SWEET! Can't wait to watch the episodes with Funimation's subs.
FUNimation Simulcast Discussion

Holy crap…
I mean...just...HOLY CRAP!!
I wasn't expecting this at all! If I'm understanding right, then starting at the end of the month, Funimation's going to release THE LATEST episode from Japan only an hour after it airs, and SUBBED?!?!
This is the best One Piece news I've heard in a quite a while!
...Man, this reminds me that I still need to pick up Season 1: Fourth Voyage.
-
@Kairouseki:
Anyone know if this is on any other website than Funi's? Maybe another site'll be faster. Hopefully. And I think this is just awesome. Too bad VAs need rest or we might've been able to get dubbed episodes. Maybe not . How long does it take to dub an episode? Well, hopefully Funi keeps this up; this is why they're my favorite anime dubbing (and subbing) company. You don't see Viz doing this.
facepalm
^Yes they have. Where have you been? They've been subbing shippuden for free online on their website for quite a while.
if you spent too much time licking funi's balls instead of looking around you, you're bound to miss something. :(
This is awesome though, Funimation's getting their act together. I'm actually glad CN took One Piece off the air now. (Albeit the show does need revenue.)
-
Oh, god. This is awesome. But sadly, I'm not even remotely close to the episode they're on.
-
It typically takes about a week to record a full episode, depending on the series and company.
-
Oh man! Todays been a good day, but this takes the cake! DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!
The other good news, I'm surprised hardly anyone's noticed is the "simulprint" of the latest Manga chapters. This is great for people like me, who just don't like the aesthetics of reading scans on a computer.
Oh Funi, you've got my money, all of it, take it all away, you ROCK!
-
It's been a long, strange 5 years for One Piece anime in North America, hasn't it?
From it's humble beginnings toiling for 4Kids, after years of frustration and tears, it finally reached the promised land of Funimation. Now, it's become part of the New Age of Anime, with the Official Simulcasts, New fans get DVD's of the arcs that started it all, and old fans (in North America) are satisfied by being able to see the current episodes without waiting years for the catch-up.
Funimation, you've got my support, and my cash for years to come. I'll keep my computer on for hours to view this priveledge you've given us. salutes
-
This is just…so awesome. The manga's going through a catch-up...we're going to get simulcasts...I don't know how this can get any better.
looks around for the video game maybe later...
-
Yeah, Unlimited Cruise already is being released in Europe, it has to be coming to America soon. Personally, I'm looking towards older games. I want to see One Piece: Dragon Dream ported to the DS, and I wanna see the old Grand Battles released somehow.
-
Along with the jump in the manga, this is also amazing. The earlier episodes will really help since I only have Season One First Voyage and have been too broke to get the following sets.
But yeah, this is great. -
This is awesome news, IMO.
I always hate watching anime illegally, but now I won't have to, and I'll be seeing the newest episodes earlier than I usually do. (waiting for them to come up on YouTube, on Mondays.) And it's even more awesome that they're going to sub the whole series and put it up there (if I heard right, that is.) It would be fun to watch it again, since I watched most of it in 2007 and my memories a little lacking. XD (I stopped watching it in late 2007 due to not being able to find subs on YouTube and came back to it like earlier this year.)
I wish they could do the simulcast stream with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood as well. =/ But, at least they're subbing it and putting it on there.
-
Is it me or are the episodes on FUNi's site taking a long time to load? (Probably cause a crap load of people jumped on the site)
-
This is amazing and whoever thinks this isn't amazing is silly for thinking so.
-
@EvilGamerX:

As others have explained, it's because today was Funi's release of the new Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood episode.
It's always slow on this day. Except for when it's morning where I live. I get up around 10 am where I live and it runs really smoothly.
-
This is really good news (at least for people like me living in Canada)
Too bad their flash player sucks though. It takes a very looooooooooooooooong time to load, just like FMA: Brotherhood. And its not just because FMA and One Piece just got released, every time I try to load a video, it takes a couple hours to load. (compared to how I can watch it while streaming on youtube) The quality is not the greatest either.
They really should ditch the crappy flash player and upload it with HD on youtube.
-
That's weird, because as I said this morning the new FMA episode loaded really quickly.
I've also been rewatching Ouran High School Host Club on there, and it's loaded really fast for me too.
It just depends on the time, I suppose.
-
Really? Because when I watch Ouran on the Funimation site it loads just fine.
-
It goes without saying this is certainly a work in progress. I think considerable time needs to be taken for these things to sort themselves out.
-
An hour right after it airs is pretty damn impressive.
-
Yes yes yes. I am so excited fuck yes.
-

Yeah, this is something I don't understand. Funimation HAS a YouTube channel. They've already got shows up there. Why are they bothering with this?
-
The subbers weren't a threat until now. Now they become direct (illegal) competition they have no choice but to send C&D's.
It's not like Funimation has been releasing season sets with subs for a year now, so this is the first time subbers are an apparent threat.
-
Well, I'm trying to be impressed by streaming 391, but frankly, I'm failing. It's 5 seconds of movement interspersed with 30 seconds of buffering. This is on 7Mbps cable; I can't imagine how people on lower-rated connections are doing. (I should try it at the office on 1.5Mbps T-1 for a real laugh) The video itself is of good quality, during its regular stops, but I'd expect that with the right choice of codec, animation content compresses well.
I do like the relatively browser-agnostic flash player (it's working in freaking Opera!), but if it takes 90 minutes to watch a 25 minute episode, I remember why I like the manga better (I can read an entire tankoban in the time it's taken to make its way through the opening theme!)
-
It'd be nice if it were faster, but it's not that big a deal. It's not like you don't have to sit and wait when you're downloading the episode from a torrent or a download site. Just start the video, pause it, and come back when it's ready to play.
-
Fingers crossed someone finds a way to record it to a video file and download it. I have a collection going, y'see, plus I want to be able to catch my friend up.
-
wow when did all of this start happening, there is a god. Thank you GOD! Thank you Funi!
SO there going to do a super catch up on One Piece as well, and the newer chapter will appear in shonen jump late of 2009, I love this country.
-
there is a way to record the stream from the us region
there is a way to download the video (as .flv) from different regions! but i'm fairly certain that since it's said to be illegal, i shouldn't be saying how to do either
-
Oh dammit, just go ahead. God knows there's a million descussions on illegal material here.
-
Yeah, this is something I don't understand. Funimation HAS a YouTube channel. They've already got shows up there. Why are they bothering with this?
Higher quality and more hits for their own website, thus more money for them. However, the report did say there's partner sites, YouTube is probably one of them. What I don't understand is, why is FUNimation just a plain ol' YouTube channel? Actual companies have channels on there dedicated to a single series, which have full episodes in a single file, no 10 minute limit.
Example: http://www.youtube.com/show?p=DmJMgpU45BE&s=1
Yet FUNimation is just like someone with the name NarutoizPw4nzors. Hell, they've even had a significant amount of their own videos removed for "Terms of Use Violation". No, no, I'm not shitting you, I'm 100% serious. They need to break some deal with YouTube. Tho I imagine they're trying to save money.
-

that would be cool to see a few of the GBA games..i wish the animal one got ported years ago
EDIT: guess with this i can stop seeing if it would appear on the main TV channel:ninja:

http://video.funimation.com/FLV/FUN_ONE_PIECE_391_JPN_360X360.flvI managed to get that URL myself with DownloadHelper as long as I clicked it before the Toei logo finished… but I figured it wasn't the episode due to the whole 360x360 thing... Welp, 200mb. Take that people who said "LOW QUALITY!!!"
Average 50kb/s on high-speed internet... Well, Goddammit.
-
Yeah, this is gonna take a while …
-
-
Whoa, I didn't know this was gonna be announced already  It's loading really slow for me too, they're probably getting pounded pretty hard, also strange that they'd leave the .flv out in the open like that.
I'm also kinda shocked because I did that episode only earlier this week and it's already up
Anyway, if anyone's interested, we do have a little more freedom with names and terms now, though they still have to be approved (and sometimes they get changed), but if anyone has suggestions for upcoming names/terms and all that, I'm all ears.
One thing I might do which I can't really do with the simulcast is post some translation notes on my currently-neglected OP blog for each episode as they air.
Anyway, time to get back to work on 403!
-
So, looking at it like this:
May 14th: One Piece 1, 2, 391
May 30th: One Piece 403If my hunch is right, then it is possible we will see 392-402 before the 30th. I noticed that if they aired each episode daily, they'd be at 402 by the 25th or so. Then I thought that is was aybe only weekdays, so consider this a possible schedule:
May 15th: 392
18- 393
19- 394
20- 395
21- 396
22- 397
25- 398
26- 399
27- 400
28- 401
29- 402Therefore it may be safe to assume that we will receive an episode every day Monday through Friday until May 30th, when we will get the weekly Saturday night releases.
Now the point of all this. Notice we already have Episode 1 and 2. I have no solid proof, but my theory is that we will also get an old episode or possibly two on Monday-Friday alongside the Sabaody catch-up period. A possible theory is that we will get old episodes on Monday through Friday after May 30th, with new releases on Saturday. While this is 100% speculation, the point of it is that the old episode releases have a GOOD CHANCE of catching the DVD releases. Meaning two possible outcomes:
a) We get old episodes premiering on the website before making their way to DVD
or b) Quicker DVD releases to accomodate the possible speed-upAGAIN, THIS IS 100% SPECULATION and I don't have a solid release theory until we actually see Episode 3 on the site.
TL;DR VERSION: 391-402 may be released Monday through Firday until May 30th, when they will take a weekly release schedule. We may possibly see old episodes in dub form released as well, which, if they follow a M-F pattern, we could see old episodes in dub form before they hit DVD, possibly as early as July or August. Again, it's only speculation.

Holy Shitnuckles, Mato! So it is your work! Explains the quality, they better be paying you well. I do have a suggestion, Camie should be Keimi, I believe. There's a pun in her name concerning her birthday. I'm sure some Japanese speakers can elaborate. Also, there's not much FUNi can do about the .flv thing, welcome to the world of internet addons. We don't want you to get in trouble, but any info you can spill on it, we'd appreciate.
-
-
Mato you lucky bastard. You get to see the episodes before the JAPANESE PUBLIC! Give me your job, plz.
-
Yeah, it never dawned on me till now, he does! Dude, there's gonna be some serious people jealous of you. Let's hope the computer you work on is different from the one you post on, cause some people are probably gonna hack ya to try and get an advanced episode, especially when things start heating up.
I know you can't say much, but could you possibly say up to what episode number you have? Or do they only give them to you one at a time?
-

Actually, other industries do tend to pay more, but there's no fun in translating refrigerator repair manuals More than anything, it's just an incredible honor to even be doing this.
Like I mentioned, when I come up with the lists, they get sent to Toei and they go through everything and approve/disapprove/change things. The fact they left Camie as Camie if it should be something else is strange, but they must be fine with it since they did ask other things to be changed.

Yeah, and it's F'in WEIRD. It also multipled my respect and admiration for the animators and the actors by 500. I also get to see early versions of the scripts before things get cut out due to time restrictions, etc. It's cool stuff.

Heh, good point
Right now everyone's still kind of figuring out a routine for how this is going to work (which is why I'm surprised the announcement came this early) so it's kind of weird and I've been doing episodes all out of order. 391-393 are done though.
-

I have nothing to add for upcoming things (seeing as I don't read ahead) but as far as the subs are concerned, I prefer Gomu Gomu no XXXX. Translate the XXXX whether it's English or Japanese, but keep the Gomu. Save Gum for dubs. As usual, Zoro's attacks should be treated the same as Sanji's or Robin's.
-
I just watched episode 391 on the site, they did a freakin awesome job subbing it. KEEP IT UP FUNIMATION!!!
-
So, you can't reveal anything really, but are you allowed to mention little opinions with no real content? For example, when you get to that point, if we asked how Boa Hancock's voice is, would you even be allowed to say "I like it." or "I don't care for it."?
-

I think "Gomu" isn't gonna happen. "Gum" is still one of those things Toei is already told them to use, so I don't think it's changing.
and about leaving things in Japanese. I'm not Mato, but I'm pretty sure it's not his decision. If he leaves something untranslated, he'd probably get told by either the higher-ups at FUNi, or Toei to change it.
Also, I want these to be like DVD subtitles, IE No Translation notes. If anyone thinks the Fansubs are going anywhere, they're nuts. If you want your Fansub style subtitles, nobody's stopping you from going there and getting them, but those of us who like Professional level translations are finally getting that, so It should stay that way.
But I REALLY wana know how they handle "Ambition"!!!
This is gonna be so exciting to watch professional subs week after week!! -

Well, when I translate these, I'm doing three things at once:
Translating for the DVD subs (whenever/ifever it happens)
Translating for the dub writers (I have to include lots of stuff you don't see, like speaker names, tons of notes, etc.)
Translating for the simulcastSo I still have to abide by the same stuff we've always had to for the DVD subs. So I can't up and change Gum-Gum to Gomu Gomu no.
So, you can't reveal anything really, but are you allowed to mention little opinions with no real content? For example, when you get to that point, if we asked how Boa Hancock's voice is, would you even be allowed to say "I like it." or "I don't care for it."?
Yeah, that kind of stuff would probably be in the safe zone.
-
Honestly, give it a rest about "Gomu" and whatnot. I'm not demeaning your opinion or anything, but I like the FUNi Piece has an "accessible" dub of sorts, where most everything is translated except some rare names that are generally easy to understand what they mean. I mean, compare this to Bleach, where all of the attacks are untranslated, and when they were "accessible" to Japanese speakers, they were nothing but jibberish to the show's English fans. It's just to make everything easier to understand to the speakers. Sanji and Robin are special cases, as their attack names are even foreign to its Japanese audience, and should remain as such for its English audience.
-
Yeah, that kind of stuff would probably be in the safe zone.
Haha, you'll probably be getting lots of questions and stuff. God Bless your PM box. Or will you be making these comments yourself?
-
Mato, can you answer me something?
In a few episodes from the one on the Streaming site right now, Reyleigh does this thing where he knocks some people out by just looking at them, and then this guy turns to him and says something about his "Haki".
How did you Translate that term?
