Sakamoto Days

That it's TMS? I also wasn't expecting Sugita's voice (wish Gintama kept running to do a gag for this) but I dig it.
-
I had this nagging feeling that this series will never reach the potential it should reach and this kind of affirms it.
What a lackluster finale to the arc. -
I dunno about that. That fight with the old man was pretty RAW and now the main villain can fight like that.
-
@zeltrax225 I don't know if we had similar expectations, personnaly I miss comic-relief Sakamoto.
Don't get me wrong : I enjoy the the assassin battles; but it's the contrast with the fatty storekeeper wielding a pencil, mop or a bag of chips that really made them shine.
The last time we got something truly noteworthy was when his daughter "healed" deerhead. Ever since, it has mostly been flashy shonen stuff. Done well, but doesn't stand out from the crowd as much as it used to.Aside from this, the way everything wraps up so suddenly is truly messy. No consequences whatsoever to the museum attck when it should be all over the news, we just went under cover and slept for a week. Meh. I don't give a damn about the split-personnality guy, so I would have been perfectly fine with him cleaved from head to toe, everyone made peace with the JAA and we moved on to a new antagonist and new arc.

It's pretty much a Shonen staple that when things get more and more serious, it tends to devolve into standard Shonen fare. It was already a bad sign that Lu was introduced as a character and then got left behind because the author does not seem to have any plans for her. She just seems to exist because it led to the existence of Wutang who is basically the group's informant.

The thing with Sakamoto Days is that it is a goldmine of potential.
The character designs are actually really well done. If the anime is done well, I can see plenty of characters blowing up.
There's nothing to be said about the action because the panelling, dynamism and fight scenes (along with insane camera angles) trumps every single series in the magazine. As an artist, I can only dream of reaching that degree of proficiency with perspective.A handful of key characters have interesting personalities too so its not just "good character design".
The problem then, is the overarching plot is just...not that interesting. And the plot of each arc feels like a stepping stone to a greater arc but then the greater arc never comes so now the arc that you are looking forward to becomes another stepping stone to another great arc and when you reach there, it becomes the stepping stone to another great arc and the cycle repeats.
It might be editorial too because the girl from the starting chapters from china? I think. Has been casted aside. I liked her (not remembering her name is just me, I don't remember any names).
And then we get a new influx of characters (from the school arc) that we're supposed to care about but because they are so new and haven't done much, there's really nothing to be invested in. They are fun, sure, but other than that, there's really nothing going for them that you can be invested in.Too many moving pieces for what is essentially a, if you break it down, really simple plot. There's room to address the morality of the assasination job itself and the rectifications of taking lives but there's no agency to cover that at all so you can't even find a theme to be invested in.
Sakamoto, who retired because he wanted a simple life away from blood and wants to protect his normalcy is now doing things that Sakamoto who has not retired will do. His wife is cast aside, his simple life is a forgotten afterthought and he's pretty much an assassin like he used to be and the entire plot, instead of him fighting for the simplicity and peace of his daily life, is now focused on this other thing with this other dude/female that is so narratively far away from what is important and makes up Sakamoto's character.
The themes are all over the place. He should be the Sakata Gintoki of this generation but you don't get that at all. I mean, the backstory is the same as Gintoki's that I'm almost sure the author is a fan of the series.
@Seafarer33 I don't have much to add except that yeah, the comedy has been lacking so far and has instead turned into what falls under standard comedy for shounen (one liner, character gags, etc).

The latest chapter just feels rushed.
-
A short live action on youtube to celebrate the 18th volume!
-
This guy looks like the fat trainer old dude from Slam Dunk.
-
Loved it. And yeah he does look like the coach lol
-
the actions scenes are just sooo good, the anime has to step up to honor it
-
I've been trying to binge this series here and there now that it's getting an anime. I recently finished the jcc school arc.
The action scenes are fantastic.
My favorite is Shin by far.
Fav arc is the jcc exams.
Everything is fine and dandy for the most part. can't say it's one of my favorites but it's been a decent read. I feel like i'm beginning to see some patterns but i'll wait another arc or two just to see if they continue. -
I sure hope target-face plans to do literally anything other than trying to deescalate and exclaim "Shin!" this whole time. He entered a game-of-death style den of killers and yet keeps acting surprise everytime they have to fight.
Or more accurately, every time Shin has to fight and he stands around not contributing and not developing.
Prison warden is fun!
-
Guess that's a responding "Nope!" -_-
-
go shin go! he was so cool this chapter. wondering if and when we see some repercussions to his mind controlling or at least some better defined limits.
-
man, the girl reminds me a LOT of HxH's prophet it's not even subtle.
-
The situation is interesting, I have to say. Let's see how Shin gets himself out of this mess.
-
Shin...not your best plan. we all know it's going to backfire at somepoint.

@QueenTangerine3
On Second thought he went to master his esp, but gonna leave a master at persuasion.
