I don't know why I'm somehow not excited for this. This is going to be the most hilarious thing ever. It's already ripe with forum memes and gifs, I can almost taste it.
One Piece celebrates its 20th Anniversary in 2017
-
-
this is gonna be a disaster
-
Oh it's real.
AP Forums drinking night basically confirmed right
-
Has stretching ever been portrayed well in live action?
-
To be fair this show could just get stuck in development hell and never come out or get canned while in productions.
-
@Count:
I never asked for this.
I asked NOT for this.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Damnit, is my fault, I asked not a live action movie, leaving the monkey paw that is internet to say "you didn't say anything about a series"!
-
Hopefully if this is hollywood they stay true to the nationalities of the characters like cast a brazilian luffy, japanese zoro, canadian nami, a french sanji, an african usopp(oh the disaster of looking for a live action usopp nose), russian robin and the only american should be franky
-
Nami is Sweedish not canadian, chopper is.

ONE PIECE 20th Anniversary website opens today.

Oda's comment about live-adaptation [hide]http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DFOWQsAVYAA1gv7.jpg
[/hide]Oda says to the live-adaptation staffs, "Do not betray ONE PIECE fans who have been supporting us for 20 years." He also says, "Some people may be worried about this project, but don't miss it!"Live-adaptation of OP has been brought up many times. Oda agreed to the idea 3 years ago.
Marty Adelstein in Tomorrow Studios made a comment:
I've been enjoying ONE PIECE for 20 years. This live-adaptation project will require the largest amount of money in TV series history. It's well-deserved considering people around the world pay attention to ONE PIECE.More money than, let's say, Game of Thrones?
I highly doubt that unless Shueisha, Toei and Tomorrow Studios COMBINED foot the bill.
-

Netflix just paid 130 million dollars for 10 episodes of a historic drama.
TV, for quite some time now, can not be called "small screen" anymore
-
They are going to take the "nationalities" SBS out of context.
There are very little indications of the actual ethnicity of one piece characters. They are "japaneseish" besides fishmen and minks.
Historically the blues seem to be more uniform, like east blue being east Asian (but yassop seeming foreign), north blue being European , and I don't remember what was that we arrived for the rest. With each of the grand line isles being their own thing because their isolated nature.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Whenever you say "Luffy is Brazilian" you should think why oda did that, the current answer is "because meat".
Besides, if going for realism, the strawhats receive a dangerous amount of sunlight, they should be tan as fuck.
-
To be honest, I'm actually looking forward for this and hoped that they stay close to the original story and likes to see how this is done

it's really only a matter of money, effort and talent
point 1: on the money part, they are saying it's one of the "costlier" TV series ever,we will see if it's true
point 2: on the effort part, the producer said he is a onepiece fan..we don't know if it's true, but oda too seem to be involved,if he is,we can at least hope that they are gonna put some effort into it…especially if point 1 is true.
point 3: on the talent part… prison break was decent for the part i saw of it, but i have no idea how good this "tomorrow studios" is.all i can say is that, back in 2008, even the marvel cinematic universe sounded like a really dumb idea...sure, a series of film that are all in continuity with each other like comic books, and where a norse god interacts with a big green monster and a superpowered soldier that comes directly from ww2..no way it will work, too wacky, too much diversity of tones...

Good or not is not the issue since they have not really put out anything yet.
They target pretty interesting projects. Live action Cowboy Bebop, adaptation of the novel "Let the right one in", adaptation of Snowpiercer…So choice-wise, it seems promising but nothing beyond that
And the movies suck for the most part. Being successful does not make them good.
-
Best news ever, I wanted this live action. So it will be like dragonball big screen movie or more like tv series black sails like?
-
What it will come down to is pretty simple: who the showrunner is going to be. A producer just funds the project but the showrunner will be responsible for overseeing the development of the story, tone, look, feel, etc.
Basically, if somehow a name like Bryan Fuller gets on board with this, it would be incredible.
There are also going to be a lot of things to consider, challenges to face when it comes to adapting One Piece for western audiences. For starters, this will be aimed at adult audiences, 18-49 for sure. That means in many ways the tone of the series will have to grow up a bit in terms of its sense of humor. One can only hope they'd take a page out of Marvel's book here in terms of tone. Second there will almost certainly be no more than 13 eps per season and that means the story will have to be heavily adapted. They wont just adapt 4 or 5 chapters an episode and call it a day. Game of Thrones is a good comparison here, if only because the liberal and somewhat loose adaptation treatment GoT got will be best case scenario. Except arcs to be dropped skipped redesigned trimmed down added. Some characters will be merged together story wise or will be redesigned visually and narratively.
Giving us an adult One Piece series and not giving us Nami's tattoo stab will be criminal.
-
Not sure if I want this but if it's done in Hollywood then that means work! American Hollywood right?! Hopefully I can get on this!

It's 22th July in Japan. Happy 20th Anniversary One Piece!!! For me, the best Manga of all time!!!

Another special video for One Piece 20th Anniversary.
-
Wait, so the big announcement was the Live Action series?
-
Redon is it translated ? Or a translated copy?!
-
One notable thing about the magazine, is that it confirms Trebol's DF is Paramecia :) Though it lists Tamago's DF as unknown.

Thats not true. Oda stated that he specifically chose those places based on their images. Most other One Piece characters are definitely not intended to be japanese either since Oda has based many countries/characters around real life people/places. The people of Skypiea are clearly Native American based, for example. Dressrosa is Spain, Wano is Japan, Alabasta is Egypt etc.

I don't understand the automatic negativity. Not everything is Dragon ball evolution. Yes, many anime adaptations have been trash, but fictional universes can and have been adapted well. You just need the right people in charge of it. Marvel does it well usually.

Oda drew that piece to celebrate the One Piece kabuki play which took place last year in Japan. Here's a trailer of the kabuki play :
Edit : He also drew the marineford poster to celebrate that play. You can google it.

I heard that tokyo ghoul live action movie was perfectly executed. So let's give this one a chance.

I saw the video when you published it on YouTube. And I totally understand what's your point.
My point is true anniversary was when 100% japanese readers could buy Weekly Shonen Jump and read One Piece chapter 1.
Jump was available, without doubt, on the 19th July in parts of urban Japan? Sure, your sources are the best. Maybe it was available even the 18th July in some stores, who knows.
100% of japanese readers could buy Jump on the 19th July? No.
That's why for me One Piece Anniversary is the 22th July
You are right Redon. July 22nd (not 22th ) has been OFFICIALLY set as "ONE PIECE DAY".!!!!
https://sp.shonenjump.com/j/op-20th-anniv/article/page_16.htmlHere's the quote:
"20年前に『ONE PIECE』の連載が開始された7月22日が、日本記念日協会により「ONE PIECEの日」として制定! 『ONE PIECE』連載20周年記念発表会の会場で、その証となる登録証が週刊少年ジャンプの中野博之編集長に授与されました。会場レポートは後ほどこのサイトで公開予定です!" -
22nd has and always will be the official anniversary ^0^
No one, not even myself has suggested otherwise.
There's a big difference between the tatemae and honne of that date.
But, like last week, I can't blame you for trying!

By the way, here is my translation for editor's impressive comment about Oda yesterday.
"Junior high school students 20 years ago have already become adults. They may be married and have children.
All the while, Oda-sensei has been drawing ONE PIECE day after day to deliver an adventure and excitement to us.
I'd like to show respect to him from the bottom of my heart.(Oda tells his editor not to call him "Oda-sensei" so that they can talk friendly, but editor decides to call him "Oda-sensei" just for today/yesterday to show respect.)

I think, that the Live Action Series announcment was this "huge annoucnment". Or Toei will announce a "Kai"-Version of One Piece in the form of "Dragonball Z Kai".

Novel Ace chapter 2 cover by Kinu Nishimura (he's one of Capcom's main designers).

I heard the magazine V Jump's newest issue was going to contain a page on the Big Mom Pirates. Anyone have a copy?
-
You can hope as much as you want, but OP will never work as a live action movie/tv show…ESPECIALLY not as a tv show with a standard non got tv budget.
