Volume 109 Predictions/Discussion

Kuma bros it's our time at last
-
Gonna be interesting to see what SBS questions stack up in this volume, maybe. lol
-
I mentioned it in the last thread but I'm going to say this volume is called 'Kuma's Life'. Kuma will be the center focus, either running or smiling at the moment of his memory erasure, and around him in Paw Bubbles we'll see scenes from across his whole life. We'll see his parents, child Bonney, Aduly Ginny, Dragon sitting there, Ivankov, Luffy right before being sent away in Sabaody, when Kuma met Vegapunk for the first time, Bonney's Crew and then maybe that scene of child Kuma talking to Saturn.
-
My wild guess is that the cover is going to focus on Kuma's FB and lenght-wise it'll end up at the short side.
Title: "I've Been Looking for You!"
Cover: Kuma, Ginny (I know she doesn't appear in the volume anymore, buuut), Bonney (child form), Luffy (Gear 5th) and Jaygarcia Saturn (Hybrid form)
Content: 1101 - 1109 -
I'm feeling chapters 1101 to 1110 and "Starfall" for the title. Both that one and the chapter after would make fantastic endings, but I think after a month off a shorter chapter count will help the volumes from totally catching up and having to delay future releases.
The cover is a tough one though. Kuma is a must-have, and maybe a young Bonney. Saturn at least should be there, in demon form if he's alone, but I could also see the full set of five in human forms looming over the background. Maybe Vegapunk fits in somewhere, he hasn't had a major appearance on a cover yet. I think we'll see Luffy in the Nika pose again, like he's shown when Bonney realises her god is real. Yeah it's been done, but the marketing department loves their Nikas.
I think it's too soon to show any of the giants. Let them be a surprise (not that that always stops Oda).
-
One Piece Volume 109 will have 192 pages!! So it will contain only 9 or 10 chapters (from chapter 1,101 to chapter 1,109/1,110).
Probably it will have 10 chapters, because some chapters have 15 pages instead of 17 pages, and even chapter 1,105 only has 13 pages.
-
The math adds up. Doubling down on Starfall as the final chapter and volume name.
-
For 107 and 108, I was way off. I still think it is funny that Jack never made a cover for Wano.
I think this might be the first cover with Luffy at that age. That would be interesting as Oda mostly pushes Luffy into covers when I prefer he not. Kuma, Bonney, VP, and Saturn. I think they take center stage.
-
Doubling down on Kuma's Life and the cover being a big homage to that chapter. I don't think Oda should skip over the chance to give us a Kuma volume cover just so he can hype up the five elders (best to do that for volume 110)
-
It wouldn't be the best idea to draw five elders on the cover or use starfall as the title when their appearance is an volume-ending cliffhanger.
Kuma will be the star, since he missed previous one completely.
-
@Dahaka I feel like all of them showing up is something you could only guess from those details if you already knew it was coming. In an arc full of cutaways, and with the Five Elders already in telepathic contact with each other, it's not a huge stretch that they would get cover art. And Starfall is abstract enough to mean anything from an Elder beaten to just being an attack name.
-
I still think you'd want the reveal of the Elders forms and them being on Egghead at all to be something you save for the volume after they make their appearance. If they all showed up on Volume 109 then it would be obvious for a reader that they would be appearing in some form, and that takes away from the final chapter of the volume. It would also spoil their forms.
-
Yeah. The Elders feel better suited for the next volume. Kuma can't possibly miss a cover and his role is rather minor after the flashback ends.
And you could tell Oda was dying to make a Kuma-based cover from the last one.
-
I agree that 109 will be centered on Kuma and Bonney; I don't even think we'll see Saturn on the cover of 109. Rather, I think Oda will choose to feature all Five Elders together on a cover for the first time with vol 110, especially since their appearance on Egghead will most likely be the volume ending cliffhanger.
-
A volume cover "spoiling" its contents isn't anything new though, it's happened countless times before
-
Could be cool to have human Elders on 109 and demonic Elders on 110. Definitely wouldn't want to see the transformations shown off sooner than that.
-
Cover process!
-
The focus on the flashback is great, love the vibes of everyone doing the Nika dance. I wonder if you showed someone this at the start of the arc what guesses they'd make seeing Borsalino joining in and Stussy sitting it out. Reckon they'd be able to correctly guess which side each one ends up helping?
It does feel like a tease that the process video had an early version with Saturn. So close to seeing a demon elder's colours!
-
Also Stussy's flashback outfit is a glaring damnation of how uninspired her present day one is.
-
As I feared, the delay of the flashback cover to the 109th meant Ginny wouldn't make it. Sad day...
The cover looks nice enough. I would probably prefer a Nika silhouette instead of Luffy, but Luffy being in every cover aside from antagonist-only ones is a thing.
Also, good that Black Stussy got featured, nice design that only had one panel. And now I realized it was probably her as a CP 1~9 member. -
The cover is nothing speacial this time, I liked the last one better.
But it is not bad overall. -
@access-timeco Cora never made it onto a cover either. A flashback split right down the middle between volumes seems to be death for flashback characters.
Too much of a spoiler for the volume the flashback starts in; overshadowed by resumed present day events in the one where it ends.
-
"Character X is too much of a spoiler to be featured on the volume cover" seems like an empty point when Gear 5 was fully revealed in the ninth of eleven chapters of volume 103.
-
But it’s true that when a flashback is split into two volumes there is never a cover fully dedicated to it, like Law’s and Bonney’s flashbacks.
-
@Coookie You know what, you're right. And I'm usually the first to push back against a character design alone being a counter as a spoiler (you need the context!). Maybe it would be more accurate to say that if a volume shares flashback and present day material past a certain ratio, the present always seems to overshadow the past.
-
I liked the first design better (the one with Saturn-spider in the back, kid Bonney crying, and Kuma running/stumbling as in the flashback).
-
I mean, this cover is 100% flashback content besides Luffy, it's just the latest part of a very long flashback and everyone present just so happens to also be relevant in the present.
It's also a weird kind of flashback because Kuma is both the protagonist and also the tragic parental figure that 'dies' at the end. He is the Cora-san here, but we're seeing his POV.
Anyways I think the reason Cora didn't make it was probably just Oda realizing it was time for the hero vs villain dual covers.
-
@Sengokusgoat Oh yeah! I was so busy missing Ginny in the cover that it escaped me that it is 100% a flashback cover. Sure, Luffy is present, but he usually is in those too.
Too bad we’ll probably never have a full 7 Punks cover. Oh well…
-
I think that's why Oda gave us that Stella & Satellites color spread. He realized it'll never happen on a volume cover. That's yet another reason I wish we had gotten to see more of the labophase battle. If the intermission stuff had been pushed a volume, we would've had a Stella + Satellites cover for vol. 107. But alas, it was not to be.
Same reason Oda did the Beast Pirates color spread when he realized the vol. 99 - 101 covers would prevent the typical heroes v. villains format.
As for this cover, I like it a lot! I think it's the best representation of Kuma's character that he's smiling despite his backstory being so tragic. Even as far as Nika covers go, I like the scene of Kizaru, Sentomaru, and Stella joining in the dance. Kizaru's participation is perhaps the most significant. And I'll second that it's nice to see this version of Stussy on the cover.
I'm glad Oda chose to save Saturn for vol. 110. I think it's most fitting that all Five Elders first appear together on a volume cover. Starfall should be in vol. 109, so their demon forms can all appear together on the next cover.
-
This isn't anything crazy. Just a nice wholesome cover. With how dark the flashback was, this captures the light in it.
The manga did ok, but the anime really emphasized what Nika symbolized when most in the raid lost hope and then Luffy just provides relief to break the tension by grabbing Kaido in that whacky manner.
This cover does the same. Kuma's whole flashback is filled with optimism being crush with little moments of relief. This cover at least doesn't fall prey to that.
-
I still prefer my original idea but I am glad the cover got to be Kuma focused. He deserves it. I could've done without Gear 5 Luffy though. I know why he's there but it feels a tad out of place.
-
I agree with the sentiment that Luffy could've just been a silhouette on this cover, fitting Kuma's perspective of Nika.
-
@Chams-0 It's interesting how it definitely is a flashback cover (funnily, the scene of everyone dancing in the lab was actually in the last volume) but it doesn't feel like one. Maybe it's because most of the major characters are already adults in the flashback and haven't really changed visually between it and the present.
-
Final cover:
Title of "On Your Side" and chapters 1101 to 1110 confirmed!
-
Imagine going back in time to the Sabaody era and showing this cover to a reader from that time, I'm sure it would be a great shock to see the three Straw Hats' terrors: Sentomaru, Kizaru and Kuma dancing happily on a cute volume cover. LOL
-
That cover kills my heart
-
Personally, I wish it was titled 'Dear Bonney' instead of 'On Your Side'. There's already 'Ever At Your Side' as the title of volume 74 on Dressrosa.
That said, perfect cover.
Stussy will be completely covered by the large '109' on the English version from Viz though...
-
So the volume is ending on Starfall as expected. Just given the pacing over everything, I suspect Volume 110 will be the final full one for Egghead (with the actual finale being in 111). I'm gonna predict its the five elders in their beast forms with the Vegapunk TV in the background and G5 Luffy up front facing them (maybe with Dory and Broggy next to him).
-
lol, got most of my prediction wrong, but got it right that it would be FB focused!!!
Really liking the warm pink in this one, just wish we had Revolutionary Kuma with bright orange colors and initially intended as well. Overall it's a nice, heart-warming color for
a cover.Next one must have the Gorosei up front, maybe with the giants behind them. Now we wait for SBS spoilers...probably coming up next week.
-
Kuma appears in Volume 109 spine!!

One Piece Volume 109 SBS informations!! Thanks to @pewpiece.
Question: In Chapter 1100, the Warlord that Ace beat which was being talked about by Kuma and St. Saturn, what was that person like?
Oda: He looks like this. His name is "Hanafuda". His hobby is collecting Ancient Zoan Devil Fruits. On what he's scheming behind this remains unknown up to now. His height is 514 cm. His other name is "King of Lizards"
Question: Please tell us the name and rank of Fujitora's sword.
Oda: It's called the "やくざ火線" (Yakuza Kasen - Yakuza Firing Line). It's a "shikomizue" (swordstick, cane sword) and its one of the Supreme Grade Blades. Its a meito (named blade) made by Fugetsu Kisaburou from Wano Country.

My first thought is that this guy may be Ulti and Page One's father who Kaido respected. His name is even from a card game, and he could be Kaido's source of ancient zoans. However, it doesn't fit completely because I think Ulti and Page One were orphaned as children, but when this guy was defeated (4 years ago) they were late teens (Ulti was 18-years old then, and P1 was 16-years old).
The connection to Kaido is probably real, though.
-
Oh yeah that guy is definitely Ulti and Pay Pay's father. Damn. Can Hanafuda be read in any way that implies an animal theme? Though I guess Oda wants all the Warlords from the start of the series to be the only ones with animal names (except for Weevil).
Also, damn at that casual confirmation of Fujitora having one of the 12 strongest swords in the world. Saw a lot of people assuming that he would have one of the 21 at best, that's a nice surprise.
-
That is a banger of a design to drop in a throwaway bit of SBS lore. Wonder if he was planned to be more prominent at some point, or may yet be in the future, or if it was just one of those flash of inspiration things.
Love how quick you guys were to draw the Kaido connection. Come back next SBS to see if Oda confirms the theory!
-
@Deicide I didn't recall Oda confirming that their father had died in an SBS. Still, for such a minor background character (at least for now) I think Oda can retcon that fact and just say that their father faked his death or something like that.
I think the most important fact is that this dismisses the possibility of this guy being The Man Marked by Flames. I doubt Oda would reveal such a character in an SBS, even though him being defeated by a Fire DF user made things fall into place.
I'm still happy that we got to see this guy. Also, I just realized: if this guy had an Ancient Zoan, that means that the Warlords luffy has defeated have had Logia and Paramecia powers while Ace defeated a Zoan. No overlap. Neat!
-
I guess this confirms Shiki is not appearing in the main manga? (At least in the present?)

Next movie villain? We should get a movie announcement this year, right?

Luffy Mom theories dying out again (Oda wouldn't reveal her in a SBS), was fun while it lasted though.
This SBS really feels like Oda going: "ahhh shit these last chapters are dragging it out, plus fewer pages than usual for consecutive chapters... better give them some new juicy info even if it's just some minor stuff"
