It may not seem like it matters much, but it kinda does considering that it just shows that Viz barely cares about One Piece at all considering their starting to use crap like "monkey man" instead of the actual character names.

So I got JoJo 9 for Christmas today, and I'm more and more impressed with how VIZ is doing it up. It's miles away from their other adaptations, except for maybe Gintama and Reborn.

Well well well, expect the next three issues to have three chapters each. Volume nineteen will have ten chapters so…in fact volume twenty also has ten chapters. Volume twenty-one has nine, and volume twenty-two another ten, with twenty-three having another eleven.. I can see Viz doing fve chapters a month when publishing volume nineteen and twenty in the magizine, then going back to three a month and then back to five a month for two months and for those eleven in volume 23...a part of me wants say a five month-er and a six-er but...I do not know...if we're lucky...groan I would rather Viz published five chapters a month for eight months to get through all twenty...
The above is my prediction for the next few months of JUMP.

Well because Rurouni Kenshin is a semi historical piece so being accurate in regards to it's "foreign-ness" is kinda important.

It's not historical at all, it's the same stuff Oda does by naming his characters after pirates in One Piece.

You make the mistake of assuming the average OP viewer is a snot-nosed elementary school kid.
It's more accurate (and likely) to say it's a rabid weeaboo. Even elementary school kids, like my sister, can be very informed on localisation and regional changes in manga - as per her experience with Mixx's Sailor Moon - and going to specialty shops in China Towns were the people actually have a clue.
Sure, there are people who get all their goods from WAL-MART and HOT-TOPIC, but don't stereotype all those people as every fan.
Not saying that Rurouni Kenshin ISN'T a fantasy story as well… but you should get my point at least...

Kenshin is little more than Watsuki taking a historical name, slapping it on a shounen character and making some vague references to politics and issues (as if he would know) of the time.
I think the argument is that if the setting is clearly Japanese, Viz can take a lot less leeway in trying to "westernize" the dialogue and names, because they're part of the intended flavour.
With a series like OP, the setting is clearly NOT Japan, so there is much less percieved need to preserve the Japanese feel. People aren't EXPECTING it to be culturally intensive.

That I know. I believe they also did it for Volume 28 with Jonouchi' calling Malik "Malik-chan." I just wondered why every other suffix honorific was cut off except for that one. Then, you said JN Productions and I remembered they have a habit for doing that. However, I'm debating if it was just a decision on their part or a decision on Viz's part, (which, honestly, makes my head hurt.)

Which is why I'm saying that if the pun goes over people's heads. Why would those people even care if the pun stays intact since the only one's who will even notice it are the one's who get the pun in the first place.
Some people might see Bon Kurei and think it's a shitty way of Viz spelling Bon Clay. They're not going to get the pun. They're not going to think it's clever the way you do. Those people are just seeing it as a name so all in all Bon Clay hurts no one.

Well not everyone has the same sources as your sister. Heck when I first saw Sailor Moon I didn't hear about all the awful edits until YEARS later. Same way with DBZ. A truly bad dub or localization is one in which it's fairly obvious to a newbie or it's just less enjoyable regardless of whether you're familiar with the Japanese version or not. That happened a lot with the 4Kids dub of "One Piece".
As far as Bon Clay/Bon Kurei is concerned it's no big loss at all, it's not like his name is totally different. I'd like for it to stay as close to the Japanese version as possible and they could've used Bon Kurei with a translation explanation, but you know, it's not worth making a huge fuss about.

Precisely. As Ubiq argued so long ago, OP has a dualistic appeal; it has action for the kids, and some "wow that's cool" stuff for the adults. Loosely speaking, since the roles could just as easily be reversed.
There's no harm to the kids in keeping the adults entertained, wouldn't you agree?

You're basically saying, "if no one gets the pun, why put it in?" which not only screws the author over for his research into making an appropriate and making other puns related to it, but cheapens the written merit of the story.
Which is more creative, naming someone after a holiday then building a theme around that and some other factors, or pulling a name out of one's arse (like Christopher Paolini) in an effort to sound archaic/mysterious?

It's more like he used a summary of a certain event as a backdrop and filled it in the blanks to suit his own needs, and even then, this format was abandoned before the Shishio arc. Kenshin is not an authority as far as history (or physics) are concerned - it's just another form of Flame of Recca and Naruto.

After having read comments from Japanese businessmen on demographics, I concede OP is written for children - but you're still missing the big picture here.
Puns and the like we could consider "creative writing" are part of a manual of style for books written for younger audiences. They're a consolation, in a sense, for the older viewers to remain entertained or to get - this is uniform across cultural boundries. Oda isn't the only one to do this - Rowling did it to. As did Tolkien. As did Lucas and Roddenberry. Certainly, the latter didn't write his stories for kids, but the style (in case someone was looking) is still there. It's the mark of a clever writer, a signature only the perceptive are capable of noticing.
What Viz is doing is basically erasing that signature so no one can enjoy it.

Not really. I didn't think 4Kids was very localised at all until I noticed the "RICEBALLS" became "COOKIES" (which, I must admit, even back in sixth grade I knew better than this).
I guess my sister and I are a bit privileged, but I still don't understand why or how. Typically, when dealing with something that has a sub-culture, to get merchandise one must descend into the sub-culture to acquire it, either through a company who sells to the sub-culture or to a store that deals with it.
From your comment, I see I learned more in second grade about Japan when my Dad did research to purchase Power Rangers Zords for Christmas than most low-level weeaboo today learned through the same experience of buying merchandise. I'm still unsure of why just yet.
