Tried it last week just because the thumbnail caught my eye, but I went in not because I was hoping to like it but because I wanted to check the obvious new terrible generic battle shonen that will be canceled in less than 20 chapters. So I was just wanting to revel in that weird pleasure of watching a train wreck.
Turned out it was surprisingly good! Nice art, very good aesthetics (I know I want to see a dozen other spreads with those fishes), likeable characters, even the way it introduces the plot elements feels fresh.
Somehow this turned into an online meme already. The series itself is average so far, but I like the idea of a katana with 3 goldfish-based powers. And it flows a bit better than the usual axebait series we got these past few batches.
How did this become such a big hit so fast? Am I missing something?
@Shiebs The power of memes.
I think this series will do really well. What got me good was the food sequence and a good humor/slice of life side to a series is always an indicator of how good a series will be. Both the action scenes and art has been top notch so this was the one thing that wasn't quite there yet. And now it is.
Yeah, I picked the first chapter up because I was fooled by some random comment, lol. Got no choice but to keep reading now.
Is it me or was the translation a little off in chapter 4? During fight with daruma dude, especially when Chihiro describes red fish ability.
Well chapter 9 is out and I must say, I'm liking this flick.
Chapter 11. This shit isn't bad at all!
Kinda hoping it hits off. The world is interesting enough, and there are hints it might be built in a greater detail. It's like gangster Naruto, basically.
I've been enjoying it so far.
What they're doing to Char is pretty brutal :(
I'm still following it, but it's not doing well on the weekly JUMP ToC.
Actually, all the three new titles are usually on the bottom 5. So I wouldn't be surprised if all three get cancelled around chapter 30.
If one of them survive, though, it should be Kagurabachi, as it is consistently ranking (slightly) higher than MamaYuyu and Two on Ice.
I gave MamaYuyu a try and it had a really good start (even better than Kagurabachi), but once the prologue was over it was straight to Generic Land and I eventually stopped checking on it.
Oh, I haven't been watching the ToC for a while... it's not doing well? I wonder if its popularity overseas would be enough to influence things? A while ago there was a flurry of sensational headlines about threatening to dethrone One Piece like some kind of boxing match which admittedly made me check out the first chapters.
Are they ending it ? The comments in this thread had me check the series and it's somewhat interesting, but the latest chapter feels like events are speeding up all of a sudden and could be headed towards a final duel.
Unless the current antagonist is but a stepping stone and the meaty chunks have yet to come.
@Seafarer33 how bout now?
I'm liking the story even more.
I'm enjoying it. I just want him to get his sword back, because deadly goldfish are awesome.
Yeah, that's a good time to bump the thread. The development for Hakuri was great and the art continue.
This author and Sakamoto's have some amazing skills to portray actions scenes (paneling, point of view change, dynamic angles).
The story isn't the deepest thing created but it's fine enough to make for a really enjoyable weekly read.
I think it's popular seem good enough for it to survive for a while. Hopefully until an anime adaptation because it has huge sale bump potential.
Yay, goldfish!

I know it's family, but I don't see why an auction house matters so much:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1021567
And Chihiro got fish, the other got . . . insects. Ew.
Nobody wants to be the incompetent guy that ended the long standing tradition. But since Kyora is given this much exposition, I feel like Hakuri will put his mind at ease regarding the survival of the Rakuzaichi by the end of this arc. He's the heir that possesses the ability to keep the auction house alive, after all. Perhaps in a more ethical form.
The insect/insect-adjacent theme for the shinuchi is neat.
This would be an awesome scene in an anime:

Really liked this manga. Glad to see it has traction because it clearly has a ton of potential yet.
Hakuri's storyline was fantastic, as was the prior arc.
I'm guessing Hakuri takes after his mom:

Small plot twist!

@Satsuki Makes a lot of sense that he'd try to join them because plotting a lone wolf story is bound to get harder and harder as it goes.
This series has been really good so far and is gaining strength.
It's gettin' more and more interesting:

why did the little girl only get one short panel im sad
They certainly don't waste time:

I wonder if we'll eventually get a little more downtime between arcs or will the author continue to just plow right thru the story. Not to say i don't appreciate the story chugging full steam ahead so early on (i really like the pace rn), but i do wonder if i'll feel the same way a couple arcs from now if the story continually refuses to apply the brakes here and there.
Glad to see the baddies being proactive.
With the newest arc's name, I guess not all of them will survive.
Based on designs, I'd say that the old sword bearer on the left of the color page has the biggest death flag.
Uruha is pretty fun so far. But without allowing him to use his enchanted blade, I don't see much room for him to become a regular character like Hakuri.
Well, we'll just have to see if he gets the blade back or not.
The bandana dude is a traitor!
Stealing a little Daredevil here:

Seriously though, when the wielder is that good, can we just see them fight with their magic sword instead of a boring one?
I see a death flag on Samura but I hope if it happens it's not soon and we get a few arcs to enjoy him.
Interesting art this time.

ngl i had a hard time making out what was happening in that dark doublespread (more specifically the big middle panel)
looks cool, but i wish i could see more. i can make out a sword, two arms and the bad guy's head. i assume chihiro's waving his sword around hacking everyone and everything to pieces (?)
a lot of other cool panels this chapter too.
That explains the doublespread from last week.

But I'm also pretty sure that's not how friendship works.
The first chapters felt really edgy to me just for the sake of sticking out.
But I came around to it and I do love the art and the cast.
I could have sworn the manga would have gotten an early end.
Well, it appears to have been popular enough for Shueisha to allow it to keep going.
The author has managed to keep plot, character introductions, character interactions and action sequences consistently interesting. It's now one of the 3 manga I follow weekly, along with OP and Kingdom.
So, I guess all of Hishaku can regenerate limbs, and not just Yura?
Otherwise Hiruhiko won't be much of a swordsman.
Woo! More sword magic!

While badass, getting his sword back doesn't eliminate the death flag I see on him.
The way this manga is constructed (plotwise and the violence of the fights), I feel that it has to kill characters and that includes the MC's allies.
At least, we get to see his enchanted sword in action before that and it was awesome.
Holy shit. I didn't see that twist coming. I was 100% expecting Uruha to survive and Samura to die.
If there's not another twist and Uruha somehow was not killed, I will need some explanation because Samura's actions and Hishaku attacking the temple don't make sense if Samura is an active ally of Hishaku.
When did that kid get a sword?
Well, that went south pretty quick.

Gosh, I love that series and the characters. The good guy turning into a "bad" guy, is a cool twist.
This makes me want to know what happened during the war. I guess we will learn that eventually, right?
