Particularly quoting Shakespeare in its original Klingon!
Why do people hate James Cameron's Avaturd?
-
-
You don't get the nuances of Shakespeare any other way, which is a strong point of the film.
-
@robbybedfart:
Wrath of Khan is the better movie.
Can I hug you now?

Just had Avatar (DVD) posted through the door.
If I get time I'll watch it again tonight.
-
So apprently Cameron is a fan of lost:
-
Instead of backing down, Cameron reveled in the environmental themes leading up to the climatic conclusion of "Avatar". "I think there's something amazingly satisfying when the hammerheads come out of the forest and start mowing down all the bad security enforcers. Nature gets to fight back," he said. "It's 'Death Wish' for environmentalists. When did nature ever get to fight back in a movie?"
Bring the gifs people.

-
Ah to be back at simpler times. When your virgin girlfriends go walking out into the lonesome, possessed, evil woods, only to get raped by a tree.
Funny thing is, I had no idea what was going on in that scene when I first seen the E.D series, twas too young to know the tree was giving the chick Vagina splinters.
-
Oooh right off the bat.
I was hoping for a more subtle beginning.
Ents perhaps.
Or Robin Williams as a bat.
-
Wait wait, I take that back.
"SHOW YOUR FACES!"
-

Ents perhaps.
Or Robin Williams as a bat.
…Ents would have been good. Didn't think of that.
But I think the Ferngully/Avatar jokes have been quite overdone by now. That's probably the worst thing Avatar has done. Dredge THAT thing back from the forgotten depths it had sunk into. It was Nostalgia critic fodder and nothing else, and best left that way.
I mean really, just let Ferngully lie as the forgotten piece of animated trash that it was. OH well, at least that never got a sequal.
....
oh dear lord.
-
finally also watched this movie…and what should i say
it real great in his special effects and it is sure worth to watch it.
story was most of the time predictable but for a 2 and a half hour ride with decent effects it was sure on the top of possible so far.. -
Personally, i think it was good but overrated. Pandora was really big and great taste and very beautiful. No doubt about that.
Cameron should have worked more on the plot instead of the visual effects. I am not ready to rewatch or watch a sequel if he cannot give more depth to the movie.
IMO, Terminator 1 and 2 were much better and interesting and less black and white.
I heard people got depressed after watching this movie for not living in Pandora. It is only a movie for god sake none of this real. There are better things in life.
Boy, i heard Lucas wants to make all the star wars trilogy in 3d.
Can you f***ing believe it ?Stop screwing the original trilogy of Star Wars with stupid special effects.

But you see, it's Robin Williams as an insane bat. I think it's perhaps the role he was born to play.
RW as IB.
believe it! shimmers

I liked Ferngully…

There is truth in this statement. He actually had no script, as far as I know. And… it had Tim Curry. Instant bonus for that, as always.
@Kairouseki:
I liked Ferngully… Haven't seen it in forever though.
Here's the 15 minute version.

avatar, the glorified cartoon

It is impossible to secure a ticket for this, even months after it came out.
Of course who was the brilliant bastard who walked up to an IMAX theatre on Valentine's Day a few minutes before showtime and demanded middle row seats.
-
I think this has to be said..
!

I think this has to be said..
HAHAHA that was fucking brilliant

Hey, movie stuido guys. When you inevitably make the sequal, could you put aside a small portion of your budget. Just a small, tiny portion, maybe 20 or 30 mill, and do a cg version of this show?
I mean, its got soldiers, mech suits and 10 foot tall blue people… mind transferals, clone bodies and romance. Great characterization, action, monster beast things, even some genocide and a version of Hitler you can go up against!
The show was quite a bit better than your movie despite sharing a lot of elements, it really deserves more attention than your giant blockbuster did. So if you could, please? Make an exo-squad season?
P.S. please bring back the actual creators and writers involved on the show and stay out of their way.

Why? You think they would actually make a good movie? They took a crap all over Transformers and GI Joe already. They only make stuff worse. You should know that by now.

Reread the last, all important line.

Also, I asked for a cg version of the show. not a movie.
Point remains. It had many of the elements Avatar did, and did almost all of them better.
How was it NOT brought up as a joke months ago? I guess everyone just latched onto the Ferngully and Dances with Wolves references.

Yea I read that part but I ignored it because that would never happen. No studio would spend 20-30 million dollars and let some people who worked on a kids show have their way. And a cg version would end up being straight to dvd in this case.
-
For a kid's show, it was pretty fucking awesome. Hell, I'll even go as far as to say it's
one of the greatest TV shows that no one remembers.I watch this and can only conclude that no S&P executives knew this show existed. It had balls. This was a World War II allegory, and they didn't dumb it down. Genocide took place, and on screen. And it wasn't aliens or some other fantasy race being exterminated, it was human beings. The antagonist, Phaeton, well, to call him Hitler would not be invoking Godwin's Law. It's finally started coming to DVD, and I can't wait for it to finish.
-
This was dropped off in the Naruto thread by someone else. It really needs to be in here too.

Its pretty hilarious, and yet spot on critiquing at the same time. It's pretty comprehensive, so if you HAVEN'T seen the movie yet, uhm… spoilers.
-
Wow, it's long but so far it is pretty funny. Especially House being the doctor .
-
it seems the movie was close to being better, but for whatever reason, they decided to cut the story elements:

Bulletpoints for those that don't want to read the whole thing.
-
Earth and its environmental problems are explored
-
We see Josh Sully's Avatar being born
-
It's revealed the Avatar program exists to train Na'vi to be an indigenous workforce for the Corporation, since it's so expensive to send human workers
-
There are more humans, including a bioethics officer on the take, a video journalist, a head of the Avatar program and a second military dickwad
-
There is an Avatar controller who is burnt out because his Avatar died with him in it. He committed Avatar suicide because he had fallen in love with a Na'vi girl who had been killed by the military
-
The Avatars have a Na'vi guide named N'Deh, who is sleeping with Grace
-
Grace survives the soul transfer
-
Josh Sully gains the Na'vi trust by being a member of the community. He also excels in a major hunt
-
Josh Sully shows his leadership not by taming a dragon but by leading a raid on Hell's Gate to rescue prisoners
-
Josh Sully isn't the only Na'vi to ride a big dragon
-
Pandora is a living entity and it sees the humans as a virus; it has been mobilizing the plants and animals to attack all along because it wanted to force the humans out
-
There is no unobtainium beneath Hometree. The military just wants to wipe out the local Na'vi to send a message to all the tribes that they must be obeyed.
-
Some of the humans and the Avatar controllers rise up in the final big battle
-
Josh Sully tells the Earth that Pandora will give any humans that return a disease that will wipe out humanity
All in all, it sounds like a WAY better movie with this material. It would have been 5 hours long so obviously streamlining was needed, but…
-
-
Yeah, it's kind of hard to justify keeping that stuff with it being so long. Maybe that could include it on the DVD release.
-
//- Josh Sully tells the Earth that Pandora will give any humans that return a disease that will wipe out humanity//
O_o
-
Looks like they were gonna explain the floating mountains, too. I also heard that draft told us why the atmosphere was deadly to humans.
Maybe we'll see some of these things, like Earth's environmental problems and the birth of Jake's Avatar in the prequel novel that Cameron is planning to release at the end of the year. I also wouldn't be surprised if the "second military dickwad" is used as the villain for the sequel.
-
Ha, just read that really long Avatar recreation . I think my favorite parts were the James Cameron interruptions and Embodiment of Capitalism.

SO, ANYWAY, JUGHEAD IS BEING SHOWN AROUND BY THAT HOT CHICK WHO PLAYED A TOUGH L.A. COP IN "LOST", AND LIKED THAT CHARACTER SO MUCH THAT IT'S PRETTY MUCH WHO SHE IS HERE, TOO. EXCEPT WITHOUT THE "CHARACTER" PART.
-
//- Josh Sully tells the Earth that Pandora will give any humans that return a disease that will wipe out humanity//
O_o
It says in the actual article that he was bluffing. I though that sounded weird as well.
-
i wish humanity would give pandora a disease that would make the planet explode, so there wouldnt be any sequels
-
Well, while the original plans sound like they would definitely improve the film, there are still a few problems that remain. Namely…
-"Man! Pandora is so much cooler than boring old Earth with its lack of six-legged not-horses, flying not-dragons, and glowing plants!"
and
-"We're the military, and we love blowing shit up and killing people, because we're the military!"
-
i wish humanity would give pandora a disease that would make the planet explode, so there wouldnt be any sequels
I do not want a sequel either.
This movie cannot even compare to Terminator 1 and 2.

I think I have that exact script on my computer. I downloaded it the day after seeing the movie but I couldn't tell if it's a legit, real original scrip by Cameron or not.
-

The spec script HAS been online for over a decade, so its quite likely its the real deal.
Spec scripts get online all the time in fact, if you know to look for them. Last Action Hero was pretty different in its original version…
I understand cutting plot threads for time, and budget. I totally get that. But... why so many good, substantial ones that give much needed explanation, character, tension and depth? Why leave just the soulless part?
-
Probably one of Cameron's best movie or his best movie.
Avatar cannot even compare to that.
-
@robbybedfart:

It felt real but this is Internet and anybody can write a script and slap Cameron's name on it so I thought it was just healthy to approach it with a little sceptism.
Real or not it's a rather cool script anyway, probably most elaborated movie script I have ever read. It can be enjoyed as a stand alone work. If anybody is interested I uploaded it: http://koti.mbnet.fi/yoska/avatar.pdf
I agree with cuts and changes tho. Having very little exposition but still being very easy to follow is exactly what I liked about this movie.
I'm a big sci-fi book geek but accessibility isn't usually the strong suit of the genre. Although sci-fi movies, since they are a world apart from sci-fi novels, generally do a better job at being accessable.
