and flavorless. I mean, at Least Going Merry popped out of nowhere to save the entire crew. the boat had a better death than this!!
here's hoping Ace is holding on within an inch of his life. ideally to let the attackers escape before self-desctructing and burning the island to the ground. it's the best i can think of at this point, but I'm sure Oda could do better than I ever could
Ace's career:
Draw vs. Jimbei
Draw vs. Smoker
Loss vs. Blackbeard
Loss vs. Whitebeard
Loss vs. Akainu
Win vs. Luffy
Win vs. Baroque Works ships
Win vs. Doma
Arc ends with WB holding Ace and water rising past WB's knees as the island sinks.

But Ace died because he can't learn the lesson he should have learned back with his pursuit of BB.
Protecting your brother is noble, but dying because you can't take trash talk is kind of…
The other characters keep on saying how Ace is more cool-headed, smarter, and more polite than Luffy. I just don't see it with the way he is acting lately.
I actually like Ace, but his recent actions are not that bright, and I feel he hasn't fully accomplished his dream. He knows that others accept and love him, but he still can't accept and love himself. This is like salt rubbing into the wound of Luffy's pain and failure during his rescue mission.
Win vs. Doma
And before anybody says who cares about that, he's the guy with the gun monkey, and you do not slag something so awesome like that.
I think Luffy needs some kind of reverie regarding everything that's happened since he was separated from the others.
So the first thing he sees when waking up being them and knowing that they're okay would be something I could see being really special.
I trully want to see this now.

He died protecting his brother not because of the trash talk.

ive got a feeling theres is going to be alot of Ace fanarts in my message box on dA in the next few weeks or so
Ace's death feels pointless
You sure you read this chapter?
Re-read it please…no re-read the whole arc and if your still feeling this way....then start OP over.
Ace is dead. End of Story.
WB: How's my son doing?
Medic: The fisting was worse than we expected! His internal organs are all damaged!
WB: That bastard!
Medic: He's not gonna make it!
Akainu: Hehe I got him good…
Wow
….
He couldn't off Pell, JeanBart, everyone in Skypiea, or random dude shot by Charloss but he killed Ace?
Remember Akainu's words about about Luffy's Haoshoku "that just now, it seemed to manifest outside his conciousness" or something along those lines?
I think that the perfect excuse for Luffy unleashing Haki in a justifiable manner is if his psyche is shattered to pieces, unshackling his subconscious power out of sheer rage. Call it SSJ or whatever, but this actually makes sense.
So basically, I'm trying to discern if that final expression is Luffy berserker raging as his subconscious takes over his broken psyche, allowing for his haki to manifest until they bring him down, or if it's just him finally and definately passing out.
Either way, Luffy's mind, if not his body as well, is down for the count. The only way we'll see Luffy do anything at this point, and I think it would be the right move, is to see an insane Luffy unleash enourmous power, as a show to keep all of us who want to see his potential sated. I think it would be a great choice because he wouldn't be able to use it when he wakes up, so it's not at all like a permanent powerup, just a small display of his future power.
What do you guys think?
Luffy was consistently willing/trying to sacrifice himself to save Ace and in the end it ended up being Ace who sacrificed himself to save Luffy, how very ironic.
Wow
….
He couldn't off Pell, JeanBart, everyone in Skypiea, or random dude shot by Charloss but he killed Ace?
because those guys dying don't mean much.

Judging by the last scene, I think Luffy is basically done for this arc.
Someone else will save him. Maybe that guy from chapter 0 will save him
Wow
….
He couldn't off Pell, JeanBart, everyone in Skypiea, or random dude shot by Charloss but he killed Ace?
Maybe that's why….he always knew Ace would die, not killing the others made us totally unprepared for it....
Wow
….

For better or worse (better imo :D), that's actually the point here. The emotional impact comes from the fact that this was [relatively] unexpected.
EDIT: Damn you chpollastrini! Making my point before I could!
I think if Oda did a character popularity poll now. Akainu would be very low on the chain…
You know I was just thinking. Both Luffy and Zoro had rivals that they fought but could never beat and yet tried to surpass. Now both of these rivals are dead and nether Luffy or Zoro will be able to beat them in a fight.
Ace's funeral song should be: "It seems to me, you lived your life, like a candle in the wind…"
-shot-
I agree with Luffy going batshit with Haki, but I also have a feeling he might just kill for the first time.
With all of that power and rage, something is bound to go horrible.
Remember Akainu's words about about Luffy's Haoshoku "that just now, it seemed to manifest outside his conciousness" or something along those lines?

VERY good point! I completely agree.

Luffy's face in the final panel is nothing more then him LOSING CONSCIOUSNESS from the events that have transpired and all the damage his body has taken throughout Impel Down and Marineford.
omfg oda actually wrote off ace. holy shit.
But Ace died because he can't learn the lesson he should have learned back with his pursuit of BB.

But by the end, he realized his idiocy in regards to acknowledging his reason to live. I agree, though, that turning around to fight Akainu seemed more like a clear rejection of that idea (throwing his friend's efforts away to protect the honor of his leader who just sacrificed his life for him). That's the one piece of the puzzle that peeves me.
He died protecting his brother not because of the trash talk.
If they ran away really fast, maybe he wouldn't have needed to protect his brother.
He couldn't off Pell, JeanBart, everyone in Skypiea, or random dude shot by Charloss but he killed Ace?
Why would he off Jean Bart? He never even got close to dying.
Sorry guys but I can't help myself
Crude edit…

What a chapter. Crazy. RIP Ace.
You know what made this chapter extra sad? The cover story… Luffy loses both Ace and meat ;; that's just cruel.
I know you guys are probably sick of the db references but Luffy looks like he's going into oozaru mode or something. Getting his O face on :x
