So, the volumes are still gonna be edited?
Welp, that's it then. I'm not buying. Maybe I should stop buying jump aswell.
Why are you promoting it in your sig then?
What a stupid question. Because I haven't edited it yet. Maybe I should make it an anti-viz one.
What a stupid question. Because I haven't edited it yet. Maybe I should make it an anti-viz one.
So a better question would be –- why haven't you edited it yet? I mean that's how it's looked for a couple of weeks and the whole time you've been against buying the books.
And again, I still think you're overreacting. I've been reading the VIZ version for a while and the dialogue feels very natural despite the edits. I even bought the newest Shonen Jump and despite using shove off instead of eat shit the scene was still handled fine. And it's not like we have the Greek version where every name is changed.
@Gia:
Gahhh…... Everybody here just needs to stop and just import the japanese volumes. Trust me I used to have vol. 1-6 of the english volumes and i couldnt take it. So now after 3 years saving and collecting, i have all the japanese vols. and i can tell you right now that, even if you cant understand these volumes, youll definitely like them and think it is much more worth importing these than buying shitty, cropped, not properly translated english vols.
Uh, what's "cropped" supposed to mean? And sorry, but I'd rather have a few changed names and some occasional toned down dialogue rather than having 50+ books which I can't read. Viz's translation isn't perfect, but I've seen much worse.

EDIT: But then again, since this is the VIZ discussion, I dont want to be bulshitting about the english vols.
Dude. I own a whole bunch of Japanese volumes, AND I still would own the Viz volumes. I have friends that come over to read my shit. It would not be wise of me to let them watch through volumes in a language they don't understand.
Why do I even have them in Japanese? Well, my original intent was to protest agianst Viz for releasing it so slow(and art references I could easily look up). The first volume I bought was volume 16 (you can imagine how saddened I was, because that was the last volume). They look pretty, and some stories are easy to follow without knowing the language, but I would rather have them in English.
Sorry. Your idea does not flow with me. Maybe it does for you.
Also, seeing as how I and almost everyone here knows every One Piece detail by heart, the Viz edits, at least for me become less noticable at times. My mind just replaces the zolo's for me at times. or maybe im just insane…
I decided to do another comparison between Stephen's translations, and Viz's. I did the entire Mr. 1 fight this time, because I thought they handled the dialogue pretty well.

So apart from some attack names, everything's pretty much the same. Two or three lines of trash talk are rewritten, but I actually like Mr. 1's line about being too messy to be an excavator rather than the generic ''I'll cut you up'' line he had before._

I wish I could bring myself to learn a second language, or maybe 3 more.
That translation comparison is awesome Crossword! I really don't understand why people get that angry! They are perfectly suitable translations, very minor things are changed.
When I was at anime expo in the funimation panel, some nerd girl got up about some anime, dont remember what it was called, but you all were talking about it. Its some mystery story I believe, where some kind of clue is the names of all the characters? Some of you know what im talking about. And in the english dub the names are changed because of some kind of legal issues I believe. At least thats what I remember the funimation guy saying. But the nerd girl kept going on asking "why?" and just not shutting up about it. She kept going, "it makes no sense, blah blah blah". and I was just thinking, good god! Is this how the One Piece guys are? At least our Viz translations don't alter the story line in the slightest. I can imagine some of you get so worked up about these translations that it physicaly stresses you out. Like school yard kids who argue which series is strongest, and hate to be proven that Naruto can be beaten by Goku. One can die very unhappy from stuff like that.

I think that was Detective Conan (or Case Closed, as FUNi calls it). Not that I've actually seen it myself, but I've heard about that whole "name-changes ruining the plot"-thing.
I never had anything against their translations. I do art edits and pointless name changes.
I'll wait and see what news comes out. It's still awhile till Jan.
I was going to go into a small blurb about kid friendliness in VIZ's version of OP and rating systems for Japan and America and how it makes Japanese children seem more "mature" than American children, but that's another topic entirely and it would've been of considerable length.
I appreciate VIZ doing that, though, instead of localization; instead of relating to something you already know, it teaches you something new, unless you knew about it in the first place, that is.
I understand the first two will probably NEVER make it in (and I myself am happy about that, since like someone else stated I think FUNi's taking their ability to swear a little too seriously; I think moderate language is enough, in terms of quality AND quantity), but I have actually seen the third word you mentioned. It was in the first book, during Zoro's flashback after Kuina beats him for the last time. I also think there was one other use of it, but I can't remember where exactly; I just know it was early on, perhaps even in the first book as well.
I agree that they don't have to use language so long as the names stay intact. My only gripe at this point is that they were adding cheesy alliterative words to Sanji's attack names in book 21; yes, the French was there, but with an added English word… it started sounding a little like 4Kids again. >_>
Yeah, I'm really happy when Viz uses footnotes to explain Japanese things instead of Amercanizing it.
And I have nothing against Viz not having the F -bomb and S-bomb in their books, that is pretty far and not all that necessary. As long as long as Sanji is sticking to crap and not poo or something comeplety kindergarten. I never noticed "damn" before, mainyl because I notice and am annoyed by "darn" all the time, but also soem of my volumes are different editions, like vol 1 has Zolo as Zoro's name but my vol 2-4 have Zoro unchanged, weird huh? I'll look into the scenes you pointed out and make see if there's any differences across editions or something.
I think people blow the "name changes" thing in Viz's One Piece way out of proportion.
Zoro - Zolo
Loguetown - Roguetown
Tweet Tweet (so minor it's barely worth mentioning)
Diggy Diggy (so minor it's barely worth mentioning)
Climatact - Climate Baton (actually a valid translation)
What other name changes have been made?
I mean yes Nefertari Vivi was translated as Nefeltari Vivi….inconsoquential.
Also, there have been no artwork edits in One Piece yet.
Yes there are. .
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Also, there have been no artwork edits in One Piece yet.
It's only discussed one page back.
One thing I noticed when comparing my first five Viz volumes with the corresponding tankobans is how badly Viz did some of the SFX. Maybe they're better now, but they mangled many a panel in those first ones with ridiculous size sound effects.
Yeah, their effects were way too big early on in the series. That panel of Captain Morgan going down is painful to look at. They've gotten so much better since they started using more suitable sound effects and kept roughly the same size and format of the Japanese ones.
You mean the sound effects? =/
ALL Viz manga have sound effects translated, not just One Piece. They've gotten much better since the beginning.
"bu bu bu teh sounds effectz r 2 big!!" DX
really. chill out.
I wouldn't care if they changed Usopps name to Pinocchio or Luffys name to Mr. Fantastic, (well, maybe I would slightly), let alone some minor dialogue changes. I'm buying each and every one of theses volumes regardless of what happens. I've waited too long.
PS: Crossword, your icon is awesome XD

Lets see: Neptunians, Kami, Zolo, Roguetown, Merry Go, … Oh Come My Way, uhh... I think Sanji's attack names were changed, Tweet Tweet and Diggy Diggy...
There might be more but I can't remember them at the moment. Hope that gives you a couple pages of materian  .
There's been quite a few more than that.
I'm wondering what Viz is going to do about "DON!" when they get to Franky's flashback. I doubt they'll use don, but I hope they don't go with some stupid sound effect like 'bang'.
Do it with a bang actually sounds pretty cool. Someone earlier said do it with gusto. There are many ways they can phrase it.
The ONLY sound effect edit that has been bothersome was on the panel of Morgan's defeat. The rest have been unnoticeable to someone who reads both versions. Really, I hardly noticed anything about them except that one I could read and the other I couldn't until you morons stared whining about it (aside from the fact that one was readable and the other wasn't). Really, your brain should be able to fill in most sound effects just by context, but whatever.
I'm wondering what Viz is going to do about "DON!" when they get to Franky's flashback. I doubt they'll use don, but I hope they don't go with some stupid sound effect like 'bang'.
Yeah because DOOM wont work either.(seen DON is DOOM in a few volumes)
That's what Viz changed the sound effect to. I'm not sure how it's supposed to be pronounced though. Is it like dune with an m or is it like the original sound effect with an m? I'm guessing the latter but…
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Zoro - Zolo
Loguetown - Roguetown
Zoro-Zolo is stupid sheerly because his damn name has appeared in English on wanted posters, and they had it RIGHT originally. (Also, Zolo does not roll off the tounge as well, nor is it a real name.) They changed it to match 4kids shit. So THAT is a stupid change, particularly since its a main character and its glaring every single time his name appears ever.
And its really SUPPOSED to be Lougetown. As in proLOUGE and epiLOUGE, NOT as in villinous Rouge. It changes the entire meaning and literary intent of the name, and may also be of import at the the end of the the series.
The other stuff is indeed, pretty inconsequential and can be chalked up to different translation or so minor and 1 time note as to be inumportant.
Neptunians, Kami, Zolo, Roguetown, Merry Go, Oh Come My Way, Sanji's attack names, Tweet Tweet and Diggy Diggy…
If these are corrected, than i think Viz's stuff is basically perfect. Cause really those are the only ones that bother me. (and Shove it but oh well)
Tweet and Diggy is that bothersome? Their fighting styles do no really involve saying the name more than once to be a huge problem.
Surprised no one said "Bad Manners Kick Course". That is about the only thing that threw me off. "That crap king" too.
Tweet and Diggy is that bothersome? Their fighting styles do no really involve saying the name more than once to be a huge problem.
Not to mention, they are only mentioned once. It'll never happen again.
Unless Lucci ate the Kitty Kitty fruit.
Kitty Kitty Fruit, that would be weird to see.
Lucci: I ate the kitty kitty fruit.
Luffy: Sounds Weak
Lucci: Model Leopard transforms
Luffy: screams
The only thing that bothered me about the zoan devil fruit is that there is no set phrase. So of the uses say "model than animal" while others say "animal type". Why hasn't viz settled on a single one yet?
Speaking of CP9, I wonder how they're going to handle Rokushiki. Some of the moves like Rankyaku and Geppou translate into English pretty cleanly, but Kamie and Soru are a bit awkward. Since Unlimited Adventure didn't translate them from what I remember, I can't help but wonder what Viz will do.
I don't think ti's so much the slight absurdity of certain name changes that bother people, but that it's compounded by HOW MUCH name changes there are. I wasn't that bothered by Zolo when it first appeared, but eventually I got sick of all the random and dumbass name changes and Zolo and Roguetown definitely stuck out the most. I'm sure if the only name change we've ever gotten was Tweet Tweet, people wouldn't really give a fuck, but alas, if only we were so lucky. It's kind of like a straw that broke the camel's back situation.

I was re-reading One Piece the other day and I noticed how they don't change Zoro's sword names, maybe because the translation would be clunkier or maybe because it's the whole "names don't get translated" deal.
Anyways, I figure if a set of names is too clunky to translate, Viz might not bother, but I don't think this will be the case and they'll probably just straight up translate them to "Moon Step", "Shave", and ugh "Finger Gun" and such. I mean they usually translate character moves, and those could be two or three words too. It'd kind of suck, but you couldn't really fault them at all for not being faithful.

just so I have an unbiased argument, would you mind posting specific pages that I could compare? I just looked at my English volume and saw nothing wrong. Could they really be THAT bad compared to it's Japanese counterpart?
Try the panel where Morgan is taken down. That was probably the worst I've seen. And I think Shave and stuff work pretty well in English. Maybe it's just me.
I still see no crucial problem with the sound effects.
I wish I had a picture with me. From what I remember from reading it the sfx are almost covering the entire panel.

Would you happen to know the exact panel? I literally looked through all of volume 1 and found nothing that caught my attention or was diminishing the beauty of the art. Also if the sound effects are a little too big, who cares? When I see Luffy or Zoro saying one of their epic quotes and I see the big "DOOM" in the background, it just really magnifies the significance of the moment for me. The onomatopoeia is meant to give more of a feeling. And many have mentioned that the big sound effects never occured to the extent that they did from volume 1 ever again. But people still complain about these silly art edits. If you want to complain about anything, complain about "Zolo" or "darn it". Not something as trivial as enlarged sound effects. (That was not directed to you, Sea Stone.)
The thing is it wasn't in the background. It was covering up the panel. I'll go find the page number and panel and be back.
Edit: Chapter 6, Last Page, Middle Panel

Ok thanks I appreciate it. I really want to see. But it never happened again to the extent of this one time, correct? So what's the big deal?

People are getting upset because Viz is imperfect. I'll still pick up the manga, though, regardless of sound effect translations. After all, I'm buying it for the story, not for CRASH!!, SLICE!! or WOOOOOOooooOOOOOOoooooOOOOooooooo.
In this instance, it's a shame that the sound effects will actually take away from Tom.

I know! What, will Tom do everything "with a doom?"
Maybe they'll just say something along the lines of "with gusto" or the like.
Well, there's no problem with finding a substitute word. But one of the key things about it was that Oda used it a great deal, so it was a word you associated with the one piece manga for a good long time beforehand.
Whatever they chose to replace it won't be.
The worst one I remember was the bottom left panel here…

In the Viz version it was translated as "Schwing" I guess someone over there never watched SNL. Either that or Luffy got a boner from watching Nami cry.
