It was Luffy's first time up against a logia user. It's mere speculation whether Lucci would or would not know Croc's weakness, as he may have battled logia users in the past, and he seems intelligent enough to know water > sand. As for preparation, he probably does know a fair deal about one of his "allies".
If he does know water > sand and can use water, then he'd win. If he doesn't, then he loses. Simple as.

Lucci doesn't have PLOt in this fight and he doesn't get situations he can't HARM Crocodile and therefore he dies.

Lucci is a physical fighter and that is all there is to it. Physical fighter's can't harm Logia's WITHOUT PLOT and he does not have it in this fight.

Ok, I read through your entire post. By all means, I think Lucci's smart and a lot more powerful than Crocodile. Thing is, if Lucci attacks Croc even before he manifests his power, he has an opening, right there, in which Crocodile can just touch him with his right hand and goodbye Lucci.
Lucci has Soru. Crocodile can appear anywhere he likes if there's sand around. I think they're pretty even on that aspect.
If Crocodile acted like a confident fool and let the fight drag until Lucci found his weakness, he'd sure as hell lose, if not he'd win. This is my view. :P

Well I am a slight Lucci fanboy but my analysis of their fight was purely logical. It all comes down to wheter Lucci can figure out Crocodile's weakness. If he does, he wins because physically speaking, Lucci is vastly superior to Crocodile. It all depends on how smart he is and I believe the man who is smart enough to figure out gears so quickly and to get the idea of flooding the tower of hesitation would be smart enough to figure out his weakness especially when Luffy did. It all depends on Croc's regeneration ability. As soon as Lucci figures it out, it's over for Crocodile and I'm sure Lucci is smart enough to figure it out quickly.

I think the fight between Lucci and Crocodile is pretty subjective. I'll agree that Lucci is pretty smart, but it'll be a matter of luck (or plot if you would have it) if Lucci discovers Crocodile's weakness. Being that Luffy found out only after his blood was spilled onto Crocodile, there's no telling how Lucci might find out about Crocodile's weakness. It might be that Lucci would eventually win anyway because, once Lucci fights, nearly loses and spills blood on Crocodile, he would then find out about Crocodile's weakness and win the battle over. That would depend on the extent of Lucci's battered state in that case.
Of cos, if Lucci could find out about Crocodile's weakness beforehand , like maybe he deduced Sand's weakness would be water, then Lucci will more than likely kick Crocodile's @rse ;p
Therefore, I'm also for Lucci's probability of winning being higher (in a fight, you can never be sure, just like in quantum physics).
But Luffy owns them both ;p. I just can't stand it when people say "Luffy would have lost without Gear 2nd" or stuff like that. C'mon, Luffy was fighting with his techniques. Saying things like that is akin to saying "Zoro would have lost without his swords" or "Sanji would have lost without his legs" or "Crocodile would have lost without his Sand Fruit" or even "Lucci would have lost without Rokushiki". Luffy's honed battle techniques are a part of him, so you can't just discount them as something like an external power-up. He is, afterall, exchanging that power for a portion of his lifetime.
And he is, afterall, gaining experience along the way, and making use of his Devil's fruit ability to the largest extent. If you call Gear 2nd a cheat, then you're basically saying that ALL Devil's fruits abilities are cheats, and there'd be no point for contention. Lucci used his Leopard fruit optimally, so did Luffy, at that point when they were fighting. Luffy's ability trumped Lucci's. That's that. Aokiji is the Marine's Strongest, because of his Hie hie no mi. That's that. So why don't you ever hear anyone argue "Oh, Aokiji is would have lost without his Ice powers"? Because it's ridiculous! He has that power, so use that power when you argue in his case for being so powerful. That's the same for Luffy and his Gears. Why can Luffy use Gears? Because he's a rubber man! Why are you trying to say that he can only use his rubber powers in one aspect but not the other? He was just being creative, and that's just Luffy! So please, don't even mention things like "Luffy without Gear 2nd would have lost" EVER AGAIN. Thank you.Sorry, back in point, since Leopards have good salivary glands, it could be the case where Lucci tries to bite Crocodile, and realises that his teeth can penetrate Crocodile's flesh. Then Lucci will win over Crocodile after he realises that water in his saliva coagulates the sand and make it unable to disperse properly. So that increases Lucci's probability of winning again. Sorry for the digression.

But saying he would have lost without them makes it sound like a cheat. Luffy was just doing what Crocodile told him to do so long ago. And that is to use the full potential of his devil fruit. It was always in him. Saying that he cheated is like saying Crocodile cheated by honing his devil fruit to always turn his body to sand when hit and not just when he's aware of danger. So I completely agree with you Archtyrant. Rob Lucci was a beast whose combat abilities were the highest Luffy had ever faced and he needed a power up in order to beat them. Luckily his devil fruit provided^^ Oh and I believe Rob Lucci could be smart enough to figure out his weakness with just knowing what Crocodile's devil fruit is.

For about the 100th time, Crocodiles sand weakness is no damn secret…..unless you're a retard. Morai is a Shichibukai with a 320 million bounty. There's no way he's going to be a pushover in the slightest. All we've seen the guy do so far is manipulate his own shadow, which is probably just a facet of the many powers he has. He'll be strong; it's just a matter of when his strength is going to show up.

just look at foxy, you wouldnt consider him stronger then say arlong would you? yet foxy is sailing the grand line and were causeing alot of trouble for luffy.
