Chapter 895: Pirate Luffy vs. Sweet Commander Katakuri
-
Snake-man is nothing X-rated, confirmed.
-
A rubber snake vs. a mochi donut is ridiculously fantastic, and I'm excited to see the outcome!
-
THAT. WAS. GREAT.
-
Katakuri going full beast mode is one of the coolest single character panels I've seen in awhile.
-
I feel like luffy’s super long arms make it easier to cut them off- careful luffy!
-
A lot is going to be made about the demon Katakuri panel but Luffy’s smile after coming up from the hole unnerved me more. Maybe it’s because I watched Devilman Crybaby like a month ago but both Luffy and Katakuri looked like Go Nagai monsters in this chapter.
-
Luffy's arm can get get pretty damn long.
Best moment for me is Dogtooth turning into a doughnut.

Its pretty clear WCI not ending by 900 like some people speculated.

So yeah I’m sorry. I’m a hype man usually. But this new form hasn’t shown us anything different from Boundman almost at all. I would have thought the showcasing would be better. Hey look that thing Boundman does this also does. But the Good part of the Haki rubber doesn’t work in this form. And he’s still blocking most of your super fast shots. Hopefully it gets more unique after this awful intro.
-
That was cool! Luffy is full Deoxy's now!
Before people come in complaining about everything I'd like to point out the funny faces that were made during the fight. When have we seen a funny face trade off like that against a full on enemy? Katakuri is showing more signs as an ally after this.
Seeing Python against Doflamingo was cool but seeing all these arms at once is something else all together. Visually it is stunning to me! I absolutely love it!
-
Snakeman is ugly lol. Like I get the inspiration, but it's nightmare luffy tier. Katakuri is a boss doing literal donuts like sanic. God I want him to win, he's way too cool to lose.
-
Too cool to lose? What the fuck does that even mean? How can someone be too cool to lose? The ones that have lost in the past are uncool?
-

So cool that you cheer for his victory rather than the main character.
-

Wtf? I like and enjoy Katakuri, I even use his name has one of my passwords at work but why the fuck will I want him to win? That doesn't make any sense.
-
Awesome chapter, can't wait for the next one!
-
Awesome chapter, can't wait for the next one!
Me thinks it will be Luffy and Katakuri sharing donuts while Luffy refers to him has oniisan.
-
meh chapter and meh 'new form' for me.
bound man already does all this stuff and the increase in speed isn't really justified by anything other than 'it does'.
tankman at least made sense because the haki was located in different parts of the body, but here it's pretty much the same as usual…also, luffy is still getting hit a bazillion more times than katakuri, yet I'm supposed to believe that this last attack is gonna be the decisive one.
also, what's up with the whole 'i' m saying whatever it's on my mind' stuff?
-
His tracking arms are so cool! I know 4th did it, but this form is like, ALL about it! I think this Snake stuff is actually pretty great!
-
Best of both worlds these past two weeks. Exposition fest last chapter, and now some no-distractions, no-holds-barred fighting in this one. I don't know when was the last time I've seen such impactful blows being traded. Luffy vs. Lucci, maybe?
Snakeman was pretty much what I expected, and I didn't have any significant hype for it, so I enjoyed it. I would like to see more distinctions made between it and Boundman in the future; if I had to wager anything I'd bet that Snakeman doesn't deliver as much attack power and Luffy is more vulnerable in this form. I hope Luffy uses Tankman and Snakeman more in Wano before he displays any more Gear Fourth forms.
Katakuri is who really stole the show here. That donut roll, the flame-shaped Haki, that goddamned expression he made after slamming Luffy into the ground, THAT was what made the fight so impactful. So yeah, seems like this is the end. I had worried we might not get enough of a show after Luffy finally managed to improve his Observation Haki, but the one we got here was hella fun. Hopefully this won't be the last we see of Katakuri old chap. He deserves to pig out on an entire food island once he gets out, pride and standing be damned (well, they pretty much already are at this point, so why not take advantage?)
-
While I still think we've got a few more chapters to go, it looks like the main fight will end way before all of the other conflicts. I don't think that has ever happened before. The closest I can remember is Punk Hazard, where the final attack against Caesar happened at 691-692, and then Usopp and Nami captured Buffalo/Baby 5 at 695. And I can't imagine all of this Sanji/Germa/Big Mom stuff finishing that quickly.
-
"sanji would fight katakuri to redeem himself! "
Would love to see the face of those guys who said that after they saw the performance from katakuri -

You're right, each of boundman attacks sent Katakuri flying.
-

well when it gained enough speed the snake man attack did the same
but, yes, snakeman seem to be faster but has less power..even if it doesn't make any sense for luffy to be faster and less powerful in this form.
-
"sanji would fight katakuri to redeem himself! "
Would love to see the face of those guys who said that after they saw the performance from katakurilol, I believe it's same group that said Luffy will fight BM. For me, the monster trio is now Luffy, Zoro and Jimbe. Sanji is second tier along with franky.

Perhaps it's referring to when luffy said i'm hungry, it's basically what Kata wanted to say as well.
Ayo maju maju, ayo maju maju. ayo maju majuuuu

Now that I've read the chapter more, it seems like there'll probably be three forms of Gear Fourth for the time being: Snakeman, which may have the best offense? but little to no defense, Tankman which is focused on defense, and Boundman which is the mix of the two.

looks more like
boundman= power
snakeman= speed
tankman = defenseproblem is, while it makes sense the difference between boundman and tankman just by looking at where all the haki goes (the stomach), it makes very little sense for snakeman to be so significantly faster than boundman and also to pack less of a punch compared to it since luffy's arms and legs have still haki so the power of the attacks should be the same since g4's power comes from the increased tensile strenght of hakized rubber

But Boundmans arms are bigger..
-
Luffy is hungry. What will happen when he's out of there and he smells the wedding cake…
-
idk guys i think katakuri is gonna be the victor
-
But Boundmans arms are bigger..
not really that much..and again, gear 4's power comes from tensile strenght, not muscle fibers, so it doesn't really change anything if he is more or less muscular…in fact all those muscles in the boundman form are just kind of an illusion since they are just full of air, there's no real increase in muscle mass.

Boundman also features defensive capabilities too, since Luffy was able to bounce off any impact he made and Doflamingo's attacks bounced off of him, whereas when he was using Snakeman he took impact normally. So it feels more like a combination of offense and defense, with Snakeman and Tankman being on the ends of the spectrum.
-
Gotta love Katakuri channeling his inner Nosferatu Zodd

yeah boundman has more defense but still seems to be more powerful than snakeman..only one attack from snakeman sent katakuri flying and was after gaining speed after many "turns",while normal attacks from boundman seemed to have more of an effect.

After reading the chapter how can someone say is not going to be a draw? Every panel is a mirror. Katakuri is doing what Luffy does constantly. I think Sanji is the key here and is the one who is going to save Luffy from the Mirror world. Because you know what is the difference between Luffy and Katakuri? Luffy has FRIENDS! Katakuri can have the same power than Luffy, but you know what? he is alone. He has no one because everyone in the family thinks he is perfect and Katakuri will realize that when Sanji comes to save him. But i also think Luffy will ask Sanji to take him out of the mirror world as an act of kindness. On the other side the strawhats knows that Luffy is imperfect, but he is the best capitain they can have. That's the point in this arc.

Yea that's why King Kong Gun filled with air split the island in two.

that's a remnant of gear 3, which also doesn't make any sense
in fact oda seems to go back and forth in terms of gear forms
gear 2: makes sense
gear 3: doesn't make any sense
gear 4: makes sense
gear 4 snakeman: doesn't make any sensein-between there's the tankman form that we don't know how much we will see it (since there's the whole being superfat thing) that kind of made sense.
-

Yeah, I'm not sure how far Snakeman's offensive superiority extends in terms of power. Boundman seems like it wouldn't have worked as well because Katakuri would have been able to dodge the attacks more easily, but if Luffy had managed to use his Haki to successfully get a blow in would it be more powerful than King Cobra?
-
(…) Because you know what is the difference between Luffy and Katakuri? Luffy has FRIENDS! (...)
Katakuri has SIBLINGS! Approx. 8-10 times more siblings than Luffy has friends on Tottoland (incl. Bege and Chiffon).
-
There were just so many beautiful things in this chapter like the first panel on this page;
Katakuri dodging like that was absolutely insane
!
Katakuri blocking the punch by lifting his leg up;
!
Katakuri's dodge on first top and bottom pannel;
!
Bottom left panel dissolve;
!
I really loved the fight choreography

Why doesn't gear 3 makes sense?
Gear 4 isn't boundman only. Snakeman makes sense too.Tankman makes sense as it's just a fusen with haki. It also wasn't called full version. Meaning there aren't different size versions, the kanji literally said full stomach version (満腹)Manpuku because he literally was full to the point of bursting with cookies. The version was the gag but the form wasn't.

This chapter showcases how Oda can still draw dynamic action with unique framing and pretty good -panel to panel- pacing, some people were claiming he lost his touch for action, but this chapter proves otherwise. It's also surprising how good the choreography here is, especially considering the location which despite being cool is still "empty."
Praising aside, although Luffy's personality change is slick, I currently fail to see why it happened.
Leaving the fight on a cliffhanger is so Oda-like, but was never done for Luffy's fights, since you know, these cliffhangers almost always end up with a twist, which is rarely the case with our protagonist's main fights. So I'm gonna throw a little prediction here, either Luffy didn't win, which I don't see, or the fight didn't actually end here.problem is, while it makes sense the difference between boundman and tankman just by looking at where all the haki goes (the stomach), it makes very little sense for snakeman to be so significantly faster than boundman and also to pack less of a punch compared to it since luffy's arms and legs have still haki so the power of the attacks should be the same since g4's power comes from the increased tensile strenght of hakized rubber
Luffy doesn't blow himself as much here, which makes the retraction (don't know if I'm using the right wording here) of the arm pack less punch. At least that's how I interpreted it.
-
Cool chapter, I really liked the climax of the battle.
I hope Katakuri wins, because he is awesome. :) -

Kat at least had to block stuff because it was coming at him so fast from so many directions.
Even if he did dodge the last part and hit luffyMamba black is gatling that can change direction which is rather fun and should great to see in animation form
-
I'm pretty sure that the fight hasn't ended yet.
-
GO LUFFY GOOOOOOO!!!
Though our hero appears to have reached his limit, Katakuri probably has a some more stamina to spare. It will take a ridiculously strong attack to end him with the one or two shot you have left Luffy.

because the bone is full of air, it's an increase in size, not mass, so his attacks shouldn't be any stronger..if anything they should be weaker because the area of impact is now larger..the smaller the surface the more the force is concentrated in a single point.
at the same way snakeman doesn't make sense because gear 4 isn't actually heavier than luffy since it's just full of air, so a smaller size doesn't mean an actual decrease in weight.
and yes, i know,i'm arguing real physics in a manga..but since gear 4 actually made sense (basically normal luffy is a rubber band, gear 4 luffy is one of those bouncy rubber balls
i hoped oda would have kept the trend going.@Brainyz:

but the arm seems as inflated as boundman though, at least compared to the size of his hand

Page 14 was also nice. After exchanging powerful blows, Kata seems to spit blood, but still manages to land on his feet, whereas Luffy fully crashes into a wall.
King Cobra could be not a Punch, but Luffy trying to grab Kata's head. Maybe we'll see Luffy's Version of a diced mochi next chapter. The Hand isn't shaped like a fist anymore on that last page. It Looks half-opened. -
