Pokemon Ultra S&M - Let's Minecraft Pikachu and Eevee Quest

With the introduction of two completely new species they can shove us another 30 if they want.
30 new Ultra Beasts? That would be interesting.
-
Plus the Alolan variants, as these do not disrupt the national dex.
-
New poster artwork for Ultra Sun/Moon featuring obscured new villains…?
! Guzma and Lusamine better not be wholly replaced by them though. They were the best main antagonists the games have had.
-
Lillie is holding a pokeball.
Ok, now I'm truly hyped.
-
Lillie actually doing something n the game would definitely be a shocking turn of events
-
Its also her second more assertive haircut.

I think that's Wicke above Primarina.

Those guys above do not even look human, not with those outfits.

Someone has to get Nebbie in that fucking bag.
-
A better view of the new supposed villains.
!
Those outfits, tho.

THIS. They need to be back. But I can't believe they'd leave them out.
-

Those outfits, tho.
Wait…
! They look like fallers, coming out of the ultra wormhole. Also, those outfits have a lot of weird stripes, like another team…
-
Okay I may get this now, though my mind telling me wait to see what changes there are.
-

I'd be absolutely shocked if they didn't do something with her considering she's essentially Pokemon's Lucina at the moment.

! Team Ultra Galactic?
-
! Team Ultra Galactic?
! Maybe they come from an alternate reality where Team Galactic successfully remade their universe into the Ultra Wormhole.

I'm copypasting this from Serebii, because I find it a very well written statement regarding the games, and a jab to all those who are complaining for the 'lack of incentives to buy it' (which after the release of this new key art should be entirely mocked). Feel free to disagree if you want.
We have many new areas in Alola. That only happened in Emerald
We have two new Pokémon. That never happened.
We have new moves. That has only happened in ORAS.
We also have new features like Alola Photo Club.
We've seen many elements of new story aspects such as a focus on Necrozma (Solgaleo & Lunala were never really a story focus), change in how you meet starters and these new mysterious characters, tied with the fact that Lillie is seen with a Poké Ball. This is clearly the most enhanced version to have exist. It's silly to dismiss it by saying it has "less exciting additions". For christ's sake, they've added brand new Pokémon which they have never done before.
The irony that hits me hard is that people were clamouring for Z, and yet many of the same people are now trashing USUM for being an enhanced version.
In short: A new plot, new areas, new moves, BRAND NEW pokemon, and there's also the possibility we may get new Alolan variants. How can I not be excited for this game?
-
! Maybe they come from an alternate reality where Team Galactic successfully remade their universe into the Ultra Wormhole.
! Well. I expected to see Cyrus in the previous game or at least mentioned by Looker. Probably this game is foreshadowing Diamond and Pearl remakes.
Sinnoh confirmed? -
People wanted Z because XY had pretty clearly set up that it was going to do something with Zygarde.
What they ended up doing with it was lame, but…And, getting a third refined version of the game has typically been an overall better experience because it brings in move tutors and battle challenges and whatnot. Nothing they've shown is exciting or out of the ordinary.
What they
In short: A new plot,Everything we've seen so far indicates its the same plot, just with some late game extras, some minor extra enemies doing one extra side thing, likely in the same locations that Team Skull did before. They've been doing that level of variety since Yellow. (Heck, Yellow added Jessie, James, a trailing Pikachu and enhanced all the character sprites)
new areas,
Old games have often had new areas added. Battle frontiers and forests and whatnot. A valley of pikachus and a beach does not make for an entire new chunk of game.
new moves,
Z moves. That no one uses. Yaye.
BRAND NEW pokemon,
End game ultra beasts. 1 per game. Hard to get excited about. When last gen the expansions were giving us thirty new megas to play with, so it was revitalizing old favorites.
We've also gotten alt forms of legendaries before that were basically new critters in old games too.
and there's also the possibility we may get new Alolan variants
If they had new aloan forms they would have been advertising that instead of radio silence till right before release. They like to advertise their newest marketing gimmicks, and so far the only thing we've gotten is mid form rock wolf and they've been advertising that and just that for months. It's not their usual MO to hide surprises to be discovered. Its actually a common complaint that they reveal everything. For them to go completely the opposite direction doesn't seem quite right, and more likely indicates there's just not that much there.
How can I not be excited for this game?
Because it's sun and moon again. A little bit of post game isn't worth going through THAT game again. If they were taking the BW approach where it was actually a full blown sequel. you did the route in reverse. all the gyms changed, and the late game dramatically changed things? (BW iced half the continent) That'd be cool.
And if they were taking the usual third game route where it mixes and matches the element of both prior versions and improves upon it to be the definitive version, cool. But continuing to have it be split for no real reason? When screenshots are indicating that it IS the same story for the bulk of the game?So far it looks like very little has actually changed or been added. They haven't even announced the trial bosses are any different.
The problem here is the complete handholding no exploration iffy narrative of SM is something no one really wants to slog through again just to get some end game stuff. Because SM's handholding and forced check pointing was atrocious. Especially not just ONE YEAR later. Usually the tertiaries/sequels wait two years before coming out. This is just too close to the last one.
-
Gotta tip my hat to Robby on this one. Game freak has yet to make me want these games, which is a first. It's telling that it's already totally about the new exciting features, yet they don't come anywhere near eliciting the same sense of excitement that prior second installments have.
-
People wanted Z because XY had pretty clearly set up that it was going to do something with Zygarde.
The plot of X and Y was also extremely bland, made no sense, and could win an award for the worst told story in any RPG. If any game in the series needed a remake, it was X and Y.
-
The plot of X and Y was also extremely bland, made no sense, and could win an award for the worst told story in any RPG. If any game in the series needed a remake, it was X and Y.
It was a pokemon plot. They're ALWAYS bland and makes little to no sense, and generally boil down to "evil organization wants maguffin to unleash an ancient beast." You don't play pokemon for the plot. If there's quality in there, or a villain with real personality like N or an elite 4 bout that gets interrupted, that's a nice surprise, but it's not the draw.
(ANd there are absolutely RPGs with far worse stories. Lots of them. A couple of them with the words "final" and "fantasy" in the title.)
You play to explore and build a team and take the challenges your own way.
XY at least you could explore and find the new things without grinding in a spot for an hour at a time, and didn't have forced story checkpoints every five feet forcing you to keep going in one specific direction and only one direction.
All the games have had stupid arbitrary blocks like fake trees or invisible kecleons or a swarm of psyducks or simply needing to be able to surf to keep you from going too far off the path too fast and completely break sequence or doing gyms too much out of order, but they've never been as demanding on sequence as S&M was.
-
Grinding in a spot for an hour? It sounds like gold and silver, not sun and moon. Who the balls had to grind in Sun and Moon?
Not to mention the game has been linear since fucking… what, gen 2? Everyone loses their shit because for a second in RBY you could "make your own path", but everyone's so into OPEN-WORLD that any slight linearity and everything is bad. I've been replaying older games and they're just as goddamn linear... I honestly think it's just a matter of people seeing 3D sprites and that making the linearity more intolerable. Not to mention we live in the post-BotW world of "fuck story, OPEN WORLD IT ALL!!"
In short, the things people rant about in Sun and Moon are as prevalent as in other games, minus the grinding, since we haven't really had to deal with the disgusting grindfest of old gens in the recent ones. "Oh, but exp share is broken, i want to level up my mons the real way!!", is what I anticipate people might say, but if you do that then that's your own damn choice, don't crucify the game for not catering to how precisely you decide to play.
Regarding the Ultras, I do dislike the lack of information and marketing, and I'm 99% sure it's the result of all the "WHY NOT ON SWITCH NINTENDO?!?" bitching, which is where they decided to just keep the marketing small for this one instead. It is entirely possible that they are new variants or UBs, but I honestly wouldn't bet on it. So yea, I guess in a sense I'm also not really hyped that much about it and don't see it as that big of an improvement on SM, but then again I was always down on the third versions much the same.
It's hypocritical imo to call out this set of games while praising Crystal and Emerald and Platinum when they pulled the same shit of reusing a world and a story and just adding a dripfeed of content while asking for full price. I will agree though that B2W2 definitely stood out as worthy mid-quels, which is why those where the only ones I actually got aside from yellow, which was the same stupidity but got that one as a gift.

They never held back the entire plot, only to rush everything out in a single flashback near the end.
That was new for X and Y. Which Final Fantasy games did that?

I'm copypasting this from Serebii, because I find it a very well written statement regarding the games, and a jab to all those who are complaining for the 'lack of incentives to buy it' (which after the release of this new key art should be entirely mocked). Feel free to disagree if you want.
Wait, what? Incentives are relative to values and values are relative to people…
So people who are complaining about a lack of incentives to buy the game obviously don't value what has been shown of the game so far.
And that's deserving of mockery because...why? Because you do value it?
Seriously? What you and your friend on Serebii (who apparently knows specific people who are apparently hypocritical in their evaluation of Ultra Bondage and yet instead of speaking specifically to those actual individuals makes a passive-aggressive post to an entire group of people as if they're an unthinking collective ffs) seem to essentially be saying is this:
Person A: I've looked at all the stuff for the new Pokemon game and I'm not really interested in any of it so I don't think I'll buy it.
You: No you're wrong. I've looked at all the new stuff for the Pokemon game and I'm really interested in it and so I think I'll buy it. So obviously you're wrong and you actually do want to buy it too.Now you see that switch at the end there? Where you go from talking about all the shit you like to concluding that Person A actually does want to buy the game? See how that makes absolutely no sense?
The reason it makes no sense is really obvious: the people complaining about a lack of incentives are complaining about the lack of things in the game that appeal to their personal preferences. They're not complaining that there's a lack of quantity in an absolute sense, as if Ultra Bondage would go from a "miss" to a "must buy" if they tacked on a completely new FPS mode just because that would mean there was more content in the most generic sense of the term. And if there are actually people who, in your eyes based on their own words, are being hypocritical in their evaluation of the new game…then perhaps try to talking to them specifically? Y'know, like they're a person with their own reasons and preferences and justifications. As opposed to some faceless member of the blob of undifferentiated "opposition".
-
Nope, still not enough.
And key art? Like 2 months away from release? That's just tacky.
-
Maybe they aren't releasing new info because this is all just a cover for the REAL games: Ultra Diamond and Ultra Pearl.

Gotta like the ignorance that breaths around this section.
People keep insisting these games are the same plot with major postgame stuff, but how can they tell?
Based only on what we've seen in the trailers I'm convinced these games will feature a story that develops into an entirely new direction. Sure some events will be identical, but the overall direction is going to differ greatly. Afterall, we already have some shots that point out to completely different developments: You don't receive your starter like in SM; Kahili has an expanded role; we also got to see that misteryous trainer in flashy outfit who goes by the name of Ryuki; There was also a shot of an alolan vulpix in a lab, or Mimikyu going bonkers and showing you a glimpse of his real form. In the shot with Ryuki, the room around had devices that were very reminiscent of Lt. Surge's gym.
This isn't Episode Delta, not even close. What we're seeing in the new key art is no doubt stuff from the MAIN plot, because Necrozma's two forms are also featured there, and we already know that whatever is featured in the box arts is and has ALWAYS been stuff pertaining to the main storyline. So no, definitely not the same story, it's impossible no matter how you look at it. GF had already stated these games are set in an alternate Alola. It's not even the same thing as in Platinum, Emerald or Crystal, or Yellow. Those had some variations, but the bulk of their plots remained unchanged. But not USUM, definitely, not. The new set of antagonists is already a major changer, and along with the stuff I mentioned early, everything is pointing out towards a drastically different plot with some similarities to S/M.
Time will prove me right.

You could be right. There's nothing directly proving that USUM will be nearly identical to SM, and the new villains are a good sign.
That doesn't take away from the fact that a lot of us are just sick of Alola by now, and really want to play in another region.
-
Woooo, veekun updated the sun and moon data. Regular z moves don't work tho.
-
Gotta like the ignorance that breaths around this section.
People keep insisting these games are the same plot with major postgame stuff, but how can they tell?
Because since June they haven't shown or advertised ANYTHING different except the minor bit of alt forms and new moves. No visual of the map being different, no showing gym leaders with new designs, no advertising of anything new.
And the two actual story screenshot we DO have? The starters being picked out from the exact same location, and back at the flowerfields telling Nebby to get in the bag. Which is 100% the old story.
Yes, its certainly possible there's going to be a bunch of new stuff. That it's an alternate timeline and everyone is going to be super angsty instead of happy. I hope there is and its a completely different game and all the characters act different.
But 4 months of advertising in, and a month before release, and they haven't advertised or shown a thing. Add in how they titled these? Not with a new color making it the third official game, or a 2 like BW making it a sequel… but just "Ultra". The same, with a little more on it.
There is more evidence of there not being much new than there is evidence of there being a lot of new stuff.
-
That's not evidence of anything, you're grasping at straws. And it's actually all the opposite. Keeping things vague actually helps build the suspense and promo art like the last one leads to higher expectations.
And besides, the last thing I want is to get spoiled on the key-parts of the new story. I would rather not, thanks.
-
This is POKEMON. They advertise the hell out of their new features EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Yes, surprises are good. I wish they'd hold back more than a handful of new pokes every gen, since they usually spoil like 90% of the new stuff.
Their method for a decade and a dozens games has been ADVERTISE EVERY MINOR NEW THING. Monsters, moves, alt forms, battle frontiers, allies, gym leaders, things you can ride on, pikachu cosplays, contests, menu management, maps, pokedex designs, mega forms, aloan forms, anything and everything that they can think of to hype a game and make it fresh and get people to want it. They do it with ads in Corocoro for half a year in advance and videos showcasing things constantly and the anime starts to incoprorate things and tease in the movies. (Like they have with Dusk form wolf.)
And they haven't done that. If this was a different franchise, okay, they're saving surprises. But Pokemon? That just isn't how they work.
SO far we have… an alt form for rock wolf. (And even that is timed for only the first two months of release!) One new ultra beast per game. Alts for the box legendaries. And an area full of pikachus. And screenshots that indicate the story itself if not the same, is going to be close to what it is,
Usually after a month or two of ads we can go "okay, that's enough new stuff, I'm sold. Instant buy, don't have to think about it. I'm going to avoid the rest of the ads to be surprised."
But they're a month out and we're all still wanting something to grasp onto. If they had new stuff to entice people back, they would show it. That so many of us are saying "it doesn't look like there's anything new" means... they've failed to sell the idea that there is anything new.

https://veekun.com/dex/moves/search?pp=%3E1&damage_class=physical&flag_contact=no
I love this, my question answered!! Non contact physical moves (that aren't Z-Moves)
Now only important thing left is, non-signature Z-moves support!
This is the best pokemon datasource now.

Oh no Nekketsu is betting on time proving them right due to blind loyalty prior to something being released and meeting expectations almost exactly as everyone said it would. That's never happened before.
Hey man, it's cool if you're hyped about the product, but it's pretty clear that what they're advertising isn't going to revolutionize the game for the supermajority of us, so don't just say it's an "ignorance of breaths" just because we don't get excited about key art and a motley of features that aren't worth another $40-$80 bucks for most of us.
-
I have to wonder just how much of the Pokemon empire is currently being upheld by hardcore fans. Today I bought a second copy of Sun for event resetting, since there's no other way to get my own copies of every Ash Hat Pikachu.
Is buying both versions and/or a spare the norm among fans? I know tons of people who do it. -
First time I've heard of someone who bought the same copy twice just for an event. Quite the unusual thing to hear about.
@Purple:

Sigh Again I don't care if the stuff shown so far is enough to convince others, this is not what I meant. The points I exposed focused on aspects of the story that people seem to be using as a basis for the overarching plot.
It's not about convincing anyone, and I couldn't care less about that.

Pokemon is now officially Beyblade.

New trailer showing some new features like Mantine surfing.

So…. still think the story is going to be the same? smirks

I hate myself because I KNOW I'm going to buy this game just so I can put a mustache on Wimpod.

That mecha vikavolt. And why is Acerola so panicked, I wonder. And YASS!, the artist's trial is finally here.

-
The japanese trailer shows some different things:
You can see there will be some obstacles in the Mantine Surf, like Tentacool and Sharpedo (there are some in the US trailer as well, but very hard to spot).

Don't forget about the new and changed Trials too
For sure it's not the same games. It's 100% clear we getting a B2/W2 game

Given that the Marrowak, Mantis and vikavolt trials are the same, and that Lilly and Hao are giving exact dialogue from the previous version, and that all the areas are the same? It's the same game. The artist trial has been added and that's nice, but that was the last one in the game anyway.
It still looks almost entirely like anything new is end game stuff and that the first 40 hours are basically the same. Them adding a little bit of stuff doesn't make it a whole new game.
New way to surf looks cool at least.
