A little too close for comfort.
Gift and curse.
(20 characters)
It's sad, because if you look at his matches where his hair smooths out he really does look fucking hot, then he puts it up in the afro again and he looks stupid.
I was referring to Morikawa's penchant for both fleshing hos characters out while dragging things out but yeah Takamura's pompadour is played out.
Ah. Yeah, there's that.
Four new chapters:

I know it's all about going into Ippo becoming punch-drunk, but he is such a fucking idiot sometimes.
The problem was that everyone had become aware of it but no one came out and said it directly. Ippo lost his edge, I am surprised he was allowed on the ring after that spar.
I mean this series has been going on for so long I am not sure what is the scope of the story is anymore.
The final goal is still Ippo becoming world champion. Or at least it was. I'm not sure if that's the goal anymore, given the way we're going with his health problems. Takamura we HAVE to see get all six belts, or else that's just unfair. But considering how long this series is, we might be another ten years to finish that.
I am so fucking sick of this series. We're doing this NOW?! After all this buildup to get Ippo back in the ring, he's gonna have to leave again and get over something else?! That or whoopsie, false alarm, he was fine all along, just too into using his new Dempsey. God, can't we just have one fight where Ippo comes back and crushes a scrub, why are we dragging this out with a guy way out of Ippo's league?
^ You mean another one cause there was that guy Ippo demolished in his comeback fight after the Date loss.
While I could probably live with Ippo having to end his career after this fight and the series ending, I'd like to see his slips and falls in this fight be rationalized away as his subconsciousness telling him to cross the line, but his consciousness struggling to do that, so he's getting all out of whack. A punch-drunk ending would really make Ippo feel like he was indeed just a symbol of Morikawa's own health struggles, which I think would be a splendidly bittersweet ending, but I think both the fans and Morikawa need to see Ippo overcome this possibility and achieve what we've been waiting for since Ippo defeated Sendou.
I really don't think I can handle a bleak ending for Hajime no Ippo, a 20 year struggle full of hard graft ending in early retirement would just break my soul

I like the idea of the moral of the story being "sometimes great people just die out of nowhere", but I do think it would be more satisfying to have Ippo finally sync up and start murdering all of his opponents in the ring.

Yeah it is a good idea for an ending of a story, but just please not here not in Ippo. With the amount of people the series has inspired to just end it on such a downer would be a real kick in the teeth

Well that and it would look painfully ironic with all the guys Ippo sent packing from the division or from the sport altogether.
Should I change/delete the poll? It's been there for over a decade.

Given how pointless the poll was to.start with I don't see why not.

Wasn't that Ashita no Joe's thing?
Wasn't that Ashita no Joe's thing?
From what I've seen, it was built up with Joe thanks to the series' overall tone. Ippo, on the other hand, is within his own universe still a pretty big thing, as opposed to Joe being his own underdog.
I think that they are playing the broken card really heavily. I mean, to me it seems that Ippo has gotten scared of coming home all beat up, Takamura kinda told him with the monster line, the kind of determination one has to go through, but Ippo did not really figure it out. It might take Takamura to come from his locker and tell him something mid fight.
Although, if Ippo is really done for, and he might have one more fight in him. This might mean that his final fight would be against Miyata, both broken and then the show can focus on Takamura getting his titles.

What would Miyata be broken from given he barely fights and I believe one of the earlier developments from the series is that it was becoming harder for him to stay a featherweight.
Well from what I got Miyata is struggling if Sendou's comment is anything to go from. He wouldn't be as broken as Ippo, but the latter would be the underdog either way.

A broken brain is something to be scared of. That's why football players are starting to drop out, and they are protected by helmets. Boxers get it strait to the skull.
But I like that idea of Ippo fighting one last fight against Miyata. I never saw Martinez as a real opponent, he still seems so out of Ippo's world. I would love to see Sendo fight him though, that would be an interesting fight.

I think the guy Miyata beat before Randy jr. was supposed to be his goodbye to the fight with Ippo. The whole reason why choosing was such a big deal was because there was too much effort into staying there and the timeline of their career wouldn't allow them to meet again. Plus I think we saw Miyata or his dad mention that he might be going up a class soon.
But Miyata vs Ippo is definitely what I would want as his last one. That's the one he really wants as opposed to what people want for him.
Finally this manga is coming to a close. Yay!

Hopefully we get at least a few more seasons of anime before that happens.

Absolutely, I am not saying it isn't validated, but even Takamura told him, that he got to be Japan's strongest at his weight thinking about boxing as a hobby. Ippo is determined and disciplined, but his life with his Mom and his family duties, hearing the concern of his loved ones (mom and waifu), has got him thinking about home and not entirely in the fight. He is thinking about showing gratitude, not the fight he is in. He is off, he is doing things for others and less for himself ultimately.
So what I understood from Takamura is that when you cross that line to the world, there will be people that do not think about that and are only thinking about winning. And these monsters will focus their entire life around their profession. So Ippo cannot attempt to come into the world thinking about paying respect to the coach, coming back home, etc before even stepping on the ring. Which is what we are seeing with his obsession with using the new Dempsey Roll.
If Ippo really wants to keep fighting he has to commit fully accepting the consequences. This is assuming he is not punch drunk and blanking out. Fight through that fear and challenge the world again. That's why when this fight started I thought we would see a 1 hit K.O clean. So I am interested in seeing where he is taking this with Ippo. But the kid needs to understand that he is strong, the question is if he can commit and cross that line.

Well if Ippo is not punch drunk, I would assume his fight with Miyata might prepare him for Ippo's fight against Martinez. So he would have to fight him after this. Or the one after. I am thinking mainly on this untold Miyata condition that makes it seem that he cannot stay in the current division any longer.

Reading this I actually would prefer seeing Ippo's final fight against Miyata rather than Martinez. It has more meaning.
If he and Ippo finally get their showdown, he can then rise to Jr. Lightweight (and stop killing himself with weight loss) and fight even, dare I say it, Volg?
Whatever happens, his fight with Miyata cannot wait any longer.
I imagine that if Ippo keeps going Volg and Miyata will be Ippo's sparring partner for his fight against Martinez.
I imagine Miyata will be Ippo's first title defense after defeating Martinez. That would give Miyata an excuse to be able to admit he wants to fight him.
Ippo just have serious motivation issues and lack of goal in his fighting career.
Problem with Ippo is that he really don't have ambition to be World champion. He does not seek fame or fortune but just trying to understand what it means to be strong, and also get a match with Miyata.
Everyone is hoping Ippo to become World champion but until he really sets his goal to become world champion he's fights will be half-hearted.
Only way to get him fired up is to make match personal.
Kamogawa will die and ippo will start fighting seriously out of remembrance, only way i can see him getting serious
I imagine that Speedy-guy from his gym would be his first title defense. Unless they would want to go with his other rivals. The thing with Miyata is that he is at a limit too. So I doubt he could keep waiting 1-3 years depending on how many matches does Ippo have before his match with Martinez. Preparing for fights can be as short as 1-3 months on a semi-active fighter, but that is asking a lot.
Is Miyata not the best of Asia? I can imagine Miyata going against number two, and Ippo fighting Miyata to get another shot at the title. That might get Ippo to commit more.
If I recall back in the day the idea of fighting Martinez made Ippo excited, but it wasn't his ultimate goal. And by now even the excitement seems to have faded.
! So…Ippo lost, sadly. Seems there was a comment made by the author that 'Hajime No Ippo will continue in the future!', don't know if he'll take a break now or we'll get a flashforward. It sucks that the 2 years of build-up led to nothing.
Well, that was…that was...huh.
What just happened?? Really? :wassat:
What a piece of fucking shit ending.
author pulled a slam dunk ending.
really hope this is the end and he doesn't try to make ippo come back from this, it would send the wrong message
Slam Dunk ended with the highest stakes imaginable and the characters accomplishing everything they needed to do. Ippo's final fight was against some random scrub that everyone expected he'd be able to smash through and it happened at the most awkward timing.
Wait, what's going on, is Ippo really ending? I half-dropped/half-put-it-on-hold after that awful Woli match. Up until then it was one of my favorite manga despite it's flaws and repetition, and I'm really concerned and disappointed by what I've heard about rest.
Well, at last the author had the guts to end this trainwreck.
Someone pinch me quick…
This is hilarious, everything got thrown out of the window.
I just came by to say that this manga has in my opinion, turned into trash.
I have no idea where the story is going from here. I guess, I was so used to these type of stories, that at the start of this fight I thought it was going to be just a one hit knock out. Turns out to be completely the reversal, Ippo not only lost, but his boxing career seems to be ending.
If it's really ending and not a temporary crisis I would expect at least a fight with Miyata even if it's a private one.
Wait what the series is ending?? What??? Last I left it was about 2 year ago and it was in manga filler! Did some massive development occur? Or is it just… over? That's tragic. He really should've wrapped it up while he could. You know. By skimming through a couple fights and developing the key ones until Ippo became the champ. Instead we got... 4 or 5 fights that progressed nothing... and it's over now? HOW?
The author said on Twitter that the manga will continue. We'll have to see where it goes.
What a garbage ending. Terrible writing, just awful.
