Well actually Horohoro said his name was "Horohoro" but he said to call him Trey racer or something.

@Skull:
The translation quality of the Viz version of the manga is pretty mediocre. They leave stuff out (jokes, laughs, puns, etc), change dialog, translate names and attacks wrong, and edit the art for no reason. I personally wouldn't buy it because I don't consider it accurate enough to the original and changing the mangas art for any reason is inexcusable, let alone because they "don't agree" with what Oda chose to name something and wrote out in plain English (Loguetown). There are probably other examples as well, like Zoros wanted posters and a bunch of other stuff.
Recently, they started leaving in the laughs. Wapol's, Ms. Valentine's and Dr. Kureha's laugh were left in, and just because they put somethign besides "Shot" after the french thing Sanji says doesn't mean it's translated wrong… I haven't found too many random art changes, but keep in mind, I haven't looked too hard. Zoro and Loguetown have been over already. Names are translaed fine. VIZ could do better (like they did with D. Gray-Man and JoJo) but they're doing well enough for me.

I do know he said Horohoro was his real name and Tray was a nick name. I was actually an avid fan of 4Kids' dub of the series. By no means perfect but one of their better adoptions in my eyes. However from what I've read about the original version, Horohoro is the nick name and I forgot what his real is. The point is, out of all the Mankin name changes, Joco is the lesser of however many evils.

I second everything you said there. Is the English adoption of One Piece perfect? No. There are minor changes I feel it could do without, but for me the important thing is keeping the correct story which, last time I checked, they do. Thus in my eyes, it's worth supporting. Who knows. Maybe it'll get better as time goes on. I've noticed a change in Naruto's adaption and while I realise it has probably ten times as much fan hype as OP, but who knows. Maybe they'll give it slightly better treatment as time goes on. One can but hope.

Wapol's laugh is 'Wahahaha!!', right? So What's Dr. Kureha's? and does anybody have a list of the unique laughs? I never could remember some, or didn't notice some. Apparently Spandam had a unique one. I never could tell what it was…

I myself actually had no problem with VIZ as a whole. Their handling of the ONE PIECE manga is too sloppy, however. I didn't even notice until you all mentioned it. For example:
Book 5, page 143 has Johnny call Nami "Sister", and only 7 pages later they call her "Brother Nami". Inconsistency. On 144, when Johnny and Yosaku introduce themselves, the Title box has "Yosaku" even though the speech bubble right above it says "And I'm Yosuku!!". Sloppy translations. And I don't know about the rest of your volumes, but the art, like on page 10 and 153, looks like crap with poor scanning.
And this was all one Volume. We could go into the poor Pirate lingo dialouge, inconsistencies with the Kanji (Smokers jacket was edited, but Garp, Coby and Helmeppo's wasn't), cropped cover art and the "ONE PIECE ONE PIECE" logo, and others, but we obviously have covered that enough.
EDIT: Rixter - My bad.

@LC:

That's in the Japanese volumes too, actually. Oda uses pretty thin lines in some of his art, so they get harder to see when they're shrunk down to volume format.
-
What chapters are we talking about here? Cause I ain't seeing no "Yosuku" in my SJ issue.
As for Smoker's Jacket, that translation was only in one panel, ever, they haven't covered up the kanji since then.
-
Book 5 (For Whom The Bell Tolls), Chapter 42 (Yosaku and Johnny), page 144. I might be able to scan it.
-
Ah, OK, then I am looking in the right place.
Going back to your post LC, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the "brother/sister"' thing. Theres a joke behind it.
Johnny first addresses Nami as "sister" to which Nami responds "Don't call me that!" Few pages later Johnny call her "brother" cause Nami didn't want to be called "sister". The response here is "Does he have to call me 'brother'?"
Go back and read that chapter. It all connects perfectly.
-
OK, fair enough. I didn't know it was a running gag.
Oh, and here's the scan:
-
Hmmm… "Zolo" eh?
What the edition of that book? First printing, Second printing, etc.?
-
Actually, did the fifth book go through a reprint? I thought it was only the first four? Anyway, even if it was a reprint, that means they had the chance to change it, but didn't.
But yeah, I bought this a month ago, so it's still pretty fresh.
-
Never noticed "Yosuku" before… ha, I got a laugh out of it.

Yay, I got seconded.

Wait, people actually call it 'One Piece One Piece'? Laugh
To be honest, the person you should be blaming if the editor of that volume (the guy before Urian Brown came on, I think).

That's because she asked them not to call her sister, so they changed it to brother, which got her more annoyed.
EDIT: Ah sorry, i didn't read the post's far enogh back to notice someone already said this><

When is Chopper's phrase 'Point', like 'Brain Point' or 'Walk Point' introduced?
-
Dunno, but it might be referred to as 'Boost' instead of 'point'. I prefer point, but boost is ok.
-
walk boost? for a regular raindeer shape? hahaha…
i could imagine "form" instead of point.. but boost seems silly to me. -
Nope, no attacks named yet.
-
Well the manga keeps the attack names most of the time so it might be kept as point.
-
Depends, actually, if they have 'licensed the name'. If TOEI wants to use 'Bootst', Viz Media will have to use 'Boost'.
-
I read somewhere that FUNi will be using "Boost" instead of "Point", suggesting that's the licensed name for the English adaptation. A pain, but a minor change in my opinion.
-
Well in my opinion boost sounds cooler to me but point is okay.
-
But Toei doesn't have any control over the manga; Shueisha does. So it could be either one, depending on if Shueisha wants to keep the manga and anime consistent (like with Zolo) or not.
-
That's correct, actually! LOL I don't know why I was thinking that…
-
so.. what IS his normal chibi form without rumble ball (brainpoint effect) called btw?
and does chopper have a full human form without horns (or fur) other then heavy point?
and how is his raindeer form (walki point) a boost in any way?
-

That's the standard Hybrid form, and mostly the base form of Chopper, giving it a name would be like calling "Standard Luffy" Gear1.
Nope. Even Arm Point keeps the Hoves and Horns, and I think only Jump Point doesn't have the horns. I actually find weird that Chopper keeps fur in Heavy Point, perhaps he's just an extremely hairy guy.
Walk Point/Boost is….Well, it kinda allows chopper to dodge atacks with ease, it's like the weaker version of Jump, pretty much like Heavy is to Arm Point.
I actually like the sound of Boost, even tough Points made more sense in the case of the Three standard forms...
-
Point sounds better.
Boost sounds too much like "booster shot"… :/
-
Based off of what Lobster said, then Boost would make more sense, as Chopper is taking medicine to do this stuff… Still want them to use point because it's what was original and stuff, but I can live with boost.
-

Oh yeah, that slipped my mind. I have heard that FUNimation will be using the same names as the manga (Smoker, Ace etc.) which is why I thought if Toei made "Boost" the official English name (heard FUNimation may be using it), Viz would be using it. Must have gotten my facts the wrong way around.

That's an interesting point.

Ditto.

There's seems to be a list of the top 50 manga properties for Spring 2007 with One Piece making it to number 14.
http://community.livejournal.com/mangacast/544222.html
Nice to see it in the top 15 but there's still a huge gap between it and the other Shonen Jump series.
-

Wait… x.x no...
Boost is lame...

Even Pokémon beat One Piece. I've only seen like one or maybe two Pokémon mangas on a shelf!

Tis a sad day for all.
-

The reason Viz doesn't sell One Piece is because thet always shrink the cover image, and give it the SAME dumb gold look. Oda designed the One Piece letters to be diffrerent colors for different Volumes. Once again, Viz "does the stupid".
-
I think the cover's look good. They are pretty much the same except for the title and there are some color changes on the cover, but it's mostly lighter colors.
-
Considering the Viz volumes are bigger, the images might not shrunnk at all. Maybe they just didn't enlarge them to have the same dimensions like for other titles.
And the coloring on the letters, oh boo hoo, that totally changes EVERYTHING. -_-
As far as that list goes, I wonder is it America only or is Japan included as well?
Because the Pokemon manga hasn't been in publication in the US in years.
-
Wow, I didn't realize the Death Note anime was over in Japan!! I just picked up the last issue and it kicked ass.

Viz only published seven of the books, which is odd, considering how the series is still going on in Japan (they're at something like twenty volumes now).
-
26 volumes to be exact I think the reason why they do not published them any more is because they did not sell well.
-
Well, hopefully Volume 15 will be released a month early, and it'll be on shelves next week…not likely...It hasn't released a month early since 11...

Funny, I got both 13 and 14 early. It probably depends on the store.
-
Yeah, I suppose. I saw on the store website that 13 was out early, I think it just took me awhile to get to the store. Idk.
-
My store usually gets new books in a week or two early.
-
I've been getting all the volumes early since volume eleven, so I expect volume fifteen to be out in a week or two.
-
I heard it was already out in some places. That and Jojo's bizarre adventure 8.
I went and looked the other day, but they didn't have it. Though they did have black cat 9. Wasn't that supposed to come out in august?
-
about the pokemon Manga
i think its still being made only under the label VizKids,(exaples of VizKids Mangas:Kingdome hearts original,COM,And Princesses.)
It going to be 2015 by the time we catch up to OP XD..

Jojo Volume 8 @ Viz.com
Black Cat Volume 9 @ Viz.comBlack Cat #9 comes out July third. In other words, it's been out for a week or two…in my store.
OP #16 comes out in November, but you can usually expect it a week or two early.
