I was watching this and remembered what Greg was saying about Ninjas being better than Pirates because history couldn't tell if someone died of natural causes or if they were killed by a ninja. Could that be because Ninjas are a myth altogether?
Do you think Ninjas really existed??
-
-
Ninjas used to kick ass. Used to. It's da pirate age nao, mothafuckah. But they existed. Oh yes, they did.
-
I'm pretty sure they existed
-
Be careful what sources you trust.
Especially one that calls Ninja Scroll a, what was it, "…sweeping epic."?
Ninjas existed. They weren't nearly as FUCKING AWESOME as we've made them out to be but they were around. In fact, the first moments of that saying, "There's no records of institution or clan prior to the 20th century."
Really? I wonder what scholars said that. Funny they didn't name names.
Anyway, I'm totally open to hearing the other side of the argument but it's true that groups of secretive mountain people existed and were hired for using trickery in their methods of attack. Did they call them 'ninja'? That I don't know. And were they fucking awesome wraiths veiled in deep purple? Doubt it. But suggesting they didn't exist is absurd.

Interesting topic is interesting!
The thing to understand is that for a long time, death dealers were needed. Assassins and mercenaries have been needed in the past to do dirty work. Look at the the assassinations and attempted assassinations of the past. Look at Cesear.
Now granted, Cesear was NOT assassinated by a ninja (awesome as that sounds). There has had to have been at least one or many tales of an assassin to completed his duty without being seen or heard.
It's like Greg said, nobody knows they were called ninja. For all we know, a group of people who wanted to pose as past assassins may have been called ninjas. But no one knows.
Where did the word 'ninja' originate from?
-
Weren't ninjas just another form of samurai?
-
-
Weren't ninjas just another form of samurai?
Not really.
Samurai's have much more background and 100% official information. Their chivarious fighters that fight and learn through the teachings of Confucius.
I had to do an entire essay on the impacts of Confucianism on eastern society, and I was shocked to learn that Confucianism was the major cause of the existance of samurais.
Ninjas of the past were often known to cause pure chaos amongst society.
You could loosely say that samurai are much more like knights or heroes, while ninjas are usually like pirates, thieves, or assassins. However, I'm sure not all samurais were saints, and not all ninjas were pure evil.
-
i've read that Ninja never actually dressed like we depict them today. If the source i read was correct.. they were often dressed as peasants or handlers of dead.
-
Actually they dressed and acted roughly the same way as samurai. The major difference was the lack of a code of bushido.

Both are probably correct.
The idea was for them to blend and while today we associate them with being dark and in the shadows, they really just took on disguises of people you wouldn't expect to kill you.

Huh i always had this sort of impression that the samurai was the cream de la cream of japans military power and stood out among normal people with in both clothing, fighting skill and weaponry/armor.
And that a ninja was basicly just a real sneaky bastard who stabbed people in the back, fought with any weapon he could loot of a corpse and if force to fight used every trick in the book no matter how cowardly or rotten it may be.
But i guess thats what you get for trusting television, Should make a mental note that Samurai pretty much equal Ninja.

The black-garbed hidden ninja image came from Kabuki. The people dressed in black would be the ones manipulating props originally (supposed to be invisible with use of imagination). When ninjas were used in Kabuki, they would be one of the prop handlers who would come out of their prop moving positions and become an actual character (effectively deceiving the audience).
They did make use of trickery and such, but weren't the masters of shadows that people believed they were.
-
From what I've read Ninjas almost never wore black(if they even existed) because it would be dumb to, as black isnt a color that exists in nature. They would wear dark blue or grey as those colors blend in with the night and nature…uh, naturally.
Anyway, a tribe used for assassinations doesn't exactly seem convincing enough that there was an organization of assassins in ancient Japan. I mean, there have been poor people used as tools for assassinations all throught history.

No, ninjas are a myth. Like ice, or the female orgasm…

Would you like some iced tea?
NO SUCH THING! falcon punch
-
Weren't Sanada Yukimura's "Sanada Ten Braves" all ninjas??? or is it just a legend?
-
well they were in Samurai Deeper Kyo. And we all know that's about as accurate as history gets!!
-
Do Spec Ops soldiers always run around in combat fatigues? No, because it would make them stand out too much. Anybody whose job is to kill the target, escape undetected, and await further orders tries to blend in. This is nothing new, and was just an extension of logic and observational skills many centuries ago.
I am likewise interested in seeing the names of people who work in the field of anthropology or archeology who have disputed the existance of ninja.

Wait, so if ninjas looked like normal people, does that mean Gekko135 is a ninja? Buuhan1 is a ninja? Greg is a ninja? Ao Kiji is a ninja?
Oh God! I'm gonna get assassinated!
-

So basically your argument for the existence on ninjas hinges on whether they were a giant unified organization or not. If they weren't organized, ninjas simply didn't exist is what you're saying if I understand correctly.

well guys it seems that this one knows too much.
no big deal Kaba Kaba… just watch your back. :ninja:

My old teacher from last year said ninja's were real only they sucked at what they did and eventually ceased to exist. In other words yea they were real only they sucked…..ok awesome i threw in my 25 cents for this topic of discussion.
Oh and im a ninja too so Kaba Kaba....beware,ninja attack sucka.
Fact: ninja's are supposed to wear orange when they kill
-
BTW, those of you arguing that the Illuminati created ninja, you'd be wise to consider that the Japanese don't commonly use the term 'ninja' to refer to them so yeah, you'd be right in a way, the existence of 'ninja' is questionable. Much like the name of the country isn't even Japan. I wonder if that exists.
-
this is just a little tid-bit. but I heard a very important tool in a ninja's arsenal (if the source i read was correct) was a short sawing tool. It had many different applications of course, but i just find it interesting since a handsaw is one of last things i'd expect a ninja to have.
-
The way I have understood it from my Japanese history class (that really only very, very briefly touched on this) is that ninjas developed as a sort of counterculture to the samurai. They were practioners of ninjitsu, which is not merely a form of martial arts, but a way of life.
Basically…ninjas were hippies that killed.

Somehow, picturing a ninja trying to saw their victims' arms off like a piece of lumber seems really…...dumb.
The victim could be all like "Hey, what are you doing!?" and the ninja would be all like "Ah! Don't mind me! You won't even know I'm here!" and when he gets back to sawing off the limb, he's like "Stupid...grunt...calcium enriched...grunt...ligament!" :ninja:
-
i don't think the saw was used for killing.
Just a thought
-
No, ninjas are a myth. Like ice, or the female orgasm…
You make me love to hate you with every post, exactly the same way I feel about Croc.
That aside, ninjas did, in fact, exist. There were many famous ninja back then that were brought back as anime characters for either better or worse. However some names of real life ninja are unknown, there are some ninja in folklore that are considered famous, like Sasuke Sarutobi
-

No, I'm just saying, there isn't a ton of accurate information on ninjas in general. Like, I've known people decended from Samurai, but…ninja? Nope.
-
That's because they were outcasts. Mountain people.
Finding people related to samurai isn't difficult. If someone has significant money in the family, they probably came from a samurai family. There weren't a lot of class choices in Japan then.
But finding people related to what were essetially mystics that kept to themselves and weren't (as far as history knows) particularly wealthy?
Yeah…
-

well what do they call them then? and where did the word ninja come from then? And then I think of Ninja Murasaki from Dragon Ball. (love that guy) They used the word in that instance. Do they call Naruto "ninja" in japan? (i mean nippon)
-
Ninjas existed. Proof:
-
This proves… well... nothing.
-
This proves… well... nothing.
Come on… it's real footage of real ninjas. Why would it be written "ninja" on their headband if they were not ninjas ?!?:ninja:
-
no no no. those were not ninja. A ninja disguises his true identity until he is ready to strike
like this guy:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="
"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src=" " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></object> -
Ninjas like in Naruto not only existed, but they exist right now!! I know this because chakra exists and I can use it. Why, just this morning I did a "Breakfast no Jutsu" to make myself some Eggo Waffles. I went up to this box, did a circular hand sign and yelled "Hikari ni Nare" and suddenly, BAM, hot waffles!
…
But in all seriousness, I pretty much agree with omae. Much of what we envision ninjas today as is likely fictional, much like anything romanticized from urban legend. Knights are the same way, except it is possible a few knights really did act stereotypically back when we said they did.
I would like to believe makibishi to have been an actual weapon, though. Especially for escapes.

No. I'd much rather just pull out a gun and shoot you in the face in front of a crowd before going on my way.

I can't answer the second question. I'm not into the whole 'samurai, shogun, ninja, katana, bujutsu' aspect of Japan. At least not yet. Most of my reading and study is in the 600's and 700's and that which extends to more recent dates is almost exclusively 'religious' study. However the answer to your first question is: 'shinobi no mono' or just 'shinobi'.
If I had to venture a guess to your first question I'd say somewhere along the line they took out the 'no' of 'shinobi no mono' and changed the characters to their Chinese readings. That's failry obvious but the WHY and WHO is associated with that choice I do not know at all so I can't offer any evidence.
-
ah, just like the old nintendo game! that's kinda cool.
-
Im not saying this is true or not but this what I heard about ninjas. They were farmers who honed their skills because they were caught in between the shoguns and samarais fighting or whatever, some weapons included something like a hoe, throwing star things called shruikins that they tipped with poison, they made spiky bands they could climb walls with and knew techniques to squish an artery or something along that line. Also they sometimes worked for shoguns and ceased to exist after the collapse of a dynasty..I think
-
They have to, where do all the story's come from.
-
@Muscle:
They have to, where do all the story's come from.
Were does the stories about Unicorn and teh Dragonz come from? :ninja:
-
they do exist….....in imagination land?
but seriously yes they do/did......
-
Ninja's have never existed there like the mafia, the japanese government made them up
-
Ninja's exist: I am the living example
Yes, I am a ninja
(so much for stealth and camouflage) -
I know ninjas. Under mah post is one. And there is always Na-ru-to so we can proof that there is has to be ninjas somewhere. And and there author of Na-ru-to is ninja, like OP maister is fish-face!
