I need to convince my parents that I should get all 38 volumes of OP at www.sasugabooks.com (only a couple at a time of course). How can I do it? Should I find a way to learn and read and speak Japanese so I can get them. Or should I beg and plead?
Getting raw tankos

Since you live in the States, maybe you want to use Kinokuniya instead of Sasuga. Cheaper shipping that way.
And… show Stephen's translation and tell them you gonna study Japanese with it? :x

Two things.
1. Can I get a link to Kinokuniya?
2. How does Stephen's translations teach Japanese. Especially if the profanity has been removed. One thing I want to do (besides import video games and read OP) is to cuss people out in Japanese. I know I'm weird but I won't get in trouble.

I didn't understand a word of that. How am I supposed to order from a place I can't even understand. -

(Damn 20 characters minimum...!)I did what you said, I still don't see how I could order the tankos. I still haven't solved my learning Japanese dillemma.
God I suck.

Uhm…
1. Go here and read: http://www.kinokuniya.com/ny/ord_eng.html
2. After you read it, you'll know that you can order either through phone, fax, or Email.
Phone: (212) 765-7766
FAX: (212) 541-9335
I don't see link to email, so oh well.
3. Make a call and say you want to buy One Piece by Eiichiro Oda? Give them your address, money, etc, etc… -
Its pretty simple, you probably just didn't see it…
On the navigation bar of the page on the left hand side of the page there is a button labled ordering and shipping (in english none the less!) when you click it, it brings up the page in English. (at least thats what I assume it brings up, I cant read japanese any better than you can really :P)
If you browse around the site abit (all the pages are in both english and japanese once you find the button for the english version) there is an order form there and im sure what you are looking for.
On the subject of learning Japanese, use tankos/various trans as a study aide, and take a few introductory courses at a local college/university. If the courses are good, take more, if not find somewhere else, ask the professors of the aforementioned courses what other good ways to learn Japanese are. Honestly it cant hurt right?

-
talk with your parents and say u really want them and u could read them with transscprits. it might work. it worked for me anyway
-
why don't you buy them yourself instead of having your parents buy it for you? save your allowance, find a job, rob a bank, etc…

Can't get a job because I'm too young, and I don't have a credit card or paypal to buy the books.
If you're wondering I'm only 15.
-
Finally convinced my parents to get to books for me.
Then I'm most likely get a computor program that will teach Japanese. Like Rosetta.

i was buying my own manga when i was 15… you can go mow someone's lawn, babysit, or even work out a deal with your parents where you do some work for them. don't put limitations on yourself just cause you're young.

The problem is a means of making payments.
You might see if you can get a checking account; some banks offer them with no fees; the only issue might still be age. There are also pre-paid debit cards one can purchase for online shopping, but they tend to come with abominable fees

Sorry, I just had to use that smiley even if I'm linking from other forum lol.
Very much I agree with you, I think a 15 year old still needs parents' permission to do anything unless s/he has local Japanese bookstore near by… If I were his dad, I'd say no for Paypal :P I don't even have my own Paypal account +_+ I agree on earning his own money though.

One thing I want to do (besides import video games and read OP) is to cuss people out in Japanese.
That's a really REALLY bad reason to learn Japanese. Even if you do learn the cusswords, you won't know how to use them properly. Example, joder if I remember right is the F word in Spanish, however, you have to know the different forms of the verb and how to use it properly. You also have to know exactly how they use it in the language. Do they only use it literally as in having sex, or do they use it in the fuck you way? Is the Japanese shit word on the same level of offensiveness as shit, or is it more like crap?
Cussing in a foreign language without having a very good foundation in the language is not going to go over well, and people are going to think you're pretty lame for cussing them out in Japanese all the time.
To the person who said http://www.kinokuniya.com/ny/order.html is cheaper because it's US based, Sasuga books is US based as well.
-
What's all this about no work at 15 ? You can get a job as a burger griller easy at fifteen. =P Pretty stinkin' lucky you got your parents to buy 'em all, my father wouldnt've done such a thing for me.
But, yeah, learning Japanese to learn the swear words is a pretty stupid idea IMO (I've been studying for a few years now and hell, even I don't know that many). Certainly isn't gonna get you far in Japan if you start screaming KUSOOOO everywhere. Hell, it won't get you far here either =D
-
Don't get a job at a fast food place. Get one mowing. You'll get about $20 per lawn and it'll take 2 hours per lawn tops. That's way better than minimum wage. After a few weeks have your mom or dad use their credit card to order you some volumes, and then give them the ammount they paid.
Sasuga requires a minimum $20 order which is 4 or so volumes.
-
It's not gonna kill you to work in fast food. I never have (I'm a baker. I knead to make dough, oh god I kill me) but that's typically what a first job ends up being anyway.
-

Don't they charge the shipping fee from Japan? Oh, guess not. Sorry ^^; I always thought Sasuga ships from Japan. (I've never used any of those services.)
What's all this about no work at 15?
It's not a job but more of payment method? Or that's what I thought.
And I don't know for BatDan, but some parents are against Manga, period. shrugs
Me… My parents were against it when I was little so I always bought novels and read my friends' Manga then. Now I'm away from them, they want to do something for me and they send me Manga and Japanese TV DVDs xD!
-
ALRIGHT, I'm sorry for being an ass and saying dumb things, if you want I'll leave the forums and never come back.
-
Oh don't worry over such a … small thing. Stay.
-
I could wait next year and learn to drive and get a real job at a place like Gamestop, Best Buy or even Blockbuster.
I WON'T work in fast food after watching Supersize Me 5 times.
The world would be a better place if my school offered Japanese as a course instead of Hebrew.
-

I figured that was the case, yeah. I dunno though, I started working when I was 15 and I didn't mind it too much… paychecks are wonderful things (So are debit cards but that's another story entirely)
-
Man wtf are you talking about you can't get a job? You are fifteen, of course you can get a job.
-
Try asking your parents. Maybe they have friends that own businesses that need employees.
Actually, I shouldn't be saying anything, since I hardly work also. The way I usually get money is by not eating lunch. That way, I get 25 bucks a week. :D
And then my Mom thinks I'm going to gain more weight, since I'm usually stuffing myself at home after school.
-
My paid job when I was little: massage parents. 1 dollar per 5 minute.
My unpaid job when I was in jr high school: intern at kindergarden.
My paid job when I was in high school, violating school rule: waiter at cafe in a hospital.
My paid job when I was in high school, without violating rule: post office.
My paid job when I was in college: babysit cousin's kids. drive neighbor's kids from school. It sucks when school doesn't allow you to have a part time job. :/ Now I'm off topic… ... I want to watch Supersize Me but I love french fries from McD so I dont' want to watch lol. ... ... Oh well, I can't go back on topic.
Please somebody else do. points the nest poster
-
I'll just spoil it by saying that they discovered the effects of eating mcdonalds were the same as binge-drinking. :p
-
Okay, forget the cussing people out part. I'm an idiot so I say stupid things. But no matter how long it takes. I will learn Japanese and read One Piece in it's true form. None of that poorly translated online Stoptazmo stuff or Viz's Americanized crap. Any problem with that . . . AP users.
-
lol!! how embarrasing… i will remember this forever!!!
ooshi78
What ? It's a fun job ! It's a hell of a lot better than that crap waitress thing I was doing =D
-

Sasuga books charges a US shipping fee, which is much cheaper than shipping from Japan.
-
Now to learn the language, but seriously. It's better quality then what Viz prints, though smaller by a couple inches around. I also like the dust jacket, which adds a very graphic novel like feel to it. Plus the picture seems to be better. Now my next step is to find a way to learn Japanese and read it.
Note: I'm aware of Stephan's scripts so don't say a thing.
-
Congratulations. I´m planning to do the same thing when I´ve reached the level in spanish I desire to be at.
But I already start building up my collection of the original medium for the time when I approach japanese. I already have one original anime DVD at home with the next two coming up.
I´ll probably buy all the manga´s at once since they aren´t as pricey as the dvd´s. The only sad part is that it appears that I won´t be able to pick up the First Log, since I so much would want to own one or two copies of it. =(

Hey, this 20 character rule surely works by making people post constructive responses.
Sorry igalsfy, couldn´t resist.
-
yesterday i saw a cat.
I own two cats. They are very sick and very old. Had them all my life.

that's sad. let's hope they'll leave longer than the one i saw yesterday. btw, the subway doesn't work in my town today.
see Ivotas? it's easy to post useless stuff without taking care of the 20 char rule. even a whole thread is doable. (does this crazy word exists? doable…)
-
(does this crazy word exists? doable…)
It's crazy but yes it exists. My sister just came by to tell me to turn on my cell cuz my mother wants to call me so I can congratulate my dad with his birthday.
-

that's cool. what will you tell him? "good work dad, you achieved one more year!"
do you know that it's not my dad's birthday at all?
do not buy him a rabbit, we offered it to a friend recently, it's the worst gift ever.
-
Probably like this:
me: so eh, happy birthday
dad: thanks
(silence)
dad: so how's it going
me: good..
(more silence)
dad: I'll put mom back on
me: ok yeah -
Eh, seriously but i do not see the point of this thread.
-

Please don't make extra work for us on purpose. Whole thread is not doable. That's why us mods exist. If you keep doing that on purpose, I'll see it as troll.
/me just woke up and not in a good mood (yet). If anybody learned Japanese this way in the past (I'm sure some of the people do; I learned my German this way… half way), share your experience. Aka get your asses back on topic. If you got nothing to say, please leave the thread alone.
By the way, I'll merge this thread with old one later. Gotta get to work first.
-
You can merge threads? That's a very cool feature. I was thinking Rosetta Stone but then went to the website and found out it cost $195 for the first volume of CDs. I'm not made of cash, so any alternate ways of learning Japanese, reading, writing and speaking.
-
Speaking of Sasuga, I just got their 1-20 One Piece set deal, which overall cost about as much as it would to buy them all at a bookstore (as opposed to mail-ordering which is generally 1-2 dollars more expensive per book). Now I only need about 7-8 more to have a complete set again.
-
Are they all new? I'm still waiting to find a good deal on Bleach ~.~ Funny they put "Kubo Tite" as "Kubo Obihito."
They have Bleach 1-10 set for 55 bucks… being tempted
-
Yeah they are all nice and new.
