That gameplay video was really epic! One Winged Angel playing in the background only added more flavour to that pie!

Cloud VS Sephiroth? AWEXOME SUPERNOVA!1!
Right you certainly are!
No really, that was some great gameplay footage.
-
The Squall v.s Sephiroth fight in the trailer made me hopeful that cloud wouldnt be in this game. I'm sure the fans would rage if he wasn't. But ff7 has gotten far far to much attention considering its probably one of the most linear and boring Final Fantasy games of them all. People just like big swords and bishies.
Mind you I am baised being that FF8 is my favorite game. I guess I just don't want FF7 to take over what could be a good game. If this becomes another final fantasy seven sequel I think I might just give up final fantasy XD
srsly
FF7
Crisis Core
Dirge of Cerberus
Last Order
Advent Childrenam I missing anything?
-
The Squall v.s Sephiroth fight in the trailer made me hopeful that cloud wouldnt be in this game.
LOL, c'mon seriously?
Though I must say, for as big as VII is, its nice to see that all the FF games have actually been well represented throughout in all the media surrounding the game since day 1.
-
Mr. Prince, Dissidia is a game that will represent all Final Fantasy games equally. There isn't one duo from their respective game that will overshadow the rest.
Emphasis on a particular character will be solely at the discretion of the player.
-
While I understand that's what promised I can't agree completely until the game is released. If I were square I would make the smart business move and throw the characters who are more popular in there more. They sell more copies that way. Don't forget under it all square is still a business and they do want to make money
-
Woah, Sephiroth does Supernova? Again?
Sorry for my cynical buggery it's just….hmmm. Yeah. Overdone blah blah. Sephiroth and Cloud are annoying blah blah.
Now Sephiroth getting his colon cleaned by an Onion Knight? That I'll pay money to see!
-

I didn't think of it that way.
Seconded

Were you honestly not expecting him to use that move in the game?

They put off Sephiroth and Cloud for a long while to bring more emphasis into the other Final Fantasy characters. I would agree with that argument if the first duo they introduced in the roster were Cloud and Sephiroth! But no, we got Garland and Warrior of Light to kick off the roster list.
Hell, even fan favorite villain Kefka was obviously put off for a long while before they finally confirmed him. I'm liking this move by SE because they're finally giving their classic line of games some much needed exposure after about a decade of 3D pimping.
-
Were you honestly not expecting him to use that move in the game?
I was expecting they might give him a new move. It wouldn't hurt to be creative, something they haven't been able to accomplish in a while.

It seems the opposite to me. It seems that whenever they reveal video game stuff they put the least favorite stuff first all to waste time before the 'BIG REVEAL'! JUMP is especially guilty of such a pattern. Whatever though, I'm not actually going to complain about the order they unveil characters. That's just smart business.

I'm Still Pissed That FFXII Doesnt Make An Appearence

Well, not any more creative than TERRA GOES ESPER FORM or KEFKA goes BAT SHIT DEMI GOD FORM. C'mon guyz, Give the FFVII "buughh" a break already :getlost: Im being super serial heer :getlost:.
On the topic of creativity though, I will say that Bartz's "mime" style of play sounds really creative and I'm looking foward to giving him a shot when I get a PSP and my paws on this game. It was on record to say that the FFV story mode was supposed to play totally differently from the rest.
-
I honestly think the OMG FF7 IS OVERHYPED AND DOES NOT DESERVE ANY PRAISE people are much worse than the FF7 fanbois.
FF7 is probably top 5 of the best RPGs of all time, no arguing that.
-
Well, not any more creative than TERRA GOES ESPER FORM or KEFKA goes BAT SHIT DEMI GOD FORM.
I would agree with that if, you know, we weren't inundated with toys, merchandise, movies, side-stories GALORE and people telling us why we should like it for over a decade.
It's not so much that I dislike the original product, rather I despise what it has become.
-

Greg DOES make a good point.
I remember back before FF7 had any sequals. I wanted Aeris to be alive again. Now? I don't give two shits. Aeris no longer seems 'human'. She's like a ghost that exists every no and then, DEAD OR ALIVE!
It's like the characters turned from 'interesting, well depthed characters', to 'legends who have no personality'.
-

Well, for arguments sake, the gameplay video we've seen doesn't mean that we've seen all there is to Sephiroth's gameplay. I wouldn't be surprised if SE is deliberately keeping other moves a secret that can only be seen when the actual game is purchased by buyers.
It seems the opposite to me. It seems that whenever they reveal video game stuff they put the least favorite stuff first all to waste time before the 'BIG REVEAL'! I could also make the argument that if SE were to reveal Cloud and Sephiroth first in the roster, then it would prove that they're more ga-ga over Final Fantasy VII than any other game in the series and intended to use that tactic to bring in the fanboys and girls.
Introducing characters from the classic roster was a smart move for them because they're finally acknowledging their roots, not their blooms. Hell, on the official site, they're even showing gameplay videos of the Famicom versions of the first three games.
-

Well it's obvious to care less and less about a video game character, when said game is over ten years old. But yeah.. having obnoxious fans and crummy products thrown at us doesn't help.
I had previously mentioned that i'm glad they are portraying cloud in his ORIGINAL OUTFIT rather than having the advent children version. To me that signifies that square is going for the more traditional style of VII rather than the blown-out, over-marketed, super-spin off image of FFVII that we all know and have forced on us today.
I'll agree with those who've said that they don't care for what FFVII is seen as nowadays, but i'm attempting to look at this as it's own game (a crossover compilation of final fantasy), rather than just more of VII's lineup of merch. Yeah, I will be playing as Seph and Cloud.. cause I liked that final fantasy. And I expect them to have their signature moves… it makes the most sense.
Wether it's played out or not... if the source material is done justice and seems to actually retain substance and care, then I have no problem with seeing Seph and Cloud fight for the quadrillionth time (to "One Winged Angel" none-the-less).
-
Wow….you guys are totally biased against FFVII, I know how you feel, but...it's as if you see it as...NARUTO.
Anyways, I think Clouf will have his Advent Children outfit, it's the only other outfit I can think of, unless use a Zack swap, I know they wouldnt go for his KH outfit, since it's original FF.
Is that thing from FFXI playable, cause if it is I hate it already, it just doesn't fit...with sword awesomeness.
-

That's pretty much how I feel about Final Fantasy VII. I like the original game, but all of this milking of the original has almost made me stop enjoying it. I'll admit that I had a bit of a fanboy attack when I found out Cloud and Sephiroth were in Kingdom Hearts. I was pretty excited after hearing about Advent Children, too. But now, I can't believe how many spinoffs we've been seeing.

Agreed, I may come of as a complete hater of FFVII but I enjoy the original property quite a bit. I just personally feel clouds ego is going to get way to big with all these new games and stuff.
and to who ever made the little comment about how people like me who think FFVII doesnt deserve any more attention are worse than fanboys and that its one of the top 5 rpgs of all times "no argument there" needs to learn to watch his tounge thats completley opinon based and biased. just like my side is, everything I have said here has been introspective about my hopes and opinons for the game so screw off dude.

But they'd never do it. It's practically against their very souls to do something like that. On new franchise reveals they always reveal the hero first. Then in spin-offs or side-stories where the main character isn't in a starring role they hold off the big guns until the very end. But again, it's not a really important issue. It's just smart sales.
Wow….you guys are totally biased against FFVII
How so? What stake do I have in the franchise to benefit from being biased? I purchased the game on September 7th 1997 before my first day of high school. I played the shit out of it. It blew my fucking mind.
Then SE felt the need to dig its claws in so deep they might as well break off into a new company that exclusively creates FF7 merch.

Whoa whoa whoa… Hold on.
FF7 is NOT a bad game. It was, and still is, a fantastic game. We just hate the fact that it is being spammed til' no one gives a damn.
Not to mention: take note of your last statement. We can't hate on the sequals of a game that we've played, but you can hate on a game that you haven't played?
Not to mention, the sword thing is BS. Kefka doesn't have a sword.
-

well said Greg. I remember those days.. when I had to borrow my friends PS1 to play the damn game (which i had to rent). Then i got my own ps1, and played the damn game for like half a year. And you know what? I totally wanted more! After beating the game, I read fanfic after shitty fanfic (there were some good ones) and hoped for a sequel with all my heart.
yah know… if they would have released all this FFVII shit back then... things might be different. But they didn't.
Not to say that I outgrew videogames (oh hell no), I just outgrew final fantasy VII. But I gotta hand it to a single game to have my attention (and many others) for sooo damn long.
And I wont lie... I reverted back into my teenage self when I heard about and saw Advent Children. Then, like a drug wearing off... i stopped caring again.
Like I said above.. I have no problem with seph and cloud doing the same old shit in this game. The game isn't about JUST them yah know? I'd be kinda pissed if they were not in it like everyone else.
-
Anyone else feel like Sephiroth got totally jipped out of an EX Mode? The other villains get all their cool final battle forms (hell, Kefka gets the full-on god form), but Sephiroth just gets a cheap-ass wing slapped on his back… Lame...

So you're complaining about a game you liked because the company that made it decided to cash in on its success?!
I find this mindset people seem to have just baffling. I liked FF7, so why should I be upset when the company gives me more FF7? As long as its good stuff, hell, let 'em make sequels and spin-offs until time stops. The seventh game was so good it spawned a franchise in and of itself. That's not spamming or whoring or whatever, that's success.
At least they didn't make any 7 sequels as bad as X-2. I mean, dayumn…
-
At least they didn't make any 7 sequels as great as X-2. I mean, dayumn…
You're right, X-2 was incredibly fun to play with an excellent job class system and a focus entirely on fun minigames and goofy character interaction, that covered its mediocre storyline with fantastic gameplay. The 7 franchise takes itself too seriously and hasn't managed to do anything nearly as infinitley replayable, yet still retaning mediocre story quality. Nor should anything related to 7 try to be that fun.
I mean, Crisis Core ain't bad, even if it DOES make it more ludicrous that Sephiroth went nuts and that Cloud made friends with all of Zach's friends and screwed up his memories and none of them bothered saying anything about it for years…
-
X-2 DID have a horrible story. But GOD was it fun.
But that's just it: FF7 sequals have made the characters seem LESS human. X-2's sequal made Yuna and Rikku seem much more fun and hyper. FFIV remake recreated the personalities of each character (even if Cecil and Kain are boring).
The few characters from FF7 that WERE improved:
Yuffie (still hyperactive and funny, especially her appearance in Crisis Core)
Zack (although he acts like a LESS annoying Tidus, he's interesting)
Reno (FUCKING AWESOME)
Rude (read Reno)Cid and Barret didn't change, so that's why they aren't on the list. They both are still awesome. And why the Hell don't we ever hear from Red XIII, God damnit!
-

Another case of stupidity. It's popular, so I won't like it anymore.
It's people like you I hate, whose to say I ever really like it all that much? Fact is the only saving grace to that game for me when I was a seven year old was aeris. I maxed her, she died.
SO uhhh… about Dinal Fantasy Dissidia?
-
Woah, Sephiroth does Supernova? Again?
Eh, I find it awesome that they incorporate their signature moves into their movesets. From the screens it looks like Xdeath has those white orbs of death, Golbez Meteo, Kuja with Ultima, Kefka with Forsaken (weeell, there is a screen with his god form and it all going white), so Supernova is fine with me.
Also, I so called bartz being a mime. Mime party w/Bahamut = goodbye, Neo Xdeath.
Edit: all this FF 7 ranting is going downhill fast…

I just pre ordered my copy from play aisa anyone doing the same?
( has given up defending himself or his beliefs and going to be on topic)

So you're complaining about a game you liked because the company that made it decided to cash in on its success?!
Of course not. Why would I complain about anyone trying to cash in on anything? It's smart business.
My complaint comes from their ADD-like attention to EVERYTHING ELSE as a result of focusing on FF7 bullshit, not one of which has managed in any way shape or form to match the original.
If all the resources devoted to making FF7 spin-offs of every kind at Squeenix were devoted to making, oh, I don't know, THE NEXT FINAL FANTASY or THE NEXT CHRONO GAME or A NEW EXCITING FRANCHISE THAT DOESN'T COMPLETELY SUCK ASS maybe I wouldn't complain. But when a company concentrates THIS MUCH on a single product while pushing out inferior forgettable products or a decent game every 1/4 decade, it's infuriating.
When a Squaresoft game came out it used to mean something.

I wonder if she'll have a villain, or if all the new extra characters will just be there on their own.

I feel like I'm the only one who loves al of the final fantasy games and understands each story villain and character.....
yeah it sucks they haven't made a new chrono trigger blah blha blah...and I'm pissed too..but they are making tons and i mean TONS of new games..it seems like all the whiners are just whning because they THINK their Final Fantasy deserves a prequel or sequel or remake.
gawd what is the point. I think people let things sour for themselves.. Is it me, or do those screenshots make it look like Shantoto does that laugh over everything she does?!
When a Squaresoft game came out it used to mean something.
Yeah, when we were teenagers and got boners every time a video game told a movie-sized storyline. Now we're older, and RPGs like that are everywhere. Squaresoft isn't the RPG company anymore, and members of it from back in those days have left to other companies, or to form their own.
It's not Final Fantasy 7's fault, it's us growing up, and the genre and business evolving.
-
^ i dunno if I agree that Square was consistantly making some sort of thought-provoking or prolific rpgs, but they were making unique ones of very high quality. Now they're rehashing the fuck out of games that werent great to begin with! And FTR, I'm older and the storyline to Xenogears IS still VERY meaningful and thought provoking. Square really hasn't made anything of that quality since, and FFVII was the beginning of the mediocrity so it's easy to understand all the hate.
FF7 is probably top 5 of the best RPGs of all time, no arguing that.
Are you shitting me?
I have never played a more overhyped and underwhelming rpgs in my life.
I hated the convoluted story and the obnoxious flat characters and the so-so materia system. I'm not a graphics whore, so this is easily one of my LEAST favorite in the series and my least favorite rpgs in general. And killing off a character way before I got a chance to even get attached to her wasnt some super emotional moment. It was just like "okaaay…" I dont care about this death nearly as much as the game wants me too, I guess.

Honestly, FF7 isn't my favorite RPG, but it's definitely one of the better RPG on the PS1 (FF8? Chrono Cross? Legend of Dragoon? None of those are better than FF7, only one I'd give it to is FF9)
And then you look at some of the newer RPGs, and I still don't think anything compares to it.
How the hell were the characters flat? I don't think an RPG has ever had such a diverse and lively cast (once again aside from FF9). FF8 had the dull, bland characters.
Things get popular for a reason. I'm not saying shit like Twilight warrents being popular, but it delivers to it's intended demographic. FF7 delivers to everyone.
Maybe I haven't played enough RPGs, but games like Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, they just weren't as memorable as playing through FF7. Chrono Trigger probably holds best RPG of all time, but FF9 and FF7 are both pretty close.
TLDR : My opinions are right, yours are wrong

Wow.
Yeah, when we were teenagers and got boners every time a video game told a movie-sized storyline.
I wasn't even a teenager. I'm not talking about Playstation. I'm talking about cartridges. When every game they put out was phenomenal because it had to be.
Now we're older, and RPGs like that are everywhere.
What? There still hasn't been an RPG that's overtaken Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6. As a result of focusing energy on one product and avoiding other ventures I would agree RPG's ARE everywhere today. But 90% of them are dog shit.
Squaresoft isn't the RPG company anymore, and members of it from back in those days have left to other companies, or to form their own.
That's absolutely right. And I wonder why that is….
It's not Final Fantasy 7's fault, it's us growing up, and the genre and business evolving.
It has nothing to do with me growing up. Every old RPG classic is STILL just as good and nothing has taken them over yet in overall quality. That which you could sit back and enjoy the experience, not wondering about what goddamn sequel, prequel, sidestory, cell-phone game, graphic novel, movie, etc. etc. would come out to expand on it. They were satisfying unique and instead of meeting expectations, they exceeded them.
More like devolving.
-
So allow me to summarize most of the VII discussion here…
"Why do you hate Final Fantasy VII?"
"cause it sucks"
"Why?"
"cause it sucks"
"Why?"
"cause it sucks"
"Why?"
"cause it sucks"Call me when worthwhile developments actually arise.
In the meantime. I have to say that Bartz's EX mode looks pretty awesome. The mastered job level stars over his head are a great touch. Zidane and Kuja look really nifty too.
-
I hope so, cus it's pretty awesome. She's such a crazy asshole, if she did her laugh for everything I'd be more than amused.
So…Shantoto would laugh over...everything?
"I kicked you in the stomach! Ohohohohoho!"
"I just shit a steaming pile! Ohohohohohohoho!"
"My hut has been repossessed by the greedy bank whores! Ohohohohohohoho!"Yeah...

Square really hasn't made anything of that quality since, and FFVII was the beginning of the mediocrity so it's easy to understand all the hate.
SOooo am I the only person who understands the point of each FF game….I swear people just don't like what they choose not to like..or couldn't comprehend when they were young...
Maybe I'm the only true Final Fantasy Fan... yeah I'm going with that...Of course you're saying that, it's the cool thing to say
TLDR : My opinions are right, yours are wrong
lol So whoever said that about the Chrono cross thing…...it was orgasmic.. id ont see how ppl don't love that shit...the story was superb and so enchanting....most ppl who again..don't really lsiten or comprehend becuz they were young and junk didn't even notice it was a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger..but again I only expect a true fan to understand :P

@Kaba:
Is it just me or does it look like Bartz is asking Squall to spare him some change?
Its supposed to be something along the lines of "It's filled with really tough-looking guys. And anyway, just look at it!"

Except I felt that way IMMEDIATELY after playing the game and used to get in daily arguments in HS with friends about how disappointed I was playing through FFVII. I was just totally underwhelmed by the writing and I found the steampunk setting jarring for a long time. It's easier to understand, if you realize I played VII almost immediately after VI and the bar was really high. I was expecting an equally amazing story and cast just with next gen graphics. What i got was a cheesy, anime melodrama filled with scifi-babble and shallow bishie character, and oh yeah…humongous boobs.
After having a well-rounded female lead, that was just disgusting.Honestly, FF7 isn't my favorite RPG, but it's definitely one of the better RPG on the PS1 (FF8? Chrono Cross? Legend of Dragoon? None of those are better than FF7, only one I'd give it to is FF9)
XENOGEARS!!! It literally takes FFVII and crushes it with its tiny pinky. 80-90 hour game. Meaningful characters, complex and MATURE storyline(not the teeny bopper angst bullshit in FFVII). MUCH cooler battle system. Actually TWO cool battle systems, cg and sprites used well together for the first time. GOOD voice acting and use of both english and japanese dub work. Do I need to go on?
And then you look at some of the newer RPGs, and I still don't think anything compares to it.
What standards exactly are you judging by? Size? Because there are longer games.
Graphics? Because there ARE prettier looking games.
Style? Oh, yeah there sure arent any futuristic, pseudo-scifi steam punk rpgs anymore…
Characters? The characters in FFVII were shallow and underdeveloped. I felt more connected to the fucking Frog in Chrono Trigger or the DDRing mouse girl in Musashiden. It's like every character is as confused and disconnected from the overall story as I was.
And it really didnt help that everyone kept rallying around the little self absorbed prick who did nothing but bitch, brag, and tell everyone else how little he needed them.FF8 had the dull, bland characters.
FFVIII has a nearly identical cast to all the same stereotypes you see in FFVII. WTF?
Loner, self absorbed leader. Check.
Ultra sweet, house wife type unexplicable in love with the leader. Check.
Hyperactive, kung fu fighter person who is often a burden or superflous to the overall story. Check. I guess Tiifa and Zel were slightly different from one another but still..eerily similar.
I'm too cool for school and I like to remind everyone of that with a fashion acessory or cigarette:Irvine and Cid.
I mean, there are slight differences in the minor roles but if you dont see similarities between Cloud and Squall or Aeris and Rinoa, you're blind.FF7 delivers to everyone.
I'm part of everyone. Not to mention, I have friends who didnt play and rpg until IX or X and they went back and played VII and HATED IT. The big deal about FFVII was the graphics, which are now outdated, and the cinamatic feel, which is now common place in every videogame, so there's nothing left but a mediocre rpg in pretty packaging.

they are making tons and i mean TONS of new games..
I dun wanna get into THIS argument, too but LOL. SRSLY?
ALL Squeenix does is rerelease old games and sequels to their FRANCHISES. The last new game they made was what? The World Ends with You and it was awesome so I expect to see 16 bland sequels and no new titles for atleast 3 years."Why do you hate Final Fantasy VII?"
"cause it sucks"
"Why?"
"cause it sucks"
"Why?"
"cause it sucks"
"Why?"
"cause it sucks"That's usually the argument when I ask people WHY FFVII is so fucking amazing and it's always "well a lot of ppl like it so obviously, you cant argue that it sucks. Or the graphics are pretty.."
SOooo am I the only person who understands the point of each FF game….I swear people just don't like what they choose not to like..or couldn't comprehend when they were young...
Maybe I'm the only true Final Fantasy Fan... yeah I'm going with that...If being a true fan is mindless devotion even to inferior products, you're welcome to that.
I never claimed to be a diehard FF despite playing 90% of the damn series. There are really good ones; FFVI, FF4, and FFX, and there are really meh ones like 7 or 9.
